Contest Customizing Contest: Back to Basics

Jul 30, 2018

    1. Voting has ended! Please check out the winners in the post below! :)

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take a step back. Look around you. Do you remember your first faceup, or your first attempt at it? The pastels smudged, gloss everywhere and not so straight lines. Hours lost because gluing eyelashes ruined it all. Or maybe the faceup was very fitting for your doll even though you didn't quite make it like you wanted? Maybe you've never even tried it yet? - This is the perfect time!

Customization is such a big part of this hobby. Many of us will give it a go eventually, with various degrees of success. Some of us do faceups for other people, some paint only on their own dolls and some of us are still completely new to it. Customization brings our beloved dolls to life so it's no wonder so many or us are interested in trying it.

This year, as we're taking a step back, we're focusing on starting out in the hobby. The challenge is to create something out of those first, most basic supplies. Give it a go, maybe you'll learn something new or discover a way to work that you never tried before!

New and experienced alike - show us the creativity you can achieve with only the most essential customizing supplies!

      Limitations
      • Pastels: No limit to the amount of colors. Dry and/or mixed with water only.
      • One single color pencil: You are limited to only use one color pencil, so choose your color wisely!
      • Gloss: For the finishing touch.
      • Sealer: Can be any type of sealer.
There is no limit to brushes, erasers, eyelashes, cotton, glue or other tools typically used for painting faceups, tattoos and body blushing.

Acrylic, gouache, watercolor paint and other painting mediums are not allowed for this contest. You may only use the materials listed in the above list.

      Contest Rules
      1. Each member may enter designs on ONE doll or doll head. Entries can be any combination of faceups, tattoos and/or body blushing. Entries can be just heads without bodies.
      2. Designs can only be executed in any of the medium listed. Make sure you only use the supplies that are allowed.
      3. No Photoshop or otherwise digitally enhancing the design. Only resizing and cropping are allowed.
      4. Designs should be created for this contest. Please do not submit work done prior to this event.

      Additional specific rules:
      • Photos: All entries must include three photos of the design from different angles, showing the design clearly and uncovered. Your photos should be showcasing only the work you have done. They should not include other dolls, props, or sets. Watermarks or signatures to the photos are not allowed.Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 600 pixels on the longest side.
      • Materials photo: All entries must also include one photo of all the materials used, including proper respiratory protection(very important, please be safe!). Everything should be clearly visible. If you are new to faceup and customization, please check the Respiratory Protection thread.
      • Prior work: Entries may not include any previous work at all. Faceups, tattoos and body blushing should be done on a blank doll. Doll with prior extreme modifications may not be used. Dolls with very small modifications (like an eye opening or closing, slight facial restructuring, or pierced ears) are allowed.
All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements.
IMPORTANT: Describing your entry, posting photos, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

    2. FAQ

General questions asked(in this thread or through AtM) will be collected in this post, so you can check here to see if your question has already been answered before posting. It will be updated continually.

A drilled lip ring is fine, I would classify that as a minor modification.

Adjusting the color balance and light levels slightly to have the photo look natural is fine, but anything that goes beyond that is not allowed. If you have poor lightning I would highly suggest trying to find a better place to take the photos if at all possible though :)

Modeling paste is not allowed ~

      That's fine to do :)

Your entry must have a head, so even if you plan on only doing tattoo work the body needs to have a head. The head cannot have a faceup, but you can choose not to paint it for the contest.

Yes, you may choose to only do tattoo work for your entry. Your doll cannot have any faceup, blushing or tattoos prior, regardless if you want to paint only the body. Only minor modifications are allowed, such as if the doll has a piercing or has had an eye opening.

Since you are allowed to include eyes and wig when showcasing your finished work, you would be allowed to glue hair to him if you want.

Yes, you can include eyes and wig for the showcasing photos if you want.

Wig and eyes are allowed, just make sure we can actually see all of your work ~

Yes, it's okay to enter multiple competitions for prize, granted you have not won in any of those types of contests in the last five years. The limitations (if you win) is that if you win the customization contest one year, then you are not allowed to compete in the following years customization contests. You would still be able to enter for prize in other contests, such as for example the photography contest.

This is part of the limitation this year. We wanted to focus on just the minimal amount of supplies you need to make a faceup, body blushing or tattoo. In some sense it's also to challenge the people who have a lot of supplies already but also welcome those that only have just the essential things needed for this, to "level the field" in some way.

Limiting it to just one pencil means you might need to get creative with what you have and that's a big part of the challenge this year :)

To both of you: The doll you use must be on topic for DoA. If you are unsure of whether the doll is on topic or not, please always post in Ask the Moderators :3nodding:

Any pearl ex powder or glitter of any kind is not allowed.

It's a sad day, no glitter!

Nay to pearlescent powders. Those would not be allowed.

Yes, you are allowed to make paint using dry pastels mixed with water.

I'm not familiar with this technique so my tip would be to ask in the Respiratory Protection thread. If the method is completely safe to use without any face protection then you need to specify it in your entry description for materials used(so we don't disqualify you for not having proper protection).

To everyone: It is in no circumstance okay to not use proper face protection when needed. You are not allowed to risk your health (or those around you) to enter this contest.

Cotton and glue are fine to use in whichever way you want.
I'm not sure what other masking materials you're thinking of but if it's only a temporary thing, as in it will not be present on the faceup when you take the final photos, then it's fine to use.

      Yes, that's fine :)

You can enter with just a head ~

The photos should be in JPG format and 600 pixels on the longest side. I'll add that to the first post.

No, you don't have to use it :)

      Yes, that's fine ~

Eyelashes are allowed, and so are pastels.
Powders of any kind are not allowed, but you're free to turn the pastels into powder and use that for your faceup/tattoo/body blushing.

      1. Yes, that's fine.
      2. Those would count as a pencil, so you would only be able to choose one of them.

No, you may only mix the pastels (and the pen) with water.

      Yes, a wig is fine.

Yes, you'll need to cover up the body if you don't plan on taking off the head to photograph it separately from the body :)

    4. oh wow this is going to be really interesting :D
That "single color pencil" will be my hardest challenge since I always use lots of those... ><

      To the design table!
      Time to brainstorm

    5. Ooooh I already know exactly what I want to do! I’m super excited for this!

One question—it says ear piercing is allowed, but what about other drilled piercings? Are they allowed or should they be removed for the contest? For example, if your doll already has a drilled lip ring, would that disqualify the doll, either due to the mod or the ring not being allowed in the materials list? Thanks!

    6. Nice! :D
I have a question about "No Photoshop" editing. Color balance and light levels editing are also not allowed? I have very bad light conditions for photographing and colors always are wrong.

    7. This sounds like fun, even though I've never done a faceup before im my life :sweat
I hope my blank heads get here in time to do something for the contest. If not, there's always next year :)

    8. QUESTION: Is a modeling paste allowed to make 3D scars?

      Thank you :)

    11. That's my favorite limitation. It's kind of mean, yet so interesting :mwahaha

I can't wait to see what you all make out of these very limited supplies :cheer
I'm actually planning to join in myself (for fun of course). It's definitely going to be a challenge, but I want to give it a go ~

    12. Oooh this sounds fun! I've been needing an excuse to get me back into doing faceups again!

Quick question: with the coloured pencil, since watercolour pencils are usually the type to use for faceups, I'm assuming that using your pencil like paint (wetting a brush and taking the pigment, or painting over lines you've already put down with water to strengthen the colour) would be against the rules?

      • Cake Cake x 1
    13. That's fine to do :)

      • x 2
    14. I'm thinking I might do body blushing/tattoos, can my entry be a body with no head? If it must have the head, can the head be blank or have a faceup done previously (and stated that it was done previously) or must it have a faceup specifically done for this contest?

    15. If I`m understanding the rules correctly... tattoos are allowed instead of faceups? If so, by `blank` doll, can it be a doll with a faceup, but the body has no body blushing or tattoos?

    16. I have a strange question - I have a doll I was planning to wipe and redo that I could use in this contest, but part of what I wanted to do was to glue hair to him in place of a wig.... would that be allowed or should I hold off and do it after the contest?

All this assumes I get him done in time to even enter XD and that one colored pencil limit.... omg. XD

    17. Why is only one color of pencil allowed?

      • x 1
    18. Oh, this is interesting! I might have to see if I can find a way to make this work for me...

      • Cake Cake x 1
    19. Only one pencil? Drat. And my girl is out, she's too dark to not need the opaqueness of paint. Looks like I'm doing [DATA REDACTED :eusa_sile]. Wet pastels should do most of the work, I hope. :huh?:

    20. Can you include eyes and wig for this competition?
I purely ask because I know some are bothered by eyeless faces

    21. What about pearlescent powders? Yay or nay? XD

And since you said pastels can be mixed with water, does that mean we can paint with pastel? :3

    22. YES! Awesome! Are we allowed to showcase the doll with a wig and eyes or only blank headed? And is it okay to enter multiple competitions for prizes?

    23. What about pearl ex powders? They’re pretty commonly used- would they be ok to use?

    24. Not sure exactly where to ask this but if I’m going to use a sponge-on technique for my sealant, what respiratory protection do I need to include?

      • x 1
    25. Great contest! I love the idea of "basic". I almost think there could be more limitations like using only 3 colors …

Is it allowed to use masking materials or to make use of glue or cotton as masking materials?

      • Cake Cake x 1
    26. I think I may join this just for fun..I know I have no faceup skills what so ever so I'm not expecting any votes, but I sure do have a lot of blank heads...all the comments are interesting because I'm like why is only using 1 color pencil a big restriction..lol..I'm like Idon't even know how to use pencils that well...and ugh gloss is never my friend, I'm probably using them all wrong. All I have are pastels so I'm good to go.

Gloss can be terrifying! It took a while before I felt like I had "mastered" it ~

    30. Ahhh this is terribly exciting! I have a question about modifications. I understand eye modifications are allowed, but I was wondering if ear modifications are also ok? (The sculpt I would be using for the contest requires eye opening and turning elf ears into human ones)

    32. Wait, does it have to be a full doll or is a head only acceptable? I have many blank heads but only one of them fits a body in my possession. So I need to figure out which one to use for the contest

    33. Really like this concept! just one pencil color tho......thats hard for me. Wish my blank heads would have come in this month, so I will have to let this contest slide by and wait for the wonderfull entry's of other people.

    35. Got inspired by this last night and had to execute my idea on a blank head I've had rolling around today. Trying to get my interest in painting face ups back, so this was a good push for me. :3

What size should the entry images be?

    36. Do we have to use gloss? I typically don't, as I don't like the look of it.

No, you don't have to use it :)

    38. Omg trying to come up with one pencil is like death XD
on pretty much every doll I use at least
      Black
      white
      blue-grey
      blue
      purple
      brown
      pink
and usually various shades of each D: and thats not including if a doll isn't a brunette! Hair colors!!
This is going to be so much harder than I thought.

    39. It seems like when I apply the gloss it takes off some of the color I just put down..and I do seal after every coat, I may be doing it wrong..lol

    40. I understand your pain!
My last faceup used seven colored pencils just for highlights and shadow details...
I know I will have to drop my white pencil and it hurts my artist's heart! ><

BUT we can DO THIS !!!

      • Cake Cake x 1
    41. Lol the white was the one that killed me too! At first I was thinking it would be so easy to use one color - eyebrows, eyes...ok - and then I realized I totally forgot lips. *sobs*

    42. @VampireAngel13 Ouch, yeah, you've got a tough decision ahead of you. I normally only use about three or four pencils, but if needed I think I could do with one...or at least I hope so since I'm kind of in this as well! >w<'

I actually know how to do lips without the need of a white pencil, so that's good hehe :sneaky

@Kitty Blue From my experience with that happening, it happened to me when I hadn't sealed the layers thoroughly. When I started being more careful and making sure I actually sealed every layer properly (and at least 3 times at the end), that's when it stopped for me. It could be that's what's happening for you as well ~

I also had trouble with the black "eyeliner" smudging when I put gloss on it, and it was the same thing: I had been too quick and I didn't have not enough layers of the sealer at the end :)

    44. Reminder: Please don't mention what sculpt you intend to use for your entry, even if it's in a question. This would disqualify your entry (before you have even started) because you are revealing information that can be used to identify your entry. If you are concerned about whether or not the doll is on topic, that question must be posted in Ask the Moderators.

    45. So no pearl or glitter powders, but is making powders from metallic or pearl coloured pastels okay? (I'm not sure this would even work, but I might try it if it's within the rules).

      • x 1
    46. Yes, that's fine ~

    47. I use the brush on method and I know that it doesn't need respiratory protection (which is why I use it), just as a heads up for why I don't own a mask.

    48. I had a lot of free time today, so I worked on my entry all day! I'm not sure it's anywhere near good enough to win, but I'm really really happy with how it turned out, so that's still a prize to me! <3

The restrictions do make it a challenge, but completing that feels so good! It's worth it, don't give up even if it's hard!

    50. Well this sucks...I don't use pastels. I only use diluted acrylics and colored pencils for my work. :/

I might have to try a single colored pencil for my work then...that -might- be doable... I hope.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    51. I wanted to join the sewing one this year as well because I suck at it and I don't do it much these days (due to old age), but I find a full outfit made out of socks a bit intimidating (I might still give it a try >_>;;.). This one is also a bit intimidating but I like the change of only using pastels, however, I don't use pencils for face ups. I used to use them as guides for eyebrow shapes in the old days, but for the past ten or more years I've only used pastels and acrylics (and occasional mica powders). So I have two questions: 1. Can we use the single watercolor pencil wet, and with a brush? 2. Since we can we use pastels, can we also use pastel pencils?

Thanks for the awesome job to all the Mods, and for always putting such amazing effort when creating all these inspiring contests year after year! Also thanks to all the companies and individuals who donate the wonderful prizes! I've never won any of them thus far, but they have inspired this lazy old bum to sew something new for my dolls in along while (last year at least, and two or three years ago as well).

Powders of any kind are not allowed, but you're free to turn the pastels into powder and use that for your faceup/tattoo/body blushing.

      1. Yes, that's fine.
      2. Those would count as a pencil, so you would only be able to choose one of them.

    55. Is it allowed to mix the the pastels with sealant instead of water? I want to try a technique without having to spray sealant.

Is it ok to photograph the finshed with a wig (that doesn't obscure the faceup, of course)?

And one more: The doll I want to paint on has a body blushing, but I only want to paint a faceup. Do I have to cover up the body/neck) for the photo?

Lots of questions, sorry, and Iprobably only want to enter for fun … :sweat

    56. No, you may only mix the pastels (and the pen) with water.

      Yes, a wig is fine.

Yes, you'll need to cover up the body if you don't plan on taking off the head to photograph it separately from the body :)

    58. So Just double checking that you can do a body and head, Is it ok to do partial body and head? or does the whole body have to be in photo?

    59. Do we only start a thread once we're ready to upload our pictures, or do we need to start a thread before hand so the mods know we're going to enter?

Also, what if we want to do a head and the body, but for fear of possibly not finishing the body can we post pictures of just the head, and then if the body gets done before the closing date we can update the pictures to include the body as well?
