Hi! I'm wondering if anyone collects dolls other the BJD? I myself collect Hot Toys, Reborn Dolls and some Monster High dolls. My hope is one day I can buy an American Girl doll, which some people think is strange until I say I live in Australia lol!
@jabberwocky92 ( cool screen name btw)...I started collecting "Living Dead Dolls" and have somewhere over 40 of those ha ha, I still love 'em. Then, I found Blythe!!!! And the modding aspects therein. Which is the road which led to BJD dolls. I also bagged a few Monster Highs recently which were all thrift shop, or too good to miss eBay bargains...with a view to modding the lot. I found these amazing little dolls recently called "Zelfs" ( I think from a TV series???) they are strange little things with the most amazing soft Mohair/ Alpaca type hair on them. I would love to find more (although my fella may have different views about that!!!) Plus, I have a couple of Cupie dolls or Cewpie dolls, never sure on the spelling!!!! I am trying to find some really tiny ones. Recently, I was looking at a virtually perfect American Girldoll in a thrift shop for £2.50 and stood holding it, having serious "should I buy you thoughts "???? But, put her back. What is it about AG doll you like? And what size BJD do you prefer???
Aren't Zelfs so cute?! I've seen photos of them online and aww so hard lol. I think the huge thing with AG is there is nothing like it here in Australia and I just adore how you can customise it so much. I also love the diabetes kit it comes with, my sister is diabetic and she would have loved a doll just like her. They are just a beautiful size for both play and posing. As for BJD size I love all the sizes. My first BJD is going to be 26cm BID Iplehouse as well as a puppy and then I'll be looking at getting her mother as my second doll which may be an Angell Studio doll. What size do you like?
My 1st was a DC Zora ( which is 32cm high).. She is yoSd considered a Tiny... Bought way back in 2012 I didn't even know what a BJD was when I bought her, the original owner joked that I was entering a very addictive, expensive hobby!!!! ( wow, at that time I thought Blythe hurt the pocket!!!! ) I then acquired a ResinSoul Mei 42cm ( considered Kid size, I kinda still get confused!!!) She seemed Huge, and pretty clunky next to the Doll Chateau, and the difference in resin quality really stood out. It was through this experience that I learned a lot about what I liked in a bjd, although there is lots I could do with Mei I haven't bonded like I did with My "Zouelle Neverfell " DC Zora (who was love on first sight). I have now got a serious Doll Chateau love going. I am waiting for a DC Irma (50cm Kid size) with a Delia head (ordered back in January) this doll is gonna be huge for me, I don't think my fella realises how big he he!!!! But, I seem to love the tinies!!!! Coz I have also got on order a DC Andre and DC Carol !!!! I think then that's me done for quite a while!!!! I know what you mean about the doll like me thing... I would have soooo loved that when I was a kid, plus some of that furniture you can buy is amazing!!! Wish some of that would hit the thrift shop he he
Monster High and I have a bunch of assorted 1/6 scale off topics from different makers. Original Jem and the Hologram dolls are somehow finding their way to me via thrift stores. I've reborn a few babies but didn't keep them.
Hi jabberwocky92. Have you seen the Australian girl dolls? I have Matilda and Emily. They are a little bigger than American girl dolls (something I also collect) and they have some unique features. The Australian dolls have a split in between the big toe so that they can wear thongs/flip flops. They also have a solid upper chest (and a soft cloth belly) so they look great wearing singlets and summer dresses. The America dolls have a soft cloth body that ends at the neck and shoulders, so in my opinion, they don't look great in clothing that shows the upper chest/shoulder area. My only problem with both the American and Australian dolls is that their knees and elbows do not bend. I have been spoiled by the flexibility of BJD!!
I've collected Living Dead Dolls since I was a tween. 10 years later and I still love them! I also have Cleo, Draculaura, Lagoona, Frankie, and Clawdeen from Monster High. Nellie and Samantha from American Girl. I have some pretty porcelain dolls as well.
I collect old anime dolls I have a bunch of sailor moon, tokoyo mew mew,and other series. I also collect disney dolls too from the movies I like, like the live action disney movies I use pullips and monster high but I've kinda of stopped
I collect Pullip dolls and I used to collect Monster High and Living Dead Dolls xD In fact, I discovered BJD because of Pullip dolls!
Besides BJDs, I collect Azone pure neemo dolls, Isul dolls, Dollfie Dreams, living dead dolls, antique porcelain dolls. My collection is small because I collect only male dolls and it's hard to find a good variety of boy dolls that are not BJD or that don't need any kind of customization...which is a good for my pocket but still, I wish there was more out there. I saw someone in flickr with american boy dolls, I liked them and I might buy an american girl to customize it as a boy someday. I only like female dolls in BJDs. I think I got tired of all the barbies and girl dolls my mom used to gift me when I was a kid so boy dolls are always more interesting to me ^^; Besides those dolls, I also collect plushies, Tokidoki, so so happy, anime figures, rilakkuma, gudetama, San-x characters and many other cute merchandise.
Yup, I collect a variety of other dolls (and doll-adjacent figures). There's actually a whole thread dedicated to DoA'ers OT dolls/figures here: Show us your OT dolls and figures.
Australian Girls?! Oh god no I didn't know there was any!! Oh man I can feel my credit card trying to hide from me!! I'll look today at them and see if there are any I like. The not bending at the knees can be annoying but most of my dolls I like to have standing on stands so you can see their outfits and such. Do the Australian girls have a good range of clothes/accessories? I'm going to look at the Our Generation dolls at Kmart next time I am there and might put some on layby along with the two monster high dolls from the special they did in the Great Barrier Reef. Oh gosh!! Finally a place to show off my other loves once I unpack them from their boxes lol. Moving a collectors house is always a pain >_< I think at one stage my dad actually said 'she never had this many dolls growing up!'
I collect plushies as well! I have a good size Build A Bear collection and collection of realistic animal plushies. My two favourite are a large giraffe and elephant that my niece can sit on if she wishes too.
I collect plushies (mostly pigs), lalaloopsy horses and other lalaloopsy animals, Fashionista Barbies, and maybe soon I'll be collecting monster high dolls! I also have a lot of old action figures.
@KoalaSam ... WoW, I loveeee the sound of your Aussie Girls!!!! They sound so much better than the USA version. The split toe, and half body are just fantastic design changes!!!! Imagine little Geta shoes and Kimonos Arrrrr cute!!! @jabberwocky92 The Australian version sound even better than the real thing!!!! Ha ha ha that comment bout the credit card hiding very funny !!!!
I tried Dollfie Dreams for a while, but sold mine after too much frustration. I still think one day I will get one again Else I have some Blythe, which I really adore and currently try to finally customize. I like mine carved and with eyebrows, but I also enjoy the default look of them very much which is why I took my time to tackle this project. Because I like Blythe so much I decided to buy a Pullip MIO Kit, and while I loooove painting their faces I just don't enjoy having them at home. Oh well, but at least I tried.
I collect anime (specifically Sailor Moon) dolls from the 90s. I also collect new age Disney Princess BJDs (slightly addicting)
@Ara ... Can I ask more about the pullip MIO kit.? What exactly is it? I have just tried to google it, but didn't really get anywhere? Loveeee trying to customise the Blythe too
Sure! MIO means "Make it own", and it's a Kit incl. one completely blank Pullip. You need to put her together, assemble the eyemech and paint her. No finished chips, wig, or clothes included. They offer her in five different colors, and there are also MIO Kits for other Groove lines (Dal, Taeyang etc.). Here's some more information on them: MIO Pullip Kit How to Assemble! When they are in stock somewhere you can get them for pretty cheap (around 35$), and they are perfect for customizer. However, they are often sold out and tend to get pretty expensive during these times, you need to keep an eye on updates and check stores frequently. I honestly wish there would be something like that for Blythe! If you just want to customize (and sell them) you still need to spend 100+$ to get one :/
I really love Disney dolls! Though I have to be very picky about which ones I collect because it could be SO easy to wind up with a million of them! Right now I only have 2 Disney Attractionistas dolls, though eventually I'd like to get the whole collection. I also love the Precious Moments dolls dressed up as Disney princesses, and I'd love to get Belle and Jasmine, and maaaaybe Snow White. They also have a line of 'Animators Collections' dolls that I just...omg, I want them ALL!! Definitely Belle and Jasmine (since they're my automatic go-tos) and also Pocahontas, Mulan, Snow White, Aurora, Lilo... I also collect Ever After Highs! I've definitely slowed way down after going a bit crazy these past few months, but any version of Rosabella Beauty is basically an instant wishlist item!
I collect Ann Estelle and Friends made by Tonner, Patsy by Tonner, Ten Peng by Ruby Red, Senson 12" by Ruby Red, Strawberina by Ruby Red, Bethany By Helen Kish, Riley & Friends by Helen Kish, 14" Chrysalis dolls by Helen Kish. My first love is the Ann Estelle and Friends dolls by Tonner - they are what started me collecting dolls.
I collect Pullip & Friends, and I have some special (to me, at least) Barbies and Star Wars action figures. I also collect Hujoos, but I do think of those as BJDs, albeit not on-topic at DOA since they are made of ABS plastic. Although I don't own any yet, I love Betsy McCall dolls from the 1950s. The closest I come to having a grail doll is the 1959 20-inch "flirty eye" American Character Betsy McCall. I could probably find one on ebay or Ruby Lane, but I don't want to for some reason. I think I want the excitement of coming across one at a flea market, thrift store, or antique shop!
{laugh!} Thanks - but it's only be dint of my fiance being a collector too (of all sorts of stuff) that I can get away with having dolls all over the house. Mind you, that's also the reason we're so short of space - between both our collections of various stuff, it's getting pretty crowded. Teddy
@Teddy, that looks like so much fun! I bet I could disappear into that room for days just admiring your collection piece by piece. I like this attitude. It's probably the best way to collect anything if your goal is to be happy...which I think it should be.
That's true. I should have said that I know that there are probably as many reasons to have a collection as there are collectors, and I can't say one is more valid than the other. It's more fair to say that, for me, surrounding myself with things that make me happy is the best approach. If I were, say, focused on resale value or a particular aesthetic, it probably wouldn't be as satisfying for me. To each, their own.
@Teddy ... I love your collection, doll room!!!! I would love to have a few hours to spend with you, talking through some of your favourites. I loveeee eclectic collections the best. How many years have you been collecting dolls??
That's just a corner of the living-room (it's known as the Dolly-Drift Corner) - there are also dolls in the spare bedroom and at various other points around the house (wherever they can find space among the armour, books, weaponry, costumes, military figurines, fabric and yarn stash...etc.) All my life - so well over 40 years. I can get behind that approach Teddy
Teddy my eye was immediately drawn to Spiderman and his boyfriend. Totally cracked me up. I would love to get lost in your house/collection. It looks so much fun and that's the whole point of collecting, isn't it. I only rent one small room in a house with room mates (who do NOT appreciate dolls) but I manage to have a corner of my room for dolls.
Also I think I see where the Holy Grail has been hiding. The Knights Templar have been looking in the wrong place all these years. Seriously, I love all the heraldry and armor collectibles. Very cool. The only other dolls I collect at the moment are Monster High, though I only began this year and only have about a dozen of them. I don't think I'll be buying any more. The hobby has taken a turn towards OOAK repaints, and I'm not into that with MH. I also have a small collection of porcelain dollhouse dolls to go with my dollhouse minis. A couple of them are antiques.
I have two Monster High dolls (the werewolf girls) and the embryo of a dolls-house castle project that hasn't quite got off the ground yet (my PukiPuki and RealPuki clan will live in it if it ever gets finished) I have a fair number of American Girl doll props and furniture but don't like the AG dolls themselved (something about the cloth body and vinyl limbs doesn't work for me). You have to dress them in high necked outfits all the time or the transition from cloth to vinyl shows. I preferred the all-vinyl Magic Attic dolls, Teddy
I have a ridiculous collection of Licca-chan, Jenny, and their friends. My latest Licca photo. Her name is Lily, and she is an LPC model Licca-chan from Licca Castle.
They are tempting (well, in truth, the clothes are more tempting to me than the dolls who are a bit too "Anime" in the face for my tastes) Teddy
I don't really collect other dolls per se, but I do have a few non-BJDs around... A pair of Monster High girls (A Cleo and a Spectra who've been given better hair-), a few Little Apple dolls, a pair of fashion doll sized Obitsus (Kaya and Kiri-),a Dakin Merlin who was a gift from my great aunt many, many moons ago, a pale blue vintage china doll (named Blue, of course- XD), a muslin cloth doll that my god-daughter made (She has ridiculously long hair, so I call her Godiva-), plus a whole horde of plushies (including a few that are versions of my favorite City of Heroes MMO toons and the red-robed Traveler from Journey-) and Folkmanis puppets, two POPs (the Diva from 'Fifth Element' and Lo Pan from 'Big Trouble in Little China'-) and a small group of action figures (Gandalf in both grey and white mode, Sephie, Altair and Ezio from the Assassin's Creed games and one adorable blue tachikoma-).
I thought I'd stop collecting MH once I got my first BJD, or at least the initial "ohmygodineedit" would go away -- alas, that is not the case. I am still putting many Monster High dolls on my amazon wish list. I got into that a little late but have been going a bit crazy and found lots of good sales. I have... 16, now. And while I don't think I'll "collect" any more, I still adore American Girl dolls. Felicity was my first and is my most precious. I've considered sending her to the doll doctor to get her skin cleaned and restrung, but... she's earned it all! I've had her 15+ years. I think I like her wear and tear. Besides her, I also have Kaya. The most I want to do now is collect the rest of Felicity's outfits, but as she's retired they tend to be more expensive (though, I guess, not compared to BJD!) I also quite like the Disney Animator's Collection dolls, but my sister is more into collecting them. I have Rapunzel who I love, but I don't know if I will spend money on more since they're not as posable. (I'd like to get Pocahontas, but I hate how sad she looks!!) Besides that, I have two Joan Walsh Anglud dolls that I find simply adorable and wouldn't mind picking up more of.
I collect Pullip dolls, and I have almost 60 of them so far. ^.^ They're the doll I have the most of, but I also collect Ever After High dolls, and I have a Kikipop and an AI doll, a Licca-Chan, and one of the older Sailor Moon dolls along with Tuxedo Mask.
I have a few Hot Toys, if three counts as a collection! There's the Winter Soldier, civilian Steve Rogers, and a Liam Neeson who's gonna be customized into Stanford Pines.
Since they can wear Blythe clothes, it can be pretty tempting since there is so much available in that size. So I understand what you mean! It really is! I adore them. ^^ Thank you so much! Here is my ESC Aki-chan named Clover and my Castle Miho named Nicola. They are two of Licca-chan's friends. You can also view more of my photos (including BJD pics) here.
Monster & Ever After High here, though that's stopped since I bought my first BJD - I have a few other collectors dolls, a couple of Barbies & Xena Warrior Princess, Gabrielle & Callisto XD
I collect those Japanese tourist souvenir dolls. You can find them in import shops, but I prefer to hunt them down in antique stores. I have quite a collection now. The picture below includes the majority of them, but definitely not all. I have 3 more not shown. I prefer the older ones that were actually made in Japan, because they are much more finely crafted and expressive.
Hmmmm... One of these things is not like the others! Great photo! I like antique-ish Asian stuff, too (mostly dolls, books, and kimono.)
Strange/uncommon stuffed animals. I have to clean house and find them all, since I haven't played with some since I was a kid, but I have a 3-foot Dinosaur, hedgehogs, a boar, some spiders, one realistic bass... things like that.
Ooh beautiful! I have a few of these too! One was in my family for a while (not quite sure where she came from) and we found another when I was a teenager... I think at a thrift shop? Something like that. I immediately nabbed her and stuck her in my room, and my parents let me take them both when I moved out. They're a doll that if I come across, I will certainly get! I just don't go looking for them. (I'm the same way with Baoding balls).
I love seeing what other people collect I collect living dead dolls, krypt kiddies, little apple dolls and Buffy the vampire slayer figures. I also have a few pulips and other random dolls and figures..
I own some Pullips, one Azone, one obitsu e one Monster High (Frankie). Obitsu---> http://i67.tinypic.com/9949xv.jpg Azone---> http://i63.tinypic.com/2cz6hrs.jpg Pullip Dark Lady---> http://i68.tinypic.com/20mkj9.jpg Youtsuzu, Steampunk Alice and Yomi---> http://i66.tinypic.com/351d6di.jpg
I collect a lot of dolls, I have a few barbies from when I was young that will remain special to me even if they aren't displayed anywhere. An assortment of Blythe, Pullip, and friends, some Monster High, and Ever After High, a couple of Liv Dolls, Porcelains I've had for years, a Groove AI bjd (abs so off topic) a Hujoo Nana Freya (also abs I believe) and a rather large assortment of plushies and My Little Ponies. Really if it grabs my attention and makes me feel happy I add it to the ever-growing collection.
as for what I collect: Monster high/everafter high, and bratz. I also have a liv doll I'm working on, which is very neat.
I have a large doll collection other than BJDs: Barbie (early 90's and older), Tonner Betsy/Tyler/Kitty Collier/Kripplebush kids, Madame Alexander Cissy, various anime dolls, Robotech dolls, Jenny dolls, Licca and family, 14" Furga dolls, Strawberry Shortcake, older Pullips, Sindy dolls, Jody the Country Girl, FR Jem & the Holograms....basically anything that catches my fancy. I've been collecting for years - started as a teen and used most of my money on second hand dolls and restored them. Hobby Room 2 by Julie, on Flickr
Look at that room! It's amazing! I'm hoping to do something like this with my spare room to put all my dolls and dragon statues up. I've currently just got a small display happening in my room with my monster high dolls and three of my Hot Toys and the rest are still in their boxes waiting to come out and go on display lol. The problem with having to many dolls and not having the time to unpack them after you move house xD!
