Naming Woes - Help and Resource List Ask for name ideas for your dolls, and help others with suggestions too! Yes, I'm rebuilding the list from scratch again (because darned if I know what happened to my backup file), so if I miss any good sites, let me know! And please do feel free to make suggestions for others, even if it's just a few - the more different points of view, the better. ^_^ I'll be adding more links from time to time as I find them. Thanks for this list. I am terrible at naming any of my dolls as I use them for models for the clothing I design and construct and seem to make them into different characters and cosplay all the time, hence they get stuck with the sculpt name of the character of the moment. I have never developed a character and bought a doll specifically for it. I guess I play with my dolls differently than most.
I don't know if there is a majority when it comes to how we use or play with our BJDs, but I've certainly met others who have kept the sculpt names for their dolls, or who primarily use them as dress-forms. ^_^ It's a creative hobby - enjoy it however you will!
can I just say thank you for existing? Naming characters/dolls is my weakest point, I'll be needing this list a ton~
This is one of the most helpful lists I've seen for not only dolls but it can even be applied to something like book writing or anything of the sort. Thanks for posting, I think this is a huge help to everyone in the community.
Oh wow, this is so helpful, coming up with decent names is always something that I struggle with. Thank you for putting this together.
Added some more links. ^_^ I know there are a LOT of things that could go under the "More Specific Resources" and "Surnames" categories, but I can't possibly list them all, so I'll stick with ones that seem particularly useful. Good luck name hunting! (Oh, and belated thanks to whoever made this a sticky!)
Oh man, thank you so much for this. I always have difficulties naming characters, especially when trying to be faithful to any culture.I'm pulling names from. Some of these links have already helped a ton, I've made more progress with some of my unnamed since seeing this last night than I have for months.
Thank you so much for making this. I'm about to get my first doll and I have no idea about how I am going to name him. This is helping a ton. Thanks Bunches!
Thank you so much! This is so helpful! (owning 10 dolls and none of them is named omg I am such a lazy person...)
Whoa, thank you! I always used Behind the Name but didn't realize how many other resources there are This is super helpful!
I recall a nifty name list I have used in the past that I will add here: Women's Stage Names for Belly Dance compiled by Saqra. A name list from various cultures (Arabic/Greek/African/etc.)
I'm currently trying to figure out if I want to/how to rename my girls. For a long time they've been Madelene and Lysette. But because they're going through some major changes, I feel like a name change might be in the plans. But there's something about the sounds of their names that I'm attached to. Something about the "len" sound and "-ette" sound that seems right. So... maybe something similar but not exactly. Lol I hope any of that makes sense Either way, I'll definitely be using this amazing resource list Thank you for putting it together!
Thank you for all the resources, @Sianserais . I found an angel name generator as well. Edit: Nameberry had another Angel Name Generator, of existing angels vs more made-up ones from what I could gather?
Naming characters is one of my favourite things, but also something I spend the longest time on... it has to feel right! I love the moment of finding a name that just "clicks" into place... saying it aloud a few times... writing it out... having it fill you with that intense, satisfied feeling of being just right... a great feeling! I already use a lot of these resources for my writing and when I'm coming up with new OCs, but having them compiled in a single list like this is like a dream come true. Thank you for all your hard work!
Found this and I'm mighty glad. Not only I might have a name combo for a character in the book I'm writting, it gave me ideas for the dolly I saw and I think this conviced me to get her - now I just need to scramble around for the money.
Don't forget the "Special Categories" for 20000 names! they do names by meanings as well and have them separated into different categories by themes. It's very useful!
Thank you very much for this resource! I am one of those people that can't figure out a name I like without a lot of help!
This list is wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to compile and maintain it. I'm finally breaking through my writer's block.
This is so helpful! I have been having the hardest time naming my crew. Only one came easily, the rest are so hard. This will be my focus now.
Thank you for this resource! It takes me forever to decide on a name, most of the time. An additional resource for names of fairies, elves and otherworldly creatures might be lists of dog and cat names. I actually have two cat name books. Some of them have categories for twins, triplets, ect., useful if you are adopting more than one pet/doll at a time. These books contain names a person might not use on an actual human doll, but are cute or weird in a good way. Of course, now there is the internet for such lists.
I finally figured out what to name my OT doll. She's very pale and just recently "came to life" with her first face-up. I'm going to name her Galatea. Super helpful list. Thanks again.
This is so helpful. I'll be honest I love buying dolls but for some reason I never name them and I just go years with nameless dolls.
Thank you for this list! I had a lot of fun with the victorian name generators, simply kept clicking 'generate' and wrote down the namens I liked. And then used behind the name to check what they meant. Very useful for doll owners and D&D players
Kate Monk's Onomastikon (KateMonk) is a really good naming resource too, especially for medieval names.
Thank you - I'm about 98% sure I used to have that one on the list, but it was one of the ones I didn't find when I went looking again!
Thanks! The surname links are especially helpful! I always have trouble with first names and usually skip last names altogether
I already have the Mom Junction site under the "search by region/culture/ethnicity" heading, but yes, that's a good one!
Thank you for rebuilding and maintaining the lists! There is a list of Turkish names on Behind the Name but here’s a larger additional resource for them too. http://www.turkishculture.org/lifestyles/turkish-culture-portal/names-meaning-321.htm
Fantasy name generators. Names for all your fantasy characters. Is one of my favourites i didn't see mentioned (You have a similar named one listed) They have everything - alien names, every kind of fantasy race, a ton of cultures, the styles of various fictional worlds - like the hobbit or star wars. It's great for fantasy and sci-fi and for last names, clan names, species and race names, there's a whole section for place name generators from whole worlds to amusement parks, magic schools, cities, graveyards. The description generators make great prompts. You can find everything from titles for your character to regular human names and surnames, to naming the species of elf they are or their vampire clan.
Hi, I found these lists Old fashioned, unusual and forgotten French girl names Old fashioned, unusual and forgotten French boy names The pages are in French, but it’s fairly easy to use, you just have to click on the initials. I’d say the names range from Middle-Age to post French Revolution.
