    1. Welcome to Den of Angels' 14th Anniversary Celebration!

      The past year has seen a lot of ups and downs for our hobby -- recasters have gotten bolder and even more unscrupulous. But, on the bright side of that awful reality, dollmakers are banding together to fight back, and more and more people who once supported the recast industry are making a conscious choice to stop supporting them, and support legitimate dollmakers and artists instead.
      And we are starting to see more and more new artists and doll companies come into being. This is what will see the legitimate BJD hobby triumphant in the end. People still have the drive to sculpt beautiful new works of art, even with the threat of recasters looming.

      With that said, our theme this year is...

      Back to Basics

      There is a lot to think about in the hobby - worrying about buying very expensive things, trying to find hard-to-find items, or getting a faceup by a popular artist, or trying to buy something from a very in-demand wig, clothing, or eye maker, and of course, the unique issues of navigating the secondhand BJD market.

      This year we would like our celebrations to focus on:
      Re-examining the important foundations of the hobby,
      Supporting the artists who make the hobby possible,
      Appreciating the simpler aspects of the hobby, and
      Appreciating what you already have.

      As such, we are scaling back the Anniversary contests slightly this year. We have decided that we will not be holding a Triathlon contest this year, and that there will be only two prizes for the other contests. There will also be no Newbie Swap event this year.
      This is due to a few reasons - dollmakers are under more pressure lately, so we are not asking for as many prizes to try to lessen the strain for them. Additionally, the mod team is unfortunately a little short on manpower over this month, due to scheduling conflicts. The Newbie Swap and the Triathlon are the hardest events for us to organize, and as things are, we will be unable to organize as effectively as we have before, so focusing on fewer contests will help everyone have a better time.
      So never fear! The bigger events will hopefully be back in future years, but for this year, qualified members will be able to enter the following contests:

      Back to Basics Faceup Contest
      Test your skills with a back-to-basics faceup challenge!

      It's So Basic Sock Extravaganza
      The sock outfit - the OG basic doll outfit!

      Bare Minimum Photography Contest
      Capture the intrinsic work of art that is a nude doll!

      We will also have a super-duper-secret-semi-off-topic contest as well!
      Look for it in Brigadoon!


      These contests, and many Just for Fun discussion threads will be going live over the coming days!

    2. I’m sad to see the triathlon will not happen this year...but also kind of glad as now I’ll be more encouraged to join some of the other contests! I’ve never entered the faceup contest before so maybe I’ll finally try that!

    4. Oh how exciting! I'm actually really loving the simplistic and clean feel of this year's "Back to Basics" theme. I know I've seen so many people in the hobby stressed out, upset, and dejected lately (by dolly stuff as well as regular life issues). So many need some R&R, myself included. Hopefully I can engage more this year with the celebration. ​

    8. I have no clothes for my dolls yet - this theme works pretty well for me :lol:
      It feels like the 13th anniversary was only a few months ago. At any rate, I think this is a much needed festivity right now, and I'm glad to see it. Let's all have a great time! :sumomo:

I'm really sad that there's no triathlon this year, I've been looking forward to it since last year T_T but it kind of doesn't suit the theme and I actually don't have time for it lol, so this might be good news, looking forward to the specifics of each contest though, since I might try them out.

    11. Congrats on 14 years DoA! This is a fantastic event! I love the themes, especially the OG sock dress! Adorable idea. Great job, I'm looking forward to seeing what members do and hopefully having some time to take part myself.

    12. It is sad that there will be no newbie swap this year, but I understand that it takes really a lot of time to organize.
      I've never tried to make a sock outfit, it will be interesting to finally do it. :) It's a must-have.

    13. Craft-wise I am in the slow lane at the moment, though the themes appeal to me so I'll probably enter the 3 contests. It would be my first go at DOA's anniversary celebration.
      Any idea when this starts? I don't want to miss anything.

      I dont understand what a basics make up is so I will wait until it is posted, the others I can understand enough

      this is fun, I hope that i will take part in it also since its a community celebration and think everyone should take part for fun

    28. Oh, phooey! I JUST redid the faceup for the one doll I have that doesn't have her factory faceup. Ah well, maybe I can celebrate with sock attyre for my other girls, they'd like that. The photography also sounds intriguing. Happy 14, DoA! :3nodding:

      It's sad though for the Triathlon, I was actually looking forward to cheer for everybody and vote freely since I can't participate again until 2022. ><

    33. The different contests will be going live over the next few days - and they all will be accepting entries for at least a full week, so even if you miss them going live right on their first day, you should still have plenty of time to catch them! :)

      All of the contests are stand-alone contests. :) You can choose to enter just one, or any combination - but there is no requirement to enter all of them.

    52. I've been kind of absent around here lately, but I'll be definitely tuning in for the celebration. :D

      Also, really do appreciate the theme. I didn't participate last year due to the challenges feeling so intimidating (I have some self-esteem/art-related issues that would've stressed me out big-time) at the time, and this takes that burdening weight off. I've got some old socks that could use a new lease on life that I'd love to work some magic on, love the basics faceup idea in general, and the nude minimalist photos intrigue me. It does have me wondering: will that mean taking general nude photos of a doll, or pre-faceup nude/blank photos?

With the simplistic themes I may enter this year as well...even try my hand at faceups which I'm not so great at..lol...I think we'll all miss the triathalon love seeing how creative people canbe...though I personally only entered once and wasn't able to finish the last leg.

    60. yay!! i love August on DOA! I remember participating in a stocking/sock dress contest here on DOA way back in early the early 2000's might try my hand at that one again. think still have that dress somewhere lol.
