Angell-Studio Youth (58-61cm) and Charm (62-71cm) Discussion Vol. 2

Apr 6, 2013

    1. He looks amazing! I hope to get him too in the future to make company for my Cynthia :D

Angell Studio sent me pictures of the rouran girl face up (without butterfly) I asked for my solid butter Cynthia. I though she would be a little tall, but I don't think I'll mind it so much. Let's see when she finally arrives!

    4. @april I only just realized that AS now classifies the Leo sculpt as a "Senior" size (he was "Charm" size when I ordered mine), so I think I can help! 16mm are way too big for my guy - he looks pretty silly with them. 14mm eyes fit just fine (i.e. no gapping) and look much better in terms of iris size. I think 12mm would be perfect for iris size, but at that point you'd be getting gapping.

    5. Yeah, funny about the size category changes. I guess AS decided they had enough dolls to separate the tall boys into Charm and Senior...!

Great to know that 14mm eyes should work without gapping. I was thinking of ordering from Dollbakery since they had 14mm with small iris, but I didn't want to spend that much for an eye that would gap badly... Of course, now their sales period sold out! Maybe I'll catch them later, though... I still have many, MANY months to go on layaway. :sigh

But thanks so much for the info! It gives me a better idea of what to look for, eye-wise. :kitty2

The 16mm eyes AS uses in the official photos look a bit big to me... but I've always preferred smaller iris eyes in all my dolls--even the more anime style ones...

    6. Ahh that's so exciting!!!! Light blue eyes sounds like they'd go really well with him! :D its awesome you get to make a character from the story your writing!! I hope you post pictures when he arrives!:3nodding:

    7. Oooo, so pretty! AS does amazing work! Can't wait to see her all together:love (not to mention what you will do with your David :))

@villainedward I'm going to take SO many pictures! The waiting is killing me even more, now that I know he's so close to being ready *_* This will be the first time I have all the accessories ready and waiting before the doll arrives, so I'm itching to finally bring my character to life!

    8. Haha! so exciting! I read that you had a dark curly wig and blue eyes for him! I'm sure he'll look really handsome!
Also, the other night I drew him to see how I'd like him to be. I though a dark wig and bright blue or green eyes would look good on him, and then I came up with this:

    9. @Marina Roje Oooo, you're a good artist! Looks like your Cynthia is going to be a lucky lady :blush We should totally spam the doll world with our Davids, since I don't think I've seen any owner pics of him.

    10. @Fey Lady, absolutely! I haven't seen any owner pics either...It's a shame! He's really handsome-- David deserves some love!

    11. @Fey Lady I can only imagine the excitement and anticipation you have!!! Especially since you have everything ready for him! :blush I can't wait to see all the pictures when you finally get to being him to life!:chibi do you have other dolls waiting for him too??

@Marina Roje I love your drawing of your David, it really shows what you wanna go for!:D I agree with fey lady, your Cynthia is very lucky!

Also vouching for more pictures of David!!!:whee: will you both be giving them new names??

    12. @villainedward Ha ha, funny story: I don't know who's going to show up first--him or his companion! His name will be Damari, based on a story character of mine :) His companion is a girl named Reann. I have her body, but I'm still waiting on her head (she's a DollnDoll Loren)! Who will get to welcome who home?? Will they arrive simultaneously?? It's anybody's guess *_*

    13. I finally took my big guy out for some photos today in his new outfit and I just wanted to share my favourite shot:

      [IMG]Azure by Leah, on Flickr

      It was rather windy and it just caught the fabric and gave it some lovely motion. <3 Although, he did fall over backwards in the snow once. ^^;

    14. @keelerleah What a stunning photo ! He's beautiful **!

    15. Thanks!
Unfortunately though, here's what he looked like about 5 minutes after that shot. Since I had my camera on, I couldn't help but snap a shot of him laying in the snow. :sweat
      [IMG]
He's okay though. No snow damage. :)

    16. @keelerleah He wanted to rest a little~ He fell graciously lol
I'm glad there was no damage!! ^o^!

    17. @keelerleah -- He looks fantastic! --even in the fallen shot. :whee: Is that the Lan Ling outfit? The head-piece looks perfect with it. And the snow is a wonderful background.

    18. Ooooo, he's beautiful! Thanks for sharing :D Glad he recovered from his fall so quickly!

    19. Beautiful! I love that dress, too! :love

    20. I'm thinking on ordering an AS doll -- does anyone know if they declare the full value on the parcels they send?

Their website is one of the better ones for browsing their products, but it seems to be lacking in any policies/procedures or FAQs.

    21. They do underdeclare! In fact, I once had a problem with them underdeclaring too much (I asked them to declare $210 or so and they declared $25) and it caused me a lot of trouble, so if customs not believing what they declared is a concern for you, make sure they understand exactly how much you want them to put on their customs form. That said, they're very nice to deal with and my problem was an isolated incident so don't hold that against them! It's just a heads up.

    22. Thanks!

I've just sent them an email with some more questions about substituting body parts, it's nice to know that others have had good experiences with them too.

    23. Mel's new outfit arrived! Also, somebody a handful of months ago asked if there were any owners of Baron Samedi SP. I forget who (and who knows if they're still lurking around). But here's a quick driveby portrait of Mel in his new threads. :B

    24. Well, I just placed an order for Charlotte fullset. Customer service was excellent, polite, good English, and happy to answer any questions.

Now to play the waiting game. It's a terrible game :...(

    25. I just received the Charlotte outfit along with my Cynthia. You will not be disappointed, it is so beautiful and detailed! AS makes the best clothes (and dolls too) and they are so nice.

    26. Hello! I'm a newbie here. I'm hoping to make an Angell Studio Lan Ling my first doll. I'm working on my strategy for ordering him.
I really like the large dolls. I've found browsing around on multiple sites that I'm drawn to mature looking dolls and Lan Ling looks like he belongs in every great historical Chinese drama made.
Does anyone here already own one?

    27. Hi there, @PennyForTheGuy ! --I have a Lan Ling on order over at Mint On Card, but he's on LONG layaway, so I won't even get him paid off until late this year! I haven't see any arrivals yet. I know AS had some in stock and it's not listed any more, so someone somewhere has one! Maybe not anyone on DoA, though... And not everyone posts their dolls even if they're here...

I'm very excited about getting him (ages from now :(). Yes, he does remind me of Chinese dramas and historical films. I think it's that wig... which looks better on him than in the wig pictures... so I'm hoping it will look the same as in the photos! (It's that widow's peak, I think!) I'm getting the outfit and wig and shoes and faceup... not the mask. Also, getting him in pink skin, rather than yellow... (for some reason I get a little paranoid about yellowing, so I tend to want to have some pink in there rather than starting out yellow, although I LOVE how he looks in the photos in yellow).

I ordered from MoC rather than AS because MoC has a nice long layaway that is easy to do (they auto-charge my cc, although I have to give them approval first--but they email for that--so I don't have to remember to pay). It is also sometimes a little bit of a savings on shipping to order from a domestic agent.

    28. I hope he arrives to you quickly and in perfect condition. I actually did a bit of sniffing about online, looking for some inspiration to make a character for my doll.
He seems to be based off the historical figure Prince Lan Ling. He was a warrior prince who is famous as one of the four most beautiful men of ancient China. It was said his face was too beautiful to ever scare an enemy so he wore a horrifying mask in battle. Looking at the pictures of the doll and how its posed with a sword and demon mask it makes perfect sense that they based it off his legend.
Apologies if you already knew that.
As another tidbit 'Prince Lan Ling in Battle' is a very famous song and dance in China and Japan and was most popular in the Sui and Tang dynasties. I love a Chinese drama called 'Empress of China' with Fan Bing Bing and this dance played a rather important part in the series.
Just makes me want this doll more!

    29. I am looking forward to getting her. That dress is expensive enough, it's nice to know that it's well made too.

It's not often that I like multiple sculpts from the same company, but I really want to get Xiangling as well. The pictures on the AS website don't really speak to me, but on their Flickr she looks amazing.

    30. When I was checking around the internet, I found out about Lan Ling. There was a tv series about him... (also have been other related series). Prince of Lan Ling - Wikipedia

Seems like a good story--but sad, I think.

I was looking around for a good name for him, but I really like Lan Ling. Lan can mean blue, which is nice for him...

    31. I would love to see Charlotte photos! I've never felt that I have had a grail doll, but I think she's it. I just know I have to have her at some point! I've thought about trying to get her on taobao as a full set to save money, but I'm not sure how I feel about that. I am not sure if I want the new 58 in body or the old one. I sew a lot for my dolls, so I don't care for a very busty sculpt to sew for. Dina is already really challenging! I thought about using Taobao ring first to buy clothes as a test. I'm just not sure it's that much in savings after taobao fees and shipping. Also, what skintone is Charlotte in?

Awesome background on Lan Ling! Very inspiring!

    32. I've ordered mine in solid butter, which is the same as in the photos on AS's site. I got her with the "default hands" because I think the ones she is pictured with look awkward, and flat feet/jointed ankles instead of the high-heel feet.

I just had a look at their Taobao site -- the prices are less than half of their English site! There has got to be something in that somewhere. I've not shopped on Taobao before, I'd not risk $500 on my first time on a site that I can't read. It is kinda tempting though...

    33. Okay, I actually would want the flat feet too. Does anyone have both sets to change out? I can put the high heels on flat feet but it's not the same of course.
And sorry for the confusion, I meant using an agent. That adds their shipping and fees too, however. I've used taobao for lolita clothes and it didn't really save too much, but doll clothes should be much lighter to ship.
I never knew that you could ask for different hands. I still consider myself new to the hobby, so I forget about thinking about things like that!

    34. Could someone tell me what AS's resin quality is like? I've been eyeballing Kana and Cinderella for years and years - they were among the first dolls I found, actually - and I've decided to forgo my plans for a Volks mini in favor of one of them. I'm equally scared and excited, haha. AS's dolls are so very underrated, it seems.

    35. I think you have made a good decision! AS dolls are beautiful and very well made! The faceups are gorgeous. The resin quality and finish are wonderful!

    36. I have a volks and an Angell Studio. The solid butter is a beautiful color and great quality. I really actually feel the Angell Studio quality is nice because they don't leave visible seams. I think you'll be pleased!

    37. Thanks! Actually, I was wondering mostly about texture. Is there any tooth to AS's resin, or is it smooth? I like resin that has a bit of tooth to it. Oh, and I'd like some Cinderella spam, too!

    38. Its also very thick and durable. My AS dolls have taken scary far without a scratch.
