Contest Customizing Contest: Back to Basics

Jul 30, 2018

    1. @GreenTeaSlug Mine was just the opposite: I hate how it looks in real life, but on camera it looks AMAZING.

    2. I just submitted my entry. Man it was fun! Especially when I've been painting faces for a decade in a pretty much same way all the time. And now not being able to use acrylics or a retarder was a challenge but in the end I really liked the theme of only using basic items, so I had to join. :D

    3. And I'm laughing so hard. My very first face up was better than this! But I got to learn so much about different techniques I didn't even know about. Thanks everyone for all the tricks and tips! Good luck!

    4. Can I tweak my description? Now that I think about it, it isn't quite right.

    5. Submitted my entry! What a fun contest. It really loosened me up, and I think the next faceup I do will be a lot more relaxing and enjoyable! Buuuut I'm definitely using paint for my next one and NOT one single watercolor pencil lol! Thanks again for another super fun and challenging contest! :D Can't wait to see everyone's entries!

      • Cake Cake x 1
    6. You can edit your entry as long as you are able to see it. Once the thread is gone, your entry has been processed for the voting and you will not be able to edit it :)

    7. Got my entry in! That sure was difficult without using paints/thinner, and I missed my mica powder big time :'D But, pretty happy with how it turned out! This is the first faceup I've done in over a year so I'm glad it's kicked me back into doing them; I have so many dolls I need to paint!
      Can't wait to see everyone's entries! :D

    8. Annnnd done. Although the colors in my saved jpeg pictures look a bit more saturated then they do before I saved them as jpeg's, and I'm not sure how to fix that.

    9. Good luck, everybody! Can't wait to see your entries. This contest was really challenging. I had to put all my other painting materials out of reach to not unconsciously make use of them. :sweat

    10. And there is now less then 11 hours to go. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's work. This was my first time entering the faceup competition for the DoA anniversary, and I must say I had a lot of fun, and while my design doesn't look as nice as I would like it to, it has inspired me to try doing some more, and to play around with different techniques.

If only MSC wasn't so darn expensive.:sweat

    11. Yay! second contest that I've managed to enter this time. Two more than I ever did before ^-^.
Didn't think I was going to pull this one off......
Intrigued to see what everybody else has done.

    12. Oh man, I HOPE I got my entry in on time. I'm pretty much in tears right now because we just had a super huge family emergency and I'm just a huge mess right now. :(

      • x 2
    13. @Caffeine a la Mocha Im pretty sure you good :)

Its not pass the deadline yet and the form entry link is still there

I hope everything, family wise, is alright or gets improved and that you feel better soon

    14. @GreenTeaSlug Thank you so much! I'm hoping so too. Worrying at a hospital is no fun at all.

Thank you for your kind words :aheartbea

    15. Good luck to everyone who entered. I can't wait to see all your beautiful dolls! :D

    16. It's today ! I'm too early but I know I'll be camping this site despite my better judgement just because I'm so eager to see everybody's work!

This kind of event is so motivating and captivating!
It's a mean to learn a lot through the creativity of others, and this alone fascinates me!
      :dance

    17. Yes! I mean right now I mainly feel as if I've learned that there's a reason we generally paint with paint, draw with pencils and use pastels for shading, but there's still a sense of discovery in pushing the limits of what a medium will do.

    18. I can’t wait to see the entries posted!! For every contest, not just this one, but I’m really curious how everyone worked around the limitations of this one!

      • x 2
      • Cake Cake x 1
    19. Yeah same here, I'm dying to see the socks, and I can't sew at all, so I didn't enter that one XD

      • Cake Cake x 1
    20. I was thinking this exact same thing.

    21. Crap, didn't keep a close enough watch on the date. That and I've been so busy with work. Not that I would have won, though I really do want a Luts Silver, but it would have been good practice. ...And I usually need deadlines like this or it doesn't get done. :sweat

    22. It's finally time to move on to voting! :cheer
It's been a blast going though the entries you all submitted and seeing how you tackled the limitations for this year's customization contest. I hope this challenge was a fun and interesting one, and hopefully you got some new useful skills along the way! (But yaay, you're free to go back to paints and as many pencils as you want now! Phew! :XD:)

Please take a moment to go though all of the entries this year and vote for those three that you think best fit the criteria presented. The criteria you're voting on for this year is:
      • Which entry has the most creative design?
      • Which entry shows the best execution?
      • Which entry is the most unique?
      :cake: Customization - Voting :cake:

Make sure you check out this year's for fun entries too! ~

:cake: Customization - For fun entries :cake:

After the winners have been announced in this thread you will be able to reveal which entry is yours, but until then, shhh, you cannot speak of it! Not just yet, it's still a secret! :eusa_sile

    23. Oh and lets not forget all the glitter. ALL the glitter you can use now! ~

      :celebrate

      Magnificent!

    24. I'm 99% sure I don't stand a chance of winning, you guys are amazing!! I'm having a really hard time choosing just three favorites to vote for. WOW! :love

      • Cake Cake x 1
    25. :love So many original beauties in there !!!
      Goodness Gracious!
It was worth the wait :D

      • Cake Cake x 1
    26. There is some truly wonderful work on display - I'm so impressed with everyone (and also with how many different approaches people have managed to take to a very basic set of materials).

      • Cake Cake x 1
    27. I finally managed to narrow it down to vote, but just know if I didn't vote yours, I probably was petting the screen, apologizing to your doll for not choosing them and telling them they're pretty anyway. :XD: I found something I liked about every single entry!

    28. I'm thoroughly convinced that some of you are magicians. Fantastic entries everyone!

      • x 1
      • Cake Cake x 1
    31. So many beautiful entries :D SOOOOO much creativity outside the box!

Im overwhelmed I will come back later to vote so it is more fair but generally everyones entries surpassed my expectation

basic my:eusa_sile these are good

Is it okay to post the voting links in the first post so that it is easier to find for people who are not following the conversation?

    32. Wow, so many entries! It's really hard to vote for just three - amazing work! I'll have to check them a couple of times not to miss anyone's doll.
      :love

      • x 1
      • Cake Cake x 1
    33. These are really amazing! I can't believe you all made such beautiful faceups using just basic materials! Looking through all of these has encouraged me to try doing my own faceups as well! It was so hard to pick just 3, so so hard! Good luck to everyone participating!!

      • x 1
      • Cake Cake x 1
    34. I had a really hard time voting. I had to take notes of which ones to come back to and look at more than once or twice - and there were many.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    35. Yes, I'll add it in just a moment! :)

      • x 1
    36. you know, I appreciate the person that liked every entry, felt bad when I saw some had multiple likes and some were without in the entries up for the voting

I voted, it was hard because there were so many great entries and so many that I cant believe only used pastels and one color pencil, true artists wow :D

      • x 1
    37. Omg you guys!! These are so good! I had the hardest time voting. I think I went through everything at least five times before I managed to start narrowing it down. I should have done what @Adell did and taken notes. There's so much creativity in all those entries, amazing job everyone <3

Now that I'm on my big screen I think I'm going to look at them again even though I'm done voting...just for the pretties.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    38. I've been doing the same; going back and look at everybody's work one by one, reading the concept description and learning about new doll models and companies :D as well as trying to figure out which technique they used to get those cool effects on resin.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    39. Wow, these are fantastic! I've only had time to skim through them so far. I want to sit down and study them in depth... then the hard job of picking only three to vote for. Well done, everyone! :)

      • Cake Cake x 1
    40. So many good entries!! Since I can't vote for it I feel the need to say that first one of the just for fun entries is breathtaking :o

      • Cake Cake x 1
    41. Holy cow, everyone did so great! Everybody really rose to the challenges of this contest's limitations - I think it's really important for people to see that you don't need a lot of stuff to make a great faceup!

It was really really really hard to narrow down my votes though. :sorry I kept changing my mind over and over again :XD:

      • Cake Cake x 1
    42. My entry was disqualified. They said the picture with the materials didn't show up, but I checked it twice and it showed up for me. It's not their fault, of course, but still frustrating. These events have been so frustrating for me, I kind of wish I hadn't tried to begin with. It hasn't been nearly as fun as I thought it would be. Sorry, just needed to vent. Good luck to all of you successful entrants!

    43. Voted! It was so hard to decide. :love
      So much breathtaking works.

I am looking forward to seeing that people did for other contests, too. ;)

      • Cake Cake x 1
    44. /hug So sorry this had to happen to you at this moment :(

    45. @Lawrichai Thanks, me too. These things do happen sometimes, but I don't know that I'll take part again. It's been too frustrating to be worth it. But I enjoy seeing what others have come up with.

    46. I wonder if a moderator could at least post it in the "for fun" section so we can get to see the fruit of your labor...

    47. Voted! Some hard choices had to be made.

    52. There was so many great works that it was really hard to choose! I saw several that must've taken AGES to finish! I stared at all of them of several days before finally giving my votes now lol. XD People are so creative, it makes me happy to see this sort of variety in ideas and executions for a very simple setting like this!

    54. Now that the results of the Voting is shown, I'd like to reveal my entry.
Mine was #8: The Luts Dreaming EL painted with tiny vampire fangs.

      Congratulations to the winners!

Though I didn't win first place in this contest, I do believe that I still won something worth treasuring.
The work on my doll is the best that I have ever done thus far, and I am so in love with him.

I hope that the other contestants feel the same way,
All the dolls are turned out gorgeous! :D

    55. Congratulations to the winners indeed!

I mostly joined in the past for the sake of having an encouraging reason to do something with my BJD; I was already thinking about redoing a bunch of my floating heads, but was lucky that family wanted to visit just when the DoA anniversary contests were announced! I was thinking of joining the sewing contest once again this year, as I never felt confident enough to do one of the face up challenges before. However, the visiting members of my family have small children and I don't like to have my resin dolls out when the young ones are around; face up-ing one of the floating heads seemed a lot less time consuming. I'll just have to manage to sew for them some other time. It was a fun challenge nonetheless and I was truly impressed with the level of skill by all the submissions. I am always impressed by the talented folk we have in this forum, and I learned something new about pastels by joining this one. It was fun! My entry was #5, the SoulDoll Zenith Chu. (:

Edit: Forgot to thank the DoA staff for holding these events every year for all of the members to enjoy, and the companies and individuals who donate prizes for the event! Thanks for taking the time to do this!

And with that I'd like to say thank you to everyone who entered! It's been so much fun to run this contest and seeing all the creativity with the limitations you got this year. I'm so impressed with what you achieved, eeeee! :D

    57. :aeyepop: Second place ?!?
And after seeing everybody's work I wasn't even expecting to make it in the first three...

Thank you everybody for your votes!
I'm so happy you like my art this much <3

I want to give a special shout out to #4 freckle guy, #12 Yami kawaii, #19 forest Elf, #20 old style with flair, and of course first place #22 all of whom I sincerely believed did a way better job than I did! <3
Guys I really love your work! :chibi

My personal favorite concepts are #13 Organic tattoo and #16 white chrysanthemums :love
I find them very inspiring and so beautiful to look at.

... and a special thanks to the moderator's patience in replying to my many questions, public and private. ;)

I'm glad so many people joined in, it's so refreshing to see all those styles and techniques. You can learn new ideas just by comparing the faceup with the materials pictures. =^.^=

    58. Congratulations to the winners! I was #12! The yami kawaii faceup :D this was a fun and interesting contest, I definitely prefer using paints but I did learn some new techniques that I'm sure to use in the future! #9 was my fave! I knew they would win! Everyone did an awesome job though, there were so many different creative faceups <3

    60. Congrats to the winners!

I was entry # 28. I have to say making top five isn't so bad for someone who hasn't done any type of face up work in a bagillion years.:whee: And painting with pastels was pretty interesting. I ended up really liking my design that I might redo it to make it sleeker and do the body up as well.
