Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XVIII

Mar 6, 2016

    1. I'm so impatient, the lottery entry isn't even over yet but my pants are on fire for the excitement for the 28'th day.

But I've tried to keep myself dollified by changing outfits and wigs on my girls. Yu Morisawa looks really different from what she was before. I will take a photo tomorrow. U_U Also the other girl looks a bit different too. *w*

    2. @Isenn I'm at a crossroads of "man I hope I win!" and "man, you really did not need to be (potentially) spending that much money right now you better hope you don't win or so help me".

He reminds me of School C, so I'll probs pick one up later if the lotto is a flop for me.

    3. Pictures! I'll only add this closeup, I love how froglike she is. XD

    4. @Isenn we are all the worst enablers. Never actually come to DoA looking for someone to tell you no. We will fail at it every time.

I have absolutely rotten luck at lotteries and probably should not be buying a new doll but Volks managed to make a full set that completely hits so many of my "Things I love in a doll" buttons that I cannot resist.

    5. Good luck to everyone in the lottery!

That Rigel is as cute as a meringue; he does sorta look like a mashup of School C and one of the Switch idol boys. :fangirl:

    6. New thread! :D Good luck to everyone putting in for Michele/Rigel. Maybe we'll get a corresponding girls' school next! :D

@Giggy, your Yu Morisawa is precious! I love her ducky little mouth ;) And her bold eyelashes!

My Creamy Mami, Vala, to celebrate the new thread. ;)

    8. Is anyone else confused about whether or not the orders from VOLKSUSA made before March 6th are lost too? I just paid off my Kiriko, so I'm kinda worried now.

    9. @Senko they said in their FB post to call them if you were concerned, but the pre-order info was stored elsewhere

    10. Thanks eleniel. I was just so concerned and maybe kinda freaking out a bit. I hope they can get things sorted quickly with their server company.

    11. I would be freaking out a bit too if I had a doll on pre-order :)

    12. The constant maintenance on the USA store is starting to become very frustrating (all I want is some overpriced eye putty, damn it).

    13. Amakusa is Gorgeous as always. :love I gave up on Volks USA a while back. Don't get me wrong: their lotteries are amazing and obviously they are working really hard (?) to stay open but I've never seen a business struggle so much with their hosting. What hosting company loses all that information and who doesn't keep a back up of really critical order info?:?

It is what it is, I guess. I only hope they make it back soon. I just picked up the silicone earplugs at Walgreens in place of their eye putty because I'm out of time to wait on their shop reopening.

@Giggy Man, Yu is spectacular.:D I passed on her and have always kicked myself for it because she is a darling, darling girl. I love your customization! :aheartbea

@snowgray Vala is pure love. Now that I know her character I can't help but love her even more! It's so much more fun when characters are interesting~ :aninja: (unsure why my comment merits a ninja face but I have always wanted to use it! Maybe because Vala is mysterious and wonderful much like the ninja!)

    14. Man do I hear you. This is what, the second, third time with almost the exact same problem? Once I noticed it was down I have to admit I mentioned to a friend that I feel like its a lie. It's just happened way too often, where as the international site never has this problem? Idk.

I just dont want to use the international site since I've become really unaccepting of companies charging $25+ EMS for a wig or eyes when they could ship small packet for like $4. Luxury hobby or no, I feel like doll companies have a special kind of disregard for how much money is being spent by people on these things.

      • x 2
    15. As someone who also buys Japanese figures mostly straight from Japanese shops. They fact that I can get a 1/8 scaled figure shipped for less then what some companies want to charge to get a wig and eyes shipped irks me to no end.

      • x 1
    16. It's funny you mention it because the moment I started figure collecting was the moment I stopped purchasing from EMS-only webshops.

I realize this is getting off-topic, but when I ordered three sets of eyes I asked if they'd let me do airmail or something instead. They replied that the difference between prices was small. This is what I received: http://i.imgur.com/X477O0E.png

I can't imagine why the prices were so similar. Thank you. So considerate.

      • x 3
    17. Slightly? more on topic. My friend ordered a MSD (mihmi I think?) and EMS (the only option) was over $100 from Japan because the box was hugely too big for the doll.

    18. o.O Good lord, that's worse then people complaining about AmiAmi over packing.

    19. @eleniel Haha, I once had Mandarake pack an SD13 body bent in half so that I could get it shipped by Registered SAL. It did end up breaking a finger but heyyy, since I don't use the default hands it was no skin off my nose!

That box must have been huge. D: I got a MSD body shipped just last week for 2,200 yen.

@Cloudedmind They complain about the over packing but then complain more if their box has a tiny dent on it. |'D

    20. Wow, someone actually buys Volks' eye putty? :XD: I always regarded those to be on the "ultimate luxury list" along with the tenshi-no hair brush xD I dunno, that pink toothbrush just seems like a waste of money to me. Anyway, I always use sticky tack (the white kind) and buy a whole packet for like... 7+ dolls. Is the Volks' putty way better? :o

    21. Wow, new thread! :thumbup

    22. @Chamillia The eye putty and sticky tack really arent comparable. Its not tacky since they add powder to it and has a kind of spongy feel (?). You only have to use a small bit so there's more than enough for many dolls. I've got, what, 8 now? I used about a quarter on them before giving the rest to a friend. It could be cheaper, but eh. I'll pay a few more bucks if its something I really like.

They wouldnt make it if people didnt buy it ;)

As far as the hair tool... Isnt it like $3 or something? Thats about the same price as a regular toothbrush, so if youre ordering something already I can see people tossing it in as a side item. Or if theyre just Volks fans/loyalists.

      @Clementia Shizuo is gorgeous!

      • x 3
    23. I use the eye putty too. It's so sticky you only need a little bit, and it doesn't leave the eyeballs feeling waxy or get stuck under your fingernails. One of those little tins of putty lasts for many many dolls! And so far the stuff I have hasn't dried out either, which is excellent.

(You need to use more of it on silicone eyeballs, though, because those are harder to get anything to stick to them.)

      • x 2
    24. I'm going to be weird and chime in on the eye putty. I think it's magical. It doesn't dry out or come off the inside of the head. As for the tenshi-no-hairbrush, it's too hilarious NOT to buy. (I see what you did there, Volks.)

      • x 3
    25. I am one of those people! *waves hand enthusiastically* I have had the eye putty and I have two of the hairbrushes!:o

I figure if I can't admit any of that here on this particular thread on DoA then what the heck am I a member of this forum for?:aheartbea;):aheartbea

I find the pick end of the hairbrush really useful when styling doll wigs and, yeah, the rest of it is just a normal toothbrush but it's really cute, pink and comes with a case. I'm already an admitted Volks fangirl (:fangirl:VOLKS:fangirl:) so I feel like I am self aware of nature of my fandom and I am one with it. Volks products do bring me a lot of happiness.

Volks eye putty is pretty great! I haven't tried the other putty and after learning that the sculpey that I bought from Kerbey Lane DS (which I would have sworn by in the past) has plasticizers that can (maybe?) damage the dolls, I am exploring other options.

@Clementia Shizuo is spectacular! I love her beautiful face-up. She has to be one of my most favorite Shizuo(s) I have ever seen!:D

    26. OK, you all have me sold on purchasing the Volks eye putty and I also have two of the Volks hairbrushes which I love! :love

      • x 2
    27. Hell forget the eye putty, I'm going to have to pick up a hair pick now too!

    28. I just received an order from Volks and semi-glad I didn't see all these rave reviews before I ordered or else some putty and a brush may have slipped into the cart (along w/ the stringing tool and the petato ring and...).

    29. I'll come in and say that I like the Volks eye putty too, the powder that's mixed inside of it is super helpful when it comes to keeping the eyes fingerprint free. I've used white sticky-tack and silicone earplugs before but didn't like that it was really hard to get out of the eye wells when changing eyes in the dolls.

As for the hairbrush, I tried to be cheap and use a gang of Daiso toothbrushes to tame my dolls wigs but found that while they did work.... they weren't that great at separating the bangs to get that "piece-y" fringe look if that makes sense. The sharpish/wing shaped point on the end of that glorified toothbrush does work well for that.

    30. :eusa_pray I really hope that Volks USA comes back online soon. I have yet to pay for my Kiriko pre-order and it would really stink if I'm unable to pay with PayPal because of this down time. Should have completely paid for the order when it first became available instead of waiting. :pout: Totally thought I was being good, too.

Sorry about the mini rant/pity fest. ;) My husband is really tired of hearing about resin dolls for the minute and I wanted to get this off my chest.

    31. DemonMiko- I don't mind. I know how you feel. I'm trying not to drive my husband crazy moping about the DearSD lottery.

    32. I was like that when I first found out about Volks (which is also when I found out of BJDs in general). I still remember going through their online catalog of sooooo many things that "I could buy if I had one of their dolls" :D The hairbrush, the hairspray, the eye putty~! Just looking at all the possible things you could buy was fun alone lol! Now I have to think twice before spending and yada yada, boring grown up stuff.

As for the hairbrush, I don't like the feel of a "brush" on synthetic hair, it just doesn't comb through the hairs as much as it just combs it on the outside(?) I dunno. I use this type of brush with the pick end as well and its my most helpful tool right after eye putty o_o

I know right. Now I think I'm getting some thanks to @revien

    33. I admit to having the Volks eye putty and the toothbrush too … :sweat

I had heard (but never personally experienced) that some of the putty tacky stuff (especially some of the coloured varieties) had discoloured some eyes and some left on too long had harden on the eyes and in the dolls causing problems of removal. In the past, I used the white tacky stuff plus sculpy. The Volks stuff is pretty nice though. It took a few attempts for me to get used to because it's not super sticky like the sticky white putty tack. But it removes a lot easier than the putty tacky stuff without the little bits of putty left behind.

The white tooth hair brush is nice too as the end is thinned out, so you can use it to section out hair for parting or braids or try and get that stubborn hair back into place. I like that it has a case so that you can put it in your bag and the bristles won't get damaged. Also, the toothbrush is denser with more little bristles than a regular tooth brush and is very soft. Better for brushing than a regular tooth brush.

I'm also a fan of the wig oil. It reduces wig frizz, smooths out hair and just gives the wig an overall nice look. Or if you were trying to braid a wig, I find spraying the hair before makes it more manageable to style and then keeps it in place. I would even say that it has save a couple wigs for me. The wig wax has come in handy by keeping stray stubborn hairs in place as well as added styling to certain cut wigs. Handy stuff!

    34. My fave little random Volks crap is the wig stop. Sooooooo much nicer than using velcro.

      • x 2
    35. I agree the new putty is nice. They must have changed it up when they moved to the smaller size. I have some of the older ones that have double the amount but most of them have become stiff and not elastic enough to use anymore. So far none of the newer ones have gone "bad".

I have a leg related question. I have a SD13 that came from the store closing event. It had been there for some time as I had seen it for years before the closing, so its not clear how old she really is. She did not come with a head plate and the one they sent out after did not give any clue to her age. She was a store FCS from what Bailey told me one visit. One knee joint tilts about 1/16 of an inch to the side when standing. I was not sure how to tell if this SD13 has the legs that break the tabs off the sides. Are there identifying marks or knee joint shapes that would indicate that?

      Regards,

      Bobby

    36. @Bobster The knee break issue was with the SD10 and SD13 girl pureskin legs. At the time the store opened and started FCS, the oldskin options had already been discontinued so yes she most likely is of the type that may have the break problem.

    37. You know I thought the same thing about the brush end too? Turns out (after extended use) it picks up a ton of dust and lint from the wigs! I am a collector-type person so all my dolls are displayed behind glass but somehow the wigs do pick up lint and particles over time- no matter what I do. The brush may not get all the through thick wigs but it does help clean out the finer dust and debris that the wigs can pick up!

Just want to preface this pic with the fact I wouldn't post a dirty hairbrush pic anywhere, ever but... uh... you'll see what I mean about the lint:

[IMG]Tenshi Hairbrush Needs A Cleaning! by NakitaN, on Flickr

The brush above is (as most of you already know) the one that comes with an FCS order.
I think a regular hairdresser's comb is a great idea and an addition I need to make to my styling kit.:3nodding:

A huge YES to wig oil and my other favorite item is the Water Wax? It smells like roses and can tame the wildest wigs! It's a style item I couldn't live without~ :aheartbea

    38. Oh no, did they start scenting the Water Wax?..... If so, then I'm glad I bought mine years ago when it was still unscented. And I will use it sparingly. I cannot tolerate rose perfume and I hate it when my dolls stink (one time I forgot to use unscented Downy when I conditioned a wig, and that poor doll reeked like April Fresh for a month ;; ). It's a really wonderful light-duty wax, for when you want some definition & taming, but don't want hardcore shaping.

And do they really give out free wooden-bristle brushes with FCS orders? :D That is nifty. I've never seen a wooden one, but it must be as good as metal for avoiding synthetic-hair-static.

Anyway, yeah, you wouldn't use a toothbrush / Tenshi-no-hairbrush to get out actual tangles from a synthetic fiber wig anyway.... the hairs get all crazed and perma-frizzed. For detangling I use one of those metal-bristle wig brushes that looks like a dog brush. But I like a damp toothbrush-type one for spot-styling during photoshoots & taming flyaways.

    39. @JennyNemesis- I don't think it's any different from the current formula. I'm still using the one I bought in 2010? I also horde it and use it sparingly since you really never need that much to get excellent results. I have another one I bought more recently and it also seems to have a slight floral smell to me (one that I equate with a rose-like scent?). I am also very chemically/smell sensitive- I can't stand any sort of perfume.:ablah: For that matter, the Water Wax may actually be unscented and I just perceive it differently from other people since I never use fragrance items. I do know it is awesome for taming those fly away hairs and adding a bit of shine~:D

They do give those brushes and I think a 'magic eraser-like sponge' as well- if I am remembering correctly? It's been a while since I ordered a FCS. The brush works really well for getting through more serious tangles when they occur.

I never though about wetting the brush before use- that is an excellent idea! I must admit I wish I were braver with styling my wigs. I am such a coward about heat styling or drastic cutting and I always admire people who have the skill and taste to really pull looks together by having a vision and seeing it through! :)

    40. I also want to vouch for the water wax, it's great for corralling stray hairs, sweeping bangs out of eyes or even holding ahoge. It does have a strong floral smell but even though I'm sometimes perfume sensitive it doesn't give me any trouble. A little bit goes a long way, just remember to secure the lid since it will dry out after a while.

I haven't tried the Volks brushes, I generally use a small brush designed for human wigs - it has an end with metal picks and that's super handy to straighten out hair loops and tangles.

    41. Thank you for the link. I read all 15 pages of post. There were some other threads linked in with good photos. Its clear that this SD is a pure skin type. The knees are similar to a first version Elena. I really like the FCS face up that this one came with, so I am just going to take it easy with the body.

    42. I have two quick questions for you all. Do clothes made for SD13 fit SD10 or vice versa? Also, if clothing is labeled "SD 1/3" such as on Alice's Collections, will it fit both SD10 and SD13 or just SD10?

ETA: I wouldn't ask, but with the website down, I don't have measurements to compare.

      • x 1
    43. That's a really good question because for actual Volks items I know they label clearly who their dresses will fit SD10/SD13 and I've definitely ordered some outfits before thinking "Hey, that'll work for both(?)" and 50% of the time it does but.... sometimes it still just doesn't look/fit quite right. Sometimes it's just the nature of the fabric or outfit that can cause fit issues with a minor size discrepancy?

Perhaps someone on here has purchased items through Alice's Collections will be able to provide more definitive advice about the vendor and their specific sizing?

There may be more helpful information in this thread that provides reviews of Alice's Collections and items people have received from them. You've probably already seen it but I hope it will prove useful as well! :)

    44. If someone has experience with Dollheart, I'd appreciate that as well. :)

I'm hoping Volks will do another FCS this spring or summer (although the current issues make me a bit worried about the possibility) and I'm trying to decide on either SD10 or SD13 (if they offer either). I've been looking at sculpts and such, so I can be somewhat prepared if/when FCS shows up again.

    45. For girls the outfits should fit both SD10 and SD13. Some of the measurements are a bit different between the two sizes (bust and waist mainly). If the outfit is built to be tightly fitted and accommodate breasts it may not fit an SD10 right etc.

If you mean guys clothing, no the sizes in general are not interchangeable.

    46. I apologize for not being more specific. Yes, I am asking about girls. I assume SD13 has larger breasts and a smaller waist? That would make sense for the difference in maturity they represen.

    47. Yep in general :)

    48. So, basically, some SD13 items would be too big in the bust/small in the waist for SD10 and some SD10 clothing would be the opposite on SD13?

(Just making sure I'm tracking with you. :) )

    49. Exactly :)

    50. it's possible the measurements were taken off a different but similarly sized doll. It's also common for two people to get slightly measurements off the same doll just based off the point measured or how the measurement was taken.

    51. That makes sense as well. Thank you for all your help this evening @eleniel. People like you are why I love this forum. :)

    52. Just realized today is White Valentine's Day :P

    53. So the Volks eye putty is better than the kind Luts has on their website?? Hmmm I may have to try it since the kind I use is really sticky from Luts.

    54. I've never had problems with the Luts ones and I've had them for years but I don't leave the eyes in my dolls for that long and I don't display my dolls so I'm not sure what happens to the putty if you leave them in the dolls for a long time.

    55. I'm not sure if the eye-stuff Luts has now is the same as what they offered a few years ago, but I did have the older stuff stain a pair of Dollshe urethanes once upon a time. That was what prompted me to switch all of my dolls with urethane or resin eyes over to the Mack's silicone. (The stuff may be messy, but the silicone is inert, and so completely non-reactive.)

Over-all, I really prefer the texture and the stickiness of the Volks putty over Luts', in any case. I haven't tried it with any of my urethanes (Yeah. Paranoia, there.), but it's really ace with glass.

    56. It's also really ace with urethane or acrylic eyes! This putty is seriously sticky to any smooth hard surface. (Including my own thumbnails. :XD: Eyeball changing always requires a little wrestling.) All my dolls who wear Gumdrops just have a little ring of this putty around them + a dot of it to anchor inside the eyewell. No color, no staining.

You need a little more for silicone eyes, though.

    57. Wishing everyone here so much luck for the lottery- I am wishing you all receive your Micheles and Rigels! :)

I also wanted to share a pic form Volks Instagram that I found. I thought a few other might appreciate it too. :aheartbea
