Doll Leaves Mini [45 cm] Discussion part 4

Jan 9, 2022

    1. Hi guys, I just have a quick question. How well do very tight minifee clothes fit on the teenage dream body? I mean things like a leather pair of pants or skin tight top that won't have a lot of give, but just a little.

    2. the teen bodies are pretty skinny.... I don't have a minifee or anything that I know was specifically made FOR minifee but I do have a lot of "slim mini" clothes which are often listed as "minifee sized" which fit well.
But I can't confirm if specific things would fit.

    3. I don't have a minifee either, but almost all of my regular MSD clothes from acbjd are too big for my DL MSD

    4. For tops and some dresses, "slim mini" works great. For pants and tight skirts--no. Ask me how I know.

    5. Has anyone here ordered the Rabbit?
I really liked her, and Leilia, I'm unsure between her two versions. Does anyone have photos of both versions of Leilia? I would really appreciate it! :)

    6. I would like to share with you my always sad girl - Salem (Doll Leaves Wish) :)

I need to find other eyes for her, these one are too dull for my taste ^^'

    7. @Caramello_Cat Oh, she is pretty. I don't often see Wish as a girl, but I think it really works!

      • x 1
    8. I LOVE the iridescent green you used in her tears. Can you tell me how you kept it shiny? Was it added after spraying?

      • x 1
    9. Thank you <3 I wasn't sure if this facemold could work as a girl but with this faceup I think it finally worked ^^

Thank you, that's my favorite part too! Yes, I add them after I finish makeup and spray it with mr. super clear. I mix these iridescent flakes with a little bit of the gloss I use for doll lips and just paint with such a thick mixture. Or sometimes I paint a clear coat on the eyelids and then apply the dry flakes. It depends on the specific flakes I use and how small the detail needs to be. But the finish is always the same, I just add another layer of translucent gloss on the iridescent area to protect it well. In the case of these tears, I might have used a semi-gloss finish if I remember correctly :)

I hope this is the right thread to post on, I'm still new to actively using DoA.
One of my favorite ways to play with my dolls is to redress them, and find which random pieces in my vast clothing collection can fit unexpected dolls. (She's a doll leaves Ida, and yes she has hands I just didn't feel like putting them back on after stabbing myself with the s-hook.) I made the leggings, and the top has been languishing for ages looking for a home.

    11. @PoppyVengeance It's a very good thread to post in, we all love to see what you do with your doll! But be aware that it's one picture per post here in the discussions threads, as the focus is meant to be on the discussion.
If you want to show off stuff you've made, the workshop is a great place. You can start your own thread for a project, of you can post in one of the more general crafting threads. Look around for the proper one.
If you just want to show of "pretty pictures" in general, the gallery is a good place.

Drusilla looks great in her outfits!

    12. Oh okay, sorry about that. I'll delete the extra photos. Thanks for the info!

    13. I didn't know that the Doll Leaves girls could wear some of the Barbie or Rainbow High clothes! (If I identified the clothes correctly) The dress you've made was super cute, your Drusilla looks great.

    14. Yes, this top is barbie! (Barbie x Jurassic World, if I'm remembering correctly). And she can wear some of the RH boy tops, if you don't mind (sometimes extreme) crop tops :)

    15. Did you guys see the news? They're discontinuing all their dolls :o (and will be releasing some new ones soon)

I'm surprised it's all of them honestly, I'd understand discontinuing few oldest ones that just aren't selling well anymore or the molds are getting weary but literally all of them? That's surprising and not in the positive way.

I wasn't planning on new dolls this year, just bodies for my heads but I guess I'll have to go through theirs to see if there's still someone I absolutely want and don't want to gamble getting in second have market. :pout: but I'm of course also curious to see the new dolls and what art direction they take with them since I feel Doll Leaves has some most interesting face sculpts out there. Are they going to continue that or go in the more generic pretty direction from here on? It'll be interesting to see regardless of the answer.

    16. ALL of them!??? I'm stunned. WHY? why Doll Leaves! WHYY!???

I kinda want Lan so I may have to bite the bullet and order her.

They have some interesting older heads, some are really not my cup of tea but a few of them I find quite interesting. Nina, Hily, Matthew I think would all make nice dolls.
Thankfully I have most of the heads I already wanted from Doll leaves, Lan is the only one on my "yes for sure" wishlist so ngh.

Doesn't look like they're offering anything other than normal and white resin which is a pity because i'd really like something a little more interesting.

    17. I have a teenage dream girl, and while minifee shirts will fit just fine, from the waist down they're too curvy for even MSD pants. Girl's got a huge badonkadonk.

      • x 2
    18. Whoa, that's a bit sudden. There are so many classics among them. But, I guess they know what they are doing. I do look forward to see what they create in the future.

      • x 2
    19. Do you know if stretchy pants work ok? The hips sizes are almost the same. Minifee at 19cm and DL at 19.5 cm. I wonder if the waist sizes figure in though because minifee is 11cm and DL 13cm. I do see the shape difference though. DL is very pear shaped whereas minifee is an hourglass.

As for the discontinuations I'm wondering what they'll be introducing. I did not want to buy any dolls this year, however, they are such a good quality and affordable body for slim mini heads I'd like to grab one before they're gone forever.
For a "cheaper"(nothing in this hobby is cheap XD) brand, they are really well proportioned and have a nice weight and feel to the resin. Such a shame to think they'd be getting rid of the teenage dream 1/4 body. :( I'm hoping maybe they'll keep them and just update the joints or something like that. It's a shame about the head sculpts too, many of them are very cute.

    20. The discontinuation of all their molds left me off base. I feel like it was just yesterday that they released Rabbit and Camilla, which I found totally adorable. Before I started this hobby one of my first alternatives was to get a doll from DL because they were "cheap" (note the quotes) and I wanted to see if I liked the hobby enough but I got headlong into a layaway with expensive 1/3 dolls and let that go lol

I thought that at some point I would lower my head and buy one of the sculpts that I like, like Augus' head, because I was not a fan of the male bodies of Doll Leaves, but I did like the girls. Leilia's face, and the new ones at that time, Camilla, that I didn't know if I would like the "new" color, porcelain, because I didn't want her to turn yellow. I liked Rabitt when they uploaded some pictures of her dressed as Sakura Card Captor, then I was quite tempted to have her, but suddenly they removed the faceup option which was a deal-breaker for me (Because I still don't know how to paint them). Another downside is that DL is not going to put the option for faceup for their new sculpts, which suks for me if I end up liking one of the new ones.

Now with this discontinuation, I don't dare to make impulsive purchases, since I promised myself that if I bought a doll this year it would be a complete one and only one. I have too many floating heads, If I end up getting one from DL I'm going to regret it, I know I will...

      • x 2
    21. I definitely had to double take at the news. I'm glad it's a cleaning house rather than a closing, at least- and I understand studios sometimes need to refresh their body of work, and I am definitely excited to see what they plan to do next (with hopes that they keep their unique style!), but I am definitely distressed that their ENTIRE catalog is going. :sweat Giving 2 1/2 months notice is better than some companies, but still...!!!

I've been wanting Lan for a long, long time, so I'm probably going to get her head and store it until I'm ready to tackle that project. I hummed and hawed about a few other sculpts, but I managed to narrow it down to just her. I don't have too many floating eggs so I'll allow it. I've been pumping the breaks on MSDs, but I just can't let her slip away! Discontinuations are always the worst. :sorry

      • x 2

    22. Yeah, Color me shocked! I saw their Instagram post. I'm a bit glum about it because many of their slim MSD style sculpts are really uniquely suited to be mature minis, but glad the 1/4 sculpts are still available into the month of March. I have a couple artist heads on order and one is specifically tested to work with the DollLeaves boy body. I'm thinking of buying a few heads and the 1/4 size newer boy body.

I'm also thinking of making some kind of altered shadow box to store and display my floating heads in. :evilplot:

Good luck and safe shipping to everyone making and order!

      • x 1
    23. I'm thinking Hily in grey and a Lan, I hadn't intended to buy any bjds for a while this year but they force my hand and I KNOW i'll regret it if I don't do it. But eugh. So stressful.

They fixed Lan's sculpt so she no longer has really wonky eyes right?
I still see some sometimes with that really badly squinted eye.

I'm pondering whether to get Lan as a full doll or just a head for now, but I am starting to get too many floating heads which I find stressful too.

      • x 2
    24. I'm so sad to see them discontinuing all their sculpts! D: They're one of my favorite companies~ I'm gonna miss the older style bodies. I might pick up Lan and that one newer myth girl they showed with red hair on insta. Tempted to grab a bunch of heads too xD;;

Anyways, here is my Rabbit I got last year that I named Penelope Anne.

    25. Releasing new ones? Great, now I don't know whether to go with ordering Betty or wait for their new dolls. :/

      • x 2
    26. Do you think the new stuff will lean more toward their "mythic" style? That's the feeling I get but at the same time, if that is so, why discontinue all them too?
      Very odd.

I'm still umming and ahhing over whether to order anything before the discontinuation. It's untangling how much is FOMO and how much I genuinely have a plan for. And that's rough.

    27. Yeah I wish they showed some sneak peek of what's coming so we'd know what to expect.

      • x 2
    28. Well I emailed them direct to ask them about Hily 2.0 because she's the only doll NOT discounted on ACBJD and they never replied when I asked about the grey resin previously.
      we'll see if they respond.

    29. They can run their business in any way they like, of course and they don't owe us any explanations, but I can not help but to speculate.
New equipment that required a complete overhaul of their molds or casting process? A change to a different resin or some other change in supplies that required molds to be remade in a different type of silicone? Or some sort of dispute over the rights to their sculpts? Who knows?

At the end of the day, we can wonder but we'll probably never know. And it's all the same in the end, we'll just have to wait and see.
I hope that there is nothing serious going on and that new sculpts will start coming out eventually.

If I were to make a wish it would be that they focus on well posing bodies again. I have an old Wish on the shorter male body and he is the best poser in my collection. This (along with the fact that they were quite affordable) made them very popular for hybrids. But I know that some of the newer bodies, especially the novelty ones, have not lived up to that legacy. I hope that Doll Leaves don't loose that place in the market.

      • x 5
    30. It could be as simple as a new artist. Sometimes there's some odd legal grey areas with the rights so if their previous artist left, they may have had to discontinue their work due to contract or something. That was the theory why DC discontinued several of their quite new sculpts, they got a new artist and the old one left.
but who knows what the contracts and rights agreements actually look like.

I do hope they remain affordable because it's one of their big selling points. Yes, it comes at the cost of having very limited resin colour options, but it works for them.
As for posing, i've got the new and old boy bodies and haven't noticed much difference, they both pose fine. The standard girl body is excellent at posing, better than several of my much more expensive dolls honestly. And I do like that they have the options for different body shapes and heights. Where will we get our little shortass boy doll bodies now? lol.
      they're SO SHORT.

I'm umming and ahhing over what I want to do here. Do I get full dolls or just heads and hope that there's compatable bodies in the future? Do I want/need more floating heads?
The thing is, several of their sculpts tick my boxes for aesthetic. Big pouty lips, longer noses, sulkiness.
I do love me a sulky doll.

And I admit their newer mythic series does nothing for me in terms of the face sculpts. Too generically "cute" and young looking for me. The body is nice though. What do the teenage dream heads look like on that body? It's a touch smaller but i'm very very curious if they're actually compatable.

      • x 3
    31. I don't have any of their older heads, just Leilia and the Myth body but I can plop quite few heads I have on the body and take pictures if you want? I should have about all the dolls I have listed on my profile. Color matches will be completely off though and my Leilia currently has the deer legs installed.

      • x 2
    32. Ohh she's so gorgeous! I have Rabbit on layaway, and you're only like the second owner photo I've been able to find anywhere! I have Augus on layaway, too. The price point, aesthetics, and FOMO was too much to resist haha. If they had darker resin colors, I'd have ordered a third!
Does anybody happen to have a MSD Myou Doll boy to compare to a Doll Leaves boy? I know the height is different but I'm hoping the proportions look reasonable next to each other.

      • x 1
    33. I preordered Camilla, but she's so pretty I am tempted to preorder her as well!

EDIT: I compromised, and ordered her head in Normal and clothes, Rabbit's blouse is such a lovely piece of clothing, I could not resist

    34. aww thank you. I actually managed to find an image from someone which was helpful.

      In other news,

I bit the bullet and ordered Hily 2.0 and then Fei and Lan just as heads. I did consider full dolls but i'm trying to keep my budget down so they'll be fine as heads until I can be bothered investing in bodies for them.

    35. [IMG]

I impulse bid on a bundle of random doll bits including a Doll Leaves Amara and a Vivian head. The head is a lot newer than the body but I prefer Vivian to Amara so she's the one who got to claim it despite the colour difference.
I was considering getting this head during the discontinuation anyway but talked myself out of it, so I think she was meant to come to me. It's a strange sculpt but I really enjoy quite odd sculpts and she looks beautiful with a face.
her wig was in the bundle but it's so over long that it always looks messy.

I love her little buck teeth but they're not easy to get a photo of.

      • x 3
    36. I'm with you. I don't care for Amara either, I never considered Vivian, but I like what you did with her. Just for fun I tried one of the boy heads on a girl body (Angelou and Dreambody) and love how it came out.

    37. Got some surprise money, so decided to grab an Ida from DDE. I had wanted to get her before, but timing was never right, and the stars aligned this time. Very excited to see her sometime next week.

      • x 2
    38. Did someone of you ever notice an uneven yellowing on the body? Today I took out my Louis (that was always kept in the dark inside a closet, no direct light ever and he didn't have clothes so no staining) and I noticed the front of the torso has yellowed! The back is totally fine thought, the head too.
Pretty weird but I guess it's the resin that had issues (but only on the front of the torso :ablink:)

    39. I just pulled my Hily out of storage and haven’t noticed any yellowing FWIW. Was there a heat source or something nearby?

      • x 1
    40. No, it's inside a wooden cabinet and doesn't touch anything either, it usually sits on the lap of other dolls or sits over the white quilt they shipped him with. There's no heat source and all the other dolls are fine and have no issues.
I'll try to clean it with a magic sponge and see if it goes away, but I noticed that's very yellow compared to the head (that's still with the pink undertone).
Maybe it's really some issue with the resin itself, a faulty batch? Who knows!

    41. @Rurimas Hard to say what may have caused it.
If the part that got yellowed was more exposed than the rest of the doll (if the doll was lying on it's back, partly covered, or if the rest was blushed or something like that) it's likely it was something in the air that sped up the oxidization. You say it was a wooden cabinet, most woods are acidic, so in an enclosed space over time that could be the cause. In theory, at least.
      But who knows?
Without knowing the casting process and equipment, it's impossible to say if the chest part could have been cast under different circumstances than the rest of the doll. It is true that curing conditions can have an effect of how quickly the plastic oxidizes, so can any pigments and other additives. It is possible that the chest part was cast with a slightly different mix for some reason. But since the whole piece is not affected, faulty resin does not sound like likely cause.

In any case, it's likely just surface oxidization and can probably be buffed out with a melamine sponge.

      • x 1
    42. Probably it's really something with the chest piece, cause the rest of the doll is totally unaffected! I checked the arms and you can clearly see they're a different hue.
It's not super jarring actually, but if you look close/with the right light it's pretty noticeable.
I'll try to give him a melanine sponge rub and I'll see if it goes away. At least this discovery made me finally decide to sew him some clothes :XD:

    43. Hello! I've been contemplating buying a deer body Leilia since DDE has an in-stock one with a bit of a sale right now, but I'm iffy because I'm not 100% sure on her face sculpt. Does anyone have a Leilia who wouldn't mind showing some pictures?

    44. Mine is in storage, but here's a photo. I painted her faceup myself, though, and I'm...not exactly professional-level.

      • x 4
    45. Thanks for the photo! And don't worry, it's more helpful for me to see without a "pro" faceup anyway since it's a blank that's on sale :)

    46. I've been doing some hybrid tests with my Lan head. The DL Dream body has a 6.5cm neck by default.

      • Top left: DFH 1/4 Boy Body Ver.5 (Shao Xia), tan- neck is 7cm. Surprised this had mobility, nevermind went on at all. This fills the neck cavity fully, but it's VERY limited mobility.
      • Top right: Charmdoll 42cm Girl Body Ver.II (CDB-G42-02), yellow- 6.7cm. This neck was thicker than I expected for being such a slender body. Also surprisingly, this one had a little bulging at the top.
      • Bottom left: Doll Chateau K-body-01 43cm, green. 6cm neck. So, this one has the best mobility hands down. However, there is a fair amount of gapping around the neck hole, which might bother some. I don't personally think it looks too thin or bobble headed from the front.
      • Bottom right: Soul Kids New Girl Body, dyed pink. 6.5cm. It works well enough, but it's a bit more snug than I expected for being the original neck size.
      • Unpictured: I tried her on my LUTS KDF v6 Lovely body with a 6.6cm neck, and it fits and moves ok. A bit restricted.
      • Consensus: 6cm is the best for mobility. anything between 6 and 6.5 should work well. Anything beyond that is a little YMMV.
All that being said... has anyone had success hybriding Doll Leaves heads onto the v3 Myoudoll body? It's the only one with a 6.8cm neck. I want the lanky body so bad, but I don't really want to sand it down because I wanted to get it in tan... but I'm worrying she'll have very limited movement. I am considering sanding the inside of the neck hole instead, but I'm still considering my options. If anyone happens to have this body and a DL head, I'd love to see!! :eusa_pray

      • x 3
    47. I have a myou body but I think it might be V4, I can't remember. It's quite pear shaped. it's also tan so at least it would show the colour?
I can dig that out and take some photos if you like.

I haven't even started thinking about bodies for my floating heads.

Does your Lan have the really obvious eye squint on one side? I was surprised when mine arrived because I thought they'd fixed that but nope, mine is really asymmetrical and I had to take a sanding tool to one eye to get it a little more even. I'm hoping that with makeup you won't even notice at all. But quite disappointing.

I'm also really wondering when/if Doll Leaves are going to come back with their new direction. I worry about them.

      • x 1
    48. I worry about them too; I hope that they don't end up like Dream of Doll. A Doll Leaves Dulcia was/is my very first BJD. I bought her around this time last year. Every now and then I'll check the website for updates. Thankfully the site is still up...

    49. Actually, it seems that they are back and offer only their Mysterious series now, and I saw a limited Leila on Alice's Collections yesterday!

      • x 3
    50. If it's not any inconvenience I would love to see it regardless!! The tan and general proportions might help me take the chance anyway. :eusa_pray I'm trying not to jump the gun with bodying my floaters, but I can't help myself but think about it with every secondhand body I see...

My Lan indeed does have the asymmetrical eyes, I don't believe they ever corrected it before discontinuing the sculpt. I have a personal fondness for it myself so I had purchased it with that in mind, though. I hope the sanding yielded satisfying results for you!!

      • x 1
    51. I'll dig her out later on then, if I can rememebr where I put her lol.

Yeah I did some sanding and they're even enough I think that a faceup will hide the rest of the wonk. I hope anyway. It'll be a while before I have a body for her anyway so right now she's just chilling in a box.

    52. Yes, the difference in her eyes was more than I could stand, I carved out the smaller eye a bit. They still don't match, but it's close enough that you don't notice it.
