Soom Super Gem Discussion (Basic, Limited & Special Order) - Part 12

Oct 22, 2017

    1. Hello, I'm new to DoA as well as the world of ball jointed dolls!
I just received my first large doll. She was purchased in 2011 and is Amber, daughter of Caliph, The Gem.
Her prior owner bought her in 2011 and had not removed her from her box.
She arrived yesterday and I'm so very excited to bring her out of her long sleep.

    2. It is a good day off when both my dolls and the outfit I was getting worried about arrived at the same time! I'm super happy to have Annalise and Cecil back home. Please pardon the mess of my desk behind them xD;

    3. oh, wow! your Breccia and Albin are wonderful. I'm just getting around to painting my FCE (Breccia Soulstealer) Emanuelle's wings and horns, Sweet Witch shoes, etc.
poor Sebastian (Albin) is in a zipped bag where he's been since the hurricane last year.
perhaps they'll get some camera time after her fantasy parts are painted.

    4. My first new bjd came from Luts and was strung extremely tight, a massive chunk from the neck has come away when in transit. I had opened the box thw first evening and had taken pics for a box opening which helped me get it sorted. Early lesson helped for a couple of other later purchases. Only one was Soom for my red Tridy, a casting on one of the wings wasn't right which was sorted with no fuss. I have a lot of Soom and everything else had no problems, except for a couple of quite bad seams (think it was 2014 when this was happening) which I sanded out myself.

    5. @petiteballerine Thank you. They were gone for 4 months, I was starting to get a little antsy! Thankfully I am just smitten with the pair of them. I hope to see yours around and about sometime soon, too!

Cecil is in need of a proper wig (this one is borrowed and swallowing his head, lol) with a better cut. Wish me luck as I'm going to attempt to make it myself since finding short styles for the guys is rather difficult! And Annalise needs curlier hair, but this will do for the time being. <3

    6. Hello everyone - I had a quick question. I have a Soom head on its way home and I was curious what, if any, companies their Normal skin matches for bodies? I'm particularly interested if Volks or Luts would work.

    7. they're gorgeous! :D that beige dress is so awesome against her skin.

    8. So I just paid off my Soom R. Chalco in pale violet (and Minel---the waiting game begins)! So excited. I haven't had a Soom doll in a long, long time. Just wonderin' though, does Soom really have any issues with major marbling? I feel like the answer is no because I've handled quite a few without it, but I am curious.

Also congrats to all the Chalco and Breccias that have been ordered! I almost went for the pink Breccia but I've used all of my budget for dolls this year.

    9. The person who is doing Raye's blushing and wig thinks he'll be ready to come home this week!

    10. I braved bugs and unleashed dogs to get pictures of my Sweet Witch hybrid, Hawley, in GGP
      [IMG]

I don't see may Sweet Witches around, was she not a really popular sculpt?

      • x 3
    11. I really didn't like her fantasy face at all, her human face was better but looks similar to other sculpts, and any liking I have for her is cancelled out by my appalling experience with a split host that dragged on for two? years. Too many terrible memories for me to ever want one.

    12. I have a Sweet Witch and I love her to pieces! I'm so woefully behind on painting and dressing my collection that I don't take photos of her very much, though.

    13. I tend to favor the more broody/grumpy faces, so Sweet Witch was a bit too cute for me personally. Though I will say she definitely felt like a more complete and thought out release over many of the fairytale releases, but that's just a matter of my own personal preference when comparing them to older releases that had me wishing I could bring them home.

I do like what a few people have done with theirs, including your Hawley, @Girrl . You managed to negate the too cute factor for me, it's fun to see your photos of her (especially in the photo stories, lol).

      Raye says hi!

    15. So I’ve recently become the proud owner of a Cuprit. She’s beautiful!
No photos of her yet because I’m waiting on her eyes and wig.
I’ll be honest— when I opened the box with her in it, I was not prepared for how big she was. She’s my first 1/3, so I was like “that’s a lot of doll.” :XD:

      • x 1
    16. And the SuperGems are on the large size of the 1/3 scale too. I love Cuprit! Congratz on getting her.

    17. Congratulations on your Cuprit! She is a lovely sculpt.

    18. Soom do some excellent sculpts. The head to body size has always been one thing I didn't like, but the fantasy style stuff was great in their original line. Love your Annalise and Cecil, what gorgeous outfits!

    19. Hello together :3
Anyone can tell me more about their joints and pose ability?
Saw only the company pictures and some in the web but can't tell how good they pose :3

    20. I find the legs a bit awkward to pose, but the arms are much better.

    21. @Hasentraene I have three male SuperGem bodies, all different versions, and the last one is the best on my opinion. Maybe SG bodies not the best posers, but Soom changed their elbows, so they are able to keep mid-poses, and I like new knees best.

    22. It's been a long while since I've shared my dolls, but they received their ears/horns recently! Brink is a Miq'ote (Keeper of the Moon) while Zephii is an Au Ra (Raen) -- (*Zephii is off-topic for this thread*)!

    23. I am also really curious on what body matches soom's normal or pale skin heads. Does anyone have some suggestions? Thx.

    24. Thank you so much! I'll definitely look into those!:whee:

    25. Yes @neriszhou I have two Soom heads on Feeple65 bodies and they are great!

    26. Thank you for the fast response ^-^
      Do they have double joints?

    27. The knees are double jointed, but the way the legs are strung is not very well thought out, and doesn't allow them to actually use the flexibility their joints should allow. And they love flopping backwards when sitting up.

    28. I wish they could slouch a bit with the upper chest joint. I have the original body and the 2d one, with the latest iteration on layaway (violet Chalco)
My guys and girls sit up straight enough, but there's a tipping point if you adjust a hair or touch them, they can fall backwards.
All in all, I love all my Sooms. From Uyoo to Idealian 51 to all the Supergems. You can't go wrong. :kitty1

    29. FYI, Soom has started shipping violet Chalco fullsets - my boy just arrived. No shipping notice from Soom though, of course.

    30. OMG, @Kimchi ! That's wonderful. I have one more layaway payment in two weeks, so my guy might ship before Christmas. Soom usually starts making them early.
      that is good news.
I NEED to see photos, please. cake? :cake:

    31. New Topaz!! :sumomo:

    32. I hate that faceup.
Still, I'm curious to see what her fantasy parts will look like. Looks like she at least has horns... I would love to see Topaz's original fantasy parts in a transparent black resin.

    33. @Arekushia :aeyepop::love Thanks for posting that, its very easy to miss even thought its way up in the page lol

Not usually a fan of their female dolls but this Topaz looks really beautiful and I love her faceup :daisy I wish to see her with dark hair

It looks like her outfit is going to be killer too. The thing I hate about end of year is that all the great deals pop out during this time of year, so choosing what you want (the savings/ limited doll) is very very very hard and annoying :vein

@Kimchi, hope you post him! I was really curious about his resin tone and Im kicking myself for not getting him when he was available lol

haha! I was just thinking the same thing @GreenTeaSlug . I decided I couldn't pass up violet Chalco, but knew it made shopping for Christmas impossible.
every time I see something I like, I think of him coming home in a few weeks. it's hard to wait one more week to make the final payment. :sweat

    35. That was... not really what I was expecting, in terms of fantasy parts. The outfit is nice, but not $169 nice.

    36. At last the re edition of topaz, but why only Ws or tawny? i hate the ws and i dont like the +70€ for the tawny :/ . The outfit very pretty but not for that price. I have wait a little whit a little luck they put the normal skin option.

    37. Gotta agree, there. The outfit is nice... But not *that* nice. Sheesh. o_0

    38. pretty girl and lovely outfit, but I wish Soom would use their lights better. more like catalogue pics rather than moody story photos.
even the layout with only the outfit pieces is dark. at some point, Soom, please stop the sidelighting and turn on the overheads. :3nodding:

    39. First off - excited to hear that Chalcos are shipping! I paid mine off with a two week layaway so hopefully that doesn't hold mine back. Only thing is that he's not a fullset so we'll see. I have another doll in that order (Fully painted Minel) and hopefully that doesn't hold him back too much...

Topaz is a mold I like but I'll never own. I think the face-up is....fine. I like the style but just doesn't really click for me on her. I reaaaaally like the outfit. Bit high, but maybe I'll suck it up. Also, THOSE FEET ARE CRAZY.

    40. Oh thank goodness, I think I'm mostly safe from this one. The full set isn't calling out to me this time, and there's no justifying the price of the outfit when compared to the complexity of the previous couple.

Urgh those fantasy parts though... (Lol I'm very tempted to finally try and learn the etiquette regarding splits for those.)

    41. It is SUPER easy honestly. Really all it is a little math and a lot of communication with those also within the split. I say if you really want them that's the best thing to do. I've done that for previous fantasy doll releases. ^^

    42. Thanks for the reassuring info! (I'm waiting on the UK distributor for Chronicle Collectibles to get off their arse and actually list the GBP prices for the Jareth/Bowie 1/4 scale statue before making any bjd decisions this month... Doubly irritating since by pure dint of geography I've now missed out on the $200USD early bird discount available to US-based customers... I may Pm you asking where's best to actually post the split question if that's OK?)

    43. I'd almost be willing to get it if it had another piece like a matching skirt, but I only have one doll that would wear what amounts to extremely glorified underwear with a sheer cape thing, and black is most certainly not her color.

If I could even just buy pieces of the fullset and not the whole thing, I'd be willing to buy it, I love the top and sleeves, but the bottom is just... nah, and the cape isn't really anything special.

    44. Topaz seems interesting not sure. I like her she is so pretty but I want kind of a light cutesy girl in tan and I’m not sure if she could pull it off. I also have a feeple and I think she might look to mature. Which is funny since i have a venitu which is mature lol. But anyone know the type of clothes she would fit into? Like normal as size or is she a bit bigger?

    45. @sweetpumpkinpiex Im not sure what you mean about normal size but you can check measurements here and compare it with clothing you want to buy. She is supergem female 2012 version fyi :)

    46. Well I mean sd10 or feeple60 type.

    47. Huh. My Chalco shipped! No notice, but at least it was marked in my account.

I guess I'll see him and Minel real soon~

    48. So Faralei's wig finally showed up in the mail today! It was getting dark out so I only got one photo of her. (I hope the photo isn't too large!) :eusa_pray

    49. Question for my fellow Super Gem owners. I know their heads tend to take size 14 eyes but there are some size 16 and 18 eyes I really want but I have no idea how they would look inside my dolls. Do any of you have any dolls that wear that size eyes or can point me to a photo reference thread? Thanks!

    50. Just wanted to show you my Alexandra. Love her so much! :love

    51. @jessholy - 14mm are the biggest I have in my SGs. Chalco has big eyes. Not sure 16 would work. Newer dolls I have are wearing 12mm.

White Rabbit Northerly Breeze (L) 12mm with Chalco Soulmate 14mm.

      .

    52. Honestly? I doubt you could fit 18mm eyes into most of their eyewells… 16mm would have to be low- or even no-dome to work, I suspect, and would give a very "doe-eyed"/no-white-showing look. Mine are all wearing 14mm eyes. (Well, all except for Rajin anyway. He has 15mm black onyx beads-)

    53. @jessholy I have 16mm Oscar Doll eyes in my Chalco:
but I had an Amber for a while and even 14mm was occasionally too big for her; none of the 16mm eyes I tested fit that sculpt at least.

    54. @petite ballerina... is your white rabbit white resin colour? If yes what do you think of white resin colour? Im thinking of getting Tristan head but havent made up my mind if i want him in white or normal resin colour...

    55. @Tangmalangaloo - WR is normal. but I have 2 in cream white (vampire Albin & Breccia.) it's a lovely color. soft. seems to keep its tone well. no yellowing since I got them several years ago.

on my phone now but will post pics tonight or tomorrow.

To be honest, Soom tawny, cream white, grey, normal are all beautiful & age well. I'm waiting for violet Chalco to ship!

      .

    56. I am tempted by Tristan. The cream white or norm as l skin head would fit best in the budget, but the tawny is so tempting!
