It's been a long time since I photographed these wings. So now that I did I thought I'd share. Shall I Take To The Skies? ------------- Added notes -------------- Previous discussion threads: Part XI Part XII Part XIII Part XIV Part XV DoA Wiki: Volks DoA database: Sweet Dollfie Dreams
As someone who is a huge fan of Utena, the dolls sculpts really disappointed me. They look nothing like the characters. That being said I decided to go ahead and enter the lottery for Anthy. A dark tan dollfie is cool all on it's own, so if I get her I can make an original character. @MilkyTea , she's so cuute!
Thank you and yes I did. I had meant to do more to show them off but ran out of energy so I failed to capture what IMHO really sets them apart which is their level of articulation. They go from fully open like this to fully folded.
I'd absolutely recommend a bodysuit for Y'shtola. I stained my Kos-Mos pretty good with her original outfit as she was my first DD and I was overly excited+unknowledgeable with regard to how bad the outfit would stain the vinyl. I ended up replacing the arms/legs, so thankfully she's still near perfect. I'd assume this is the reason the Volks website always has black/darker colors always available as opposed to the whites/brights. I do have Y'shtola on the way myself and will definitely put her in a bodysuit. Also surprised to see no mention of Utena's lottery open at VolksUSA right now. I quite like it, especially the outfit, and entered for it! Totally a bonus she's a DD-f3 for those who don't have one yet.
I'm super interested in getting a SD or DD, or even a Mochi Ashi. But I see so many people in Facebook groups talking about how the quality from Volks has gone down lately, with wobbly pieces or limbs falling off. Is this true, or just a small percentage of complaints all in one place? If it is true, is there a certain time period or body style I should get that will be better? I love the look of these dolls and the customization options, but nervous about spending money on something that breaks.
My Dollfie was the Lina Inverse release in 2021, so not that long ago, and she was absolutely perfect. No problems with bits falling off or being wobbly, and I wrestled her into a full bodysuit before dressing her.
I've purchased two Dream Choice dolls in the past year and neither of them had any issues at all. I haven't seen many complaints either here or on DollDreaming, either. However, I will mention that there was an issue with several of the Nier Automata 2B dolls which came out a few years ago - a fair number of them had cracked neck holes on the heads, which Volks moved to replace after some fuss. That's the only issue that springs to mind, but I remember it because it WAS an issue, and also because it was so unusual. The other thing is that the two issues you mention - wobbly pieces and limbs falling off - are both issues that can be addressed by tightening the tiny screws on the DD internal skeleton. Admittedly this is something you don't want to be forced to do straight out of the box, but they're issues that are easily fixable by the owner, not issues that make the doll unusable. I'm pretty sure there's information on the Volks website that will show you how to adjust the skeleton, if it comes to that.
This makes me feel so much better! I had a feeling it was just a select few on FB, but knew I’d have better luck getting actual advice here. I’ve been eyeing multiple Volks girls and now just have to decide what to get lol! Thank you! Lol!! I’m glad you wrestled her and were victorious! That’s a super recent release so I’m happy to hear that people have had great experiences. Thank you!!
Does Volks do reruns of collaborations? I love the entire sailor moon and scouts set, but these resell prices/availability are just crazy…
It's extremely unlikely they will ever be rereleased. There HAVE been some Dollfie Dreams who've had some rereleases (especially Hatsune Miku -- she's had a LOOOOOT), but it's the exception, not the norm.
Yes that’s what I read- I’d imagine the precedent then would be to only rerelease the main/most popular (Moon) Or maybe a 2nd version like with Rin from Fate with the outer senshi Or I’ll just have to wait and save
Yeah - I would say this is unlikely to happen for something like sailor moon. Your best bet for them is to watch Mandarake as the resale price there isn’t usually too bad. That being said, there are a few limited examples of them doing re-releases. Miku and Snow Miku both got them as did Emilia. There are also many Saber variants but I’d view all of these as exceptions - most of the time they don’t re-release.
Yes, both Utena and Anthy are available directly from the International site without having to go through a lottery! Collab DD on the International site are usually click war items, though Utena and Anthy seem to be surprisingly easy to get? I'm surprised that they are still available a week after they were put on sale on the site! I personally pre-ordered Utena from the International site last week. Though Utena seems to be awaiting restock again right now.
@namika Ok, thanks for the info! I really like Utena's face, but not sure if I wanna go for her or not.
not very common...it all depends on the copyright I believe. The only one that so far seems more lenient on 2nd and more releases are probably the fate series. Also occasionally if the charater has a different outfit set, if popular enough they may get another release.
Well instead of waiting for a sailor moon rerun I decided to get myself an Anthy instead, and am toying with the idea of making a sailor Pluto but I absolutely adore her tan skin tone regardless
I adore Utena as a series and I love how they designed Utena and Anthy, so I'm super excited to have (somehow) survived the clickwar and purchased them! I have to figure out where I'm going to put them when they arrive! ♥
I'd like a Sakura Miku rerelease. Regarding Sailor Moon dolls. Have they said if they will do the outer senshi or not? I assume they aren't but I can hope right?
They never announced anything or hinted at it, so probably not... unless we start seeing teasers or other content in Volks News.
I ordered her direct from Volks international which is my first time doing so- roughly how long is it until a doll is shipped after being ordered?
They’ve always taken at least a week or two but they’ve announced that people who ordered for this sale should expect delays so anywhere from 3-6 weeks maybe?
Tamalita my only MDD size Dollfie Dream. She has the Mochi Ashi body. I need to get her some more outfits
Now that I finally jumped on the DD train I should probably join this thread as well . I am super exited to learn more about DDs. When I first got into resin BJDs I didn't like anime dolls but now I think they are the cutest. And I plan to get a MDD eventually as well.
I entered the lottery for Utena! So nervous. I wish I could have entered for both but couldn’t spring it right now. It’s so funny, my three favorite anime from when I was little was Sailor Moon, Utena, and Slayers and now Volks has made dolls of all of them! Unfortunately I know it will be near impossible to get the sailors, but hopefully I can at least have Utena to go with Lina and Mashiro!
@Erleuchtung ah I'm sorry that sucks. Hopefully you're able to get her somewhere else! I won Anthy, which I wasn't expecting at all. My plan is to hopefully make my DD Sanjie into Anthy, since I think her face sculpt suits the character more, and style Anthy herself a different way.
I won Anthy but lost Utena. I dread Utena's secondhand price but I don't want them to be separated lol.
Congrats, she has so much potential. And thank you! Hoping for a 2nd draw now in case quite a few people don‘t pay. Otherwise…there is still a very low chance that she will be restocked on Volks Int. site. ;-; At least she is not marked as sold out yet…
Congrats on your Utena and Anthy! Vinyl dolls have definitely become super big in recent years! It's funny because I'm in the same boat too -- I've been into resin BJDs since 2006, and never gave a second glance at vinyl. But to be fair, they were not very cute back then ^^;; I remember seeing old Obitsu's and just thinking that they were absolutely terrible looking. Volks original DD line was also iffy (though nostalgic), especially with the strung vinyl bodies. But after that Volks really perfected them !
After what feels like a long time my Anthy was waiting for me after returning from a trip! I made an unboxing video for her to have a look at her in all her glory in motion and give my first reaction! If you watch I hope you enjoy
My very late response here, but I did want to say the tan mochi-ashi body I recently acquired via Dream Choice had incredibly loose arms that wouldn't stay up out of the box. Tightening the frame was enough to fix this, though, and none of his pieces were actually broken. I also haven't experienced this with my other DDs, and Anthy was especially perfect (as she deserves). Not sure if the issue was exclusive to tan frames, DC, or some other combination of factor - but even then, I wouldn't call it evidence of a decline in quality.
I have 3 dream choice dolls, and only one arrived slightly loose. I think this is just something to do with the newest frame and not a decline in quality; some people (surprisingly) want looser dolls, although most want them to be able to hold a pose hah. I'd take it over the DDIII cracking any day.
Hello! This is my first time in this thread - I won an Anthy in the Volks USA Lottery last month. I am excited but also nervous - I've never owned a vinyl doll this size and I am so used to resin, I'm not sure what to do. I'm also a little panicky because I feel like I need to get Utena but her second hand prices are currently very intimidating.
Congratulations! I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum! All of my dolls are vinyl except for my SD13. I don't know how to restring her, or do to much. The vinyl DDs are very easy to work with. They pose well, they are soft, and when they're new they have nice vinyl smell. I don't think you'll have any problems at all; they're much easier than resin. I will say that I do also own one Smartdoll and those can be a bit tricky because you have to take their arms off to put their clothes on. That's because D. Choo likes the clothes to be form fitting. Volks, on the other hand, tends to use hooks or snaps in the back of the clothes, so it should be easy to dress your DDs without taking any parts off, other than perhaps her hands. Second hand prices on popular characters always go through the roof. I feel your pain!
@Dollfie_Dude Thank you for the reassurances! I am excited! I own quite a lot of Volks outfits so I am eager to have her wear more than just her rose bride dress. However, they don't have the body sock? - the protection suit - in her skin tone so I am also anxious about staining. I don't have to worry about staining with resin. I am worried if I wait too long, the price will just get higher. But on the other hand, if Anthy and I don't gel, then there would be no point in owning Utena too. I'm not sure which action is the best action to take haha!
Sure they do! DD用ボディタイツ(褐色肌) Home :: Dollfie® Supplies :: Care Items :: View All Care Items :: DD Full Bodysuit / Tan It can be out of stock, but at least it's exist!
The tan bodysock has a noticeable color difference from tawny. It'd work if it wasn't visible but at that point any of them would. I will say I had Anthy in her full default for a solid month or so without a hint of staining, even from her wig, so at least that much seems to be safe(ish)? Her hand was even touching the outside of the skirt and nothing. She's still wearing the wig since I'm struggling to find a replacement in a shade I'm happy with, so fingers crossed nothing suddenly changes
@Tolgy Yeah I looked at the tan suit and it doesn't match her skin tone close enough. I even emailed Volks USA about it and they could only say "nope but uh use the tan I guess??? Maybe one day they'll make one???" @asuu Thank you for reassuring me on the staining! I have a purple wig from Monique (from their going out of business sale) that I am eager to try on her. I think it's a lighter shade of purple but reminds me of her movie hair. Is it bad that I want Volks to make their movie costumes? I loved how Utena and Anthy looked in the movie! But I also just want them to have more of their anime clothes hahaha. Would you recommend changing her eyes or leave them in? I'm used to changing out default eyes but Anthy is literally going to be my first anime doll and DD.
Seconded on the movie outfits... I also would've like Anthy's school uniform, or her end episode outfit (though I suppose that's a "spoiler"?) The rose bride outfit is amazingly well done though. I haven't switched out her eyes yet, mostly laziness– they're glued in just like in resins. I don't think her defaults are too bad, they have a nice metallic sheen to them, but I personally would like to swap them for something a little more to my tastes... eventually. The wig is a bigger priority for me, mostly since I'd like to have her hair down in some of the outfits I've gotten.
@asuu I love her series finale outfit too! She looked so pretty! I like how the rose bride outfit looks from pictures. I see I see. I am so used to Oscar Doll/Swan Doll resin eyes so I am just a little anxious - I really want to like her since Utena is one of my favorite animes! (To the point that I went from drawing like CLAMP to drawing like Utena style and I am not sure I ever shook that habit haha)
Anyone else super stoked about Kaito?! I know next to nothing about vocaloids besides the names of the ones Volks has already made but man I love him! He's really cute! I hope hes an open preorder, I don't know if I'll be able to buy so I hope that if I can't end up affording him that I can at least get his head and outfit
I'm personally disappointed. As a Kaito fan I feel like he doesn't really look like him. Face to round and eyes to big. Makes him look younger.
I’m so excited, he looks better than I ever expected. Kaito doesn’t really have a set appearance and I always preferred him to look cute, so I think they did an amazing job of making him look both cute and a little more mature than the rest. I also find his sideways glance really charming as I don’t think any DD has come like that before, as opposed to looking straight ahead. I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to see him so I’m glad it was worth the wait. I actually originally got interested in big anime dolls back in 2015 because I wanted to make a custom Kaito so the whole release is kinda special for me. https://twitter.com/volks_dd/status/1557894842596098048?s=21&t=uRcT0VWw_n_wSK-3gviEYw
I'm not familiar with vocaloid so I have no thoughts and opinions about Kaito as the character and whether Volks did a good job or not but as a doll I don't feel crazy for him because the face seems pretty generic for me.... I don't think Volks are good at making male DDs. They would do amazing if they make DDP and MDD boys though. For DD boys I think they still need more improvement... which is weird because they make amazing resin boy dolls with unique faces and beautiful male bodies. If they could make a DD version of the SD17 body I would die of happiness!
He is amazingly cute. I was worried he'd look *too* young (ended up having this problem with Meiko, I thought I could accept it but just couldn't and will be reshelling mine with another more mature head like DDH07 or Sheryl) but no, he just looks adorable and bishie (indulging in an 00s throwback word , seems appropriate for Vocaloid fandom lol). Consider the very small number of male DDs so far -- even if you include the 'intended as male' Dream Choice entry/ies it is single digits. So I think if they haven't yet hit an appealing aesthetic of vinyl boy, it's an artefact of this small sample size. Or to put it another way, years and years ago at the point when Volks had released less than ten resin boys there was a very limited aesthetic range to them -- I think there are many people who love Maximilian and Regulus today who would not be especially interested in owning the guys from those early days, for example. Now, the vanishingly small number of boys it itself an issue and a crying shame! C'mon Volks, more more more! I just mean to say it's a slightly different issue than whether they're good at it.
It's not like they are new to DD boys but you have a point. I hope they experiment more because so far the boys look softer than the girls. It's not about the quantity because another vinyl doll company only made one body and I think it is the perfect body I'm looking for, it's like a SD17 but in vinyl and the faces are different and nice. Spoiler *coughs*SmDs*coughs* Too bad Danny said he doesn't like boy dolls so they don't go on sale often, he just made them because buyers asked him to so he doesn't put that much interest in them but still, I think he makes the best vinyl boys so far. I do love the custom DD boys though. I have seen so many nice custom DD boys in IG, maybe this Kaito will look great as a custom boy. Can't wait to see how people will customize him (the ones who won't keep the character )
Hmm... nobody interested in Megumin? 2022 Lottery :: HTD Kyoto 19 After Event Limited Items :: DDS Megumin
@Tolgy I think Megumin is beautiful! I don’t know the character, but I really like her dark hair and red eyes. Her outfit is nice too. I won’t be entering for her so good luck to everyone entering the lottery! I will be looking forward to pictures!
My Anthy arrived today! Her Rose Bride outfit won the battle against my fingernails (2 broke) so she is currently in another outfit. I am honestly far too scared to actually pierce her ears so those might never get used. Any advice on if I should buy her a stand or if I can get her to stand on her own? She is very pretty but I am definitely not used to the Dollfie Dream body.
While DDs can stand on their own, they're also very light/easy to get rattle on a shelf and I wouldn't leave one to stand 100% unassisted for more than photos. They're fine sitting, though- I only have one stand at the moment so a lot of sitting happens over here. As long as the frame is tight, which Anthy should be out of the box, they'll pretty much hold whatever position you put them in.
