I checked out the link, and all the resin colours seemed way too dark to me. I suspect it's a prime example of how lighting affects the colour of resin in a photo. I have dolls in most of those same resin colours, and they are nowhere near as dark as shown in the photo. For a true comparison the photo would need to be taken in bright, natural, daylight, with a camera that can capture true colour. That alone would be a huge challenge.
@MB Lilac - They are on the dark side, yes, and that's despite having multiple lights at close proximity. My older camera tended to go the other direction and wash things out, and the newer one likes to make things too dark. Unfortunately, I could only lighten them so much without it distorting the color. I need to learn how to use the manual settings better. It would be nice if taking photographs outside was more feasible, but most of the year here is windy or rainy or both. I just figured it would still be useful to some people as a comparison between the colors. At least it's pretty representative of how my dolls look in their no-sunlight-allowed room?
You do not need manual settings. You DO need to learn how to use exposure offset; the little [+/-] tool. Some years ago I wrote a short tutorial on digital photography exposure. You can find it here http://www.photosbytom.net/PDF/Exposure.pdf
I had fun playing with my dolly daughters the other day I love the Tania sculpt. I wish Iplehouse could've continued making it. Both of my little girls are Tanias. I love them so much
Some more Tania spam. Matilda is discussing photography with Daisy (lati Cara on KDF body) and Lilja (Lati Shaina)
I scored a special real Daniel via the auction! He's got a couple of dents I'm going to try to boil out, but I'm so thrilled to have him; he was one of the first dolls I was ever interested in. Still building a wardrobe, getting fabric in and altering patterns and whatnot, so he's just in boxers for now, but we're going to for a 00s jock vibe, I think.
Awesome, make sure you show us how the dent removal goes, take pictures!! I'm certain that boiled water doesn't hurt the resin, I've done it a few times myself, even with real skin - no discoloration, at least not from the boiling water. i think time and definitely sunshine will have an effect, but not heat. Just thought I'd tell you to give you courage in case you need it. He's gorgeous, congratulations!
As far as yellowing goes, the reaction for polyurethane adds an oxygen atom to the molecular structure. Anything that speeds up the reaction will eventually cause discoloration, including excessive prolonged heat. However, my oldest resin girl is now old enough to legally drink, and she went from the color of snow to the color of buttercream frosting. Even across so long a time and several prolonged instances where the AC was out in 100+F weather, the difference wasn't absurd. Even with very little UV stabilizer added to her resin, she didn't turn into a banana.
Is that the chemical reaction? That's interesting! I've successfully reversed the yellowing in my sewing machine plastic using hydrogen peroxide cream made for hair dressers and sunshine, so the problem is definitely chemical. I would never do it on my dolls though, far too scary! Computer cases, sewing machine plastic n such, is a great experiment though But for all I know I hastened it's death??
Oh! That's great! I have something I need to try that on, not a doll! I searched Amazon and there seem to be various strengths. What brand or strength did you use?
I don't remember, Nancy. But something like this, which comes in different strengths and sizes (I bought 2 32oz, LOL, but didn't use that much of it) I don't remember the strength I used, and I'm not home ATM to see, sorry What I did was slop on a layer (it's a cream so sort of stays on) and then wrapped the items with plastic wrap then put them in the sun, moving the direction every X amount of time to get good sun exposure from all directions. I've seen people use some kind of motorized turn tables to get the best exposure, but I didn't have one. It *seems* to have worked fine for ... you know, sewing machine plastic? Computer plastic? that kind of thing. Been a few years and seems OK still.
I restrung my JID Jerome, Guillaume, for the first time a couple days ago, and he remains my most stable, rock-solid stander ever. Even enough to support his sister, Anouska (MNF Chloe).
My gray alien boys. JID Joshua, the other is DZ Carter. Lately I've been thinking of Benny again. I had her long ago when she first released as a limited doll. But back then her teenager body did not work for me as I originally wanted her as a child character, and so I sold her not many months after owning her. But I've always really loved the Benny sculpt and can't stop thinking about her. Also now that there is a new small bust body, making her a child character would be easier. I have no idea which resin color to go for though. I've seen owner images of her in different colors and she look really cool in all of them. I do have an idea of getting her in WS, but what is the color the darker skin Benny in this image got? Margo and Mina | (Iplehouse Benny) | Diana | Flickr
I don't know if I should make Benny an albino like character or get her in a lighter tan and give her vitiligo I can't order her yet but I would have done it right now if I could. I really miss having a Benny.
Wow! Beautiful photo!!! I've always wondered if the Minifee girl + J.I.D. Iplehouse guy pair would be harmonious... Now I see - they look great together!!!
I’m planning to eventually get a Benny to shell my original character Amanda and she has albinism (small note: person first language is preferred by the community) I think Benny is a beautiful sculpt and I think it would be well worth the wait for JID Doll Choice is as they say, “on air” because the ebony resin such a lovely shade.
Thank you! I love my little pair of siblings. If you want more comparison photos, I'm happy to take them for you.
God! Thank you!!! I think that many people will be interested in such photos!!! I will definitely be happy and I will wait!!!
My poor Benny has spent way too long hidden away in a box so I thought it was time to give her some attention, and I've fallen in love with her all over again. Her name is Kate by the way. Kate 1
Anybody else loving their JID dolls? Tania (regular) was my first Iplehouse doll of any type. She and Stephanie (Noctarcana Circus Tania) are my beloved BJD daughters, along with Momoko doll Madalaine. I love to spend time with them
I still love mine! Seems they don't get as much love anymore, unfortunately. I think they were the dolls that filled the void before the mature mini/fashion size BJDs came along since they were a lot more mature than most dolls at the time in this size range. I've always thought of the mini size as teenagers, so that's what mine are. I have a Tania, Tatiana, I, Isar and two Ryans. I got new versions of Tania, Tatiana, and I when Iplehouse discontinued the sculpts in 2016-2017, and I just got faceups for all of them within the past year: (pic is clicky link to Flickr if broken!) Iple released a couple of boys while I was away from the hobby and I'm considering both of them. One to reshell one of my Ryans and the other to shell a pair of twin characters that I have, since I'm revisiting that storyline right now. I also still have Owen on my Want List...
I think you are right. Even though there were mature minis around, most of them still had a body like a child with boobs stuck on (literally, when the demand for more mature bodies increased, many companies just started to offer an upper torso piece with bigger breasts). I have a kid delf who is exactly like that from about the same time the JID came on the market. Don't get me wrong, I still love her and humans sometimes goes through a stage like that before the rest of the body catches up, but with the JID there is no question, that is not a child's body and the small bust option does nothing to change it. Even the contemporary Unoa and the Lati Blue who were clearly not little kids bodies were a bit more slender and toned down, but the JID has curves! That's what drew me to them in the first place. I have a Tania who was my second full BJD and she is ancient, by BJD standards. She is heavily yellowed (she was already when I bought her second hand and she was only two years old then) because she is from those early days when companies were still figuring out ways to prevent it. But the funny thing is, that even though she is nothing like the White Skin she originally was, she is still beautiful and her color photographs surprisingly well. I've had people mistake her for Real Skin in pictures. Mine represents older teens to young adults. Tania's face could pass for younger, especially on the new child proportioned body, but my other JID is a Boris and he could not pass for a child. He may be stylized and big eyed compared to a realistic human, but with that jaw and nose? No way! He even has a hint of a cleft chin. I do sometimes wish Iplehouse came out with new mature male JID, but there are so many other options out there now, it's not quite as impossible to find dolls that fit in with each other anymore.
Such cute dolls, Quirked! And another Tania owner with you, Lillith That's so nice I hear you two about the size being what it is. In isolation, my Tanias pass as little girls, but when put with my mature SD dolls, they look a bit more mature than I'd have expected. I still make it work, but it's a little bit off. I've seen smaller Iplehouse dolls, and while the height might be what I'm looking for, the proportions (in things other than curves, in any case) would be a bit too young. I remember when Iplehouse started offering more mature hands for the JID. I don't know if that was before, after, or at about the same time as the FID's debut, but it was a stopgap for making a JID appear more mature. Even with a larger bust, the regular hands still look like kids' hands. The regular hands are part of what adds to the little girl look for me. Of course, then we got the FID, and that became the mature 1/4 option. It's funny because I don't consider my JIDs 1/4. I consider them 1/3 children. I don't even think about the curves of the JID body. I don't like looking at my girls that closely when they don't have clothes on I would've figured any shape was kind of like how Barbie dolls are shaped to make clothes look good. Now, my mature SD Iplehouse dolls, I admire their curves, but my little girls are my little girls I see what everyone means with other head sculpts, though. Tania seems to be one of the youngest. Other heads don't come across as correct for my universe to me. I've seen, I believe she was Alice, and she seemed okay for my universe, but that's it. It is really cool what people can do from doll to doll with JID. My Tania met another Tania a bunch of years ago, and this Tania was so wildly different!
@Gamma Ray I think the fact that you can make these dolls represent so wildly different things, despite the fact that they are literally cast in the same mold is the coolest thing! That photo shows it perfectly. And Tania is one of those very versatile sculpts that can look so very different depending on styling. I replaced the old hands of my Tania with the new ones some years ago. The old hands looked off next to my other dolls, mostly because I so often pose her with a Lati Shaina who happens to have incredibly slender and detailed hands, so it was two extreme ends of the spectrum. And even more so because they didn't seem to quite fit the over all look of the body. I see what you mean about them looking young, I never thought about it in those terms. The golden age for the mature heads was before the FID, after those were released the JID line got less and less attention and the few heads that were released tended to be on the childish side. Still pretty dolls, but not my thing. And they came out with the new child-proportioned body (basicly a KID body, sized up to JID height) and I lost interest, so I'm not up to date on their current direction.
@Gamma Ray - Thank you! @Lillith - JIDs are also pretty substantial when compared to the other mature-ish minis like Unoa, Minifee, Narae. My Minifees look so small next to them. They're honestly like short-legged SDs to me lol. Putting my Tatiana (who is supposed to be 16-18 in this form) next to her EID father is always hilarious. I suppose a lack of wardrobe options can also push people away from JIDs, especially if they don't sew (and have no interest in learning or can't). Iplehouse has a few options, but perhaps what's offered isn't the style that someone who is considering a JID would be interested in. And the old "What Fits?" threads are probably outdated by now, and DoA isn't as active as it used to be. These particular dolls are what pushed me to sew more and learn how to draft my own patterns, since most of the clothing offered by Iplehouse at the time didn't suit my tastes. Now my dolls having a limited wardrobe is all my own fault! And on the topic of the mature hands? Those fingers are sharp and I had a time putting that sweater on my Tatiana lol. All the more reason for me to get/make some dressing paddles!
I'm glad you liked the pic of the two different Tanias! It really goes to show how the individual owners can make their dolls their own and how versatile the sculpts are! Yeah, the "standard" as I'll call them hands really, really struck me as being younger. I must not have been the only one since the more mature hands came out later. I couldn't see my little girls with the mature hands I actually could stand to have the more mature SD sculpts to have hands that are a bit more on the slender side, but that's another story for a different subforum. The newer JID body is also something I never got into, but I found it interesting. It being a bit more slender, it could have benefits for fitment of clothes. The older JID body is a bit large. I don't think I'd make the change now even if age-related color matching wouldn't be an issue. If the KID was maybe 5cm taller and was available back when I got my first Tania, I might've gotten a KID, but I just think the current KID is a bit too young for what I was going for with my first Tania and the second one I got later.
You're welcome! Yeah, the older JID body size being substantial. I'm lucky that I got a lot of clothes that fit well over the years. In my mind, since my girls have the smallest bust (in my universe, no breasts, totally pre-puberty), it's an artistic choice that comes with clothing limitations. I always joke saying that they have big ribcages It is awesome that you make your own clothes. Iplehouse dolls in general seem to have their own special categories of sizes and proportions. I know on the more mature SD end, SartoriaJ clothes can be a good fit, but life ain't easy being an Iplehouse owner sometimes. Oh gosh, mature hands, childlike hands, stubby fingers, slender fingers, whatever. I dread sleeves. Sometimes I disassemble the hands from the arm just to put the arms through the sleeves... up the sleeves in pieces At least that's one thing BJDs have over more conventional dolls.
About getting hands through sleeves, I just put something over them and shove them through. A bit of paper or fabric works, but someone in the crochet thread suggested cutting the fingers from those thin cotton gloves sold with cleaning supplies and that's really cleaver.
I forgot to share when Kiran got his updated face up! Lady Maeve added a bit of realism to his Iplehouse face up, I got him some polos via Doll Peddlar, and a custom-color athletic set (hoodie, pants, and shorts) from KhalonDolls on Etsy (who specifically makes JID stuff!).
I still love my JIDs, although they don't get photographed quite as often since the fashion sized dolls arrived on the scene. For the longest time my JIDs were the adults in my msd world. It was also nice that they worked really well scale-wise with the KIDs and BIDs. This is a shot of most of my JIDs getting ready to attend a wedding....
Lillith, I've found that to help some in the fashion doll world where you can't always remove the hands, but sometimes things don't always slip through in one piece. Still, it helps some, and you can always try again. That's interesting about using the fingers from gloves for BJDs. I hadn't thought about that. The fingers would be long enough that you'd be able to keep the entire arm enclosed while pushing the hand and arm through the sleeve. I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks! dm_sof, your Kiran is so cool! And thanks for letting us know about KhalonDolls! That's such a good find! MB Lilac, your photos are always so wonderful I love my dolly daughters so much
I love how thick and robust the Jid body is. It was perfect for making a Thorin Oakenshield doll with a spare hyper-realistic 70cm head, the proportions were perfect. The wide shoulders REALLY made it work.
@Gamma Ray - Your Tanias look so sweet together. @Lillith - using the finger from a glove is a fantastic idea! I'm starting to get into crocheting more than just hats for my dolls, and I'm working up the courage to make my first sweater. Though for one of my larger Iple girls, I once used some empty bobbins from my sewing machine as makeshift dressing paddles when I was trying on a denim dress with slim sleeves... Right now I have ~this~ running in all available sizes on my 3D printer, so I have them available next time I have to battle with some sleeves in any size. @dm_sof - Kiran looks great! I love the Daniel sculpt. And that's great info about clothing for the boys (and girls)! @MB Lilac - photos of your dolls are always a treat to see. Everything is always so stunning; from the dolls to the outfits to the scenery EDIT TO ADD: I've been inspired to get out my boys. My other Ryan is out of sorts right now, but this guy is good to hang out:
Hello everyone. Wow it's been awhile. I went inactive in this hobby for a very long time but never sold my dolls. I liked looking at them even if I never took them out for photos any more. I haven't signed into DoA in over 5 years but I miss it. I miss actually doing stuff with my dolls and interacting with others in the hobby. I don't expect anyone to remember me but just wanted to pop in to say hi. Here's an old picture of two of my JIDS, Alex, he's a Colin and Fedora, she's a Cordelia. I also just realized they both just turned 10 Hopefully I can get some new pictures of them soon. IMGP6586
@Lillith and @EmanonUK Thank you for the welcome back! Here's one of my other JIDs who I never posted much about pre-hiatus but she is actually a hybrid. She's a Tania head on a Resin Soul body. I got just her blank head in the auctions Iplehouse sometimes does. For anyone curious the resin match is fantastic but her head is a tad big for the body which makes posing her head a little challenging. She doesn't like to hold her head up as a result. But I love her on a less bulky body. IMGP6769
Awwwww! Hello, Tania! Your Tania is so cute! Definitely a lot more mature than my Tanias, but still super cute I hope you're able to figure out something to help her body support her head. Maybe sueding or something.
Thinking of taking someone out for some pictures on Sunday. Any requests? I got my Colin, Cordelia, Tania, two blank Boris', and a blank Leona. Obviously my unfinished dolls don't get out much but I'm happy to take pictures of them if someone wants to see them.
I'd love to see your Boris dolls if it's no trouble. I really like the sculpt and rarely see them out in the wild.
Is there anyone here who knows whether Iplehouse and Supiadoll have any compatible resin matches for their colors? I’m mostly interested in NS or one of the lighter tan colors but I’m not too picky im considering getting a 1/4 girl, with an JID or FID head on a Supia minisup body, and while I realize their resins might never match 100%, it would be nice to find something that’s in the same ballpark so that it can be blushed to look similar. Would also greatly appreciate if somebody here have both an FID/JID doll and a Minisup and can show me pics of how well they fit together ❤️
Ask and you shall receive. They majorly need bodywork done so I decided to just take some pictures on my balcony instead of hauling them to a park and then getting annoyed with how floppy they are, but this did remind me why I bought them in the first place. Also, yes, one is in a kilt. As we all know Iplehouse made the JIDs a weird size and then neglects them in the clothes department so I only own 1 pair of jeans and 1 pair of shorts and felt weird stealing Alex's shorts for this. . For those wondering the kilt is actually meant to go around a can but it fits them perfectly.
I guess I'm a crazypants, but I've just bitten and placed an order for a JID Benny (original body style) and a JID Asa (new body style) - dark brown resin for Benny and normal for Asa (hovered between peach gold for her, but I didn't want her to be too pinkish). I know I like the original style body, but I'm excited to see what improvements have been made there. Also there are some lovely folks sewing gorgeous things for JID and FID (and I've found FID things to be largely interchangeable for the JID original body, just a little longer on the leg for trousers).
@equine-aurora Oh, they look great! Thank you! @Nissa Congratulations. Here is to a short wait time and a trouble free delivery!
I took my new Iplehouse JID Alice to the New York City doll meet yesterday. I've been feeling a bit iffy about her since getting her a couple weeks ago, but I think I'm warming up to her. I think light conditions heavily influence how she looks. I was holding her towards the end of the meet, and she was super adorable.
@Gamma Ray She is a very sweet sculpt. A bit sad looking, perhaps, maybe that is what throws you off? I think this is one of those sculpts where eye brow placement does a lot for the expression, so perhaps try a wig with shorter bangs, so that her eye brows show? Or experiment with iris size and eye placement. In any case, she is very pretty. I'm sure you can figure her out and make her work for you.
Thank you, Lillith Sad? Maybe. At home she looked kind of deadpan, I thought. I'm thinking maybe the light affects her a lot more than my other dolls. On the other side of what you were saying about her bangs, I had her wig positioned at the meet a bit more forward than it had been, and I think it was an improvement I am partial to bangs in general
My new (to me) JID Kassia had her first outing yesterday! I took her to the Central NJ doll meet. My SID Eva is her mommy, though I'm only having a bit of noncanonical fun because Kassia hasn't been born yet. I love Kassia so much. I'm not sure about the fishnets, though. She came with them, but my Kassia's a little girl. I think I'm going to take them off.
I took my Alice to the South NJ meet today. I learned something new about her! I didn't like her lack of range of motion in her head. I popped off her head cap, and I took a look to see what was up with the S-hook. I found that she has three slots for her S-hook! The only other doll I have that's like that is my nYID Olivia. Alice was made with the S-hook positioned all the way to the back. I tested it in the middle briefly and found her head to be better. I finally moved it to the front so she would have more range of motion to look upwards because she was spending time with her mommy today. It worked great! I'm very happy with this development
It's great she has the three slots inside her head to adjust the range of motion. That makes such a difference, It's interesting that not all of their dolls do. I have a quite a few Iplehouse dolls, and some have the slots while others don't.
It really does make a difference. I've used it to great effect with my nYID Olivia in the past. It also alleviates one of my concerns with JID Alice because the default position, which I thought was the only position, was really limiting.
