Volks Dollfie ICON

I honestly loved all 5 this year, and had I had the money/willingness to pay, I may have entered for all five.
Instead, I made a poor choice at 3 am one night while suffering from insomnia and figured, "Aw, what the heck. I'll enter for Iris/Lilac. I probably won't win."
I won. (I started a doll no-buy thread over in Brigadoon. It's going wonderfully. Sigh. )

Still - I can't wait for her to arrive. I really struggled between her and Aisha, but I love purple...

 

Well, I haven't been to DoA for a long time. I won my first Volk lotto ever last Friday, my email also came out at 9:31 AM PDT, and I'd applied for, and won, Terra. My doll will not be available for a rerun lotto draw, LOL! Congrats to the winners, my heart goes out to everyone else (my sis had also entered and did not win).

I... kind of did the opposite. Last year, I had already decided if they offered the Icons with matching joints I'd try for Lilac because I love the color and want to encourage them to keep offering fantasy skins like that. (I'd LOVE to see them do a bright blue.) And of course they did, but they also released Aisha at the same time. I debated for a long while, but finally decided to go for Aisha, and didn't get her. This time, I did!

 

Entered the lotto for Iris clover and Serra and ended up winning for Serra. The only Dollfie I have is Yshtola so I’m excited to have one I’m not terrified to spend time with. Congrats to all those that won in the lottery this time

Iris/Lilac is here. This is my first "full set" from Volks, and I'm a bit stunned. I saw all of the outfits on the promotional pictures, and I guess I figured it was like a blind box thing: you got an outfit randomly, and if you wanted the other outfits, you had to buy the other dolls.

NOPE.

She came with a bra top and matching skirt, a full-length dress, a belt, a choker, a pair of knickers, earrings, boots, and the most cleverly designed pants I've ever seen. Thank heavens Volks includes that little instruction booklet. I was totally stumped by the pants. Now that I know how they work - absolutely ingenuous. Incredibly clever design. She is an iridescent light purple, and her joints are the same color (but without the sparkly sheen). Sorry, no photos yet - I have to take the pictures, decide which ones I like, crop out the messy background, and then post them to Flickr... You know how it is.

She is stunning. I've been staring at her all day. I can't get over how gorgeous this doll is. And considering how pricey Volks outfits can be? And the cost of special vinyl colors? Yeah. I feel I got excellent value for my money.

I've already ordered some sewing books. This is the doll that's going to get me off my behind and start making stuff. (A proper bra, for starters.)

 

@MaleficentMrsofEvil - The pants had me confused for a bit too. "Did they really mean to make them like that?!" Yes. Yes, they did. And I hear you on the photography process - it usually takes me multiple sessions to get anything posted. Aisha got here on Tuesday morning and I'm writing this... um... 4 AM Thursday, apparently...

Anyway!



She's lovely, but with two minor flaws. The top/bra piece has a dark mark on it that doesn't want to come off, and whoever painted her went a bit outside the upper lip on one side and not on the other, so it's not symmetrical. The latter isn't really noticeable unless you're looking at her dead-on, though, and I can probably fix it myself, so I'm not really complaining.

I can't help you on how to keep the existing curls looking nice, but I can help on keeping the doll hair looking shiny: find the cheapest conditioner you can get that is for heat-treated hair (or Pantene) - the awful stuff that is loaded with silicone and makes beads in human hair? The kind that has terrible reviews because it makes people's hair look greasy? Yeah - that's what you want. You can use shampoo (I sometimes just use dish soap) to wash the hair, and then use the silicone-filled conditioner. Leave it in for a few minutes and then rinse out. Doll hair with really tight curls or kinks is usually polypropylene hair, because that's the only kind of synthetic hair (edit: that I know of, but apparently there's nylon that can too?) that can hold tight curls. Polypropylene is a lot like human hair in that it dries out very easily and develops split ends over time. You should plan to condition polypropylene hair at least annually, and give the hair the occasional split end trim.

NOTE: This assumes that you have wigs with sewn wefts. If you have a wig made with glue/hard cap, dunking the hair in water could dissolve the cap and/or the glue.

To restyle a wig that's losing its curl (or to add curls to any doll wig), get straws and roller papers. Use the roller papers (like for human perms) to keep the ends from getting frizzy. Using small sections of hair, wrap the hair around one straw. Split a second straw along one side, and use it like a clamp over the hair. Bigger straws will give you looser curls - smaller straws, tighter curls. To "set" the curls, dunk the hair (in straws) in hot water just off a boil (200 degrees F/95-98 degrees C), and let it air dry. Some people swear by putting the hair in the freezer, but that's up to you. Let the hair sit for about 24 hours or until fully dry, and then pull off your straw "clamps" and pull out the straw "curlers." Cheap hairspray (Aqua net) will hold curls nicely.

 

@MaleficentMrsofEvil - Thanks for the suggestions! That's kind of funny about the silicone-filled conditioner. Didn't know that! I have a love-hate relationship with curly wigs, apparently. I keep buying them even though they frustrate the heck out of me.
Anyway, I really love her color! Not sure if I want to change the eyes, though, and that glue is not going to be fun to get loose if I do.

And a bit of a warning - I just spent 20 minutes hunting everywhere for one of Aisha's earrings after I made the mistake of trying to adjust her wig while walking into the other room, and I guess one of her fingers snagged on it. Seems the only thing holding them in there is a bit of friction. But on the plus side, that means it went back in pretty easily too.

I may repaint them to be silver, TBH. Or get her some silver hoops instead.

I hope this comes through - my phone is not a great camera. The vinyl shell is pearlescent, but the joints are flat. I can't tell unless I'm looking really close - but some folks like to look really close, so:

Opinions, anyone? To me they have a 1950s Hollywood starlet look, or rockabilly. They need cat-eye sunglasses

 

My opinion is, THEY NEED TO START SELLING THESE OUTFIT SETS AND WIGS SEPARATELY!! This isn't the first time I've wished I could buy the outfit set separately.

 

I think they're beautiful! But also, I'm a little sad. No green or purple this year.

 

Are the Dollfie Icons going to be more widely available this year, or just via lottery at the LA Dolpa...?

 

As far as I know, just at the LA Dolpa. But you never know, maybe, just maybe, there could be an online after-event. Volks moves in mysterious ways...

The outfits are extraordinary. Just divine. I have my purple Icon - I would love an updated outfit without having to buy a whole new doll.
When Rainbow High or another play line doll company makes you buy a whole doll for a new outfit, that's one thing.
When it's an $850 doll? Ouch.

 

Possibly an unpopular opinion here.
While the styling is cute, I can't help but think they feel a bit... 'Barbie' this time. Maybe it's just me? The previous releases were very original, but in comparison they feel a little uninspired this time.
Again, not saying they aren't cute, just not what I expected.

 

I really wanted a mint green one. Like, really, really wanted. If they had released one in mint green, I may have caved.
So you may be onto something @yukiri - I will abstain this year.

 

@yukiri, I get what you're saying. The blonde dolls especially are so Barbie. However, they have a way of pulling you in; they're very cheerful and their expression is engaging. (Am I talking myself into one? Possibly, although I like the raven-haired beauties, too.) I'm set to attend the LA Dolpa, so... we'll see how well they're received.

I personally love the rockabilly styling. I agree it would have been nice to see some Clover and Iris dolls too. It's probably a good thing I am not going to Dolpa because they would be very tempting.

 

Just here anxiously hoping to get an email saying when the lottery results come in. Really want to get either Aisha or Nikki from this year's Dolls Party LA 5 - 2024 After Event Items. Saw the Volks ICONs in person and actually loved all the different variations for the dolls there but my wallet can't handle all this strain so close to the holidays (did revenge buying elsewhere if that is even a term). I didn't win any dolls at the event, but it's still fun cheering on for others.

Aaahh, I was lucky enough to win the lottery chance for Aisha!!! I saw all this year's Icons in person at LA Dolpa, and they all looked so stunning! I tried for Terra but didn't get chosen, so I'm very happy to welcome Aisha home this time!

For those wondering, I received the winning invoice email at 9:09am PST with a unique link to the payment page. The winning results didn't show up in my account when I logged in. Also, the only delivery option available was UPS Ground.

These dolls are totally off the grid of what I collect... but I really like the minty green color and the face sculpt of the new girl.

Not sure if I want to enter yet... but I really am starting to appreciate this line of dollies!

 

I adore the new fantasy colour girls (I have an Aisha, so no surprise I'm weak to that sculpt lol) but I just bought a new big resin boy + the CAD/USD conversion isn't doing so hot right now, so I don't think I can justify it. Maybe next time Erin comes around, I can do it.

 

Nice to see them offer the second sculpt in the other colors (if I understand correctly)! I'd still love to see them do a sky blue too.

 

Did anyone else put in a lotto entry for the Icons? I put in for Erin, but trying to manage my expectations - especially if these dolls are typically smaller runs.

 

Going for Lilac, I think, but still deciding. (Standard or Romantic Glance?)

Welp, I put in for RG Lilac. Here goes...

 

Is the sculpt of Lyra (lilac color) the same as Nikki (pearly color) and the sculpt of Erin (mint green) the same as Aisha (tawny)? Thank you for anyone’s help on this!

 

There are 2 sculpts (kind of 3 with the RG version of the first set):
Serra (petal), Terra (tawny), Lilac (iris), and Clover (mint) are all the same. This sculpt line also has a romantic glance (RG) version as well in all colors under the same name.
Nikki (petal), Aisha (tawny), Lyra (iris), and Erin (mint) are all the same. However, no romantic glance for this sculpt had been made at this time.

Oh wow thank you! I did NOT realize this! I thought Nikki and Aisha were 2 separate sculpts I thought they looked a lot alike but did not realize that they’re actually the same sculpt! I don’t have Nikki so I was thinking to enter for Lyra thinking that was the “Nikki” sculpt. I do have Aisha though so now that I realize they’re the same sculpt I don’t think I will enter. Wow no wonder I couldn’t tell for sure! Lol I appreciate your help and thank you!
