Does anyone else collect other dolls?

Apr 17, 2016

    1. I've collected dolls all my life
Mostly the 12" Star Wars ones as a kid (yeah I had Barbie's too but the SW dolls were the main characters)
I got back into 12" SW again when the prequels came out. I also have many of the Sideshow Limited Edition ones as well.
World Doll Gone With The Wind dolls and a couple of the Barbie GWTW as well
      LOTR Dolls
      A Variety DC Comics Dolls
      Tonner Edward Cullen & Batgirl
And I have every one of the Disney Animator's Dolls (large size ones).

Nothing has ever spoken to me--captured my heart & imagination like BJD's have. I love these little things.

    2. Love this thread!!! I Have been doll Crazy my whole Life (40+ years) and I still Have some of my childhood dolls. My craftroom is loaded with All kinds of dolls: my Collection of 5 Resinsoul BJD's; Barbies and other Fashion dolls from '60 - 2016; a few Monster High dolls; and lots of cheap vinyl dolls in All sizes. I like to paint my dolls and to sew, crochet or knit their clothes, craft their wigs, shoes and so on.

    3. Integrity Toys Jem and FR dolls, some Pullips, but mostly Tonner's 16 fashion dolls ( they out number my BJD's) I love my dolls!

    4. I collect monster high dolls, some Barbies, and pop figures. Can we took about how ghoulia just disappeared after this reboot even though we were told she wasn't going anywhere? Smh

    5. Yah, can't say I'm a fan of her getting replaced by Moanica. I'm also convinces Spectra has been replaced with Ari, which I'm bitter about since Spectra is my fave. :/

    6. Exactly

    7. She totally is! Mattel is just making some terrible decisions right now

    8. My friend and I collect them. I don't mind the new line now (hated them at first), but the fact that they're booting core characters and releasing more "budget" dolls with little to no jointing (for normal jointed doll prices) is really not making me a happy camper. XP

    9. I collect prize figures when I can find ones that I like, I have a set from Yurikuma Arashi and some keychain figures from Otome Yōkai Zakuro. The only Monster High doll I bought was the alien girl that was supposed to hover and flash to music, but she's very complicated to use and takes waaaay too many batteries. I used to collect the Novi Star dolls but they stopped carrying them around here and I don't have the space (pun) to be ordering a bunch online. x(

    10. I have a lot of Monster High and Barbies. When I was two some (personally I think stupid) parent donated a porcelain doll for secret santa. While my peers opened up like fisher price toys and things that weren't so fragile, I got this giant porcelain doll. Her name was Elizabeth. I started collecting them until I was 7 but they freaked out my family so I was forced to get rid of them.

    11. A big white bear. My parent have a picture off me holding it my first Christmas. But it started tearing and eventually was thrown away.

    12. I collect Monster High and some of the old G1 ponies. I also have a little Alice in Wonderland diorama beside my couch, so for that I have a Madeline Hatter from Ever After High and Brat version of Alice in Wonderland. I don't collect those otherwise.

My first doll was a cabbage patch kid :D Then some girl ripped it's head off the day I got it (at my birthday party) and my Mum had to zip-tie it's head on. Hilarious now...but it was the end of the world then! lol

    13. My first doll was a beautiful Madame Alexander "Elise" Ballerina circa 1974...She was gorgeous. Little pink satin shoes, perfect little crystal-encrusted tutu, silk roses in her perfect blonde curls....being a kid, i played with her (duh)...she was hopelessly trashed, and I don't know where she wound up....but I wish I had her back now.

I have a RS Dai, a Yun...and a sweet little Doll Leaves Mint. I very much play with them, too....albeit a bit more carefully.

    14. I started with Himstedts and Gunzels, big kids that could wear real kids clothing. Then sold them and did some other stuff, Horses both Model and real. Then when I got back into dolls I went into silicone babies and reborns. Then about 10 years ago found BJKD and haven't looked back since, have had over 500 in my collection,; not all at once, LOL over these 9 years, as well as tried Smart Dolls. Only doll outside BJD here is a reborn baby I got for a birthday gift and saving for granddaughter when she is old enough.

    15. I had over 75 Barbie and other fashion dolls as a kid. I've kept about 15, including an MC Hammer, Blossom, Brenda from 90210, and Donnie & Jordan from NKOTB dolls. I was never really into "baby" dolls and I tried to drown my "Premie" Cabbage Patch Kid in the toilet. When I was a little older, around 10, I started collecting porcelain bride dolls. I don't have those any more.

Outside of my old Barbies (and a couple newer ones), I also have a few Monster Highs and older Sailor Moon dolls.

    16. I have two Jun Planning Ai dolls, a few Pullips...and lots of custom nendoroids. My first was a porcelain doll, which somehow snowballed into a bunch because my family thought I liked them. I actually didn't, heh.

But I fell inlove with BJDs...it's probably the customisation aspect of them however - I really love my OCs.

    17. I started with Monster and Everafter high doll. I moved onto Pullips and I do have an AI doll plus a few other fashion type dolls and a Blythe. I am in the process of saving up for my first BJD and I am so excited! I am a customizer so I love working on as many kinds of dolls that I can!

    18. When i was younger i had Barbie dolls, didn't find out about bjds until college. but it was volks dolls and though i wanted them they were out of my price range. in 2012 i found out about obitsu's and volks dollfies (the 1/6th scale ones) so i got 2 27 cm obitsu's first than a Jun Ai doll, than 2 mirodolls and this year my Loongsoul siren lotus. my wish list continues to grow as i find more dolls that i love.

    19. I had Barbies as a kid. A lot of them :D

    20. I had Bratz and barbie dolls as a kid and anime figures/dolls.
Then moved onto BJDs after...still have my old dolls though, just dont do anything with them anymore haha xD:3nodding:

    21. I have a Make It Own Isul (Pullip's little brother) doll who's currently waiting very patiently to be customized. He'll have to wait for quite a while longer because I chose to spoil my recently-ordered 48 cm Obitsu girl instead of working on him. Not gonna lie, I feel kind of bad for neglecting him. But I've been planning on my Obitsu girl for weeks if not months, while my MIO Isul was an impulse buy. So... yeah.

    22. I have a bunch of Monster High dolls (AY CLAWDEEN!!!), a Life in the Dreamhouse Raquelle with a Made to Move body (I love her expression and love dolls that are highly poseable SO...) and a couple Pullips on Obitsu bodies so far :)
Would like to have a couple Bratzillas tho, they have a cute look!

    23. I know this was posted months ago, but I really wanted to ask about how you go about properly dying Pullips type dolls, and what types of dyes do you use? Most places I've seen info on this, it suggested it wasn't a possibility. I'd love to know, because I've wanted to do this for a while!:love

Over the years I've had a few different doll brands come and go (the original Bratz dolls, early released Winx Club dolls) and had some as a kid (the usual Barbie/Skipper/Stacy/Ken/Kelly dolls, as well as a set of Babysitters club dolls, a couple Jem and the Holograms, and odds and ends). Some I still have in storage, but most disappeared during my many moves. I also have a hoard of G1 my little ponies that I used to collect a while back, and a lot of stuffed cat plushies.

As for what I currently still collect doll-wise outside of bjds: I'm still semi-active with Pullip & co. I've got around 20 of them, and I have most of them customized, save for two, and they've been hybridized either onto Obitsu, Volks 1/6, or Azone bodies, with the exception of most of my Taeyangs. I also snagged one of those Hot Toys bodies off of eBay that I plan to eventually hybridize with a custom Pullip I'm working on once I get around to finishing her.

I love the fact that Groove released those MIO kits, as it made my lust for customizing Pullip even stronger afterwards. Even so, I'm more actively collecting bjds these days:D.

    24. @jade-eyed-cat
My Pullip dyeing project was a bit of an adventure--I used a Pullip Isul MIO head (a different kind of ABS plastic than Hujoo--?) and a Hujoo Io body (ABS plastic and vinyl) to make a Big Pullip.

The Hujoo Io body took very well to the iDye Poly dye that I used, but the Pullip head, although it took up the dye well, began to deform/melt in the dye pot!

It turned out that the only part which deformed before I noticed was the top of the head, so that didn't matter because I had wanted to mod the new Pullip/Isul 2-part head to the old Pullip 3-part head (adding separate scalp part), which I did with milliput, along with modding the Pullip Isul to have a faceplate system much like Fairyland.

As a result, though, I have concluded that it would be very difficult to dye Pullip plastic successfully. Here is why:

Synthetic plastics (like BJD resin and Pullip plastic) require special dye in order for coloring to be even and permanent.

Permanence of a dye results from the formation of chemical bonds (covalent and coordinate covalent) or how well the dye integrates into the substance (matters for disperse dyes). The only dye which can even begin to associate with plastics (synthetics) is a disperse dye (like iDye Poly or Rit Dyemore). These molecules are too nonpolar to dissolve in water without the help of a "carrier."

The reason these dyes have become more popular recently is that chemists have only recently been able to tweak the chemicals in a dyebath enough that this will work at lower temperatures (just below boiling), making the dye safe and feasible for at home use.

I recently accidentally showed that the dye only works at temperatures closer to boiling: I erroneously commented that I was able to remove the dye from the resin of my "Prometheus" with 90% isopropyl alcohol.

What in fact had occurred was that I had let the dye pot cool too much, resulting in disperse dye caking on the resin surface: I believe that the dye didn't actually integrate into the resin, so a paper towel only removed a bit of dye, but the alcohol could remove more of it. The dye at this lower temperature is incredibly uneven.

*As a result, the dyebath must be hot to allow for the dye to form a bond with the plastic, but this is too hot for Pullip plastic, and it deforms/begins to melt.

But, there may still be hope: Pullip heads can be easily airbrushed, as there are no moving parts.

If the Pullip is a hybrid (different body with higher quality plastic: perhaps Pureneemo or Obitsu would work, but I haven't tested them), these bodies may take to the dye without deforming.

Furthermore, Pullips have changed dramatically since their creation.

My Pullip Isul head deformed because enough head surface contacted the hot water to melt the plastic throughout the head, and it began to melt.

Older three-part Pullip heads (around the time of Pullip Nero) are made with much thicker plastic. If these heads are dyed, the surface plastic may melt, but it doesn't matter because the deep plastic may take longer to get to dyebath temperature and form a supportive skeleton which prevents deformation (like a potato in the oven--the center takes longer to get warm).

To illustrate how thin new Pullip plastic is: I could easily cut the Pullip Isul head with airplane shears (made for cutting sheet metal). This would be impossible with Pullip Nero's head (I have one).

    25. I started out collecting Bratz and Barbie dolls when I was younger and then I moved to American Girl dolls when I was older :)

    26. I have a fairly big collection of anime figurines (about 90 or so) but I'm looking to get into collecting some Azone Pureneemo dolls. They're so cute, but I'm worried because I barely have any display room left as it is... ;_;

    27. I really like mature 1/6 scale off-topic bjds, particularly with Azone bodies!! I also have a bunch of old (1st to 3rd generation) my little ponies, do they count as dolls?

    28. I also have some designer and Silkstone Barbies, Fashion Royalty, Poppy Parker and a few very glamorous Sybarites.

    29. My collection of dolls started really with vintage Flocked Ken's then progressed to Robert Tonner to FR Hommes, now to BJD guys. I've collected/purchased other boys from Bratz, Monster High, even Barbie herself but now I've scaled way back & will continue to sell off what I no longer want to have now to focus on my 1/3rd boys.

    30. I collect 1/6 scale figures. I have some hottoys, and some custom heads on phicen seamless bodies. My mum keeps pinching the phi end, though, because they're so rubbery! I also like plushies. I have a taeyang make it own as well.

    31. I collect monster high dolls, and several figmas and nendoroids! ^o^
Also the proud owner of a Kaneki Ken Funko Pop! XD

    32. I've been slowly collecting all the types of MH Draculaura dolls for a few years now. Only have 6 so far, and am waaay behind on all the new ones that have come out due to lack of $$, but I'm making a list of all of them to keep track heh

    33. I actually collect Ever After High dolls even if the quality is not as good as it was. I stopped at the moment, mainly for lack of space and because I wanna save for my BJD, but I really enjoy the great care of details that went into EAH.
I like Monster High dolls as well, I have a few.

    34. I've got some of Disney's 17" LE dolls and a couple of their 12" Designer Fairytale collection ones, as well as a few Dollfies.

    35. I've got 20ish Pullips, 6 Figmas, ~50 Nendoroids, one Tonner doll, and a bunch of anime scale figures.

I've just started on BJDs, it will be interesting to see how that goes over time.

    36. I had blythe,some korean dolls,rements,other doll items~~

    37. I also collect Fashion Royalty, Poppy Parker, some Silkstone and designer Barbies as well as a few beautiful Sybarites. These are a couple of my Sybs Max O Million (blonde) and Baccarat.

    38. I have a Little Pullip, Monster High and MyScene Barbie and MLPs I plan to sell most of them to concentrate on BJDs. I also collect Pokemon plush and figures.
I think that if you are born a collector there's nothing you can do. :D Collecting is in our blood, haha.

    39. Oh my yes. lol

My collection proper is made up of customized 1:4 scale fashion dolls—predominantly Frightfully Tall Monster High dolls.

I also have a small collection of 1:6 scale fashion dolls, including a handful of Barbies, a few Ever After High dolls, yet more Monster High dolls, a Pullip, DC Superhero Girls Batgirl, Das Toyz Stan Lee, and a few other random dolls that are packed away and have been nearly forgotten about. lol

    40. I collect Blythe, too! I have so many, especially the BL girls. At one point I had over 25 of that mold alone! It was getting to be a problem, lol

Now I have just received my first Lati Yellow and I think I am hooked on the resin girls, too!

    41. I have reborn baby dolls, a Maplelea doll and I have my original Cabbage Patch Kids dolls from the 1980s. I had some MH and some other 1/6 figures, but I've either sold them or given them away

    42. I collect any fashion doll that catches my eye. Mostly BJD, Barbie and Integrity JEM dolls. But I love any doll I can dress and play with its hair. Especially if its a good looking guy doll with rooted hair.

    43. The only other dolls I collect are Japanese Kokeshi dolls. They are hand turned out of wood on a lathe, with hand painted details. It was through them I started researching Japanese crafts and history, which eventually led me to Ningyo (another traditional Japanese doll form) and finally bjds. They are what started this obsession!

    44. I have an American Girl colony. I had three as a child and when an American Girl store opened locally... Tragic. (Mostly I like getting really old/well loved dolls and restoring them.)

    45. I have a mix of dolls Other than BJD. I have reborns, porcelain, Robert Tonner, Mel Odom, Heidi Ott, Marie Osmond, Bette Ball, Jan McClean, Madame Alexander, Lee Middleton, Lloyd Middleton, Vogue, Ideal, Effenbee,Barbie, Dough James, Volks 1/6 dolls, Adorable dolls, Monster high, AllieBean babies and other resin babies. I also collect Antique dolls,Nancy Ann,Muffie and Sonja Hartman play dolls.

    46. I still have Bratz simply because of my interest in the series as a kid, and never got rid of the dolls I collected, so now they're my closet's designated Dust Collectors™. (Was anyone else a huge fan of the PS2 games, like Fashion Diamondz and Rock Angelz? No? Okay..)
Also never grew out of my Monster High phase. Personal favorite now is caught between Catrine Demew and Draculaura, but Draculaura have been best girl since the beginning... I can't deny Catrine is at least 2nd favorite because of her pretty sculpt and blank canvas ready for colorful face-ups!
I also had that super-cool, futuristic Dora Links doll, and you can't deny.. That was the og "computer doll" before there was ever a Miraicon with Smart Doll.
Not sure if it counts for anything but I also have a habit of collecting anime figures.Probably would've expanded my doll family a lot by now if it wasn't for those darn Nendoroids...

    47. @deviljewels Ah, Catrine is definitely my favorite MH girl! But narrowing down a second or third favorite stars to get impossible...

    48. Oh yes, I collect other dolls. I've got more than I know what to do with, in fact. Some are vintage toys, some are modern toys, and some are modern collectors items; I'm not terribly picky.

    49. I have literally a couple thousand dolls. From the 1800's to modern. I just love the little monsters! I have a bad habit of rescuing dolls to restore and sell...then after they are restored...I keep them! :o

    51. That could take days...;) And they're all on photobucket. :...( And my camera is broken...:dohbut I'll take a quick video. This is 3 rooms. There are 3 more rooms and another level! A lot have been packed up because we are moving in a year or so.
Here is a crappy video of some of them.

    52. Thanks for that, that's a pretty impressive collection. At around 1:10 when you're panning around at the dolls standing on the floor it kinda looks like a small army :) What do you do about dust?

    53. Wow amazing collection Molliebean :) Do you have flickr? I love looking at pictures of dolls.

    54. Before my love for BJD I used to collect porcelain dolls - I have two Enchanted Dolls and two Hemlig dolls - I also own a Jerryberry with the new body (she's a Penny basic 2016). Porcelain dolls are just so beautiful bust I'm always afraid to play with them, so fragile! And Jerryberrys are just too cute :)

    55. I have got a huge variety of dolls in my collection: Bratz, Monster High, Porcelain, Reborns, Bleeding Edge Goths, a Little Apple Doll, Vintage Vinyl dolls, a Celluloid doll and many others... it's quite exhausting!

    56. long before I own a BJD, I have Pullip, Little Pullip, Little Blythe, Momoko, J-Doll, Jenny, Licca, Monster High, Sandy, Lil' Bratz, and ofc Barbie dolls (including the short-lived Barbie My Scene).
After owning a bjd, I have Ever After High.
Currently aiming to own a Ruruko, Blythe and Petite Chica Cosette Sugar Candy.

    57. I collect some Ever after High dolls, Little apple dolls (Creo and Pestis) and one Susanne Gibson Doll. Maybe this sounds weird but the unusual and rare dolls always catch my eye and my heart.

    58. My "dolls" weren't exactly dolls- I had at one point over 60 "Grand Champions" horses. They were like poor kid Breyers with hair and tail brushable instead of plastic. I don't know if they're even made anymore, but I still have a few of them.

    59. Yesss! I loved the Bratz Rock Angelz game! Such a blast from the past.

I collect Bratz (not so much now), Barbie & Integrity Toys - Poppy Parker and Fashion Royalty. Such stunning dolls with so much detail.
