LOVE the theme this year! I'm actually excited for no triathlon because that is stressful at times...

Could someone explain to me what the "sock dress" means exactly? Is it just a pair of socks or?

 

@vam31 It is when you make an outift for a doll by using a human sock. The simplest outfit you can make is to cut the toe off, and cut arm holes, to make a kind of tube-top dress. If you Google "sock dress for dolls" you can see what they look like.

It was/is simple doll clothes made from socks but the reason it is funny is because once upon a time in the hobby ‘cheap sock dresses’ on bjd were not always looked upon with universal approval so it kind of became a stereotype or doll trope. The fact that newer people have to ask what it is shows that it has probably died down and is not a controversial thing anymore.

Hooray! I love August on DoA! I've been here every day for the past 12 years myself, so it's my personal DoA anniversary too.

And I must say the theme for this year is truly brilliant and so much fun for us all! I always join in on at least one of the contests as my small way of supporting the grand festivities, and this year I'm particularly excited to see all the entries...I just know they're going to be absolutely epic!

I came back after a full year off the boards (Photobucket dying just killed all my posting motivation), but when August hit, my brain said: Birthday time!

I’m also super sad to not see the Triathlon this year, as I don’t participate any more but make a huge point to vote in absolutely every contest. And I love seeing the amazing entries and their progression.

Maybe I’ll actually enter the smaller contests this year, as it seems they will take more creativity than time, which is something I currently lack.

Happy to be back, and hopefully I will find a substitute photo hosting site so I can be active in the community again. ❤️

This is a piece of pre-history that i uncovered today.

I wonder how many of these there are still around (and how many of the original 65 people that bought one are still around , mine is nr 31 and still has the bag with buttons glued in and the pattern insert is also still attached)

Im curious to know what is inside this magazine

 

She is a modded white skin old f-05 (f-03 or fully sleeping sister head) according to the inside of the magazine. And her owner called her Desdemona.

I can take more photo's of the inside if there is interest, a lot of love has been put in the issue, but it is off course highly outdated

There is a 3 page introduction to super dollfie (for new sd admirers and prospective sd owners) all focused on Volks.

Page 4 is: The tunica: An easy, no-sew, and historically accurate way to dress up your sd (or yourself!)
(And suddenly i realise that my entry for last years triathlon looks really similar to the drawing laura Gilkey made for this article, while i haven't seen this magazine in years, although my entry didn't opt for the no sew thing at all)
Page 8 through 11 are an interview with Dolls Drug Kingdom (DDK) a then well known group of 3 dress makers.

Pages 12 and 13 are in the middle and contain a hooded pullover sweatshirt and boorleg pants pattern and stapled in the pattern.
Page 14 is a guide to painting your doll (with acrylics, so using pastel isn't reallygoing back to basics at all according to me pastel is a new fangeled thing and pure undiluted acrylics is the way to go. No actually my first tries werehorrible and i had ordered a msd maggie diy kit from volks, so i had to make it work...... so maggy and i didn't work out at all )
Page 15 contains a poem and a meet up with Marina an old f-08 beauty owned by aimee steinberger.

Pages 16 to 18 are an ode to Desdemona, the covermodel.

Page 19 is named: we asked.... about peoples first thoughts when they saw a sd for the first time. (I thought they looked like big eyed bugs. I hated them. Biscuit)

And pages 20 through 23 are filled with a knitting pattern for a msd sized cat eared coat.

Page 24 is a thank you page and a promise is made to have a new issue out in march with info on making sd hats, making a kimono another knitting pattern and exclusive interviews, fiction art and (full colored) paper dolls. ( and in my case a plastic bag with 4 buttons)

According to my knowledge the 2nd issue never made it to print.

And only a limited number of magazines contained 4 buttons taped to the last page in a plastic zip bag to make the knitting pattern complete.

I believe the issue cost $10.

I'm lost, where are the link to the specific contests? How do we see the rules or especifications for each of them? I'm thinking about joining two of them (faceup and sock clothes), but I dont even see deadlines or this kind of basic information

yeah, I saw it just now. I think the photography would be good for me, but the deadlines are sooo close... I will se if I can join on time, it will be sad to not join even if I cant win.
