Contest 2019 Triathlon Round 1 entries!

Aug 1, 2019

    1. Welcome to the first stage of voting for the 2019 Triathlon!

Please take a moment to look through all of the amazing entries below. In this first of three stages, contestants were challenged to create a wig that conveys the most important aspects of their doll's personality.

When you have finished checking out the entries, please vote! Voting is open to all members, including contestants!

Voters have three points to distribute to three different entries based on the following criteria:

      1. Craftsmanship and attention to detail
      2. Creative use of materials
      3. Aesthetic appeal
Each entry can only receive one point from each voter, so please choose a different entry for each criterion. If you vote for the same entry multiple times, all of your votes for that entry will be thrown out. Contestants are allowed to vote for themselves.

Voting period: Tuesday, August 13th 17 pm until Saturday, August 17th 11:59 pm EDT

      Voting
The voting period has ended, thank you for voting! :)

Entry # is post number (there is no entry #1, you can find the post number at the bottom right side of the post)

After you finish voting, take some time and check out the "Just for fun" entries here!

    5. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
Anime girl! The "wig" is made entirely from some old fabric I had lying around. I made a stretchy wig cap and attached everything from there. I cut the sections of hair and painted the outline and few strokes for simple detail, much like the style of anime girls, who have hair always flowing in sections, defying the laws of gravity and the way the wind blows. The few pieces I wanted to "float" have very thin jewelry wire glued to the underside so they can be bent in any way for any angle. Of course, she wouldn't be a proper anime girl without being a cat girl, so I created the ears from a stiff fabric. Ribbons, a tiny blueberry and peppermint and jewels were added last for decorations.

    8. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
This lady is quite uptight in her day to day, always trying to stay contained and disciplined. Yet she has a mischievous streak that sometimes shines and sparkles out for the world to see. 10. Briefly describe your entry's concept: She is quiet and delicate; she likes books and watercolors and people-watching at cozy cafes. Her new wig reflects these qualities in the soft color pallet of dove grey and ballet slipper pink, braided in a romantic updo and finished with dainty pearl embellishment.

    11. Briefly describe your entry's concept:

To step out in to the world a woman styles her hair and dons her clothes, she is so guarded everything she wears becomes her protection and gives her strength. This wig is made from the remnants of an old project that explored how clothes become our armor. It takes inspiration from reality, knights helmets and short hairstyles such as pixie cuts, as well as fiction, from the elaborate hair styles of manga and anime specifically Black Clover.

Keeping her mouth hidden behind a fan or sleeve until she finds a suitable victim.

The look for this wig was inspired by scale mail, which I recreated the appearance of with paper and metallic paint. My doll's character is based on a character from one of my stories, in which she is The Silver Goddess- hence the silver paint. She also has the nickname of The Silver Dragon, inspiring the scale mail idea.

    29. Briefly describe your entry's concept:

She loves the sun and sunbathing. Gold is her favourite colour. She likes to dance in the sunshine the most. So I decide to make a wig woven from sunrays for her.
I made the wig from glitter foil (lamette) which I had in a box of Christmas decorations. i glued it to paper tape and then to wig cap. The wig cap is made of several layers of gauze.

    33. Briefly describe your entry's concept: I wanted to go for something futuristic, ethereal, and playful. The character is a demon so I wanted to include "buns" that were shaped a bit like horns, and I decided to put them in the location I would normally put her magnetic horns. I also wanted to keep the wig lightweight.

    34. Briefly describe your entry's concept: This particular doll has an otherworldly, morose disposition, marred by lurking tragedy, very similar to Shakespeare's Ophelia. For this Triathlon event, I was heavily inspired by John Everett Millais' portrayal of Ophelia. The reindeer moss primarily serves as the wig "hair," and a miniature scene sits at the top of the wig depicting her eventual demise where Ophelia, who is hanging her garlands from the trees, falls into the river. (Traces of the garlands can be seen on top of the river surface.)

Doll company & head sculpt: Head is DIM doll Laia (half-open eyes); body is Doll Chateau k-18.

    35. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
The character is a performer, one of those multitalented cirque du soleil style gymnast/acrobat/clown theatrical whizzkids that does spectacular death defying acts on stage, whilst making it look comical!

Her hair reflects both her practicality, and dramatic bent - she's got a slightly grown out undercut hairstyle. The longer hair on top is now long enough that she ties it up in a loose ponytail to keep it out of her face when performing.

In keeping with the over the top stage make-up required for her performances, the hair, and doll's style is deliberately cartoony! Her larger than life style reflects her larger than life performances on stage.

The wig was made using my copious craft foam offcuts from other projects. (Finally, finally, my small hoarde of too bitty to be useful scraps of foam found a purpose! Mwahahaha!!!) I made a hardcap style cap out of pieces of dead bedsheet/wood glue, and cut out many (so so many...) pieces of craft foam and glued them down, before coating the whole thing in wood glue, and painting it up in acrylics.

    39. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
I wanted to show the joyfulness, peacefulness, spirituality with my work. This is why I used sleeping Roron (has partially removed face up) for this year Triathlon.

I took inspiration from few different things. Firstly, devil horns = broken angel halo. Secondly, the color scheme was borrowed from rhinestones I have used, which were called Light of the Heaven. My angels halo started to corrode a little bit, but she still is innocent ball of joy.

    41. Briefly describe your entry's concept: My doll is the embodiment of everything I find the most fascinating and fulfilling about the whole process of creating a doll: starting with the concept and then building up to the smallest details. I picked rococo as the starting point, as the wig silhouette allowed for creativity, detailing, richness and a little over-the-top stylistic choices, characteristic both for that fashion era and for what I love the most about everything doll-related. The centerpiece of the wig is a teacup filled to the brim with little trinkets, since in my world dolls spend their afternoons trying on dresses, looking at laces and having endless teaparties with purring kittens in their laps.
I used my favourite crafting materials: tulle and lace, from which I made the base (with a plastic heart-shaped ornament for shape), braided the locks and buns, and decorated it all with pearls, crystals and ribbons with a pink feather on top. Because your hair is never big enough.

    44. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
My doll is a cheerful person that loves celebrations. The colorful ribbons, generally used for party balloons, reflect that, with the white streak representing her pure intentions. And the sequins on the "shaved" side represent the fierce warrior she fantasizes about being, looking almost like armor.

    46. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
This is my girl, my favorite one, the one that always gets picked when I feel like making doll stuff. She's very gothy, witchy, and vampy, so I wanted her wig to reflect that. I pulled some inspiration from Bayonetta for the design, because I love high ponytails with a bunch of stuff hanging off of it.

    47. Briefly describe your entry's concept: The geisha hairstyle is complex and structural, so steel wool has the ability to provide the structure while remaining relatively light weight, especially on a small doll. Care has to be taken to avoid scratching the doll, but fairly fine steel wool makes it less likely. To stay with the metal concept hair ornaments are mostly metal and hard materials.

    48. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
While delicate and fragile on the outside, this doll is tougher than she looks. A spiky look on the top with longer tresses to play with on the sides and back, all made from metal, separated with a headband with just a little decoration is what really makes her personality shine through. All of the metal used is the opener parts of beverage cans, staying on the head on a wigcap made from air-hardening modeling clay.

    55. Briefly describe your entry's concept: My doll is a true lady, who loves the balls, high society, pretty things and art. She is well-mannered, proud, sophisticated, but also vain, arrogant and offten her behave is exaggerated. She likes to stand out of the crowd and her taste might seems to be a bit eccentric. So that I have created a pompous wig in baroque style with many decorative elements, which is a reflection of her soul.

    56. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
From the steamworks, to the airship, to afternoon tea - a modern girl is constantly on the go. You always want to be stereopticon ready, but you don't have time to waste in front of the looking glass. What's a girl to do? Build yourself a modular hairpiece that will allow your hair to switch gears (so to speak) in a snap.

In its current configuration, there's a braid mounted on the track that can be slid to the top and secured for a sassy look that will stay out of your way when tinkering with gadgets in your workshop and won't interfere with your goggles or mask. When hobnobbing in high society, slide the braid to the bottom of the track for a more polished look that will still leave plenty of room for your tiny top hat.

Base is a Worbla headcap with a dramatic copper "hair" swoosh, created from epoxied copper wire parts from an old TV set and an undercut of silver tone "braided hair" from a woven cable cover. The track for the modular braid was cut from an old computer server rack with a piece of square brass tubing bent to shape. The carrier for the braid was cut from an old copper computer heat sink and a piece of copper sheeting. Decorative braids were woven from stripped speaker wire.

    57. Briefly describe your entry's concept: The god of space and empty spaces. A vast and unknowable being, but a benevolent one.

    58. Briefly describe your entry's concept:
A spider lady would of course have a wonderful webby hairdo. Made from Halloween webs I got on clearance, this do sticks out as much as it sticks to everything else!
