Contest Triathlon round 2 - Moment of enchantment

Jul 24, 2019

    1. VOTE FOR ROUND 2 HERE!

This is the second of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of three fabulous rewards as announced here.

What is a fabulous hairstyle without an outfit? For this challenge, you shall create an outfit that creates a striking impression. Use your knowledge of your doll's personality, goals and ambitions to create an outfit that turns heads.

Make an outfit that will create the exact impression your doll wants to convey when they make their grand entrance.
      • Your outfit can be any style but must cover the majority of your doll's torso at minimum. If you are concerned that your concept may not comply with this rule, please post in Ask the Moderators.
      • Your outfit can be made from any materials, synthetic or natural.
      • Your doll must still be able to move limbs while dressed.
      • Your outfit must be removable. No sticking clear tape or cling film directly to your doll!

      Materials

      • Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own household items or clothing, you may dumpster dive, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all.
      • Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials.

      • Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it.
Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Rules
      1. You may submit only one entry.
      2. The outfit must have been created specifically for this contest.
      3. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.
      4. Outfits must be modeled by on-topic dolls.
      5. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished outfit or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.
      6. You must use the same doll for all three challenges.
      7. You must use the wig you created in challenge one.
IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements.

      How to Enter
You will need to provide the following photos:

      1. a front view of your doll standing wearing the outfit
      2. a back view of your doll standing wearing the outfit
      3. a collage image showing notable details
      4. a photo of recycled materials used (before use)
      5. a photo of purchased materials used (before use)
      6. a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6)
      7. a style shot of the completed outfit showing the doll posing naturally

Note: all photos of the doll in the outfit must also include the doll wearing the wig from challenge #1. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 800 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

Do NOT submit your images as links.
Please follow the directions on the entry form to insert your images. You will be uploading your images directly to DoA. If you are not sure about this, please view this short tutorial before submitting your entry.

Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry. You may title it however you like.

:cake: ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED :cake:

Do not contact the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

      Voting, Points and Prizes

      • This is the second task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges. If you participated for fun in a previous round you cannot participate for the prize.
      • Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge.
      • Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.
      • We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years – you will be using the same code name for challenge 2 as you used in challenge 1.

Members will have four vote points to distribute to four different entries based on the following criteria:
      • Craftsmanship and attention to detail
      • Complementary styling to wig from challenge #1
      • Creative use of materials
      • Aesthetic appeal

      Important Dates

Challenge Two Opens: Sunday August 11th 12am EDT
Submission Deadline: Saturday August 17th 11:59pm EDT
      (midnight)
Challenge Two Voting Opens: Monday August 19th 12pm EDT (noon)
Challenge Two Voting Closes: Saturday August 24th 11:59pm EDT (midnight)
Challenge Two Voting Results Post: Sunday August 25th

If you have general questions about the contest, feel free to post in this thread. Questions about your specific entries should be posted in Ask the Moderators.

    3. Yay! Just 2 questions.

The outfit has to be removable, but is it okay if it can only be put on and off with the doll's hands or head removed? (Eg because the arms or neck are too small to go over otherwise).

And doll has to be wearing the wig in the photos but does the whole wig need to be visible? Eg could it be covered by clothes or swept aside to show the back details or partially out of frame if it's big?

    4. Yay! :cheer:dance:cheer:celebrate

My brain is failing me, the part of:

Must cover The majority of doll's torso at minimum

Does it mean, the doll must be covered as much as possible?

Or does it mean the body neads to be covered as little as possible?

    5. An outfit? I'm doomed. :sweat Unless, maybe if I stick mostly to super simplistic techniques. I have a personal two day deadline, so we'll see how this goes...

EDIT: Oh, do we have to make shoes?

    6. So excited for this! I know exactly what I want to do, can’t wait to get started!

      Just a couple of questions:

As long as we stay within the $20 limit, are there any other limits, like yardage or types of materials we have to use or can’t use?

Is it okay to make accessories to go with the outfit, for example gloves, jewelry, handbag, socks, shoes, etc?

    7. What a huge challenge! Especially after the lace extravaganza lol Put self doubt aside and get crackin'! :)

    8. Yikes! Sewing, my nemesis! Well, here’s my chance to become the seamstress I’ve always wanted to be. Only a week...my poor fingers as I don’t like sewing machines. Go, go!

    9. As long as you can remove it without destroying it, it’s fine if head/hands need to be removed.

The full wig doesn’t need to be shown as long as we can tell the wig hasn’t been altered.

It means that you need to cover most of the doll’s torso.

You do not need to make shoes, but any other accessories must be made for this competition.

No limit on yardage, materials, or fabrics.
Any accessories (aside from shoes) must be made by you for the competition.
We aren’t requiring entrants to construct shoes (premade shoes are fine).

    10. I have a bit of a daring idea...and I'm going to do it! This is going to be a great challenge. :celebrate

Edit: Nevermind I'm too stupid to sew

    11. @eleniel Thank you for the clarification! I'll be going to the fabric shop first thing tomorrow! I'm so excited!

    12. Be bold! I can't wait to see your entry!

      • x 1
    13. I have a fantastic idea for this challenge, I hope I can pull off what I am seeing in my head!

    14. Oof, I can't do it. Moving AND going on a family vacation AND going to a new job is too much stress already. Good luck to everyone!

    15. I have two ideas and I'm torn on which way to take it :doh well, I better sleep on it and decide in my dreams cause both ideas require a lot of time, and that's the one thing I'm short on this week. :sweat

      Good luck everyone!

    16. You totally CAN do it ❤ but only if it makes you happy. If it makes you stressed then drop it like a hot potato:)

    17. Packing crafting supplies in a carry-on, flying cross country, and trying to get my entry submitted using airport Wi-Fi? Sure, why not?! It's gonna be fun!

      • x 2
    18. I haven't done much sewing and I've never made my own pattern plus I'm super busy this week! But, somehow, I feel like I might be able to submit something decent now that I have a half-baked idea! *fingers crossed* *nose to the grindstone*

      • x 1
    19. Question - if you are only participating for fun (ie; you didn't have time to partake in Challenge 1) is it still okay to do this challenge for fun if you don't have a wig made? It says that your doll MUST be wearing the wig but if you didn't create one then do they just wear a normal one?

    20. Not a mod, but I believe it said in the main triathlon page you could enter just for fun. When submitting the wig entry there was an option asking if the entry was for fun or prize.

    21. I finally cleaned up my sewing area! So I can actually start today, hopefully :)

    22. Maybe I just missed it, but are there limitations about sewing vs knitting/crocheting/sculpting/etc? Like must it mostly be *sewn* except for accessories, or is any construction technique ok?

    23. I read it twice and didn't see anything indicating it had to be sewn.

As a sort of add on to @Kittzel question, as long as it meets the removable and doll can move in it criteria, could you:
Glue pieces together (either fabric pieces in place of sewing or hard pieces to make armor)
Use a method like a hotglue head cap to make a base and decorate it

    24. Where do we vote on the first round???

    25. They haven't put it up yet.

      • x 1
    26. Thanks, I thought I was just not looking in the right place.

      • x 1
    27. I finished my entry today and I'm SO excited about it! Usually, I complete the challenge, but don't keep the outfit because it doesn't actually fit the doll's style or I'm not happy with the quality, but this year I'm so happy with how it turned out and how well it fits my doll's personality, it's going to stay in their wardrobe! :love Thanks Mods for inspiring me to make something my doll needed more than I ever realized! :aheartbea

      • x 5
    28. @CloakedSchemer oh, wow, you are finished already! I can’t wait to see your entry as it sounds inspired. It’s wonderful that you made something your doll needed, and had fun doing it.

I’m almost finished with mine. Since I have extra time, I’m going to make a few more things that go with the outfit. This year I too was inspired by the mods into finally working on a doll I’d been putting off. It’s been a lot of fun so far!

      • x 1
    29. *crazed cackle* People are already finished?! I'm still researching patterns... (yes, yes of course my brain chose the thing that's possibly the most counter-intuitively put together garment I've ever seen)

    30. Any construction method is okay as long as you created the outfit and the outfit is removable - you can glue things together or staple them or tape etc just don't glue/tape/etc anything directly to the doll - if you don't want to sew, you don't need to!

      • x 2
    31. I only finished already because I had part of yesterday and all day today free to do it! The rest of the week is looking pretty busy for me, so I had to work fast in the time I had to make sure I could get it completed in time.

But there’s still plenty of time, I know you can do it too! Go go go! :sumomo:

    32. Oh gosh, I haven't started and Resin Rose is this weekend. *_* I know what I want to do. I have a feeling I'll be crafting into the wee hours like a madwoman because even if I some how don't finish in time, I want this outfit to happen for my doll.

Go go go! You can do it!

      • x 1
    33. I'm using the tri to force me to work on finishing my bjd's look lol. It's nice to have a contest entry and a wearable peice :)

    34. Crafting on the go has been amazing and really forced me to explore creative new ideas, thanks D.O.A. for the push!

      • x 3
    35. Phew! I got mine submitted! This has been fun! One more challenge to go!

Keep working everyone, you still have plenty of time. Seeing all of your hard work is so amazing!

    36. Had so much fun with this second challenge of the triathlon, now I'm just looking forward to the third and last challenge! Will be fun seeing what people came up with for this weeks challenge, so many awesome entries during the first round. Keep up the good work people!

    37. Thanks DoA Mods for putting on this Triathlon! For challenge two you motivated me to work with a material that has always intimidated me, but now I'm not so scared of it anymore. And I thought I was happy with my wig from challenge one, but I think I like my outfit from challenge two even better. :D

I'm really excited to see all the creative entries!

      • x 3
    38. I can't wait to see what kind of outfits will go with the wigs! I'm really curious about several of them!

    39. Well, guess this is the end of the line for me... I have to go out of town for the next 3 days, so no time to finish/submit my entry. Maybe next year...

    40. Question: can we use a doll stand for pictures in this challenge? I can technically make my doll stand without one, but it took me a solid 20 minutes last time :sweat

    41. You can use a stand.

      • x 1
    42. Good luck to everyone entering the second round! I just submitted my entry, and it's been an arduous journey. I'm very tired (lol). Looking forward to the third round and seeing all of the beautiful outfits! :chibi

      • x 1
    43. Ugh that was a hard round. Several times I was ready to give up. I hope everything went easier for fellow competitors and I'm sure yours will look heaps better than mine!
Now to put my feet up until next challenge!

    44. Just submitted! Phew, this one was very time consuming but I'm pretty proud of the final result. Can't wait to see everyone's entries <3

    45. I'm so glad I always plan to submit a full day before the deadline, just in case. I went to crop and submit my pictures Friday night and my main picture was blurry. I didn't notice until I uploaded it to my computer and it was too late to take more pictures because it was night time so the lighting wouldn't be very good. So Saturday was retakes day and I was able to submit it in time.

I'm really enjoying this triathlon. I find I'm actually making things that I like and will probably use.

    46. I bit off waaaaaay more than I could chew. My concept changed like 4 times, and there were terrible mishaps and setbacks (and a melting!!), but I'm proud of what I turned in! I'm very excited for everyone else's entries. But sooo tired.

    47. A melting?? I sure hope the melting was part of the costume and not the doll!

I'm super excited to see what everyone has done for this round, and the results from the last round. I think I'll probably rank somewhere near the bottom, there were just so many awesome wigs better than mine. lol But, I'm ok with that, with the skill and talent I saw in those entries, they deserve to rank higher than me!

I feel slightly more confident about this round and love my entry, but I might change my mind once I see what everyone else did!

      • x 1
    48. Fortunately it was the costume. I lost a large bit of fabric, but it was a learning experience. I would be sobbing uncontrollably if it was my doll and not posting hahaha! I feel the same way about the wig round, but I'm just happy everything I did seems to mesh well together.

    49. Oh, I'm sorry your costume was damaged and you lost so much fabric, but I'm happy your doll is safe! I guess s/he gets to feel like one of the models wearing one of the "dangerous" fashions! haha

    50. holy god... I finished it in time!:eusa_pray Here's 6 am and I thought I can't make it in time >n< I'm exhausted but I'm satisfied with the result^^ I hope my effort will show up on the pictures :frownyblush:
      Everyone, nice job! :thumbup:hug:

      • x 1
    51. I wasn't sure how to feel about my entry, but after taking photos, I really like how it came out, I almost couldn't decide which I like best lol.
Congrats to everyone who got their entries in!!
That 3rd round is scary though T-T

    52. Wow. It may not exactly be prize-worthy, but I'm pretty proud of my entry. I rarely sew and I had to do it all by hand, I've never made a pattern before, and I had to finish half of the work in a cramped hotel room, but I was able to finish and post it in time and it actually looks a lot like I planned! I can't wait to see what everyone else came up with. And congrats to everyone who made it this far!

      • x 3
    53. It makes me so happy to read everyone being so positive, even with some setbacks! I'm in the same boat, I wasted so much fabric to my own errors but it was such a great learning experience. Never using that fabric for doll clothes ever again though, ugh. xD In the end I'm really happy with what I managed for the 2nd round, I was so sure I wouldn't be able to finish everything I'd planned, but I did! I'm pretty sure I won't be placing, but I'm really excited I made something my doll can use that's made just for that doll. c:

      Good luck to everyone!!

    54. I thought it was genius choice of fabric I had made, showed to be a pain to work with, but I did it! Sounds like I'm not the only one having trouble what fabric goes, but still managed to pull through. Can't wait to see what you have all managed to put together!

    55. My fabric choices were a pain in the butt but thankfully I didn't have to throw things away :o I'm pretty familiar with what I used so I knew what I was getting into when I set out :XD: can't wait to see everyone's entries!!

    56. Lots of admiration for those of you pulling through with difficult fabric! I chose fabrics that were very familiar to me because I knew exactly what I wanted to make, but it’s something I’ve never made before and just figuring out the style and pattern was enough of a challenge without throwing in difficult fabric!

    57. I did the same :sweat I'm dying to see everyones entries. It sounds like everyone went all out!

    58. While I'm super excited by all the entries for round 2, I'm also kinda sad about the ones who dropped out. There were a few in round 1 that I loved and was hoping to see what they'd do with the rest! Buuuut, I also totally understand lack of materials, funds, time, motivation or too much stress. These contests should be fun, no shame in dropping out if it's not fun anymore. <3

And now, time to go try to narrow down my votes! :dance
