Contest The It's So Basic Sock Extravaganza

Aug 1, 2018

    1. Presenting: The It's So Basic Sock Extravaganza!

(also known as 'a fancy name for a very simple contest'.)

The Anniversary's overall theme this year is 'Back to Basics' and what's more basic than making clothes for your doll out of that most-readily-available material, socks? To keep things super-simple, it's a sewing contest that's all about creating stylish wardrobe basics!

      Voting is now live!!

      :cake: Vote here! :cake:

:cake: Just for Fun here! :cake:

      Description and Rules:

Entrants must create an entire basic outfit using only commercially-made socks. The socks may be conventional ankle socks, knee-socks, trouser socks, or nylons. As the amount of fabric in socks can vary, there is no limit on the number of socks one may use, but they must meet the above definition of 'socks'. For the purpose of this contest, 'basic outfit' consists of a shirt/top and pants/skirt/bottom. For some examples, a shirt and pants are acceptable, a top and a skirt are acceptable, a complete one-piece dress is acceptable, and as a suit is considered a 'wardrobe basic', it is also acceptable. Want to make coordinating socks out of socks for your fabulously basic outfit? Please do!

There is no restriction on theme. We encourage the use of wild and crazy socks for that basically basic look!

Embellishments such as beads, buttons, and sequins are permitted, but no other textiles (such as lace or ribbon) may be used. Obviously use of thread, elastic, buttons, snaps, hooks, eyes, and other notions is allowed. Fray-check is allowed.

The design must be your own; no team entries (designer + seamstress or tailor) or use of outside patterns.

We permit and encourage the use of advanced sewing and textile skills (such as embroidery), though we do not allow techniques that create new fabrics (such as knitting or crocheting).

ETA: Red alert, red alert! Due to a late rules clarification, here is an update! Garments must be hand or machine sewn. In past contests, glue and adhesive were not permitted, but for this year's sock contest, embellishments may be glued or sewn. Just no gluing the outfit onto your doll, please!

CLARIFICATIONS ON MATERIALS FROM PREVIOUS CONTESTS

      1. Embellishments such as beads, buttons, and sequins are all right. CLOTH OR TEXTILE embellishments such as ribbon, lace, or yarn are not.

      2. Lace and ribbon are all right if they are attached to one of the socks that you are using. If your outfit seems to have a lot of this, you may want to take before and after pictures to prove that the lace is from a sock.

      3. You may use socks, pantyhose, tights, fishnets, thigh-highs. You may not use gloves, mittens, footless tights, shoes, slippers, or other clothing.

      4. The outfit must be modeled on an on-topic doll. We don't care if you own the model or not; to help maintain your anonymity for judging, using a friend's on-topic doll is fine.

      How to enter

Each member may enter only ONE design.

Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry, and your entry will be made anonymous for the voting. You may title it however you like.

:cake: ENTER THIS CONTEST :cake: Entries are now closed!!

There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, or watermark.

Do not post your design elsewhere prior to completion of voting; doing so will remove your entry from the contest. We wish for the entries to be anonymous in order to make voting more fair.

This contest is open to all DoA members and Moderation Staff. Staff and previous winners of any couture contest in the last five years are not allowed to compete for prizes but only for fun.

Entries must be received by August 17th 11:59 pm EDT (UTC -4:00).

      Voting

Entries will be posted on DoA on August 23rd for voting. Voting will run from August 23rd to August 30th.

The winner will be decided by member vote. In the event of a tie, the contest staff will cast the deciding vote.

The following should be the judging criteria for the contest:

      --Best overall ensemble of basics
--Best creative use of basic materials
      --Most interesting socks used

      :goldstarPrizes:goldstar

The creator of the entry with the most votes will receive

    3. To be clear, are snaps or hooks included in the allowed notions? Super excited for this one!

    4. Yes they are. :)

      • x 2
    5. Can you use the elastic to constructs a bra type thing, where you use it as the edges of the "booby triangles" where it will be clearly visible? Same goes for using it as the triangle for lingerie.

    6. Would be 3 piece set alright? For example top+pants+coat.

    7. What a challenge! 8) I must make a sock outfit! My dollies have never had one!

      • x 1
    8. Do you have some example of clothes that are not basic enough?
Is for example any "one piece dress" fine or will too many details or too big a dress disqualify from the challenge?

    9. hello, I'm trying to click "enter the contest" but nothing happens. what am I doing wrong?

    10. Let us know about the pictures presenting the creations - how many of them can be sent? Should we take a picture of socks before "editing" them? May doll on the picture wear wig/shoes/jewelery/etc exept the contest outfit?

And are there any limits about number of socks used to create an outfit?

    11. Oh wow, I thought last year we were limited with our 20$ material list, but only socks ?!?
This is going to be really interesting!

      Questions:
      - Can the model be wearing other things beside the sock outfit for the purpose of the picture?
Like shoes, belts, glasses, weapons, umbrella, handbag, hats, ...

      - Can we use iron-on decorative patches?

      - About socks with lace and ribbon, are we to use them as they came in on the sock, or are we allowed to take them out and use them as we want?

Thank you for your time =^.^=

    12. I'm new to the contests in general XD actually had a question about the prizes for the different contests. When it says Nude Blank on the prizes does that mean no skin tone or just no faceup?

    13. This sounds like fun! ^_^ I'd just like to ask two (perhaps silly) questions for clarification:

      1. For bottoms, are we allowed to have a skirt or dress over something? For instance, if we wanted to make tights or leggings and put something over it?

      2. Like a few other people have mentioned, I'm also wondering if we can use socks to create other accessories?

      Thanks in advance! ^_^

    14. Nothing wrong! The form for the contest is being coded and once it's made the link will be live!

I have to go feed the spouse but will be back later to answer questions!

    15. I haven’t made a sock dress in about ten years! I’m really excited for this. I already have an idea, either my doll will love it or be embarrassed to wear it, not sure which. :XD: Either way, it’ll be fun!

    16. Are we allowed to use stabilizers and interfacings as notions?
      Thank you :)

    17. Echoing what other people have asked a bit,

Are accessories like hats, headbands, belts, arm/legwarmers, handbags, scarves, etc (made out of socks) ok?

What about layers, can our sock outfit have for example a skirt and tights (made out of socks), dress and cardigan, or a t-shirt and sweater?

    18. i'm sure this has been asked as well but can you use elastic that didnt come with the socks? say some really thin elastic to be sewn into a hem line for socks?

    19. There's a lot up in the first post, but they did actually address that already for you, so no need to wait for an answer. :)

    21. Really looking forward to seeing the entries and voting, I’ll be cheering everyone on, good luck!
      :clover:clover:clover

    22. Are hoodies and cardigans allowed? I remember a tutorial where someone made a hoodie from the sock from when I first started with bjds.

      • x 1
    23. You're welcome, and no worries, I remembered it being in there somewhere but it still took me a minute to find it myself. :)

    24. This one is gonna be fun XD

    25. The primary material for this contest is intended to be socks. If the elastic becomes a larger part of the construction, is used as a textile would be (such as a place where one would put lace or ribbon in a normal garment), or as a substitute for using socks, then no. If the lingerie/bra are intended to be the entire outfit, the elastic would be taking up a large part of the overall outfit (assuming it would be used as the 'straps' or the connecting parts). Elastic is intended to be used as a notion rather than as a major visible part of the construction materials.

If you have a picture or a drawing of what you have in mind, you can always clarify this further with us in Ask the Moderators. I sometimes need to see things before I can clearly picture them.

Yes! That is pretty much the same as a suit, which is a 'basic'.

To go along with this year's theme, the simpler the better. More along the lines of everyday wear than formal or runway wear.

These are our judging criteria this year, and the basis for the community's votes:

As long as a basic outfit doesn't violate the rules (using lace/ribbon not on the original socks, use of knit/crochet to create fabric, use of materials not classified as 'socks' in the contest rules), there is no restriction on theme. Creative use of these basic materials is encouraged! And even if you're planning to compete for the prizes, having fun is the most important part. :D

If you have something specific in mind, you can always clarify with us in Ask the Moderators. That way your anonymity for the contest is preserved.

No limit to the number of socks! The only limit is how many you are willing to cut up and make clothes from. :)

The entry form will have a place for your materials picture, which should include all of your socks and notions and embellishments.

    26. So it says "commercially available" socks. What exactly does that mean? Like, can the socks have designs or prints? Can they be themed (Star Trek, etc) or have sayings? Can I use toe socks? Do I have to buy them new? Sorry for all the questions, but I live in a household of 4, and we have butt-loads of cool socks that hardly get used that I'd love to use.

    27. ... now now...
Will I make this outfit for a girl? Or for a boy?
      :evilplot:

      • x 3
    28. stupid question but: Is it okay to make frills out of the socks I am using for my Socksdress since it is made out of the sock?

    29. What about under garments? If I make socks undies and a camisole, but then a cardigan and shorts, is that going to be ok? Or would I need to drop something?

Also seconding the submission photos and such.

    30. Oh this contest is wonderful, what a fun challenge!

I do have a few questions: Are doll shoes considered textiles or would they be permitted? Additionally, should we stick to one photo or is more expected to show off different angles?

      Thank you!

    31. Because of two statements in the rules I'm just a little confused. Are we allowed to use embroidery thread?

    32. --The main thing that people will need to see is the outfit, as that is what is being judged for the contest. At most, I think a pair of shoes would be allowed so we can keep it basic. However, if you made socks as part of your outfit, you might not want to cover them up with shoes! Belts/handbags/hats....if they're made out of socks as well and are part of the overall outfit, those would be allowed. Emphasis is on the outfit rather than accessories.

--iron-on patches would be a no, unless the patch was one that you made out of socks

--ideally, the lace/ribbon would be used as it was on the sock (as a trim, for example?) but it doesn't have to be. The sock would need to be used as well; otherwise it might seem that an entrant is trying to skirt the rules about lace and ribbon by taking them off a sock and then not using the sock itself.

It means the dolls will have no faceup. They will still have a resin tone (generally a normal skin of some type, but we always leave that decision to our generous donors as far as what the resin color will be). Good luck, everyone was new at some point!

Questions aren't silly, it helps things get clarified for everyone.

      1. Tights or leggings are fine as long as they're made out of materials classified as 'socks' for the contest. I know a basic daily outfit for me includes leggings (when it's not too hot to wear them!).

      2. Yes, accessories can be created. The outfit should be the emphasis, though, not the accessories.

Yes, as long as they are not being used in place of fabric/socks.

Yes and yes. Who doesn't layer when the weather calls for it? (And, wow, everyone's coming up with some great ideas already!)

As I stated in an earlier reply, the focus of the challenge is on the outfit rather than accessories; however, 'creative use of materials' is one of our judging criteria. Accessories should always be there to complement an outfit rather than dominate it. :)

Yes! Hoodies are definitely allowed. Cardigans as long as they are sewn and not made via knit or crochet are also allowed.

Basically, socks that you've bought at some point. Socks do not have to be bought new for this contest; upcycling is often the name of the game in sock couture! They can absolutely be themed, one of the judging criteria is 'most interesting socks used', after all. Designs or prints on them are great! If you have an idea for how to use toe socks, go for it!

Our main reason for designating socks as 'commercially available' is that most people do not make their own socks, and if they did, I'm not sure they'd want to rip them apart after spending all the necessary time to make them.

If I haven't gotten to anyone's question yet, I will do so tomorrow or @cowpewter will. Sleep is a necessity!

    33. Alright, thank you for answering all those questions or ours. :D
Now le's get to it !!!

      Have fun guys ^^
I can't wait to see all of your entries!

    34. Yes! As long as the frills are made from your socks, frill away.

If you make undergarments, you may want to include shots of just the undergarments in your details collage photo.

Shoes are fine, though as said previously, if you make your doll socks from socks, you might want to show them off without shoes.

There will be multiple photos. A front view, a back view, a collage of details, a styled shot of your doll with wearing the outfit, and a materials shot showing all your socks before you start cutting them up.

You can use embroidery thread to embroider embellishments on your existing sock fabric. You may not use embroidery thread in place of textiles, for example crocheting or knitting with it, or using it as a structural piece of the outfit.

      • x 2
    35. Thanks for the clarification! :)

    36. Are we allowed to use separating zippers as part of our notions? (I just wanted to make sure that wouldn’t be a potential disqualifier)

    37. May we use more than one kind of sock? ...the idea I am dreaming up could use 2 different colored socks.

    38. For the beads and buttons embellishments, are flatbacks that are glued on ok? Or does it have to be something that is sewn?

    39. Sorry double post XD

    40. Are we allowed to use fabric paint or dye?

    41. I'll try this.

    42. What size should the photos be? Same as the other contest, 600 pixels on the longest side? Thanks!

    43. Just went through the massive sock pile we have. I. AM. SO. EXCITED! This is such an awesome event, I just hope I'll be able to finish in time, as I'm a newbie at sewing. Good luck to everyone!

    44. Wow, what a fun contest! I would love to enter an outfit if I have time!

Is there a way not to compete for the prize, but just for fun? Neither of the dolls so generously donated are in my style, but it seems rude not to keep or to sell prizes in the extremely unlikely outcome that I won one of them.

      Thank you!

      • x 1
    45. Zippers are fine.

Absolutely! There is no limit on number or colors of socks you may use!

I will talk with @cowpewter about this question! Since I don't sew myself, I may have a different view and I want us to be consistent for the contest. :)

I will talk with @cowpewter! I am leaning towards yes, but again, I want to be sure we are consistent, not only with each other but with the spirit of the contest. :)

      Yes please!

Yes, you can absolutely enter for fun!

    46. Also, not to double-post but I'll abuse my modly powers just this once: the form in the first post is live! If you are ambitious and have completed your sock extravaganza items already, go ahead and enter!

Entries must be received by August 17th 11:59 pm EDT (UTC -4:00).

    47. Is it allowed to use glue as fray–check? Can we use acrylic paint to improve textile?

    49. Hi @InvisibleWings, just wondering if small bits of silver chain can be used as embellishments.

    50. ... seriously, as a seamstress I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be making a doll outfit out of old stained socks !!!

      This is fun! =^.^=

    51. My outfit is coming together. I forgot how stretchy socks could be when sewing with them. I've had to remake a piece as it turned out way way too stretched out and did not fit my model anymore oops lol

    52. yeah, I don't trust my sewing machine for this kind of knitted jersey, so I'm sewing everything by hand ><

    53. that is a good idea! doing that for some of it it;s easier for some of it

    54. Do we need to take pictures of the original socks/materials/notions before cutting them? If so, can we make a collage? I'm experienced with sewing but I've never used socks before. If I ruin one pair of socks, I'd take extra pictures of a new pair used to make my entry.

    55. In the entry what does this mean?

      Method and Materials Used:

What does method mean? I will be hand sewing it or do I need to say in detail I cut up sock A and sewed it to a cut from sock B and then sewed some buttons on?

@Petit Lapin Lunaire Yes, in the entry form on the first page if you click on it, you will see the photo requirements. One of the photos required is of the socks before cutting

    56. I'm getting my socks on Friday when I get paid ^_^ this feels so weird and hilarious!

    57. I got so excited for this I spent my entire day planning and sewing my entry :3 I can’t wait to see what everybody does!

    58. @Zavrinas @Nefla

Fabric paint and dye are fine for this contest. After some discussion, we have decided that embellishments need to be sewn on.

Yes, as long as it is sewn on.

Yes, please. A collage image is fine for your materials picture.

Saying that you are hand sewing is fine. I believe the method question was probably more applicable in some of the past couture contests where the construction and patterning was more complicated; since this one is erring on the side of the simple (and since some of the entrants are noting that they have an easier time hand sewing rather than machine sewing with socks) most entries will likely be hand sewn.

Which is so much more than I can do. :whee::frownyblush::shudder
