VOTE FOR ROUND THREE HERE! VOTING IS NOW CLOSED - MEMBERS WHO POSTED IN ASK THE MODERATORS AND REPORTED BEING UNABLE TO VOTE WILL BE ABLE TO VOTE IN THEIR ASK THE MODERATORS THREAD. THERE IS AN ERROR WITH THE VOTING FORM. IF YOU CANNOT VOTE, PLEASE POST IN ASK THE MODERATORS BEFORE THE VOTE CLOSING TIME. This is the third – and last – of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of three fabulous rewards as announced here. You've crafted an exquisite wig that uniquely suits your doll and dressed them to impress and turn heads, now... show us the magic moment when it all comes together! Where do they make their grand entrance? How do they look in their element? Build the set where your doll is the belle (or beau) of their ball and show us your doll in their magic moment. Your set must: Set the scene for your doll's grand entrance. Fit thematically with the wig and outfit you created in the first two challenges. Be large enough to wholly contain your doll. Have no less than two walls and either a ceiling or floor. Be comprised entirely of items created by you for this challenge. No using a doll couch you already owned as a couch for the set. That said, you do not need to build lighting from scratch - we want to encourage creativity, not electrocution! If you have any questions about your concept, props, or whether your idea for repurposing an item is acceptable, please post in Ask the Moderators. Your shot must: Include your doll wearing the wig and outfit from the previous two challenges Show the full crafted scene Be no more than 800 pixels on the longest side Materials Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials. Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible. If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest! Rules You may submit only one entry. The components of the image must have been created specifically for this contest: this includes any furniture, props, or backgrounds. (You may include other dolls if they are needed in order to tell the story in a compelling fashion. Their clothing can be pre-made if they are not key actors in the shot - any doll in an important or significant role must be wearing clothing constructed for this challenge.) Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your storytelling, craftsmanship, and styling skills, not your amazing use of Photoshop. You must use the same on-topic doll you used in the previous two challenges. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished outfit or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification. IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification. All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements. How to Enter You will need to provide the following photos: A single image which shows your doll in their grand entrance, their magic moment. An image showing the entire diorama without the doll present. a collage image showing notable details a photo of recycled materials used (before use) a photo of purchased materials used (before use) a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6) Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 800 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry. Do NOT submit your images as links. Please follow the directions on the entry form to insert your images. You will be uploading your images directly to DoA. If you are not sure about this, please view this short tutorial before submitting your entry. Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry. You may title it however you like. ENTRY IS NOW CLOSED Do not contact the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter. Voting, Points and Prizes This is the third task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated for a prize in all three challenges. If you participated for fun in a previous round you cannot participate for the prize. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge. Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification. We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years – pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests and you will use the same code name for all three rounds of the triathlon. Members will have four vote points to distribute to four different entries based on the following criteria: Narrative skill. Creative use of materials. Concept development. Artistic merit of final photograph. Important Dates Challenge Three Opens: Sunday August 18th 12am EDT Submission Deadline: Saturday August 24th 11:59pm EDT Challenge Three Voting Opens: Sunday August 25th 3pm EDT Challenge Three Voting Closes: Saturday August 31st 11:59pm EDT If you have general questions about the contest, feel free to post in this thread. Questions about your specific entries should be posted in Ask the Moderators. Please check our useful FAQ of past triathlon questions to see if yours has already been answered here!
I'm kind of feeling the same way. I already have permanent room dioramas I'm having to tear down to move, and since I've already cleaned out almost every craft thing I had I'll have to buy literally everything for my entry, and I kind of don't want to buy a bunch of stuff to build a diorama just to throw it away. This is so hard for me because normally I LOVE building dioramas for my dolls! (Sometimes as much or more than I love the dolls themselves...) However, since I do adore doll dioramas, I am very much looking forward to seeing what everyone else ends up building!
I have never made a doll diorama before but now seems like the perfect time to try! It will have to be huge and I’m kind of excited about that. I already have some ideas and I know exactly what I want to do for the floor, I think.
I'm so relieved we are creating something physical. I was worried it was going to be a gif or a stop motion or something else digital. This is something I can do, and sounds like a fun project.
I have to admit, I was hoping the final round would be for a special prop and not for an entire scene as the last round caused 20 hours of overtime past what I thought it would take. I had a concept for making a single prop that I thought would take long enough but composing an entire set definitely made my heart leap in alarm. I might be lucky just to finish walls and the particular prop. Good luck to everyone keeping on for this one. Misery loves company right?
All the other contests have a max of 800 pixels on the longest side. Is the 600 pixels here a typo or does this entry have different size requirements?
Can we use photoshop to edit out doll stands? I managed to make my doll stand for the previous rounds, but I think that may be harder here.
Oh nooooooooooooo. I have a few ideas, but my biggest regret with this whole challenge is not picking a smaller doll. That regret is now front and center. Welp, I got this far so I'm turning in something! I'm going to give it my best!
Well, this is going to be interesting I was just admiring some dioramas on Instagram earlier, too lol.
Man, I'm not sure what to do with this challenge. I feel like the only idea I have to go with my doll's look will be too simplistic. I guess I'll just try to push myself though.
I panicked last night over this and was planning to give up, but after sleeping on it (and being encouraged by my sister), I’m going to try. I’m not sure if I’ll manage to finish, but I’m going to make an attempt!
I have a question about the photos. Why do we not need a photo of the diorama alone, but only one photo with the doll? I'm asking since my photography/compositioning is terrible and also taking a photo of the set alone would probably help in showing off the set (detail photos don't necessarily show where every thing is). Mainly I'm scared that I'll ruin the photo with the doll in it and thus have less chance of getting votes. Another question, if you say two walls, do they have to be next to each other? Do they have to touch? Can 1 wall be a 1st floor and a second wall be a 2nd floor? Do the walls need to be actual walls in the strictest meaning, or may we have an imaginary wall?
You can have additional walls and floors but you need at least two walls (panels running vertically) and at least a floor or ceiling (panel running horizontally). The two walls do not need to touch each other but building a corner will likely be easier for many entrants. We added a requirement for a photo of the diorama without the doll as well. Additionally, the collage of details does not require the presence of the doll.
A diorama? Yes! Right up my alley! I’ve already have an epic idea. Thankfully I can devote all week to this challenge. This will be a LOT of work, but I’m going all out!
I feel the same way. I'm going to think about it some more and see if I can genuinely make something I would want to actually keep in the end. For the wig and outfit, those are things I can happily own and keep after the contest, but a themed diorama for a scale I don't want a diorama for? Not so much... Like @Septunie, I was hoping for a prop. That said, I really think that event is challenging, and I'm truly looking forward to seeing what everyone is inspired to make! I am sure you all will do a phenomenal job!
Oh, this one will be tons of fun, have the perfect idea and all! Sad to hear people having to drop off though, you're all so talented, can't wait to see everyone's outfit tomorrow owo
Unfortunately, I'm leaving for 5 days. It's impossible for me to make a diorama. Not enough time. I regret, beacause I had fun in the previous 2 rounds. Good luck everyone!
One question to the mods: is it ok to submit the recycled materials picture as a collab? I'd like to get my base going asap even without a clear plan, and would like to take a photo of what I'll be using as a base etc before I do anything to it. That aside, I'm so excited, this will be fun! I've wanted to try this out for a while, and this is a great opportunity to give it a try so I'm prepared for the one I'll be getting to eventually. I'm so glad I didn't pick my largest doll for this. I'm really sad to hear so many people need to drop out for this challenge. I do understand though, this is a big one. I wish you all the best, and hopefully at least some of you will still be able to enter!
oh wow, that's quite the challenge! It's not easy to build a set without a descent budget! Even more so if you used a big doll. DON'T GIVE UP! You can do this !!!
I completely forgot to take a pic of some of my poster board before it glued/taped it together. :/ should I take a pic now or just of the board I have left untouched?
I’m off and running! I went to the craft store yesterday and got the main building supplies. I’ve already spent 7.5 hours on this. Glad I have a whole week.
Round 2 is up for voting here! If the form doesn't work for you, let us know in Ask the Moderators - we will make sure you have an opportunity to vote!
Well, I guess I’m out. My doll was sitting in front of me as I was working on the diorama and I accidentally knocked her over, messing up the delicate parts of her wig. I had to remove the broken pieces so I think that disqualifies me. Good luck everyone, may your luck be better than mine!
Noooo! Is there any way you can repair the wig? Maybe pose her in a way it won’t be noticeable? Cinderella’s dress turned to rags at midnight, but she still got her happy ending, maybe you and your doll can too?
Are wood glue and nails counted as part of the materials budget if needing to be purchased? My last tube of wood glue seems to have grown legs and walked off somewhere.
Glue is allowed without cost because it is a "basic tool" and I would think nails would be allowed because they are for structure but a mod would have to verify.
I asked then Mods if I’m allowed to repair it, so we shall see! But even if I am technically disqualified I think I might still enter the 3rd part just for fun because I’m actually really looking forward to building my heinously large set.
Best of luck to you! I hope you’re still allowed in, it was a tragic accident, not a deliberate rule breaking. Either way, yes, do finish! I want to see every diorama made for this contest!
I sincerely hope you're allowed to fix it and continue! That's such a devastating accident. D: I'm glad you're still planning on building the diorama! I've been agonizing over a few details on my own entry, but I happened to find suitable things in my closet after all! Buying extra for years and never throwing anything away is finally paying off.
The Mods said yes, I am allowed to repair it! I’m super happy I will still be able to enter. Thank you Mods! I’m having a lot of fun with my diorama so far but there is a certain part that will take a long time so I need to hurry up and get on that before its too late! Luckily repairing the wig shouldn’t be too complicated.
Great news! I knew our mods were awesome and understanding! Now go go go, get that difficult part done!
Update to the first post specifying that you do not need to build your own lighting - we want to encourage creativity, not electrocution! If there are certain items you absolutely cannot construct for one reason or another and instead need to replace with a pre-existing item, let us know. Depending on the circumstances we may allow it as long as the items are modified prior to use.
Does the entire diorama need to be clearly visible for the "magic moment" photo or can we make it more artistic? For example, is bokeh allowed?
For the first photo (with the doll) it does not. We do need to see the full thing in the without doll photo and in the detail collage. Any artistic additions (ie bokeh) should be done in camera and not added in with photoshop. Any photoshop use has to be minimal and ideally will be limited to things like color correction or removing a doll stand.
Does the doll *have * to be wearing the outfit in the pic as well, or can the outfit just be in the picture?
Finally, entry all finished and submitted. This challenge was a lot of fun, just wish I had had a lot more space! Wouldn't have hurt for the set to be twice as big, but what are you gonna do. Now I just look forward to see everyone's entries, good luck peeps!
Got the diorama finished. I’m just working on a few props and then I will submit. It’s been a great three weeks. I’m so glad I entered this year.
I still have more work to do on mine (so, so much work), but today I gave in to distraction. In my defense, I just received my two new dolls I put on layaway a year ago I'll make up the time... somehow xD
I know the feeling, I think I used somewhere between 15 to 20 hot glue sticks on mine, but somehow my cheap little gun survived. I have never used so much glue on anything in my life!
Got mine submitted. I’m going to relax. This last challenge was tough. Especially since I have a frozen shoulder. But it was totally worth doing! Thank you DOA!
Well my original plan for a certain part didn't work out so I am going with plan b! I'm nearly finished at least!
