      Briefly describe your entry's concept:
As the theme is Back to Basics, I chose to go with a gothic vampire beauty for two reasons. First off, I officially joined the hobby in 2008, when vampires, goths and scene/emo dolls were extremely popular, and my first two dolls were goth. Secondly, I wanted to take the single pencil rule to another level, and I also used only one pastel color as well: all black! Her entire faceup, body blushing, mani/pedi and vampire bite mark are all created using only a black pencil, black pastel, gloss and sealant.

      Entry type:
      faceup and body blushing

      Materials used:
      -black Faber Castell watercolor pencil
      -black Pan pastel
      -black Volks chalk pastel
      -Vallejo gloss
      -Zoukeimura Finishing Powder Spray

      Tools:
      -blank doll
      -paintbrushes
      -magic eraser
      -Q-tips
      -artist eraser
      -makeup sponge
      -pencil sharpener
      -eyelashes
      -scissors (for eyelashes)
      -Aleene's Tacky glue (for eyelashes)
      -Safety mask

Briefly describe your entry's concept: I wanted to use face tattoos to create something different from a traditional faceup, while still keeping it "basic" by using limited materials. I started with the butterfly wing, and expanded to a bug theme to make it more interesting.

      Briefly describe your entry's concept:
Taking into consideration the theme of this challenge, I wanted to do very minimal layers of color for this face up, but I still wanted a lot of detail, so I went with a semi-natural skin texture. Only used two layers of color using only pastels, water and brushes. I wanted to see what this sculpt would look like with a slightly stylized version of skin texture, because he is a white resin head sculpt. I didn't want to add too much color, or make it look cartoony. Basically, It is a very minimalistic textured face up.

Entry type: (faceup, tattoo, body blushing)
      Face-up

      Materials used:
Rembrandt soft Pastels, white pastel pencil, water, and MSC as fixative and primer. Tools used: Xacto knife to shave pastels, brushes, kneading eraser, cotton swab, a blending sponge, plastic palette with lid to mix shaved pastels in. 3M respirator, and safety googles.

      Briefly describe your entry's concept:
I went into the process of this face up with the intent on something dark, and slightly demonic looking but still more human like. I had no real concept in mind at the start and went with what I felt might be interesting to try since this was my second face up over all. I only knew I wanted to have the tears of blood included in the process.
Entry type: (faceup, tattoo, body blushing) Face up

      Materials used:
derwent black watercolor pencil, 6 different shades of Mungyo pastels. My sealant of choice is MSC and I used Liquidtex for gloss touches after i was done.

Briefly describe your entry's concept: I had chosen this sculpt to inspire pure nostalgia, an older sculpt that was much desired in the past. The face up was inspired by the artwork of Ayami Kojima.
Used layers of pastels to color-match to a different company's body.

      Entry type: Face up

Materials used: Pastels, Sealant and glue. (no pencil or gloss.)

Briefly describe your entry's concept: An Elder Scrolls style mer, living in a Shadowrun setting. Aka, a cyberpunk themed elf - with clan or in this setting cybernetic enhancements that double as gang tattoos, specifically snake-skin!

Entry type: face-up (head blushed to match much darker body)

      Materials used:

A silver watercolour pencil by Faber Castell, copious amounts of soft-pastels, MSC UV cut, Tamiya clear gloss, and of course a respirator with particulate and organic filters.

(I used a masking technique more commonly attempted with spraypaint, aka hobbyist sized masking tape, and painting on snake scales in liquid-masking (which I was convinced wouldn't work with the dry powders of soft pastels, but to my relief and surprise it held!), to achieve the crisp lines on the tattooed section of his face.)

      Briefly describe your entry's concept:
keeping with the back to basics theme, I chose a doll who was originally an LE release, wiped the faceup and blushing I'd had on him and replaced it with a more natural (for WS) look. This particular doll has never had a natural faceup before so this is a different look for him.

The tattoo is not a complicated design and uses the same color palate as the faceup and body blushing to fit the theme.

Entry type: (faceup, tattoo, body blushing)
      Faceup, tattoo and body blushing

      Materials used:
      pastels (color palate shown)
      notebook for pastels
      one watercolor pencil (blue-grey)
      gloss
      MSC
      brushes of varying sizes
palate for mixing pastels with water

      Briefly describe your entry's concept:
I wanted to do a white faceup on a tan doll, and I've always loved how striking white chrysanthemums are. This seemed like a perfect opportunity.

      Entry type:
      (faceup, tattoo, body blushing)
      Faceup

      Materials used:
I chose white for my single watercolor pencil, and my best quality one is a Derwent, so I opted for that one. For pastels, I used Myungo brand half-stick, and Blick Artist Pastels, which are my favorite brand of the many I've tried so far. I used Pan Pastels in Pearl White and Metallic Silver to get some sparkle. My sealant of choice is ZM Powder spray, especially when working on tan resin. For gloss, I used Mr Tamiya X-22. The little dropper bottle of water is to make sure I didn't ruin my Pan Pastels with too much water, but I ended up not needing it. And of course, can't do a face-up without a trusty mask! I have a half-face respirator with new P100 60923 combination cartridges, which block particulate as well as organic vapor/acid gas. Replace these cartridges regularly folks!

Briefly describe your entry's concept: This character a ghost; I wanted their faceup to reflect the darker theme of death while also showing their innocence, so I used a lot of blues, purples, and dark browns to juxtapose the soft pinks, and gave them some light freckles and a few moles. I chose a white pencil mainly because the sculpt has teeth, but also because I thought white hair and eyelashes/eyebrows would play well into the ghost theme.

Briefly describe your entry's concept: I began with the idea of simple things and starting over fand planned my design around the word "simplicity" and a quote from Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley - "The beginning is always today". As I was already going to have a non-natural look by using written words, I went for a full fantasy concept using shapes and drawings, but kept those drawings to a tree, a childs swing, a bird, stars, falling droplets and geometric shapes - they might not make for a simple design but I felt they fit the concept of a simple life.

      Entry type: faceup

Materials used: chalk pastels (including metallic pearl shades), purple watercolour pencil, water, MSC sealant, gloss, brushes, rubber shapers, cocktail sticks, cotton buds, eraser, masking tape.
