That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Too orange/too light tan skin and dolls with open mouth.
I have a few with open mouth but it's usually barely visible or painted in a way you don't see it, but I really hate it when dolls look all ": O" because it makes them look...dumb.
It also looks like they have breathing problems and I hate it when someone breathes loudly for no particular reason (don't ask, it's just a big pet peeve of mine), if I look at such a face I can hear them breathing and snorting in my mind -_-

Also huge swollen lips, especially with teeth visible, that look like they got punched or dolls that make an overall expression that would look ridiculous if you'd tried to copy it and look at yourself in a mirror.

    2. One turnoff for me is those holes in the mouth, like on the sides. I get why they are there in some sculpts - to look like the lips are a little bit apart in that spot, but I don't care for them. I think it looks a bit unnatural. Not in all dolls! Some sculpts look great with those "holes" but I prefer the doll without it :) I also agree about the boobs. I don't really care for too small breastsize either. I think clothes look better with a little something up there ^^ But then again, it totally depends on the dol, what you are going for, the age of the doll etc. Everything is relative. I just tend do go for larger breasts :)

    3. There are some turn offs that are very personally my own, and i do not mean to offend anybody who has a different point of view. I had to say this.
      -
      1) i really dont like cheap doll companies, and i will not name the companies i consider cheap, but i dislike every single doll those companies make, because they just dont look good. (No matter how awesome the makeup is or how awesome the outfit is) (they might not even be cheap price-wise, but they just look off to me)

      2) i really hate when knee/elbow joints are bulky, i cant really explain what i mean in detail, but in some doll bodies the joints look good and work well, and in others it looks like they didnt spend even a minute sculpting it (just a huge sausage or something)
Example: fairyland joints are gorgeous. I dont want to name specific companies whose bodies really repel me.

      3) this is not for companies, but i dont like it when owners clothe their dolls in cut out socks and draw their makeup with a sharpie or something, especially on very expensive/limited ones. Practice and creativity are awesome, but doing it on something else before doing it on the doll. Honestly i myself have a doll that needs clothes and makeup to be done and organized, but until i do, they she will wait in her box.
Again, i really dont want to offend anybody, and if they do it and like it, its their business into which im not going to intrude. Ill just quietly like other dolls, and take forever to clothe my dolls because im a poor student

    4. I bought a Soulkid girl on the double jointed body and hated everything about it. The joints were so ugly and she didn't pose that great, her boobs were massive and round and she had weird legs with a funny edge running down the front of them both. After that I knew never to go for a mature body again.

There are so many pretty girl faces that look young and the doll makers put them on mature bodies... I hate that. I also hate that most of the mature male dolls seem to have androgynous faces.

      • x 1
    5. I don't really like white skin, but it's not a turn off... I guess what bothers me the most are BJDs that have theirs noses too thin! It's so weird, specially when you look at their profile (I don't know if profile is the right word, I hope you understand lol).

    6. I had the same problem with that joint today on my girl. It drove me mad.

I think my pet peeves have already been mentioned, but anyway... I agree with the comments about false breasts. Case in point being the MNF moe-line body. Great body until you spot the two bald heads poking up from her top. I appreciate that for some people that style works but not for me. Pointy nipples are a bit of a bug bear too.

My other pet peeve is unrealistic hands. I sold a doll once because her hands just really bugged me, they just seemed to big and flat with no real movement to them.

    7. Honestly for me, if the nose isn't right, my decision on whether or not to buy a certain doll will change. Some have the perfect face, everything is perfect, but then I'll see a close-up or a side profile and the nose is too big, too small, too different from what I had in mind and it becomes an automatic no.

Also the doll has to have the right faceup. It's awful but sometimes theyre just too light or too dark and I cant. I just can't get a doll when the coloring isn't right for the character I have in mind.

    8. I bought a white skin F/22 Kun only a short while ago. And sent her off for a custom face-up by Nomyens: http://www.flickr.com/photos/87418672@N07/12244584884/ When she got home I took her out, and I disliked her immediately. It wasn't the face-up or the skin tone, it was the shape of her head. Before her face-up, I had no issues with the shape of her head. But I don't know... It was just too round, and big for my liking. So I suppose dolls with big heads put me off. And also (I don't know why) but Fairyland Chloe's put me off now too. |:

    9. My biggest turn-off/pet peeve are face-ups that look "nude"- when dolls look like they don't even have a face-up. I understand that not all dolls need to have eye shadow and noticeable blushing or makeup, but even contour shading on boys or makeup-less girls is better than just a nude, hardly-changed face.

    10. Bad hands. Honestly..i bought my RS Gang because everything was ok about him and I loved his hands. They are my favorite part of him. There was another doll I was looking at awhile ago and the sausage fingers were unbearable.

    11. It may be strange, but I strongly dislike noses that are abnormally short, pointed, or sloped. Eyes that are semi-closed; the ones where there's a tiny, tiny opening, and also eyes that are too close together.

    12. There are a few things that will turn me off a doll
      - Dolls that have visible ribs (I don't mind slim dolls, not just showing ribs skinny)
      - The swollen/Botox/frost bitten lips.
      - Over mature child sculpts, dolls that are supposed to be >13 years old but still have fully developed body's. I know that some of them can pass as early bloomers, but most children/early teens don't have the adult body proportions.

    13. I really dislike fake-looking breasts on dolls, which often happens when the breasts are too large. I also dislike when the eyesockets are too big, or spread too far apart. The doll starts to look really alien, which is a turn-off for me unless I'm looking for that kind of thing.

    14. I'm not a fan of comically large breasts like many other people, but also the extreme sculpted expressions. I've seen them well done and some can be really cute but I can't imagine owning one of those dolls myself. It just isn't my taste.

    15. I am not really a fan of huge or awkward shaped lips or of sculpts with extreme facial expressions.
Same goes for tongues, I am not a fan.

    16. A huge [and weird] thing for me is the eyes. I need to be able to see some.... intelligence in them. Some emotion. The vast majority of dolls look kind of.... well... vapid to me. I can't see anything in their eyes other than "pretty doll-face".

I can't really explain it; the closest non-woo explanation I have is that it probably has something to do with subtle sculpting of musculature in the face and sculpt definition.

But it's how I judge all of my potential doll purchases, if we're talking about specifically one thing that will make or break a doll for me.

      Other things are more arbitrary.

    17. I would have to say overly exaggerated lips or facial expressions. I just... don't like them. :/

    18. With bodies, what turns me off would be unaesthetic looking chests and nipples (like unrealistic sculpted breasts and those nipples that look like buttons that were just popped on there!) as well as hands! When they look too simple it usually isn't pretty enough for me... hands have to look right!

Faces hmm... that's more difficult... I love male dolls but some of the too realistic manly looking ones just aren't for me, so very manly features. Other than that it's just ordinary features that make the whole face look off to me that I dislike, for example if the eyes are too far apart or the mouth sits too low.
I like heads that have some character in them, at least to me, so ones that look blank or boring I wouldn't buy either.

    19. If I had to pick one, I'd say hands. I can LOVE a whole doll, body and all but if the hands are ugly or plain, and I think it'd be difficult to match with another company, I'll pass. If they're just a little plain and I think I can mod them, maybe.

    20. I'm not very fond of dolls that show teeth (I'm fine with vampire teeth). I'm not quite sure why, though. I also don't like bodies with really huge breasts or those really big breasts that look like two randomly placed half circles on their chest. It's also looks like it would be a hassle to find clothes for, too, in my opinion.

    21. I'm not a huge fan of vampire teeth, or, at least, I haven't seen many I really like. Teeth in general, for me, depends on the sculpt and all. The Only-Doll girl I'm getting has teeth, but they're cute with her mouth as well, so I don't mind them.
I'm also not a big fan of overly pointy nipples, or too huge breasts. I've seen some that just don't look like they fit right on the body, cause they're too big, just too awkward looking.

    22. I really dislike dolls with overdone expressions. I feel like it really limits the doll's personality. The one that completely bothers me is the Crying Mona from Ringdoll. I shudder when I see that face! :o

    23. I really hate poorly designed double joints that gap when the arm or leg is bent! So annoying! I prefer single joints or well designed double joints that look more natural. I also hate bodies that have tube arms & legs with no muscle definition at all. Wrists that have very limited movement bug me too. Basically if a doll has a poorly executed body I'll pass on it, or try to hybrid.

    24. When the eyes are wayyyy tooo big (in fact when any body part is noticeably out of proportion). I like the dolls to look realistic.

    25. I think the biggest one is long, sharp, super pointy, or slender noses which it seems a ton of bjds have... So that helps narrow down some for me when I look. Sometimes dolls can look fantastic from the front & then the side profile will look like a random pinch of resin poking out from the rest of the face. Cartoony looking dolls with big heads aren't my thing much either, unless they look other worldly or somewhat alien. I can see the appeal for others, but otherwise I tend to lean towards more realistic features? Also there is certain breasts, though breast sizes don't bother me. Sometimes there will be child size chests with full sculpted nipples which, to me, looks off. That, or large boobs that look like half a circle or resembles half a doll eye molded to the body. XD.
Cant get over the fake double joints. The joints with a nub attached to the elbow looking like a double jointed nub, when its actually molded to part of the knee or elbow. This makes a bothersome gap with posing. Now that I think about it I try to look for dolls with less shown joints. A smooth torso, smooth knees and such... This gives the appeal that I can show off their doll body comfortably in clothing where the belly or knees would show.
      ... Hmm... Guess I'm a bit fussy... Heh. ^^;

    26. My biggest turn-off number one would be melon boobs. You know, when you cut the fruit in half and glue it to the chest of the doll. Number two is the overdone expressions on some dolls. A bit of emotion is okay, but the ones like the girl from Ringdoll... just no. Third would be very anime-like dolls. It's just not the style I like.

    27. I know it may sound weird but I'm not too fund of open eyed dolls. I always fall in love with half closed or droopy eyed dolls. I don't think open eyed dolls are ugly or anything ( I love tons of owner pictures with open eyed dolls ) but they're not something I would buy.
For example, the Soom Dia after school edition; I love the romantic head, but as soon as I saw the open eyed version, I immediately lost interest.

    28. I really dislike sad or angry expressions. I want a doll to make me feel happy when I look at it, and smiles or even a neutral expression does that for me. Crying dolls make me want to cry too. :(

Melon boobs and pointy nipples are another turn-off. I want the shape to be realistic but I don't let my nipples show through my clothes and my doll's shouldn't either.

    29. I got my first doll not that long ago. Her boobs are huge, I've seen much bigger than hers but they are just so big! She doesn't have any tops yet so they are just so in-your-face. And going off the fat thighs comment, I've only seen fantasy themed dolls with large thighs and it works on them but I bet it looks pretty weird on non fantasy dolls.

    30. I usually don't like dolls with teeth. Poor face-up is a problem too.

    31. For me it would be:
      - Big breasts. Like a lot of people have already said. Just way too big in proportion with the rest of the body or big and squashed that they only look "natural" if the doll is wearing a corset. I dislike this that much that I prefer dolls that are the opposite and more flat chested.
      - Fantasy skin colors. I see dolls people have that have nice rare colors, but I couldn't have one myself.
      - White skin color. Not always, it depends a lot on the tone, but sometimes it's just way too white for my like.
      - 1/6 dolls with a childish expression/face on a mature looking body (with breasts or things like that).
      - Dolls with marked ribs.
      - Male dolls that are basically all muscle. It depends on the sculpt but sometimes I think it's a bit like the breasts, too much.
      - Male dolls with a bump instead of a penis, just weird.

Probably I'm missing some, but these are the first ones that have come to mind.

    32. Painted on fangs. I also don't like sculpted fangs on mouths that are completely closed.

    33. So far, the only thing that I've found I didn't like is the squished breasts that some dolls have. It just doesn't look right!

    34. All companies follow the torso-to-arm rule, and will make the bend in the elbow halfway down the torso like it normally is on a human body. But for whatever reason, some bodies look like the arm doesn't go far enough down the leg, to where it's at crotch level, and so even though they got a technical aspect correct, overall it's just off. I hate that so much. If the arms look too short compared to the legs, I will not buy the doll.

I also don't like really realistic face sculpts on bodies with a tiny neck. It's so offputting to me. Or if the feet and hands are vastly different sizes? (5 Star Doll comes to mind...)

    35. For me it dolls with giant breast that is squeezed together. And dolls with anime faces. I can appreciate them and look at them. But never imagine me owning one.

      • x 1
    36. Giant hands! Anything that reminds me of the yaoi hands meme is a no for me.

    37. For me it's similar to what most of you said:
-I don't like the joints gaping or not meeting in simple poses (I like smooth lines specially the legs better in stockings)
-I don't like giant boobs it's just too much, but i don't like flat chest either on mature/adult styled doll bodies
-Super expressive not super angry or sad or happy. If it was an inter-changable option that might be ok for some photos
-pure white resin it's just lifeless to me unless on a vampire doll
-Teeth >.< I hate teeth dont like em vampire doll or not. Could be i just saw none I like (I do like Supiadoll Haeun only allowance)
-Open mouths is just weird (I do want Sq-labs Navi it's slightly open i guess)
-Super mature child dolls never seen a 6 year old with a b-c cup
      -last but not least large noses, eyes, foreheads, hands,eh i usually ignore once i see those ^^;

Now that I look at it all I seem picky ._. lol

    38. Oh man oh man oh man.

      - Too big boobs. This is the main reason I prefer boy dolls, not saying there aren't small chested girls, but the majority...seriously.
      - Skinny noses. I like wide set noses and jawlines.
      - Tiny muscles. Either give me a man or a young boy. The MSD with too detailed baby muscles freak me out.

    39. One of my turn-offs is definitely the same as yours, TS.
      I also don't like child-like faces on adult-like bodies. ;x

    40. I don't like dolls with big hands~ I prefer the slender delicate style for fingers and hands.

I, like many others here, also don't like the super huge perky boobs. I get turned off by that really quickly

Finally, I'm only very picky when it comes to brow shelves on dolls. Sometimes they're wonderful and varied and other times you either get a super grumpy or even cave man look! Not my thing ;)

    41. Bad quality pictures. On MiroDoll, their doll, Wind? Have you looked at the second picture? She looks like a fetus and it's scary. Then I see owner photos (which I couldn't find any good ones on Google Images) and she looks fine, but then I worry that I'll wind up with a crappy looking doll.
If their eyes are too close together, if their legs look super sickly skinny for no good reason, or if their head is too big or too small.
Resin quality though... probably the most important thing. It can look like anything from Dollar Store plastic to the most beautiful... thing... used to make a doll. If I had a doll meetup, I would definitely keep a checklist of what dolls I'd like and if I found them with an owner, just so I could figure out the quality of resin :P

    42. There are a lot of things I'm just not interested in, but the one that's so ubiquitous that I'm having trouble finding what I actually want is TOO MANY MUSCLES. I'm having a really hard time finding a boy body in the height range I want that doesn't have a six-pack.

I also have a hard time finding girl dolls I like because all their noses are just too small for my tastes.

    43. For me it's the nose. If the nose is too small and pointy it'll ruin the whole sculpt for me. Though it's a big turn off for me it's the last thing I think of to look at.

But I can tolerate small pointy noses on female dolls. It's cute on them.

    44. The headmold - specifically size and placement of the eye holes and the lips. Noses don't bother me too much.

    45. Pictures of dolls shown smoking - doesn't matter how much I would otherwise like that sculpt If they're shown smoking it puts me right off it.

Another is childlike faces on mature (busty/shapely) bodies - that just creeps me out.

      Teddy

      • x 1
    46. Ugly hands. I can't handle owning a doll with ugly hands, especially when the fingers look like noodles. Bleh. Noodle limbs are out too.

I hate when vampire dolls' teeth look like they're sticking forward? Like idk how those choppers are supposed to work, buddy, but that looks wonk.

Also really weird pecs and abs make me back away too. I vastly prefer form over function in my dolls, hence my many Iplehouse dolls. They can't pose, but they're pretty.

I used to not dig dolls with distinct expressions on their faces, but then IH Claude happened to me and now I really love them. I want more smiley dolls!! But those dolls with the squinched up crying faces make me really uncomf, and I wouldn't want a doll that looks too pouty or upset.

OH! Also, I hate when they have those REALLY prominent nipples?? Is that really necessary?

    47. I agree with the pouty lip thing, and the "baby lips" on anything other than a baby doll... it.. it's just.. sometimes I forget i'm looking at dolls and see one and think "oh gosh did that poor girl try and eat a bee?"

One other thing that....I dunno more suprised me than anything: being anatomically correct in their groin areas. That DID make me wonder what BJDs were used for when I first got into the hobby... also ones that have jointed "tackle" ...do...do you really NEED that? WHY?

    48. I really have to like the dolls face and facial expression. That is most important to me.

    49. Agree with the original post, giant silicon-looking boobs are a giant turnoff for me...I get that a lot of the pushed-together boobs are supposed to simulate natural cleavage when dressed, but my dolls spend a lot of time naked (gotta admire the craftsmanship!) and if the boobs look ridiculous unclothed I just can't deal.

Another turn-off is straight lines...if a sculpt has straight lines in its sculpting, I can't stand it...there's no straight lines in the natural body, nor should there be in my dolls~!

    50. Open mouths--I'm not a fan of them in model pictures of humans, and I don't really like them in dolls either.

    51. A massive schnoz. I can't stand noses that are too big, angular, or have weird stylized nostrils. Droopy eyes used to be a deal breaker as well, but I've come around on to them a bit. Grossly exaggerated bodies/sculpts are another turn off, like a lot of others have said. One that is a little weird I suppose is owner pictures or lack thereof. Whenever I find a doll I like I go on a web search for the sculpt to see what others have done with it. If I either can't find any pictures or I don't like what I find then I can't bring myself to get the doll. If the doll doesn't look good without the factory makeup or if it has poor posing/stability then I don't want it.

    52. I really dislike dolls with duck lips! They really bother me.

Like cheesedemon88, I also don't like big boobs that are so big that they are squeezed together. I find them too provocative for my liking.

    53. The current trend of 60cm and taller boys with 'anorexic' looking bodies.

You know the type that every other doll company (Except Iplehouse just to name a few.) is currently churning out, super skinny stretched long bodies with 'muscle' carved onto them.

I like muscle, but not when they look half starved.
Half of them makes me want to feed them an extra sandwich or something.

    54. Big boobs, big feet and big hands and I've never been a fan of tanned dolls either.

    55. My biggest turn off with dolls is probably baby face on an adult body, it's just creepy.

    56. Too much 'paper-like' face. Hard to explain, but some dolls seems like 2D, Light winding in face... complicated to explain. but yeap, it is.

    57. I despise eyes that are like teeny tiny holes like a seed and not at all in proportion with the face same goes for eyes that are too large.

    58. I'm pretty picky about dolls as it is. I scrutinize the sculpt more than the body, to be honest. Some sculpts just don't sit well with me. There's something about certain faces that I simply don't like. For example, a face with eyes that are too close to each other will turn me off to the doll. A jaw that is too square isn't something that I'm prone to like. A male face that could pass for a female is a face that I will simply pass over. If the face has a very pointy and long nose, that doll is out of the running, too. Troll-looking dolls are a turn off, as well. I just can't see myself enjoying troll-type dolls. Furthermore, the dolls with the button noses, big eyes, and sad looking expressions are a no-no for me.

    59. Usually overly thick lips, and sometimes when I see a doll I might potentially like, then see them without a faceup... :sweat the non-faceup version scared me too much for me to look at the doll again.
