The ideal size for me is about 60 cm, but in fact all my dolls are a bit higher. To my mind 60 cm dolls are perfect, they are high and heavy enough but not too heavy so I feel really comfortable with them.
If you had asked me this question a month or so ago, I would have said 1/6/tiny mature dolls were my go-to because that's all I've had. Then I got my first MSD, the new Chaeri you see in my icon. And a piece of my heart I never knew existed fell in love.
I started out with MSD size and really like them but fell in love with SD. I enjoy taking photos of them the most, despite the fact that the size is counter intuitive to portability for the outdoors. Also as a somewhat beginner at sewing it’s a lot more fun and easy to sew for my SDs.
I feel exactly the same. I much much prefer sewing for SDs and I find it much easier than sewing for smaller sizes. I have only SDs in my collection at the moment. I would like an MSD but I am not sure which one I will get.
Originally I fell in love with SD size dolls (I think SD molds are usually the ones I like the most and feel comfortable handling) and own only SD dolls. However, currently I live in tiny apartment, which is why SD size started to feel slightly too big and this size is a bit uncomfortable (heavy to carry, hard to transport) to take outside. However, I would still say SD is my favourite size, but I want to get also some smaller dolls in the future.
My first doll was 70cm+ and while he’s beautiful and I love him, he’s so big and so heavy! I don’t truly have the space for him and he’s a pain to change outfits. I knew immediately my next doll had to be MSD sized. When I got him, that size was perfect for me! I have fun carrying him around and putting him on my desk while I work. I’m wondering if I’ll ever want anything smaller. My next doll I have on order is an SD. I’m worried I’ll think he’s too big too. I guess we’ll see.
I'm definitely a fan of MSD sizes the most, because they're small enough to not take up a ton of space but big enough to be fun to customize
My favourite is Tiny and YOSD because I like taking pictures with miniatures and furniture. The small size is easy to handle and doesn't take up too much space.
I still can't say which size is my favorite. It's a little sad because I feel my budget gets too spread out. The cute aesthetic certainly has my preference so I'm going to say I like 1/12 and 1/6 the most. They're usually childlike and adorable. I own a few 1/3 dolls but they seem to get less attention because due to their build (feminine curves and ample chest) they tend to edge closer to the 'sexy' spectrum than the 'cute' despite my best efforts to dress them in concealing cute outfits. I can't say the bigger size has more presence that the smaller ones. I find my tinies have way more attitude and their face-ups seem more detailed as well.
My favorite size is SD. I have a few MSD, but to me, they seem more like dolls. SDs to me seem more like little people. They have a "presence," they have heft to them and its easy to sew clothes for them. Finding things for them is easier too. Sure, my 70cm dolls also feel like that, but they get heavy when carrying them around. SDs don't seem to become heavy as fast. Also, they look really angry...uh, cute sitting in the baby seat of a shopping cart! Ryu
My current fave are SD 65-70cm I hope to get an 80cm boy one day .. though I have this small MSD boy(smaller than the rest of my MSD’s) that I love so much cause I can stuff him Inside my bags haha
I have a few large dolls and one tiny, and I've actually got a lot of enjoyment out of the tiny one. It's easy to take out and keep on my desk with me, easy to find props and make displays, etc. It's made me interested in trying a mini or mature mini for my next doll.
I like mainly YOSD size cause they are quite esay to get clothes and i find it's size confortable when I hold it. Also I don't find MSD bad, Just a little big. 2024 update: After getting three MSD sized dolls and one YOSD, I would say I adore both sizes! They are quite practical to dress and take pictures with. ^.^
MSD is my favorite size for dolls. All sorts of items that fit there size out in the market. Endless amounts of wigs available in any color, but that's just the technical stuff. I love MSD's best because of the great range of sculpt styles. More boyish to manly man, mature to girly. That range is important when wanting characters all in the same world around the same size.
Best size is MSD for me. The scale is pretty easy to handle, for me they’re exactly my hand size dolls. They’re not too small or too big. Usually clothes and other stuff are cheaper too. I just like it!
I think I would have to go for MSD or mature 1/6. They are the easiest to find props & clothes for! Though my 60cm girl is nicer for hugs + she sits in my lap perfectly! I guess it depends on what you like in a doll, but to me I really love going out and finding accessories my dolls can use! So that's why I'd probably prefer MSD and 1/6.
My favourite size is SD - 65 cm. I'm sarting to warm up to 70 cm dolls. SDs turned out to be perfect for sewing clothes in compare with smaller dolls. The difference is huege, in my opinion. But it wasn't always like this, at all. I liked only MSDs and smaller dolls and was very afraid to buy bigger one because the risk of disliking him after he arrives was too big for me. Dolls are pricey, so if it's not 100% love, I don't buy. Than I made some character plans, but wasn't able to find sculpts I needed among MSDs...so I procrastinated and procrastinated. It changed only after I visited art doll event where I was able to see large dolls in person.
SDs 58-70cm+ all the way for me. I'm quite the opposite of most people: Tinies are too tiny (and often very child-like/babyish), MSDs are a decent size, but I can't for the life of me seem to bond with them all that well, and anything smaller than those...I'm sure my cat would think they're her toys. Or they're just too much like action figures to me (might as well just get action figures at that point, because restringing those channels are certain to be a nightmare...) SDs, on the other hand, are easier to get/make clothing for, do faceups on, have a heft to them (so not as easy to overlook as their smaller brethren can be), are more likely to offer more mature sculpts (which is my jam, and in a size I can work with. Painting realistic details on a Barbie sized head is difficult, and a nightmare....), and are just overall easier for me to bond with. I've never really been fond of youthful/childlike dolls or very wide eyes, and SDs have more variety of the more mature, narrower eyed beauties I'm seeking. Plus, I'm more drawn to maturish, hot guys, and the majority of them are somewhere in the 65-70cm+ range So, yeah: not YoSD, tinies, or MSDs for me. SDs all the way!
Since the moment I started in this hobby, I knew clearly that MSD was my top limit in size because I find SD size to overwhelmingly huge. In that time, I also was afraid of dolls smaller than Yo-SDs because I found them too fragile or whatever. Nowadays, 20-28cm range (tiny to Yo-SD) seems the perfect size for me. Very light and easy to carry anywhere. Plus they don't use much space in the cabinet so it's a win-win situation.
I originally wanted a MSD or 1/4 size doll, since anything bigger seemed a bit extravagant for me. But that was before I started actually shopping, and a lot of sculpts and body types I found that I wanted were 58+... so I bought a SD13 telling myself I will go no larger. BUT... I ended up purchasing a SD17 size shortly after ^^;; I love both, but I think overall, SD13 is my favourite just because the size isn't too small or too big, it's lighter, and there's just something about hugging them that feels really nice, that I probably wouldn't have gotten with a MSD. Also clothes option are a thing :'D
I love my dolls big! The bigger the doll the easier it is to sew for , kinda feel like cheating sometimes. I love the way big dolls look but they are very hard to carry around to interesting photography locations. Taking my 1/3 into Disney is already extremely stressful, I couldn't imagine doing it with a 75cm. I'm ok with smaller dolls as long as they are proportional to my big dolls.
I love the 40 cm chubby baby size, that is my mum's favourite size too. Not too big but not too small and I like that they have shorter legs, I find some of the SD and MSD sizes have really long legs!
I love the 1/3 size since carrying them gives the feeling of an adorable baby. And 1/3 dolls are the best when it comes to dressing up thanks to the details of 1/3 clothes.
I love my larger dolls primarily because of their sculpts, but if we're specifically focusing on the size aspect, I'd say 58-62cm is my favorite range because I find them easy to carry about and do things with while also being easier to paint/restring/clothe than the fashion size.
I have both SD snd MSD girls. I love my SD girls for their clothes especially. I play with them more since I can change their clothes more often. It is harder for me to change the buttons on my MSD ones. My fingers don't work so well now days. I love the size of my MSDs. I can take them with me easier when I go to meetings and conventions. So, I love them both for different reasons. I also have some 1/6 and 1/12 ones. I like my smallet ones for the characters they are but only for that.
Can I have the best of both worlds? I adore MSD sizes for their portability but SD and especially 70cms for their look. There's something about bigger dolls that just do it for me. The downside for them would be the difficulty of bringing them around.
I really like MSDs since they are aren’t too big and are easier to transport. Maybe down the road I might get an SD since they are so many gorgeous ones, but their price and size right now wouldn’t work due to limited space. I also really like small dolls like pet BJDs since they’re so cute and can be little companions for my characters.
I love 1/6 and smaller dolls. I'm not sure about bigger dolls. They're kinda intimidating. But my tiny dollies are so cute
My favorite size is MSDs, which is kinda sad because SDs are definitely what works best for my characters I also much prefer the clothing options for SDs, the wider variety of realisme and the opportunities for height differences. But MSDs are just so much easier to handle
I like dolls between the sizes of 58 cm to 60 ish cm for females and 65 cm to 75 cm for males. My reasoning is the dolls I like tend to be in these sizes, the dolls in these sizes looks more to my liking, it's easier to find clothing that I like in these sizes, I like bigger dolls, the details if the larger dolls seem better, etc. Something about the smaller sizes remind me of non-jointed dolls which for some reason bothers me. I do have smaller size dolls and a doll that is 105 cm. I don't know what I was thinking when I got the 105 cm doll from Luts. I was curious about the size and the photo of him holding the regular sized dolls was so funny I just wanted one.
1/8 is my favorite size. I have 3 YOSD size too but I find more variety of clothes that fit 1/8. There is a lot of YOSD size clothes but they are commonly too loose for Littlefee size. Another reason I like them is they take up less space so there’s room for more.
I love my 1/3 dolls but boy are 1/4 so much easier to handle and dress. I'd be hard pressed to say which I prefer more though.
My favourite doll size is kind of an odd one, there aren’t that many BJD artists making it. It’s a slightly larger YoSD-sized doll with an SD-sized head (or a stockier short MSD with an SD-sized head). iMda and a couple other smaller artists make them, with a few “random” ones peppered here and there from the larger outfits. They’re small enough that they don’t take too much space, fairly easy to dress (at least, in dresses… they tend to have a booty), they have large eyes and heads that allow for more detailed face-ups and more beautiful detail in the eyes, and they wear a standard-sized SD wig so there’s a lot of options for styles. I think it’s the perfect size, honestly, and I’m kinda sad there’s only a few places they can be found. My second favourite size is MSD-sized dolls. A little bigger, allows for more detail, but still very easy to transport and store. I think up to 50 cm is a good size. I love the looks of the 50+ cm dolls but they are just too big, expensive, and hard to store.
It's so hard for me to pick a favorite between my MSDs and my SD boy, because on one hand the MSDs are the perfect size to play with, but on the other, I LOVE the weight of my SD boy. (He's technically closer to 70cm.) It's like having a weighted blanket over my arm when I hold him and I love it.
Including a couple of dolls on their way, apparently, it's a size I call "Micro" which is anything smaller than a Yo. Fully half my collection (28) falls into this and includes Realfees, Pukifees, Pukipukis, all the way down to a Dream High studio Frezia and a Daisy Dayes monkey. Second place would be MSDs at 15. Then 9 YOs and 8 SD/SSDs.
1/6 is my favorite due to being at the height of most bookshelves (where I put my dolls) and portability, although I think 1/4 is becoming my favorite due to being able to better feel their personality.
I initially began focussing on MSD size, because they were a size I felt best fit into the artistic displays I was wanting to create. That worked well for awhile, but eventually my imagination began to think up other display concepts that could accommodate other sizes…like a treehouse I made from a discarded bit of tree trunk that was perfect for Realpukis, or a blank dresser-top that was big enough to house an SD. So I slowly began to add other sizes as my spaces for them grew. Today I have a home tastefully peppered with lovely displays and every size of doll imaginable to fill them. It’s a little like wandering through a fantasy world populated with fascinating characters. What a wonderful way to live!
Msd are my favorite it use to be sd but I have very limited space in my room and they take up a lot of room. It’s also just easier to handle and take them out
SD10/SD13 is definitely my favourite, specifically more immature 1/3 scale dolls. In general I prefer 1/3 size. I also like SDM size and chubby MSD.
I prefer the MSD size because it is more convenient and easier to handle. Although my favorite dolls are SD (AIL alice, chloe and dollmore mio)
I only got 75boys and 68boys, I love 75 but I prefer 68 more than 75. Cause it’s lighter than 75 and got more choices for clothes. Yeah, and better mobility.
I wrote an answer back in the original thread! (now archived) I much prefer 1/3s in the 58-65cm range. I love their weight, presence and their age aesthetic, but they aren't unwieldy (and heavy) like the 70+cm ones. There is something to be said about the lightness and compactness of minis, but I started the hobby buying 60cm dolls and had already gotten used to that size, so the minis were just too small for me. 10 years later I still feel the same - 58-65cm is such a sweet spot, although I'm open to taller dolls up to 70cm. I guess I've settled in the hobby and am reluctant to embrace change now.
My favorite dolls are all in the 58 to 63cm range. The original SD sizes. I own one girl who is 65cm and she just seems too big for me. I often fall in love with the face sculpt of a doll and then find out they are 70cm and taller, which spoils it for me, because I would never buy a doll that big. My original crew were SDs and a couple of YOSDs which I considered the children of my SDs. But then in 2019 I got my first MSD, a Minifee Karsh, and during the pandemic lockdown I went a little crazy from boredom and bought several more minifees and other MSDs. I do love those dolls, but I can't fit them into the same stories as my SDs, so they occupy a universe all their own.
My favorite are MSD’s! I agree with many above who have mentioned that size feeling like a “sweet spot”. I’m in a small shared apartment so having larger dolls and not having anywhere to either store or display them would be difficult. MSD’s can easily live on a shelf without it feeling like too much.
I really like the 40-49 cm dolls because my first bjd falls in this category and her size feels perfect to me.
1/3, 60 to 72cm range, because of all the detail that can go into their clothing. I had to buy Japanese doll clothing books to learn how to make the 1/6 and 1/12 size range clothing. It's a whole different process. To my thinking, 1/3 is capable of carrying the weight of more fabric types.
1/6 the 26ish to 30ish cm range. I like them because they don't take up too much space but big enough to not be too hard to restring, dress, or change the eyes. Additionally I gravitate toward cute/unrealistic styles which seems to mesh well.
I like big girls! Currently, my largest is a 65 cm Impldoll, but I want bigger! Yes, a Dollmore Trinity is on the wish list.. I will say that 1/4 scale is easier to pose, but I just like the presence of big dolls, the space they take up, and their weight. Sure they're harder to carry around, but I still love them. I envy all the boy doll collectors, with their 70-80 cm bodies. Where's my 75 cm girl? Then again, my ultimate goal is to get a 1:1 scale doll, leave it in the living room, and let it scare the guests...
I like 1/6 size, within about 30ish cm range. I have very, VERY limited space so I just can't collect big dolls. I also collect fashion dolls so they just fit in better with my other dolls. I also only collect mature dolls so dressing them can be a bit of a challenge since most 1/6 clothes are for more child-like dolls
i love the weird in-between sizes of 53ish cm like Zaoll, Bimong Dandelion etc. i just wish it weren’t so hard to find clothes and accessories for them!
Most of my dolls now are 70cm+ I used to have some smaller 60cm dolls when I was first in the hobby but I found I really like the 70 - 75cm size these days~
