VOTING IS NOW CLOSED This is the first of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of three fabulous rewards as announced here. Ball-jointed dolls are constructed in such a way as to have great presence, but there are some looks that just suit the individual doll better than others – and some hairstyles that work well on some dolls better than others. We challenge you to make a wig that, on it's own, conveys the most important aspects of your doll's personality. You may use a variety of materials – we always encourage the use of non-traditional and recycled materials – but you cannot use a traditional wig medium, so no mohair, no synthetic hair, no human hair, no feathers, no brushed yarn or fur or brushed wool, and your wig must communicate to the viewer something important about your doll's personality. This list of materials is not all inclusive. If you have questions about materials or requirements, please ask us! Make a wig that tells the viewer who your doll is or who they wish to be. Your wig can be any style but must cover the majority of your doll's head. Your wig can be made from any materials, synthetic or natural, as long as they are not traditionally or regularly used for wig making. Your doll must still be able to move and pose while wearing the wig. Your wig must be removable. (No painting or gluing directly to your doll!) Materials Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own household items or clothing, you may dumpster dive, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all. Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials. Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it. Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible. If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest! Rules You may submit only one entry. The wig must have been created specifically for this contest. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop. Wigs must be modeled by on-topic dolls. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished wig or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification. You must use the same doll for all three challenges. You will be required to use your creation from round one in all triathlon challenges. IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification. All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements. How to Enter You will need to provide the following photos: a front view of your doll standing wearing the wig a back view of your doll standing wearing the wig a collage image showing notable details a photo of recycled materials used (before use) a photo of purchased materials used (before use) a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6) a style shot of the completed wig showing the doll posing naturally Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 800 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry. Do NOT submit your images as links. Please follow the directions on the entry form to insert your images. You will be uploading your images directly to DoA. If you are not sure about this, please view this short tutorial before submitting your entry. Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry. You may title it however you like. ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED Do not contact the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter. Voting, Points and Prizes This is the first task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge. Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification. We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years – pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests. Members will have three vote points to distribute to three different entries based on the following criteria: Craftsmanship and attention to detail Creative use of materials Aesthetic appeal Important Dates Challenge One Opens: Thursday August 1st Submission Deadline: Saturday August 10th 11:59pm EDT (midnight) Challenge One Voting Opens: Monday August 12th 12pm EDT (noon) Challenge One Voting Closes: Saturday August 17th 11:59pm EDT (midnight) Challenge One Voting Results Post: Sunday August 18th If you have general questions about the contest, feel free to post in this thread. Questions about your specific entries should be posted in Ask the Moderators. Please check our useful FAQ of past triathlon questions to see if yours has already been answered here!
Can the wig be sculpted/solid? For example like Goumeng Jr. https://www.painted-wings.net/product/shoushou-1-6-gou-meng-jr/
will the item created in the first challenge of the triathlon need to be preserved for the future two challenges? EDIT: Woops i found the answer! I need to read this several times haha
Uh when you say front shot and back shot of doll standing wearing the wig? Does that mean full length shot of the doll feet to head? Or can it be a from shoulders/small of the back/from wherever the wig ends up sort of deal?
Does the doll wearing the final product need to have a faceup?; I have a couple of potential models in mind, but they are currently faceup-less as I haven't decided on how to paint them yet.
The wig cap can be anything. That's fine. That's fine to add, make it fancy wooo! It needs to show the wig, so if the wig is short you can just take a portrait of it if you want. That's one of the questions in the F.A.Q. but no, the doll you enter with does not need to have a face-up Doesn't matter as long as we can clearly see the wig you made (i.e. you cannot hide the wig behind clothing)
Just for clarification, since I have seen quite many feather wigs on dolls. Can feathers be used as materials, only as embellishments, or not at all?
I see that brushed yarn is not permitted - can yarn be used at all in this contest? If so, are any other yarn techniques banned?
Yeah, I asked a similar question in Ask the Moderators, but no answer yet, but it looks like it's been viewed, so they may be deliberating over it.
Yeah sheepishly raises hand! *Me too! I've asked about several possible borderline materials in ask the mods
in case it wasn’t already asked: is embroidery thread or unbrushed yarn allowed if it is only used as an embellishment?
Feathers can be used as embellishments but not as the main substance of the wig. Unbrushed yarn can be used for embellishments and in ways not typically used for wig making. For example, you cannot use unbrushed yarn to create dreds or braids. You can use these as embellishments.
If entries are not supposed to be identifiable to individual members, does this mean that we are discouraged from using rare dolls or dolls with unique painting/modifications in the contests?
That would be considered an embellishment which is okay. Remember though, all embellishments must be included on the wig in all three challenges - no removing it if you don't want it there in round 2 or 3.
And done Fuuuuu freaking out because I have until last year always watched from the sidelines and been amazed as the imagination, skill and talent. Decided to really push myself this year and do the triathalon because I always chicken out. But I really enjoyed an excuse to play Hoping we all do well!
Got mine done too, and this is my first time entering the triathlon. Decided I’d better stop being intimidated and just go for it. Can’t wait to see what’s up next! Also looking forward to seeing all the entries.
Just finished mine around lunch time. Super excited to see everyone's entry! And hoping I submitted everything right. I had to retake several photos becasue I missed that they had to be standing for the front and back shot
Will all photos be used during the voting process? If not, which ones will be used? The reason why I ask is because my doll has a body that is an exceptionally poor poser... Thank you
All photos will be used but posing ability is not one of the criteria you are being judged on. The “posed naturally” requirement is so the moderators can tell the doll is supporting the wig as it would a conventional wig. Some materials can be heavy and the doll needs to be able to support the wig without outside assistance.
Nevermind about the DSLR, something popped up financially. Probably couldn't have swung it anyway. I'll have to figure something else out.
Well... I have finished my wig, too. I got so nervous Yesterday, what I could barely move my fingers. This is my second time participating in triathlon. I hope my photos will be able to meet al the requirements. Can't wait to see all the wigs everyone made!
Whoop! Squeaking in just in time!! Fingers crossed I did everything right; I know the feels of entry paranoia! Good luck everyone, I am super super excited to see all the other entries.
I finally submitted everything! I'm so excited, I honestly love what I made even if nobody else likes it. I'm excited to find out what the next challenge will be!
Way to go!!! This is the best way to handle the triathlons! I hope everyone is feeling as positive and energetic as you are. Good luck everyone!
Does that mean no use of stands? I almost have my photos all ready, but I used a stand in them because it's really hard to get the doll I'm using to stand up...
Your doll can be on a stand, but you can't use a separate stand to support the wig. For example, no using fishing line attached to the wig to help support it from the ceiling due to weight etc. The doll can be on a stand but the wig needs to be held up by the doll itself and not rely on any outside support, just like a standard wig.
Coming down to the wire!! I know there are still some people squeaking in; so GO GO GO!! good luck everyone!!
It's almost time! This is my first time entering and I'm so excited! I highly doubt I'll win anything, but I'm trying my best and having fun.
Submitted! Yay It's been so much fun already to even make the wig, I can't wait to see everyone's entries!
I'm SO excited to see what everyone made! That's always the best part for me. Voting and seeing winners announced is great, but seeing ALL of the entries is the best by far! There are always so many creative ideas that never would have crossed my mind.
Pheeeew! I finished on time! Barely, but on time XD So extremly happy to participate, yeeeeey! Cannot wait to see all of Your entries ^^
Why does it say "Entries are now closed"? There should be another 21 minutes. I was just about to submit mine.
Okay, officially closed now! I left it open a few minutes to make up for the time it seems to have been prematurely closed.
I am so excited to see what everyone came up with! Seriously the best part of the triathlon is getting all kinds of new ideas and inspiration!! Didn’t manage to finish my entry in time, but there’s always next year! Good luck everyone!! You’ve got this!!!!!!!
*chews on fingers* I posted an entry, I hope it takes. My poor old laptop was doing it's best to get it in on time, and then there was the outage...... I tried. Regardless, I'm excited to see what everybody created! There's something about the triathlon that keeps bringing me back. (Besides the fact that after all this time, I still need auto correct to help me spell it every time.) Something about the time limits and outstanding creativity everybody brings to the table makes me really excited to play.
Please remember: This is run by volunteers, a lot of work goes into running this forum that we do not see. Please, please, please understand and be patient
