What is your job and other hobbies?

Jun 11, 2019

    1. I've seen "how old are you?" And "would you take your doll to work?" And also "what are your other hobbies?". But I am intensely curious if there is a common trend between jobs and bjd hobbyists.

I'm an engineering student/anime geek/video game nerd. Soon I'll be an engineer (probably automotive but who knows). And while other people at work can talk anime and video games, nobody ever knows anything about bjd's.

    2. Hello! I'm a cook for an assisted living and I have brought a doll or two to work, previously, but kitchens can get messy. I like reading, admiring flowers (bc I can't grow them too well!!), puzzles, painting.

      • x 4
    3. I'm a Young Adult Librarian at a public library. I would never take my dolls to work. I wouldn't trust the public around them. I like reading, building models (gundam), anime, and crafting.

    4. Heyo! I'm kinda similar in the anime nerd category. I'm pursuing a pre veterinarian degree while working as a wedding videographer.

I can't really take my doll's to work, surprisingly videography is a lotta running around, I try to take them to anime cons when I can make it out to them though.

    5. Interesting question, thank you for asking! I'm an electrical engineer. I code engineering software so my work is less stressful than most engineers out there.

My husband and I travel whenever we can and I spend much of my spare time planning these trips, but is that a hobby? I don't know. :XD: I do like travel photography.

I only discovered BJDs last year, I think this is my first true hobby. I have shown my dolls to a few engineer colleagues and friends, who are all men (alas I hardly know women in this field). They are surprisingly interested and supportive. They mostly want to improve the posing and mechanize the doll.

    6. I’m a graduate student. I could probably bring my doll to certain parts of “work,” but it’s a wet lab, so there’s a chance the doll would be exposed to carcinogens or other gross stuff, so I probably wouldn’t, and later, when I return as a med student, I doubt they’d be welcome in a hospital (or that I’d want to expose people to whatever was on them—my apartment is solid cat hair).

My other hobbies are sewing, felting, embroidery, wigmaking, etc.—other crafting hobbies mostly.

    7. I'm a college professor, and when I was chair of another department I did take a doll to the office now and then -- it was a very creative, friendly bunch of people. Current department, not so much.

Hobbies . . . knitting, music (piano, bassoon, shape-note singing), gaming, readingreadingreading.

    8. Librarian, computer and information scientist, hobby hopper...

    9. My last job was managing a postal store, now I’m currently unable to work and subsidize my bjd hobby with my Etsy shop. My ‘work’ Is at home, so yeah, my dolls are with me all the time. If I had a regular job, I wouldn’t take my bjds. They are safer at home.

I also like gardening (raising cactus and succulents), dollhouse miniatures ( working on a dollhouse right now), and just doing crafts in general.

    10. I'm an aspiring writer currently working as a chat representative for a bank. Theoretically, I could bring my dolls to work, but I 1) don't trust my coworkers around anatomically correct dolls, 2) don't trust my anyone I don't know well around my expensive things, and 3) I'm not exactly sure if it's allowed as I work in a secure center and I'm not even allowed to have an opaque drink container for fear of it containing some sort of recording device.

My hobbies include writing, RP-ing, leatherworking, video games, and discovering new and fun ways to be completely exhausted.

    11. I work as a compliance officer in a credit union. When I worked in the branches, I think I brought a doll in with me for Halloween one year, but not yet to my new job.

Other hobbies include crochet, quilting, video games, going to the beach, and sleeping.

I'm one of the few mechanical engineering girls in my class. I understand your struggle.

    13. A an accounting student, but actually want to have my own store. I bring my doll to school sometimes but never leaves his bag. Other Hobbies: junk journals, sewing, felting, videogames. minitures Oh and plush collecting (recently got my first Charlie bear "sly")

    14. I'm an English graduate student and writing instructor. My hobbies besides dolls are needlework, otome games, and manga. I stay private about my hobbies at work and school, though I will talk about video games or manga if I learn other people like them.

    15. I'm a medical laboratory scientist. I work in a hospital lab, so no bring-your-doll-to-work day for me. XP
I'm also into collecting anime figures and model kits, sewing/crafting/sculpting/jewelry design (3D crafty stuff), drawing/painting on occasion, and newly into gardening. XD

    16. I work at a deli. My goal is to go back to school for a fiber arts/general arts degree. Hobby wise I just love crafting. Sewing, polymer clay, epoxy resins are the main things I play with, but I dabble in a few other things. Doll wig making is next on my list to try. I also love anime/manga, reading, baking, and fishkeeping. Gardening is also on my list, but till I have a home of my own im stuck with pots.

    17. I’m a pharmacy technician! :D I would probably not take them to work. I’ve brought them on off days before, but that was just to show a coworker who’s also in the hobby! Edit: whops forget to mention that I am aiming to go back to school for space science!

Outside of dolls I’m an artist, mostly with character design, and a sort of writer. I love comics, both western and manga, and my other big hobby is horror movies.

    18. Hello everyone! I work as an Activity Therapist/Recreational Therapist at a behavioral health/mental health hospital. I run therapy groups for people dealing with heavy mental health, physical health, addiction, and life issues. I'd probably never bring my dolls to work, like a few others said I do not trust the public around them and it would just be too many questions. My other hobbies include horseback riding, drawing, painting, doll customizing, anime, and the occasional video game! I also have lots of pets which is probably the biggest hobby of mine.

      • x 8
    19. I’m a musician and teacher. :) I don’t usually bring dolls to work as I’m generally active and focused the entire time.

I also make art and garden in my spare time.

    20. Wow, seems like a lot of people are librarian!!!! XD That's what I want to be, but for now I'm doing some marketing before deciding to maybe go back to school again for mlis.

I also like and play otome games XD

    21. I'm currently a student, so I suppose that would be my occupation! While I was doing online school, I technically had my dolls with me all the time, but next school year I'm going to a brick and mortar school, so I probably wouldn't bring my dolls unless there was an event or something. I'm sure the students there would be quite interested however, as it's an art-focused school (I'm going to be in their Visual Arts department). I know I also have a friend there who likes bjds, but isn't in the hobby.

As for my other hobbies, they include watching anime, reading manga, Dungeons and Dragons, drawing, resin crafts, sewing, video games, and cosplay. For nearly all of these hobbies, I watched as an "outsider" at first before finally taking the plunge, which also was how I got into bjds. When I was younger, my interests tended to jump around more, but now they're a lot more stable, which makes me more confident about investing larger amounts of money into them.

    22. I'm a 2D animator and I'm working for a game company at the moment. I'm also a commission artist during my free time (I'd love to consider this as my part-time job lol).

As for other hobbies... hmm gaming is definitely one of them (heavy Overwatch and World of Warcraft player here; also enjoy indie games like Night in the Woods, Abi and Journey), and I sometimes do woodworks and play the cello.

    23. I am a seasonal worker. Basically, I do temp jobs out in the field, gathering data and restoring the environment. Way too rough a place for a doll, and an SD would be a pain to hike out to a site only to get banged up/roasted by sun/wet. Right now I'm too nervous to even bring my tiny because even if she only stayed in the car and tent, it is getting so hot.

I also write and draw. I tend to rotate them. Right now I am on a dolly and writing kick and I haven't drawn in ages. I also like cooking and baking when I can, traveling, tabletop games, reading, and watching cartoons.

    24. I'm a concept artist, and I work in games! My team is a fantastic and creative bunch, but I'm too shy to bring dolls to work. I do show them pictures sometimes!

Besides BJD, I love watercolor and video games. I really like to collect, swatch, and compare different paints by different manufacturers. Meanwhile Super Metroid, Megaman (classic), and Pokemon are my favorite games/series, and I'm currently still playing Hollow Knight. I'm very bad at it : D

    25. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom and I run a small business out of my house, selling doll stuff and secondhand finds on eBay and Etsy, so my dolls are "at work" with me every day :) They model a lot of the things I sell, too.
My hobbies besides dolls are writing, crafting, crocheting, and video games.

    27. My job title is sales and customer manager, but that isn't really my "final" job since I study law. I'm in B2B sales, and we do homepages, Google ads and Facebook ads. My hobbies include writing, reading, plants and art. I've never brought a doll to work and probably never will, I'd be just too nervous about the curious people and leaving to bathroom lol. I've shown them pictures however so they have technically seen my dolls.

    28. Currently, I’m a part-time high school ESL teacher, part-time mom. Dolls are my biggest hobby right now, much to the dismay of my husband (and delight of my daughter), but I also sew, read, and love to travel.

    31. Not the first game dev I see! I'm a character artist for video games. I mostly work on realistic first person shooters. I was nervous to take my dolls in to work when I first started at my studio because the game I worked on was very hetero-dude-centered, but it turned out that all the guys I worked with were big sweethearts and they thought the dolls were neat. One of the environment artists even painted a mini-machina!

I took my dolls in on my birthday and my first seat mate was really quiet all day, turns out he's terrified of dolls but because they made me happy he didn't want to say anything. He was such a nice guy! After I moved desks I brought in one of my BJDs and several of my 1/6th customs to girl up the place. The guys were all super nice but between our game's subject matter and my coworkers it was quite the sausage fest.

Making dolls is kind of a hobby/business for me? I really enjoy it and it's nice to come home and use my skills to build whatever I want instead of what my Art Director says I have to make. I also write and draw a comic when I have time and I like to find old furniture and repaint it. I listen to audiobooks at work since I don't have as much time to read a physical book any more. :(

I love how that's the most frequent thing we all have in common! We all love reading!

    32. I’m a writer and housewife due to be promoted to stay-at-home mum any day now. My previous jobs took place in barns and stables, an upholstery shop manned by a grouchy chainsmoker, and an office that frequently saw dogs, a pig and a goat trotting through. I can’t say I ever felt the urge to bring a doll along. :huh?:

I also play a few instruments, I sew and I enjoy video games. Once an avid horseback rider; eager to get back to it as soon as baby permits.

    33. I'm a captionist! I provide real-time captions for folks who need them. It's a desk job, but I don't bring any dolls because I prefer not to have distractions and admittedly I just don't like to take them too far out of the house. I've brought doll clothes to work on when I have downtime, though!

As for hobbies, I'm an illustrator and character designer! I also write (horribly!), and spend an... unfortunate amount of time playing video games. :sweat Recently I've been spending a lot of time taking care of my pet rats... pet ownership doesn't seem like a hobby, but these guys require a lot of time and attention and my mind is constantly on them.

    34. Job: I am an assistant at the Embassy of Japan culture center, mainly responsible for promoting Japanese culture (including anime sometimes!) I also design the publications and flyers for the Embassy events which as an artist is part of my interests as well.
Hobbies: I am an artist, I love drawing, coloring, character designing and sometimes digital drawing. I also write stories and currently working on a big novel project.
Do I bring dolls to work? I only own SD size bjds so its impossible to take to work! But I bring non bjd fashion dolls like barbie, EAH, or azone dolls, sometimes I assign a different doll each week, they inspire me and help me through stressful moments at work.

    35. I am a special education teacher and have been put in charge of developing our school S.T,E.M curriculum (I have a background in I.T from about 19 years ago that apparently makes me qualified for this project). I don't really have any other hobbies. I work a lot, and now I am obsessed with BJDs so that pretty much consumes me.

I want to do my doctorate in the future, but right now my career is going in a direction I don't want it to (I.T) and I need to get over that and move it back into the right direction (Autism research and best classroom practice).

    36. Hey! Same here! I feel like it I brought a doll to work I'd just abandon it to the lab. It touched the lab counter; it's never coming home.

    37. Due to my illness, I'm unfit for work and live of a pension. I'm having a hard time doing nothing, though, so when I'm able, I sculpt, and I'm hoping to build a tiny career out of that. I've build my own website, sell my works online and I'm planning to do some expositions and contact galleries when I've finished the two pieces I'm working on right now. It's a slow business: Every year or two a new sculpture is released. I'm not exactly prolific XD.

As for hobbies: I love books, board games, embroidery, tabletop roleplaying, video games, among other things.

    38. I work in screenprinting! I’m the general sales manager. I wouldn’t take Aeron to work, though, too much ink about to accidentally smear her with. I looked down at my hands and I have a huge smudge of gold metallic ink that I have no idea how it got there.

My hobbies are drawing, dancing, reading, writing, and video games. I actually have a background in critical film and television theory and upload reviews to a website of fellow university alumni every now and then.

      • x 4
    39. I write from home, so technically I don't take my dolls to work. :P

I adore textile arts like sewing, knitting and embroidery, and I enjoy making and collecting miniatures. Other hobbies include anime, food shows/movies, reading and historical geekery.

    40. Oh, my brother works at the Embassy of Japan as well :D

I, on the other hand, work as a translator/interpreter in a Japanese automotive company. I also teach Japanese in a language school. Plus, I'm trying to finish my PhD, so my research topic is partially my hobby as well (it's all about the language used in manga).

I have a couple of doll-related hobbies (photography, very bad sewing, jewelry making, and OC design and writing). I also read, watch 19th century period dramas (this week a Russian supernatural crime drama is my favourite), practise iaido and always long to travel (why have one expensive hobby if you can have two! :D).

    41. I'm a highschool Science's teacher, though currently unemployed, and I don't think I would take any of my dolls to the work environment. But now that I think about it, a diorama with my anthro dolls could be a cute idea for the World Environment Day xD

My other hobbies are videogames and writing (I dream of being good enough to have one of my books published one day).

    42. I'm currently working in a hospital Nutrition Services department either working the tray line or taking calls. I am about to get my degree, so I'm praying this will change soon.

As for other hobbies, I play video games, draw, write, read, hike, and ride horses. I am slowly getting into LArp (though the area has some less than stellar options) and cosplay. I also do a little bit of gardening.

      • x 2
    43. I tutor Japanese at a university, and work at cinemas during the holidays and on weekends. I'd love to have my dolls with me, but the room I rent is a little too small, and I would't want to keep them in the office! Far too much direct sunlight.

My hobbies are drawing, writing, reading, video games, anime and manga... I go to the gym a lot? I like to roleplay, D&D and board games

    44. Right now I'm in shipping and receiving, but I've been an antiques dealer for about 15 years now! I used to work in an antiques co-op, but now I just freelance deal where and when I can.

Aside from that I'm a watercolorist (I do have a degree in illustration, and have professionally freelanced), writer/editor, aaand of course I'm way into videogames, lol. I also fiddle with planted aquariums and raising upright pitcher plants!

Technically I could keep a doll with me at this new job, since I have my own desk and all but...I KNOW my coworkers would pick on me!

    45. I'm a university of fine arts graduate; currently working as an online invigilator, author and comic artist/illustrator (hey, don't judge, wages in Greece are so bad that wanting to live and not just survive off of scraps living in your parents' basement means you -have- to have more than one job :P Plus these dolls won't dress themselves.) I can bring my dolls to work, and I've done so on a few occasions (if I'm working before or after a meetup for example). My coworkers were completely enchanted!

My non-doll hobbies include gardening, cooking, reading (literature, manga), watching anime, playing videogames, making videogames, photography, and collecting a small amount of (moveable) figures, mostly nendoroids and kits you have to build yourself (like gunpla and megami device).

    46. Im in adminstration. I work for a wine and spirts distrbution wearhouse. I take my dolls to work, lots of people have different toys and items on their desks. I do take them with me when I leave the office though for lunch for fear of grabby hands. Most people dont bother me about them. Other hobbys? None really at the moment, I collect build a bears too, and ive allways done photography and modled on occasion. Sometimes I cosplay. Thats really it! Oh I watch a ton of movies and im into vintage fashion. Ok, so a lot of hobbies. lol.

    47. I was a game artist (world-building, mostly) at EA and Blizzard for fifteen years. Then taught Montessori middle school math for eight. I'm starting a new job teaching SpEd in elementary this September. I'm old. :)

Hobbies... RPG games (both online and tabletop), reading, drawing, sewing. Dolls are kinda where all my hobbies meet together into one!

I've never brought a doll to work. I used to be the only woman in my building, and didn't want to show any "girly" signs. Now I work mostly with conservative women, and am trying to hard to look "Normal and Professional," so all hobbies stay at home. I also had to stop dying my hair blue. Sigh. Getting old sucks, and I'm not one who can rock the goth look at 50. Sigh.

    48. i’m a puppet builder that primarily makes armatures for stop motion animation! i also do a lot of work with animatronics.

i have brought dolls to work a lot to use the resources available at the shop for mods, furniture/stand building, and other messy things that i would rather not do at home. occasionally i will bring a doll to keep me company, but not often, because there are a lot of ways to ruin something in the building.

as for hobbies, like so many here i’m a big anime/manga fan! i like to draw, sculpt, garden, make ceramics, and do housekeeping stuff (if that counts as a hobby? i just really like home improvement!)

the guys i work with are the same way! every time i get a new doll we un-string it and completely analyze what works, what doesn’t, better fabrication techniques, etc. we have also talked about building a resin doll/stop motion puppet hybrid, or some kind of animatronic doll!

i used to keep fish! everything from tropical community tanks to single species tanks of ranchu goldfish. what kind(s) of tanks do you have?

    49. I'm in the tech realm! I do API Support for a household-name company; essentially I provide support to programmers who are trying to connect to our services/servers/data.

My other hobbies include baking, food photography, succulents, videogames, and drawing. :)

At my previous company (I did technical support, but specialized in API support), my coworkers were all quite young and pretty nerdy, so I did bring one of my dolls to work once! It was very laid back and we had nerf guns to shoot eachother with and beer on Fridays, so it really wasn't farfetched to bring a 'toy' to work. I also had a coworker that I gifted a custom Monster High doll to.

At my current company people are very accepting, but it's a more professional atmosphere so I don't think I'd bring my dolls in! I do keep some POP figures on my desk though.

    50. I'm thrilled to have so many responses and to learn more about the other people in this hobby! I love how diverse everyone's careers are, yet we still all love this cool, niche hobby.

    51. I worked for Blizzard Entertainment for a while, then worked for Marsh & McLennan Companies, an insurance broker most people have never heard of even though they've been around since 1902 because they only work with businesses/corporations, as a Certificate Specialist (My second favorite job I've ever had, first being Camp Counselor at a Girl Scout Camp back in my teens). Now I own my own U-haul Dealership (of all things) and plan on opening up a Game and Hobby shop with my husband in the near future.

I do art on the side. And paint dolls? Its not ...NOT BJD related, but I consider it more of a hobby within a hobby. A Sub-hobby?

    52. Hey :D

I am doing a vocational training at the moment to become a nursery school teacher :3

I am also a gaming and anime nerd who loves to draw and likes to cosplay from time to time :3

so yeah ... you could describe me as a kind and creative person ^-^

    55. I'm a photographer and work from home, I never take the doll out when I'm working, mainly because she is too shy and would be likely to wonder off when I was busy. But she does enjoy posing in front of the camera when I allow it. She needs a few more modelling lessons before she can show off in any pictures tho, she can be a little difficult at times.
My hobbies include travel, sewing, sketching, watercolour painting and all things creative. Dolly is a shopaholic and spends all my money!

    56. I make bespoke gowns for bridal and formal wear. Besides dolls and sewing I like to swim, hike, and kayak. I also love fashion history and historical novels.

    57. I'm a baker in a convenience store. I have quite a funny story about this actually. I was messaging someone in the hobby I've been following for years, and I apologized for messaging her so early in the morning. She said it was alright because she had to get up early for work anyway. I said me too! Where do you work? Turns out we do the exact same job for the same convenience store xD I was laughing so much when she told me.

As for hobbies... at the moment bjds are definitely my main hobby. And sewing/crafting as an extension of that. I also enjoy writing, reading (particularly YA fiction) and wandering around the countryside (I hesitate to call this "hiking" xD).

    58. Hey everybody! Interesting mix of jobs here =)
I am a dress maker for a designer and a nude model for art classes. I guess this is why I'm more inclined to love fashion bjd's. My hobbies revolver a lot around fashion, drawing. But I love music and dancing <3
