That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Boys with too full lips and curvy feminine shapes. Both things turn me off completely on a doll.

      • x 1
    2. Strange proportions on realistic looking dolls. I don't bother if they are art dolls though. I'm very picky with doll bodys- I only like the total natural ones. Even a bit too long legs/ too thin body turn me off.
Or if they have a weird face- I'm usually thinking of the creepy baby doll head I saw in google then (sorry can't find the picture). It's still haunting me! XDD
Further I don't like too small hands and feets.

    3. I have a list of things in no particular order:

-Large breasts (Like, C+ cup), breasts that are smushed together, or look as though they were added on as an afterthought
-Overly brown lips on normal/white skinned dolls (I know this can be changed but when viewing a doll, I spend a lot of time looking at company photos. >_>)
-One-expression sculpts (I can think of one in particular but a lot of people have/love them... It's cute and all but not a lot of versatility for images, imo)
-Pouty lower lips (On some sculpts it works but on others it just looks like they have a very bad under bite)
-Small lips in relation to the rest of the face - especially when the eyes are bigger
-Open-mouthed sculpts (The picture was posted a few pages back.. -shudder-)
-Teeth (Fangs are okay.. as long as they're small and not too close together or too far apart)
-'Long' faces - Either the mouth sits too low on the face, the eyes too high, or a combination.. but it makes for a very long cheek - Also, when the distance between the bottom of the nose and the upper lip is too wide or too small.

Not sure if this counts but it annoys me to no end to see a doll photographed in such a way as to produce a shiny upper lip..

      • x 1
    4. A three part torso. I can't stand them. I don't know why but they are just not appealing to me. They used to when I first started this hobby. But now...
The only way I would consider it is if I see a discontinued doll on the marketplace that i must have. Other than that I avoid them.

    5. Overly white skin and it scares me when the doll is smiling and you can see teeth like I'm terrified of this and have to close the page quickly if I come across it.

    6. Well it depends from doll to doll but I generally can't help but being freaked out with 1/3 girls with just to small noses (like almost noseles) as a girl with quite a nose, I actually like (grown up) dolls with some more nose to.
Further more certain joints just freak me out, like the cut off look you see allot.

    7. For me, the more realistic the better. I really (now) can't stand dolls that aren't realistic. Like the anime-eye ones? *shutters*

    8. Oh don't get me started! The first things I look at are the eyes. I usually like larger, very open eyes, so when I see a doll that's very beautiful but has a dreaming expression or just smaller eyes, I can't even think about getting it, haha!

Then there's a doll's profile. The doll can look perfect, but if I see the profile of the head and the lower lip is pushed too far back or if the nose is very pointy, I immediately lose interest.

    9. Agreed, I love abime but and most bjd's are already pretty animish but this fake looking anime eyes just break down the doll. I think bjds in there natural way are a wonderfull cross between anime and real life without pressing to much on anime. (So I do like big eye sockets >.<)

    10. Teeth.
      Really ripped/muscley male sculpts.
Knock kneed dolls, a lot of Iplehouse dolls have this, their sculpts are so gorgeous but this turns me off everytime.

    11. With Iplehouse legs, it actually helps to get the Mobility Joint option. That lets you rotate the knees farther out, in addition to allowing the doll to bend more.

      • x 1
    12. Big boobs, and dolls that have alien bodies (All warped) and also Facial hair for most :sweatI like the princely and princess type dolls, all handsome/ pretty and sparkling (Not sparkling but so pretty they look sparkly)

    13. - Big boobs on female dolls that look to be 14 or younger.
      - White skin (Unless it's a vampire of ghost character)
      - Huge heads with tiny bodies
      - Ill proportions. Head too small, waist too wide, legs too think.
      - Expressions.... (smiling, frowning (depends), Dikadoll Paul is a good example)
      - Tightly strung that you can barely pose the doll.

I have more, but this is good for now.

    14. I have quite a few myself, but one I didn't see mentioned is dolls with really deep nostrils and mouths or ears. I do face-ups for my own dolls and I find these to be really annoying to clean or paint/blush properly.

    15. Pin head dolls that remind me of the shrunken headed guy in the movie Beetlejuice, almost as much as alien heads with bulbous foreheads And I 2nd whoever said about misplaced ears and/or other body parts. Even a tall super lanky doll still should have arms in proportion to the body and overall height of the doll, or oversized feet just so the shoes that fit the next size up doll will also bit the next size down down (one of these doll will have either feet that look too big or too small). Even real humans that are tall "tend" to have larger feet, where shorter humans tend to have smaller feet. Proportion. If not in proportion no matter how pretty, anime, or whatever, they still look weird to me.

    16. Dis-proportionate dolls.
I get being artistic, it's just not my thing. I don't like the pear-shaped dolls, any of the Doll-Chateau dolls, any doll with sticks for arms and legs, boobs either too big or too small, etc.
I just like my dolls being proportionate.

Bored faces. I see it alot in the HUGE sized dolls, and in some other dolls... they look like they're bored to death. It just takes away from their personality... as if they have no personality. It just bugs the poop out of me :x

    17. I second the bored faces ChibiBel, I also dislike how so many child dolls have the pouty faces, they look like insipid little bastards in my eyes.

    18. Female Dolls with enormous hands (*cough* DiM)

    19. Teeth. I think it's the uncanny valley there. It shows a bit too much realism maybe? They creep me out.

Single jointed bodies. I love and need double even if I don't make as much use of them as I could.

No torso joints. I prefer two joints. I can work with one. But if you have no torso joints, I'm not buying.

Small boobs. I'm a girl blessed with naturally big ones. I like my girl dolls to have big boobs too. If the only chest options are flat and degrees of tiny, I'll look elsewhere.

Art style. I dislike the artistically sculpted bodies and faces that are warped reality. Wide fish mouthed dolls, eyes too far apart or too wide, the nose and mouth area in silhouette sticks out like a muzzle on a dog, the tiny torso huge hipped dolls, doll chateau.

Those are all my deal breakers so far.

    20. Double-jointed knees and elbows. Honestly - to me, most of them look ugly and I can't stand to have ugly joints when the rest of the doll is beautiful. I don't care much about mobility but I do care about looks.

    21. Sometimes the company's photos and the faceup. Thankfully I'm able to see owners photos and just remove the face up.

    22. I don't like it when the level of maturity in the face and the body don't seem to match and you can't buy one without the other.

      • x 1
    23. This is actually really random compared to a lot of other people on this thread but noses. Tiny little pinched bridges over long, thin noses that look like they'll snap off in a stiff breeze. Give me a strong, equilline nose if it's going to be pointy, or a rounded, wide nose if it's going to be flat.

Also, I would like dolls that translate into other ethnicities. I'm trying to shell a character at the moment of African (father) and Indian (mother) heritage, and I can't find any tan dolls that look anything more than a European or Asian heritage character with a suntan. I've been turned off so many sculpts because the don't look the heritage I want them to.

    24. Really big boobs and dolls with teeth.
I can't really put my finger on why but if they have teeth it weirds me out.
Oh yes and open mouths. It's kind of cute for some dolls like Pukifee Pong Pong but I still wouldn't want one.
With more mature looking dolls though it creeps me out.

    25. Philtrums that are too long
      Bobbleheads
      Fuller lower lips
      Large gaping mouths
      Large boobies
      Ripped bodies but skinny arms

    26. It's all about the mouth for me, I think. I don't like it when the lips are too big (on males at least) or if the face-up makes them too dark.
I'm not a big fan of the vampire trend either.

    27. Oh, I have so very many "single turn-offs". (And yet I have a whole bunch of dolls! So it's manageable ;D...)

Profiles. If the profile isn't beautiful, I won't even consider the doll, though it looks fine in frontal view.

Noses. I like a well-defined nose, and whereas I like different shapes, there are some shapes I hate with a passion and which can ruin a sculpt for me.

Hands and feet. I won't consider a body if I don't like its hands and feet.

Magnetic boy bits. DON'T WANT. Because they fall off, which is utterly embarrassing for the boy in question.

Really large boobies. Medium size is already quite large; Large and Glamour busts are total no-nos for me.

There are probably even more things I'm just not thinking of right now...

    28. I don't like it when a doll is not consistent in it's sculpt. Like when it has a sweet teenage boy's face, and a totally ripped body with big hands full of veins! Or when it has a very muscular torso, but arms that look like twigs. Or a really sweet, young girls head on a very sexy, adult body. I like it when it's obvious the sculptor had a very strong vision and idea for their doll, and worked out every little detail according to that concept. Oh, and I don't like how most SD boy bodies are so muscular! Only one of my boys has a character for who it makes sense that he is muscular, the rest of them are supposed to be slender and not have sixpacks. Besides, I líke slender boy bodies : )

    29. I'm really new to dolls, but I've been neurotically reading and researching and deciding on future dolls lately and have come to some conclusions.

I really don't like ridiculously muscled dolls that look top heavy. I'm not really into extreme muscles anyway. I do like some of the more masculine dolls that have muscle definition and are still slim. But I've seen some with huge shoulders that I just don't like.

I'm kind of picky about mature bodies as a general rule. But I definitely have a preference to more childish dolls, so I also dislike mature bodies and childish heads.

    30. My biggest one is bobble heads. Heads being way too big to possibly be believable, especially on some tinies.

    31. I've got quite a few turn-offs, but the main ones are really big eyes, really big lips, and stylized sculpts whose faces look like they've been squished, sometimes perched on realistic-looking bodies. Too much of a visual dissonance for me.

    32. Ankle joints. I will seriously not consider a doll AT ALL if I don't like the ankles. Everything else can be perfect, but if those ankles are flared out to accommodate a joint then nope.

      I'm so weird.

    33. It's got to be huge boobs for me. They weird me out o____O

    34. I can't stand male dolls with enormous hands. When everything else is perfectly proportioned but the hands are like monkeys XD I guess being out of proportion is my turn off. Except for eyes, I :aheartbea big eyes :)

    35. I need to add to this list...

Blocky, ugly and\or unstable double-joints. I would rather have a single joint than an ugly or unstable double-joint.
      If the doll can't stand because of the double-joints, they're a deal-breaker.

Mouths. I have a thing about mouths. I don't mind a thin mouth, but an odd shape really bugs me. There is a particular doll (I will not name) that has the worst mouth...I hate it. It's the biggest turn-off I can think of. I'm not sure what I want in a mouth, because I really do like a variety, but I know what I don't like, and it's one of the first things I look at on a doll.

Also, profile. This is another thing I don't really know what I like but I know what I don't like. That was one of the things on my first doll I really cared about...and honestly, his profile is one of my favorites ever. I've noticed several companies that don't really show this angle (the same company that makes what is IMO the worst mouth on a doll, rarely shoes every angle of their sculpts, especially profiles. Needless to say I don't own any of their dolls...).

    36. There's several things that bug me:
Noses - if they look just tacked on there or they are an odd shape.
Ears - if they have almost zero detail.
Boobs - again, they can't look tacked on there, like someone just cut a sphere in half and stuck them there.
Lips - huge lips or duck lips are a no-go for me.
Eyes - they can't be too close or too far apart.
Veiny bodies - If I had one, I'd probably sand the veins down.
Rectangle torsos - the ones with no hip, waist, or chest definition on their sides.

    37. I have to agree about the boob thing, they become a pain in the butt to find shirts that fit. But for me a big turn off is those uber manly hands, they just bug me I have no idea why... I also dont like the super narrow noses or super tiny mouths, I like proportion and balance I guess.

    38. Boobs don't worry me so much, yeah you'd have trouble finding clothes for them, but I don't mind or care for them.

For me, it's feet. I like the feet to match the doll in proportions, so if it's a larger doll, I'm expecting bigger feet! Smaller, smaller feet, and so on.

    39. I ended up selling a doll because her eyes were too far apart. I didn't really notice it at first, then someone pointed it out and it was all I could see.

I'm also not a fan of really narrow noses.

    40. Giant, fake boobs are definitely a turn-off for me, too. They look so pervy. Other than that, not a huge fan of super skinny legs. They make me worry the doll is going to tip over any minute! They also look vaguely anorexic.

    41. Nostrils that are just like two holes without any shaping...
      Large neck...
      No small chest option...

    42. I am turned off by yosd's in general they are just too childlike for me. My biggest turn off is msd boys who look just way too feminine, sd boys look more masculine so I wish more msd's were like that.

      But smaller...

    43. Flat profiles. I've sold a doll that I otherwise liked (but didn't really love), mostly because it's profile was just too flat and I couldn't stand it! I'm a little picky about eyes being too far apart, but I can deal with that if the rest of the sculpt is nice.

The other thing I really don't like, and I realize this is a stylistic preference, is lack of detail. I ended up selling my Volks MSD, because there was no definition around the nose, no edge to the lips, no tear ducts... even my Resinsouls have tear ducts! I was really disappointed in how generic and non-detailed his face was, and he just didn't fit in with the rest of my crew, cute as he ended up being. He was a fun challenge to paint because I had to add those details in myself, though. Also his chubby baby hands made me angry.

    44. - Overly large breasts.

      - Massive lips.

      - Warped faces/bodies. (You know, faces that look alien or like they're melting, bodies with unnaturally short or long spider-like arms...)

      - Dolls that are so scrawny, you can play the washboard on their rib cage.

      - Really awkward profiles. (Forehead curves too far inward; nose too far outward. Massive cheeks also tend to be breeding grounds for awkward side views.)

      - Knock knees or just any knees that bend unnaturally inward.

      - Anime eyes.

      - Perpetually miserable or angry facial expressions. Also, perpetually bored and duck-facing expressions. Yeesh!

      - Pristinely sculpted genitals. I know they're supposed to be artist dolls and not Barbies, but I just don't like it in general, so I intend to neuter any male dolls I get with this. (MY BOYS SHALL ALL BE EUNICHS! MWAHAHAHA!)

There are probably more, but that's a good start, I think.

    45. Non-jointed torsos get me every time. There have been dolls that were otherwise perfect, but if their torso is all one piece I will not buy them. I've never been able to find a single piece torso that poses to my liking, and I think that's my biggest turn off. Other things are little: like barely-there-belly buttons, or, on males, poorly sculpted penises, but both of those are fixable with only a little bit of modding... I would have the guts to cut a doll in half!

    46. I'm turned off by huge boobs, those ones that looks unrealistic as if they had done plastic surgery, but also MSD dolls with too childish bodies. I want my MSDs to look like they're 15, 16 years old, but some companies have bodies looking like they were 12. And last but not least if the nose is too...straight. You know, as if the doll - again - has done plastic surgery. The most companies sell their dolls with these noses and it kind of annoys me because I think it looks so fake. I want my dolls to look quite realistic, and those noses screw that up.

    47. Unrealistic standards of beauty. I know that doesn't count for much since these are dolls, but I'm always irked by huge breasts and duckfaces. I mean come on. Humans don't have lips that plump without at least $1K worth of botox (if you want a really crap job) OR they're Angelina Jolie*. And don't get me started on teenage bodies with F-cup breasts. That isn't to say that that's not a thing- coming from an all-girls high school, there were a very small handful of well-endowed girls. But in a school of 1700+ they were few and far between.

*That said, I'd really like an Angeline Jolie sculpt. That would be fantastic.

    48. I want dolls whose expression is one I can live with -- neutral to pleasant. I want nothing that is either manically smiling nor sour and angry.
Then there are the unnatural boobs, the kind that don't happen without serious surgery.

    49. Large breasted dolls. 90% of the time, it looks absolutely fake.

Surprisingly enough, teeth don't really bother me that much, since most sculpts I like seem to do it well. Fangs, and especially tongues, though, are huge turn-offs. (Sorry, Infernale)

      Giant heads on pencil-thin necks.

    50. -If the head proportion is way off what it should be to fit the body.

-Male bodies that are super ripped and covered in bulging veins.

      -Extremely pear-shaped female bodies.

-Heads where the eyes are somehow sculpted wonkily, so the face always looks a bit 'off'.

    51. I want to add penises that are obviously circumcised to my list, I have avoided buying a male doll because that reason, I like dolls with detailed genitalia actually, but circumcision freak me out and I don't want my dolls to display it.

    52. There are a few things that are a turn off for me when I'm choosing a doll especially since I have just ordered my first one

      - Size, I dislike tiny dolls they just creep me out MSD would probably be the smallest I go
      - Asleep/Semi closed eyes dolls
      - Bulging veins some veins look nice but I hate over excessive ones
      - Open mouths with or without teeth I don't mind fangs that show on the lips as long as the mouth is closed and I don't mind slightly parted lips
      -
miserable angry facial expressions, perpetually bored and duck-facing expressions. I like a more calm neutral expression with a hint of a smile :)

    53. Sculpt-wise:
Environmental resin. Sorry, I just can't stand how it feels.

      Doll-wise:
Eyebrows. I'm a huge stickler for eyebrows. Been known to cut a wig to make it have 'bangs' to cover up mediocre eyebrows on an otherwise beautiful face-up. Peculiar, I know.

    54. Turn Off's

      - Huge lips.
      -Dolfie Dream style eyes.
-Eyes too far apart or too close together.
      -"Blank stare" dolls - emotionless.
-Overly emotional faces, huge smiles or noticeable frowns.
      -Too realistic Dolls.
-Sculpts that don't look "detailed" Long flat boring faces.
      -Flat profiles
      -Sausage fingers on girl sculpts
      -Weird knee joints
      -Too pink skin
-dispraportionate head to body (head either looks too large or too small)
      -Shapeless legs (stick legs)

    55. Biggest turn off for me - too thin noses. :|
I like variation in noses, big, small, curved, upturned, button cute.... but too thin is a definite deal breaker.

    56. For me, it's...hands. Strange, yes, but I can't stand it when a doll is sculpted with so much detail, and the hands look like they came off Barbie. :/

    57. Pointy nipples, man. I know most dolls have this, but there are some dolls I won't even look at if I notice their nipples are too long or pronounced. Like, I love Dollshe Ausley, she's gorgeous, but those nipples bother me so much, gah!

    58. Heads that are too big for bodies, weirdly pushed together breasts, open mouths that show teeth, and I've come across a few dolls with extra joints in weird places that just really sort of threw me off??

Also, I agree on that nipple thing. Having them isn't a problem so much as like, if they're still obviously pointy even through a couple layers of clothing. It's distracting. XD

    59. White dolls without blush/makeup. ;;

    60. - fangs, large boobs, huge dolls (my maximum size for dolls is 30 cm), ugly faceups.
