Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #2: Timepiece

Aug 13, 2016

    1. Challenge #2: Timepiece

This is the second of three feats of skill on the road to winning one of three fabulous rewards as announced HERE.

Building environments for ball-jointed dolls adds depth, realism and uniqueness to their custom identities. We'd like you to create a unique, in-scale prop that perfectly suits your doll. Use your knowledge of your doll's personality, personal history, or place in time to create a timepiece that relates to your doll.

      Description

Make a clock prop for your doll that reflects the character, history or period of your doll.

      • Your clock must be in-scale with your doll's environment.
      • Your clock must be made from scratch (no decorating an existing clock).
      • Your clock must have movable arms (it does not actually need to tell time).
      • Your clock may contain a ready-made clock movement if you do want it to function.
      • Your clock may be wall-mounted or freestanding (no wristwatches or pocket watches).

      Materials:

      • Any repurposed and recycled goods, plus $20 of purchased necessities. You may cut up your own household items or clothing, you may dumpster dive, you may cannibalize an old watch to get the hands, and you may find that you don't need to spend very much money at all.
      • Basic tools and adhesives like scissors or other cutting blades, non-decorative tape and glue, needle and thread, etc. are not counted as part of your materials.
      • You may disassemble an existing clock for the movement, the hands, or the bezel, but no other parts of the clock body may be repurposed.
      • Your $20 budget cannot be rolled over into the next challenge if you do not spend it.

Repurposed vs Purchased Goods: After you've exhausted your craft stash, scrounged around your house, looked through your back yard, combed the streets for usable materials, failed to beg some recycling from your neighbor's garage hoard, and you still don't have what you need, necessitating that you must go and buy something, those are the things that come out of your budget. The smartest competitors would look around, scrounge with all their might and not buy a thing and turn out something amazing. That way they can have a chance at a prize with no monetary input of their own. The second smartest would make something amazing with found parts plus a small part of their budget spent. We want to encourage contestants to consume as little brand new materials as possible.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Rules

      1. Each member may submit one entry.
      2. The prop must have been created specifically for this contest.
      3. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.
      4. Props must be modeled beside on-topic dolls.
      5. No posting entries or other photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after the Triathlon is closed. Describing your in-process or finished outfit or posting pictures before the end of the contest (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

Who May Compete for the Prizes?

This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2016.
Participants must be members in good standing. Members may not participate if they have a marketplace suspension, marketplace ban, unresolved transactions or a paging status.
Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it. It is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. Select "I am NOT competing for the prize" on your submission form if you do not intend to keep the prize.

      Entering for Fun

It is possible to participate just for fun, without competing for the prizes. Select "I am NOT competing for the prize" on your entry submissions. Entries will be displayed along with the competing entries, but will not appear on the voting forms.
Current Den of Angels staff may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Members who have won prizes in past Triathlon contests may participate for fun, but they are not eligible for a prize in this contest.
Recast supporters may participate for fun using on-topic dolls, but they are not eligible for the prizes from these donors.
If you have a question about your eligibility, please post in Ask the Moderators.

IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, revealing your alias, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

      Submission

You will need to provide the following photos:
      1. a front view of your timepiece
      2. a back view of your timepiece
      3. a collage image showing notable details
      4. a photo of recycled materials used (before use)
      5. a photo of purchased materials used (before use)
      6. a photo of receipts for purchased materials (if you have a photo #5 you must have a photo #6)
      7. a style shot of the completed timepiece with your doll wearing the outfit from Challenge #1

Photos must be submitted in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using the entry form link below.
Do not PM the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

      ENTRY FORM

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries is Saturday August 20th 11:59pm EDT.
If you're unsure of your local time, please check this COUNTDOWN CLOCK. Entries received after this time will be disregarded.

      Voting Period: Monday, August 22nd 12am - Saturday, August 27th 11:59pm EDT

      Voting, Points and Prizes

This is the first task in the quest for the Triathlon prizes. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for a prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all three challenges.

      • Votes will be submitted and tallied privately. The totals will be made available upon completion of voting for each challenge.
      • Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.
      • We will also be employing the same codename system as in past years - pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used in past contests.

Members will have four vote points to distribute to four different entries based on the following criteria:

      • Craftsmanship and attention to detail
      • Complementary styling to doll
      • Creative use of materials
      • Aesthetic appeal

Best of luck and don't forget to get some sleep this week!

    2. it the clock to be in relation to the theme of my outfit or my dolls existing character outside of the contest?

    3. Just to be sure, I can buy a cheap clock for the mechanics as long as those are all I use?

    4. Can photoshop or some other software be used to create the face and/or numbers of the clock? (Sorry, ASK THE MODERATOR still is not working).

    5. Hmmm... interesting and a lot better than what my dreams about this challenge were, including finding a way to put the outfit from this challenge on to a completely different sized doll. :P
Going to have to brainstorm some ideas on this one.

    6. Your choice!

      Yes.

      No.
What sort of error are you getting when you try to post a new thread in Ask the Mods?

    7. Can I use a different one of my dolls as inspiration from my clock than the doll I used the first challenge?

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw that the stylized photo has to be with the original doll.

    8. This is a screen shot of the error message:

    9. @kedrian I fixed the link in the first post, but you can always reach Ask the Moderators from the Help tab in the navigation.

    10. When you have no idea what time era your first entry fits into ... rofl. This will be fun!

    11. Oooh this one sounds like fun, I already have a few ideas ticking at me..

    12. when you say the clock may be morking, does it HAVE to work or can it just be aesthetical?

    13. If you include a working clock, since it's optional, does it count towards the total materials budget? (wondering if I do include a mechanism whether to cannibalise something pre-existing or buy parts)

    14. I think I know the answer to this but does moveable hands mean just that the hands must not be fixed in one position or do we actually need to be able to access the hands to move them? (ie is it a problem if the hands are sealed inside the clock or behind a bezel?)

    15. With in-scale with your dolls environment - does this mean same size eg. 1/4, 1/3 etc or something else?

    16. Interesting... I wonder how many super tiny clocks there will be... XD I'm in the 1/4 size category and I'm already like hmmm...

    17. So, with the no wristwatches rule, does that mean you can't make a Doll sized watch, or that you can't use the parts out of a people sized watch?

    18. Oh gods the first thing that came to mind would be amazing...but it definitely would be a challenge! I wish everyone so much luck this round it will be difficult but fun!

    19. :wiggle:wiggle

    20. Hourglasses could be OK, right?

    21. Should craft paint/stain that you have on hand and plan to use be included in the photograph of "recycled materials"?

    22. @Luckyl, obviously I'm not a mod, but my entry photos from two years ago definitely have all the stains and paints (and even markers) I used; since they're a visible part of the construction, not "non decorative tape or glue," they probably should be in the photos (recycled if already on hand, or purchased if bought for this event).

    23. I'm hoping someone does a working sundial... That would be so cool!! :)

    24. I was wondering this too... if I were to make a wall clock (for example) would it have to be a 1/4 scale wall clock, or a clock scaled to me? Does the doll need to interact with the clock?

Also, what about sundials or waterclocks? they don't have movable pieces, do they still count? Does it have to be concentrated on time, or could we make an astronomical type clock?

    25. Your clock does not have to tell time on its own, but you will need to be able to depict the passage of time.

If you purchase a clock or clock movement for this challenge, you must include it in your materials budget. If you cannibalize something you already own, it's a re-purposed item.

You will need to be able to depict the passage of time, so you will need to demonstrate that the hands can move. This means you will have to create a bezel that can open or some way to move the hands from behind.

Clock sizes can vary drastically, but the scale should be within reason. Big Ben would not fit in an average living room, so use your best judgement.

No doll-sized watches, but using parts from a human-sized watch is fine!

An hourglass is a timer rather than a timepiece that can depict a particular hour of the day, so no.

A 1/4 sized doll should have a 1/4 sized wall clock (which still gives you a lot of leeway).
One of the photos does require the doll and the clock to share a frame.
A sundial has "hands" so that would be okay. You need to be able to depict the passage of time and a particular moment in time, so keep in mind that older styles of clocks will still need to achieve this in your images.

    26. thank you for the information! I went ahead and included every possible color of paint/stain/glitter etc. I may possibly use in the photo.
It is quite a mass of materials, but better safe than sorry.:3nodding:

    27. My interpretation of this is that we will need to do multiple shots of the clock showing different times. Which photo do you want that shown in? If it is in the photo with the doll in it is it ok to do a collage that shows different moments in time?

    28. If we use some of the same materials from challenge one do we have to take new pictures or can we use the pictures from our first entry?

    29. For the purposes of this challenge, showing a different time in the front view and the style shot is sufficient.

Please take a new photo to avoid confusion. :)

    30. Alright, will do. :D

    31. I know people can participate in the different rounds for fun, so how would we photograph a doll in an outfit from round 1 if we didn't do round 1? :?

    32. I'm sure that if you are participating for fun, you don't need to have your doll wear a certain outfit.

    33. If it's just for fun, don't worry about the outfit. :)

    34. Ok cool! Thanks, St. James! It was bolded in the rules so I got nervous about it. :sweat

    35. Is it ok to submit a collage of our materials? I am finding my initial recycled materials are changing and I am adding a few things as I go based on how the project is coming together. The item is well under way and I cannot regroup all the original items since some are permanently altered and add new ones to one photo. Anyone else having this issue?

    36. I am for sure. I think they said that it was ok in the last round, but don't quote me.

      • x 1
    37. @Luckyl @Atomiczombiephd it's absolutely ok --> Post #23 from the last challenge ^^ Sounds like it'll be an awesome clock Luckyl... can't wait to see it!!

    38. i'm having the exact same issue i finally got the hardest part on my clock done but my clock it not looking quite like my original concept and I've not used some of my materials and added new ones in as i go.. but i did take a quick photo of new materials before i use them. in the last round i asked about making the material picture a collage and was told we could.

    39. Thanks for the info and help! I am letting myself go wild on this one...Hope it all comes together.:sweat I sure am having fun with it though!

I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

      • x 1
    40. This is such an exciting one, love it!! I might be biting off more than I can chew, but it's the only thing that really makes sense for my character. Here's hoping it gets done in time! Good luck everyone:D

      • x 1
    41. Can we have an additional doll in the style shot, or only the doll we used in the first challenge?

    42. You may have other dolls in your style shot. :)

    43. Thanks!;)

    44. I finally got my inspiration together for this challenge and now I'm running into the technical difficulty side of it all. Pieces A and B were easy enough but Piece C is proving... challenging. I'll be happy when all the pieces are one piece :sweat

    45. I may have been a bit over ambitious with this one, I may not get done in time but it is fun! I wish everyone more luck then I'm having lol

    46. This has definitely been challenging, but I think I am going to have everything put together in time to snap pics for my entry. *crosses fingers*

    47. Construction on this one has definitely been tricky. Gotta roll with it! Keep it up everyone, we got this!

      • x 1
    48. Ack - construction is just about done now, "just" need to decorate... Yeah "just". As others have already said, I may have been a tad ambitious! :doh

    49. Tad ambitious seems to be the consensus around here! I have just figured out construction and design, now to put it all together.
Hope it comes together like I think it will....(:?:nowords:*_*

    50. Good luck everyone! *scratches head and stares at ever-growing stack of parts and inspiration pics* **sigh** no sleep

    51. I think I managed to get it all done in one day o_o A good thing, since I only have Friday to get pictures taken, but I hope I don't end up looking at it tomorrow and going "what was I thinking?!" :sweat at least I have time to tweak if I need to.

    52. I spent way to much time tonight trying to fix and get the one part right :P still so much to do here is hopping I get it all done by Saturday so i have time for pictures with good lighting. Good luck everyone!

    53. I'm hoping I'll get enough done that I'll be able to take pics on Friday but I've still got a bit of work ahead of me.
Good luck guys! We can do this!

    54. I've been having a hard time with this one. My first idea would have taken me more than a week to work on it so I decided to do something simple. I barely got the first piece of it done and it definitely seems very weak compared to the piece I made last round. Hopefully when I get more pieces put together, it'll look much better.

    55. This turned out to be taking more time than I thought :P my base is pretty much ready but that leaves all the decoration still!

    56. This one's really hard … Maybe I should have thought about the construction before making the design? :sweat
(I don't even dare to think what will be the topic for round #3 …)

    57. Funny enough I found this round fairly easy. Granted, I kept things simple and clean to go well with my first entry and I'm not completely finished by now, but hopefully I should be by this time tomorrow.

I'm excited to see what all of you did for this challenge :)!

    58. I have never taken part in a contest like this before, and I find it very enjoyable. It gives me the chance to really get into the Flow and just concentrate on the item I'm working on. My clock also seems to be almost finished. :)

Looking forward to seeing all your entries!

    59. Just submitted my entry good luck every one i cant wait to see every ones timepieces!!! this was quite a lot harder than i first thought but super fun!

    60. I worked on my clock this morning. I think I'm almost done. I'll finish the little details on it tomorrow and I'll submit pictures on Saturday.
