Soom Super Gem Discussion (Basic, Limited & Special Order) - Part 13

Is it not the same sculpt but with a different faceup? Or do you mean different as in the possible head shrinking?

 

@Littlebirdzoom Well they might have changed the eyes or lips or ears slightly? Honestly I can't tell with face sculpts - I rely on face ups a lot which might not be good in this hobby haha. Plus when they change the release name sometimes they change parts of the sculpt? Or I could be crazy haha

 

Funny, I like her much more than the last release, because the last release styled her like a vacant eyed, feminine Heliot, which I didn't like at all. This release makes her look much more to my taste (although I do not like that face up, at all). I spent all my Soom points to order her with her outfit and eyes. Hopefully I can find a deep purple wig to go with it.

 

@Layn I got her without a face-up and I didn't order her clothes. Basically I got her blank but her promo photos sold me on how stern she could look. I needed a serious, mature looking female elf and she fit the bill (considering that the other molds I was interested in were all older discontinued sculpts that never came up on the marketplace). So I am just trying to see how this girl looks without the sad eyebrows.

 

just personal observation. When they first rereleased older heads on the newer body the proportions looked a little off to me. It was also something I noticed in the pictures of a few MP threads selling older heads on newer bodies. It could just be camera angles, staging, and how the dolls were wigged/dressed, but I noticed it a few times and in pictures taken by different people at different times. The more recent releases haven't looked as off to me. Could be something as simple as they changed their photographer or they've gotten more mindful of angles and such in company photos (more speculation on my part)

 

I think the main difference is that the newer SGs necks are a bit shorter and thicker, plus the shoulders wider on the newer body, making the heads appear smaller. My Migma is from the Alice release (newer body), and her insides are just as wonky as from older releases I've seen - and the same goes for my Dia.

 

The new heads are much smaller, for men and women sculpts. I have had original and new release versions of Breccia and Phonolus and in both cases the heads were smaller (specifically the backs of the heads though the faces were smaller too).

 

They added little videos to show the blank heads - that was nice! I have the feeling she is the same as the one I have so she's going to be a pass for me. I do like her outfit but it's a little too lolita for my gals.

 

To each their own! It's perfect for my girls, plus with Soom's aesthetic drifting farther and farther away from my preferences... if they release an Ignim, a Breccia, and a Gneiss in the next year, along with my desperately wanted second bronze Vesuvia so I can have one with a scorpion body and one with a human body, I'll buy all of them, but the odds of that happening are so slim... it might never happen, let alone soon. So I'm spending all my Soom points now, on a doll that, while she wasn't on my wishlist, I at least like!

I personally hate wearing frilly, intricate clothing because the frills itch, no matter what, and end up wearing more structured, modern clothing. My dolls are my excuse to dress people/things in the clothes I'd wear myself if they weren't uncomfortable.

 

@Layn Oh she is gorgeous - I just don't need 2. XD My Witch aka Varda is perfectly happy being the Queen of my Elf Kingdom and she doesn't want a sister haha! Ooooh those girls were very pretty. Maybe someday it will happen?

I agree! Frilly, lacey things can be itchy! I love the constellation fabric - it's the headband that gets me. I know, I know, I don't have to put it on my dolls but I'd rather the whole set be bought by someone who will enjoy all of it as opposed to me being a star printed outfit hoarder.

 

Has there any discussion on Soom's 20th anniversary releases? There are 3 rereleases lined up for it and the first one in February will be a Super Gem! SOOM 20th Anniversary Event - The Gem

My take on the 2nd thumbnail would be mini gem Uyoo though. Wished I could find an exact match of the thumbnail but Uyoo's page seem to be gone already. Not sure if she is part of the Legend Collection also.

I dont think its Uyoo - ears alone don't count as fantasy dolls for Soom, I think? Therefore 'first fantasy MD' would be Amber, as she was released in January (the SOOM emporium) Although none of her pictures match.

Well. Beryl and Amber are not my cup of tea, and I don't need another Heliot. So I am not likely to be tempted by any of this!

On Soom's "20 Year History" page, SOOM, A record of the past 20 years - The Gem under 2008, it says this:

• Release the Gem's first fantasy doll : Beryl

Someone ages ago was asking if I had any photos of my collection, which is largely Soom SGs. I have, for the first time, gotten them all out. Maybe now that I see them out I will want to take proper photos!

10 SG and 2 Idealians. I am missing one of my SG girls though, I need to get her put back together.

 

What are everyone's thoughts on the new Breccia release? I love the sculpt so I'm taking the opportunity to get her, but honestly I'm rather disappointed in her fullset.

 

I have always found Breccia pretty, but I found this new fullset outfit to be fairly horrifying, if I’m honest. I was considering purchasing her until I saw it, and now it’s a strong “no”.

Also, the 20th Anniversary announcement said they were looking at releasing the best sold SG this month (sleuthed earlier in the thread to be Heliot) - with only a few days left to go, do you think we’ll see him before next month?

 

The new Breccia is not great. They did her dirty tbh. But, their schedule is posted and I'm a little confused.

I think this counts as the best selling SG? unless they're going to spring something up on us. I'm a little angry that they put Heliot in the background because I've been wanting a god master for a long long time. He was one of the first BJD I ever saw, and holds a special place in my heart. I'm still hoping to be surprised, but if this counts as the start to their 20th anniversary stuff it's... extremely disappointing (especially with how low effort and strange the outfits seem to be lately)

I don't mean to be negative, but I love Soom so much and was so hyped and it's dying pretty fast :/

 

I was trying to be diplomatic, but horrifying is a good way to describe how I feel about it too, haha. And I was really looking forward to it too so I stalked the page for days while they delayed the release, only to be met with that outfit that reminds me of some weird baby clothes? Eh. I'm glad I was hoping to get just the doll, but the faceup isn't to my taste either.

 

I’m 99.9% sure that the Breccia release is not the Heliot/ best selling soom event bjd…as in the 2022 event announcement they also stated that the month release they noted under the blurry pictures were only rough estimates and release time could change for those special event dolls.

So if you were hoping to get hands on a heliot release I wouldn’t worry yet.

As for the Breccia release I think she’s pretty and I like that Soom is releasing the old fantasy super gems with a romantic face option as well.

The dress / outfit is a lil’ exaggerated, super artsy, pop idol couture vibe and will only please a small percentage but any collector can just get another outfit for her elsewhere that they like better for their vision of their BJD; that is the joy of the customizable hobby but I do get the convenience of having an outfit that pleases a larger majority of people so the collector can get both the outfit along with the doll in one go to save on shipping from finding something somewhere else and so they won’t have a doll arriving naked.

 

I was thinking the same thing. This outfit could be really cool for a fashion photoshoot. Find the right wig and shoes and maybe a few other accessories and bam, I could see some really cute shots coming out of this.

 

Ahhhh all I want is to see some felted hamsters in that ball! That would be adorable

Just catching up here but ... will the re-release of Beryl be the same or different? Same release/outfit or ? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I am so behind on all the doll companies and the what happenings.

 

It's possible Beryl will be the blue outfit, or Heliot will have the blue outfit.

Just what I need. Another Heliot.

 

Man oh man...just missed buying a tawny Breccia by a week. I checked with Soom and there's nothing they can do, so I'm here to tell my tale of woe Like 10 years ago I saw the Feast of Spring I think it was, and I loved the design so much any other BJD really didn't compare, but it was after that order period. I always wished they had a smaller bust option, and that she'd be beautiful in tawny, and I love the extra leg joint they added - all of which was available... a week ago! Ugh.

 

@busk Aw I'm so sorry! I am surprised SOOM wouldn't still allow you to order her, I know they've allowed it in the past if it's within a few days of the ordering period. Is it possible they misunderstood your question?

 

When I missed out on Elf Saiph they wouldn't let me order her either, and it had been less than 24h. They said as soon as they finish the order period they order materials and it's not possible to add any new orders at that point.

That great! She is a beautiful sculpt, did you get the regular elf or romantic elf version? I love mine but regret not getting her in Baby Pink.

 

I got the romantic elf version, but I'm thinking of opening her eyes. I'm not much for romantic heads, but it was what I was able to find. Baby pink is a lovely color! Mine's in cream, I believe? (Ok I checked, she's in Normal)

 

I struggled a lot to give Jet the appropriate wig: tried three different ones and concluded that long hair would not work. After unsuccessful attempts, I ordered two short black wigs similar to the promo photo. While waiting, I am reaching out to the community for suggestions. Thank you.

With those eyebrows, black or dark grey would be the best color choices. There is no brown or red tint in there that I can see : /

Tomorrow night I'll be able to see Soom release my 8 year long hobby grail and I am so nervous. I haven't really liked any of their latest SG releases. I really hope they give him some cool options and do him justice if he's labeled best... with no quantity limited special things. I'd be fine with just unicorn head options and some hooves in any color but NS tbh. I hope they release tawny or blue or grey.

 

I'd love to see them do a tan-type resin version with hooves, myself. The White Night twins are fun, but they only have human legs.

 

I wasn't a fan of the Amber ears personally, but the color for Heliot was AMAZING. Agreed with the hooves it would look wonderful. They've been going hard on the peony white though, so I'm just like soom please don't do this to me XD

 

I'm fond of the ears, myself. They suit the sculpt's kind-of mopey face.

I'd rather not have another white resin one. I've had pretty bad luck with Soom's white resins yellowing in less-than-pleasing ways. (Or going greenish in my Emeral King Chalco's case. <_<) My original Heliot pair and Dream Ripper are looking pretty... buttery... these days, in spite of being kept in a cabinet away from the light.

IT Does LOOK like they pushed heliot back as Heliot’s name was removed from Soom’s March calendar and another re-release of Raon was added. Darn. Well on the plus side my wallets safe this month.
