Contest Triathlon Round I: Dress for Success

Aug 1, 2017

    1. Vote for Round 1 Here!

This is the first of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of four fabulous rewards as announced here.

Ball-jointed dolls are constructed in such a way as to have great presence regardless of outfit, but there are some looks that just suit the individual doll better than others – clothing that makes them look like they could rule the world. We challenge you to make an outfit that makes your doll look and feel powerful, like they could accomplish anything. You may use a variety of materials – we always encourage the use of non-traditional and recycled materials – but the end result must make your doll look on top of the world.

Make an outfit that makes your doll feel amazing.
      • Your outfit can be any style but must cover the majority of your doll's torso at minimum.
      • Your outfit can be made from any materials, synthetic or natural.
      • Your doll must still be able to move limbs while dressed.
      • Your outfit must be removable. (No sticking clear tape or cling film directly to your doll!)
      Materials
      • Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own household items or clothing, you may dumpster dive, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all.

      • Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials.

      • Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it.

Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Rules
      1. You may submit only one entry.
      2. The outfit must have been created specifically for this contest.
      3. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.
      4. Outfits must be modeled by on-topic dolls.
      5. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished outfit or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.
      6. You must use the same doll for all three challenges.
      7. You will be asked to choose lucky or unlucky when you submit your entry: choose wisely as this decision could have a profound impact on a later challenge.
IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements.

      How to Enter

You will need to provide the following photos:

      1. a front view of your doll standing wearing the outfit
      2. a back view of your doll standing wearing the outfit
      3. a collage image showing notable details
      4. a photo of recycled materials used (before use)
      5. a photo of purchased materials used (before use)
      6. a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6)
      7. a style shot of the completed outfit showing the doll posing naturally
Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

Do NOT submit your images as links: please follow the directions on the entry form to insert your images. You will be uploading your images directly to DoA. If you are not sure about this, please view this short tutorial before submitting your entry.

Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry. You may title it however you like.

      :cake: ENTRIES ARE CLOSED :cake:

Do not contact the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

      Voting, Points and Prizes

      • This is the first task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges.
      • Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge.
      • Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.
      • We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years – pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests.
      • As stated in the challenge description, you will need to select either ‘lucky’ or ‘unlucky’. This choice will apply towards future challenges within this year’s triathlon.

Members will have three vote points to distribute to three different entries based on the following criteria:
      • Craftsmanship and attention to detail
      • Creative use of materials
      • Aesthetic appeal
      Important Dates

Challenge One Opens: Tuesday August 1st
Submission Deadline: Saturday August 12th 11:59pm EDT
      (midnight)
Challenge One Voting Opens: Monday August 14th 12pm EDT (noon)
Challenge One Voting Closes: Saturday August 19th 11:59pm EDT (midnight)
Challenge One Voting Results Post: Sunday August 20th

If you have general questions about the contest, feel free to post in this thread. Questions about your specific entries should be posted in Ask the Moderators.

    2. just about to start brainstorming ideas and had a question If there is some fabric from my fabric stash i want to use would that count in the re-purposed or towards the 20$ budget

    3. I have a quick question! The doll I'd want to dress for this is, ah...well, very recognizable. :sweat I know the codenames are for anonymity, so is a super recognizable doll okay to submit? I've always kind of wondered...

(Also, none of the links in the above post are working for me; I'm not sure if it's just me or the links themselves!)

    4. @dollyolly1 The rules state: "After you've exhausted your craft stash. . .and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget." so I take this to mean that that does NOT come out of your budget.

I also have a Q. Last year, we had to use the same doll for all three challenges IIRC. Is that going to be the case this year?

    5. Ah noo... I never do more than one of these things at a time... But I have an idea for this one too and it won't go away.

    6. Den of Angels - Error
You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action.
      -------------------------------

Does that mean that I am not eligible?
Or just that the link "Enter the Triathlon" is broken?
      ><

    7. Fabric you already own does not count towards the $20 budget.

It's fine to submit a recognizable doll.
      @Dezarii please check the links.

You do need to use the same doll for all three challenges.

    8. @Dezarii will be checking on the link to the entry form, but you do have until the 12th to enter so I wouldn't be too worried at this point.

    9. Oooooo excited!! :D I had to drop out last year and was way more crushed than I thought I should have been, lol. Are we allowed to vote for the just for fun entries? I know we weren't last year but could the year before.

Good luck guys, y'all always amaze me :)

    10. Well the doll for this one immediately sat up and went "me! Me! ME!" in an unexpectedly vehement manner...

Even with the whole week and a half I'm doubtful I'll be able to finish my planned thing on time, but you know what - it'll end up as a permanent part of said doll's wardrobe so I'm thankful for the push back into actually doing something with them.

      • x 1
    11. Brainstorming: "powerful" can be associated with a variety of characters from pop culture. Does the outfit need to be an original idea or can it be a cosplay based on an existing character from comics movies tv etc?

    12. I have a question:

If we have to use the same doll for all three challenges, is it alright to use one that is already blushed and painted?

(I'm just afraid to choose a finished doll and then later be asked to perform a fresh faceup or a permanent modification) :(

    13. I want to ask what we should do if we use a different material/exchange it, with regards to the photo 4/5 of the materials? I change my mind easily, so what would happen if that ends up being the case? Would I have to take a completely new photo or add it to my original photo?

    14. Aw, this sounds really fun, but I have no doll to dress right now. Hope to be able to join in next year and best of luck to all contestants :).

    15. I don't really have any sewing skills at the moment, so I won't be joining in this. Wishing the best of luck to all of this year's entrants!:kitty2

    16. @jade-eyed-cat if this year is like previous years, you won't need sewing skills for the other two rounds. Why not give it a try? :)

    17. Well things are progressing...

At the moment it feels like it's going well, but I know that the next stage is going to be infinitely more fiddly, and very time consuming to get everything looking the part before I'm ready for the next equally intimidating step.

FYI - I'm almost a complete novice when it comes to this sewing stuff too, but I'm giving it a go anyway.

    18. If our doll just arrived and does not have a faceup or wig, is that alright or does the doll need to have them to be usable?

    19. Are we allowed to use multiple dolls to elaborate a scene for the photo/outfit? Or will only the doll that's wearing the entry outfit be allowed in the photos?

    20. Can we use other materials , such as worbla (thermoplast ) to create an outfit , mixed with fabric ofcourse?

As a cosplayer i use it all the time for costumes /armors

    21. Seconding this question. I have a doll I would love to use for the Sewing part, but I would hate to have to choose between wiping her face and dropping out

      • x 1
    22. Ohhh, I'm so excited!

I'd like to echo the question posed above about 'unfinished' dolls. The doll I'll be using has no faceup or wig at the moment - is that okay?

      • x 1
    23. Would it be ok to show your work if you are doing it just for fun and not competing for the prizes or votes or whatever?

The prizes are lovely, but I would actually be happier using this just as a creative challenge to see what I can make for my dolls within the time restrictions, and it'd be a lot more rewarding for me if I could share my process (and inevitable mess-ups) along the way.

Totally understand if it's not allowed, in which case I'll just follow along doing the challenge without officially entering.

    24. Whoops, I have another question. Can our "recycled materials" picture be a collage? I often find materials and whatnot and add them on as I go, so could I just stick pictures of everything all together at the end?

    25. Can I use a borrowed doll? I've been meaning to make some stuff for a friend's doll, and keep putting it off, but I think this would be the perfect opportunity to build up that wardrobe!

Also- where dose it say about choosing lucky or unlucky? It's mentioned under points and voting sort of, by I didn't see the first mention...

    26. Oh! I forgot to ask, are we allowed artistic doll nudity? Or must we make sure all entries are safe for work?

    27. I admit that I didn't understood the reason we have to make a choice between "lucky or unlucky" for our entry... ><
Could this be explained a bit please?

    28. The just for fun entries are really just for fun. You will not be able to vote for them.

      It's up to you!

You can use a blushed and painted doll. :)

You can create a collage style photo (make sure you save it in the correct file type and size!), you can reshoot the photo, or you can include items you think you may use in your original photo: there is no penalty for not using something in your materials photo.

A faceup and wig can definitely add to the overall effect but they aren't required. :)

For this challenge please focus on the doll and the outfit you are creating.

Your materials are entirely up to you! If you choose to purchase worbla or other materials they come out of your $20 total.

      It's fine :)

We'd prefer it if you didn't show your work until after the challenge closes (once the challenge has closed you could then post all your in progress photos).

A collage is fine, just make sure you can save it as a .jpg or .jpeg that is no more than 600 pixels on the longest side.

You can use a borrowed doll, just make sure you will be able to use the same doll for all three challenges.

The choice of lucky/unlucky will be relevant in a future challenge so choose wisely.

Your outfit needs to cover the torso but does not need to be safe for work (for example, you can post an entirely transparent outfit).

This choice will have an impact on one of the later challenges.

      • x 3
    29. Does the outfit need to cover the whole torso or can it have cutouts and stuff like that?

    30. Small cutouts, such as those you may see in evening gowns, or holes like you'd see in lace panels are fine.

      • x 1
    31. I still thinking which doll will join but it´s most likely the doll I resieved yesterday. I only showed one photo of her plus shes in NEED of a Dress. Or my Vampire Boy. Hadn´t posted him at all but he is still away for face up...

Well I dive into my fabric stash and see

    32. Is it just me, or is there a lot of pressure in choosing between lucky and unlucky?
It's sort of ominous... just what does DoA have in store for the competitors!?!

      • x 4
    33. Lol well I'm back into hand sewing... My borrowed machine is a horror that takes turns either swallowing any and all material into the abyss underneath the metal plate where the bobbin lives, or cuts the thread no matter what the tension settings are.

I did tell you guys that I'm a complete newb at this, right? :XD:

    34. This sounds so exciting, I just can't choose which doll to use! (I really better do it soon, too...)

Sounds like you should choose "unlucky".

    35. Ach - I think I've made a significant jump forward in my knowledge of *how* to do a thing... A very important thing.

Still hampered by the sewing machine being a bit of a demon, but I think an aspect of this design that looked almost impossible to do well isn't quite as horrific as it seems. I hope.

    36. I used a dress of mine to repurpose for this challenge but enthusiastic me forgot to snap a picture before I started sowing... Is there any way of fixing that? I do have a picture of me wearing the dress but I'm afraid that won't do as a picture of all used materials.

The top part of the dress is still intact. Would it do to just take a picture of all the materials together with only that part of the dress?

      Thanks!

    37. I'm a complete failure at sewing, but I'm giving it a shot! So far, I managed to cut my first attempt wrong, wasting a ton of fabric that is now unusable. My cat stole another piece for some reason, and drooled all over it. I then sewed the seams on my second attempt too small, sewed a second set of seams a little bigger following the lines of the smaller line of stitches, but then when I went back to rip out the small seams, I accidentally cut my good ones instead lol. So I'm thinking unlucky is the way to go :p

      • x 2
    38. I finished most of my drafting last night and am going to be actually starting tonight! I pretty much had a concept for each doll I own but finally decided :P

    39. Oopf my action plan is currently insane... But I think it might be doable.

Obviously I can't go into any details, but it's been quite a learning curve so far and I suspect I'm going to stumble across more unexpected complications as this thing finally begins to visibly come together.

But with light at the end of the tunnel (that may well prove to be a train) I'm beginning to look forward to the fun part; seeing everyone else's take on the brief.

    40. Sometimes its good to be a cosplayer and fabric hoarder. I found - except for a string to bind the front - everthing in my stash and made the pattern yesterday. I already have so much fun

    41. Well, my first attempt was a failure I must admit! I think it's the pressure of time that has its consequences. But I've just started a different costume, and it's seems to be better this time :)

      • x 2
    42. Whelp, I'm twelve and a quarter hours into this outfit, and I'm having a lot of fun~ I'm expecting to have at least another eight or ten hours to go, but I'm pretty sure I'm over the hump work-wise. I'm really glad I chose to do this!

    43. Finally, after much much work that didn't appear to visibly do anything progress-wise, there's some resemblance now to the intended end product.

Egads, there's still a hell of a lot to be done though.

    44. Haha I spend yesterday 7 hrs on a piece nobody will see. I even added lace. I also have no fitting pearls in silver or blue so embroidery it will be

    45. I started with props and my biggest difficulty is NOT putting so much time into trying to make everything perfect! ><
This challenge will be very good for me as a mean to learn not to spend too much time on a single little detail.

      • x 1
    46. I have started and done ris anyone else having issues getting links for thier pics in any photo sharing programs?

    47. Haven't thought about it to be true. For sure I can't use my flickr because than someone beside the mods would see it

    48. I use a password protected sideblog on tumblr for holding progress pics. Maybe that would work?

Challenge 1 is perfect for my doll and one of the prizes is on the top of my wishlist but the rest of august (post challenge 1 or so) is packing, traveling, moving, and orientation. Doubt I can make this work but I want to get my doll dressed already...

    49. Didn't know tumblr have something like this. Mhmmmm maybe I check this out later

    50. This year we are trying a new method of submitting entries. You will be dragging your final photos directly into the entry form (follow the instructions carefully) rather than hosting them offsite.

      • x 2
    51. That's good news! I noticed that some photos I host offsite (on my facebook page) mysteriously disappear from the forum with time, and I have to re-enter them again. I think it has something to do with the facebook because I never had that issue hosting pictures on flickr. So, the new entry method seems much ''safer''! :)

    52. Think about 10 hours into my outfit but got most pics made today need to paint them and figure out how to assemble and finish making the key pice... no idea what will work best... time to experiment how to make it hold together :whee:my goal is to be done no later than tomorrow so I have lots of time to clean the mess I made making this entry and take my pictures of the finished product . I'm so excited to see everyone's entries think voting is my favorite part :D

    53. It took all morning but I think I've just completed the most difficult step in the assembly process... The light at the end of the tunnel wasn't a train!

      • x 2
    54. I still struggeling with the last step.... but I have tomorrow the whole day to finish m outfit

    55. You can include the top part in your materials photo.

    56. Woo - suspected it would work out this way, it's gone from a small mountain of separate parts to a very nearly complete outfit in a couple of hours.

For... Reasons that cannot be gone into, the assembly method has been nearly completely arse about face... Terribly I'm really looking forward to the discussion of the entries once we're allowed to do so - I'm sure that those who actually know what they're doing will probably be able to tell me how they'd have gone about all of this - and of course it's always lovely to see who went for which take on the brief.

    57. I managed to get a bunch of scrap pieces stored away when I first started making outfits for my dolls. The fabric stores always have them on sale for super cheap.

Question: Say by some dumb luck, we end up in the prizes, but the prize we wanted to pick was already chosen. Can we choose to let the runner up pick a prize rather than pick a prize we wont be able to 'bond' too and loose the chance to get future prizes we would 'bond' too.

    58. Learning all sorts of technical sewing terms this week - accidentally 'invented' a couple of methods; and only found out what they're actually called/used for several days later!

Really looking forward to the after-the-event-discussion this year. I may even end up redoing the whole outfit again at this rate with all of the things I'm picking up in this learning curve... (And almost certainly going to be picking up my own machine after this; this borrowed Singer is gorgeously simple to use compared to the evil Brother machine that I had initially borrowed)

    59. hope everyone had a good crafting/ sewing/ making weekend got almost all my outfit done just have one more thing left to make so counting down the min till i'm done work and can go home and work on my outfit .

    60. @dollyolly1 it was challenging and I nearly had a breakdown today after I sewn one sleeve onto the dress while closing the inner but somehow it was a good and productive weekend . :3nodding:

Tomorrow I clean the mess I made on our table and take the pictures. The next days I'm back at playing Zelda. Only had yesterday a little break
