That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. My biggest turn-off is when the doll's body isn't sculpted well. I've seen some dolls with lovely faces and then you see the body and it's obvious they didn't put as much effort into it, or didn't have the skill to make a nicely shaped body.

    2. I really hate when a doll has a really big smile. A frown doesn't really get to me as much but I prefer a neutral expression. Big smiles just seem like they're plotting. Or they just look plain creepy to me.

    3. LOL...I have pictures of her but not from the waist down. I need to do that.

    4. ~ Baby faces on adult bodies. It's just creepy and gross. Now, as has been stated, some people just have naturally youthful faces even as adults. Not an issue. One of my favorite boys is a DZ Yan head (young and pretty) on a 5Star MSD body (very mature), but it fits his character... and with faceup, wig, etc, he doesn't look like an overly built child.

~ Hands. When I first started in the hobby a few years ago, hands didn't bother me. Now... they're starting to. Still not nearly to the level they bother my bff, but they're getting there. Like, my very favorite boy, who I love with all my heart and soul, has the old DZ "disco finger" hands. One is practically a fist and the other is pointing... and it bugs me. Bad. So, he's getting new hands. A few of my others are getting hand-transplants soon too.

~ Boob of Death. The giant flotation devices that are out of proportion to the body, "afterthought" boobs, cupcake boobs - puffy and weird with a cherry on top, smashed-together, pron star implants, hover-boob - where they're so far apart you could drive a Buick up in there.... yeahhh, all that.

~ Feet. Lack of decent definition. Toes should have nail beds, and the foot should have contour. Not just elongated lumps with a few crudely drawn lines for "toes".

~ Oompa loompa skin. Tan and orange are not the same color. I repeat, NOT the same color!

I know I have others, but I'm braindead at the moment, so there's a few.

    5. Body wise, being waaay too thin. I hate when they have all ribs out and boney knees. I think it looks really unattractive, as I find it so on humans too.

Face wise, cartoonish or unrealistic style. I think they look really great but it's not my thing.

      • x 1
    6. Sculpts that have practically no distance between the chin and the neck, so that tipping the head up results in an anatomically implausible position. (I know I can't do it and still breathe.)

    7. I think I have a few big turn offs:

Big lips: A lot of owners really like big, full lips on dolls, but they just don't look good to me. That being said, I don't want the lips to be so thin they're hard to see, either. If the dolls lips are too big - even if the rest of the doll fits what I want perfectly, I don't add it to my wishlist.

Baby Faced mature dolls: Baby faced dolls are cute when they're MSDs... not the same as adults.

Undefined Fingers/Toes: I don't want excruciating detail on them, but I've seen some of the larger dolls have very detail-less fingers. It doesn't look right to have a doll that looks almost completely realistic in every way, except hands and feet. It's not like the hands (at least) won't be seen, either.

White-skinned dolls: The disaster that would happen should I ever buy a white-skinned doll. I can only imagine my OCD traits kicking in constantly, always thinking I see a spot or a stain. Not to mention it would look out of place among my NS dolls.

Too skinny male bodies: One character I'd like to shell in the future is going to be difficult to create, and it's because most of the boy SD bodies are very slim and model-esque. The character isn't supposed to be model-slim, but a little more muscular. But even without shelling this character, I'm turned off by male bodies with very little muscle definition.

    8. Noses that are too sharp, or a bridge that is too high or square-ish.
Lips that are thin, weirdly shaped, or one lip that is far bigger than the other.
Too skinny or lacking detail bodies.

    9. For me, it's an inaccurately proportionate sculpt. Don't get me wrong, they can be beautiful, but when a doll's nose pokes out too far or his torso is too long.... Bleh. :T

    10. I'm not a fan of tan skin dolls and I've come across a couple of dolls I otherwise like where I've been put off because there's no skin colour option and it's just tan. Ugh, I don't even know why that is, I'm just not a fan. Iplehouse realskin is probably as dark as I like to go, even then that looks natural and not orangey.

Noses bother me too, which makes no sense either since they can be sanded down and what not, but doing that freaks me out, even if I did get someone else to do it. So I tend to avoid larger noses.

I'm also not a fan of lanky torsos on guy dolls where you can see the ribs, I prefer somewhere in between that and super muscley (xD just like real life, again).

Most of mine are on males since for some reason I'm fussier about them.

    11. I dont like childish looking adult dolls. It bugs me when companies have different sized dolls, and the different size categories correlate to different age categories. What if I just like smaller adult dolls? Too bad!

    12. Dolls that look like me. A few times now I've come across a doll and gone "...why do I not like this face?" and then I realize they look like me in some way. I think it hits the uncanny valley for me in a way other dolls don't, plus I have a lot of self esteem issues lingering from an abused past. On the flip side, sometimes I wonder if I should shell myself as a doll who looks like me, to try and help myself with those issues.... and now I can't remember which sculpts look like me. Dx

Also, dolls with too-big noses or a hooked nose profile won't usually get anywhere on my want-list. If I were shelling a character who needed to look like that, though, that would change the picture entirely.

    13. I finally gave up on finding a doll with the right nose for a character, but yeah, I definitely get a little put-off by noses that are too minimal. Especially on a doll who is otherwise not overly 'anime' in style.

      • x 1
    14. I have something of a list
      Child heads on adult bodies
Big boobs paired with tiny hips
      Too big eyes
      Pointy anime noses
      Lack of poseability
      Really small mouths
Hands that are too big, too small or come in impractical gestures, like 2 closed fists that can't hold anything, it's fine if the extra hands that you buy separately are posed like that, but not the default hands.

    15. The SD two s DOll Mayi that i purchased this last december represents everything i Hated in dolls...actually XDXD i dislike SD's with wide faces and i HATE ALL DOLLS WITH FINGERS THAT ARE FUSED TOGETHER also her boobs are so big and smooshed together and her nipples are so high up its so unnatural....but i wanted an SD girl and she was the cheapest on the market and her waist and hips win me over XD she has a redonkulously skinny waist and wide wonderful hips...... but yea the fingers thing omg i hate that so much.,.....

    16. Ugh okay, I HATE really droopy, downturned eyes. But the big thing that makes it or breaks for me with a doll will always be the nose. I am VERY picky about my noses. My migidoll Ryu - WHAT A NOSE GOOD GOD I LOVE IT. Something like.... I dunno, Supia Emma, too pudgy and upturned! GAHK. Or noses that are only one smooth curved line from the forehead, seemingly with no bridge! or noses that are too 'pinched' looking..... I'm just.... really.... REALLY picky...

    17. Ah I am put off by really realistic looking dolls, any kind of muscles, or veins. I also wouldn't get a doll with a blank Barbie doll space where their gens would be. V wV

@Swivelchair, catlex ha ha ha that's funny, for me the pointier and more the nose sticks out the cuter I think it is, especially in profiles.

    18. when their default faceup is too dark
      really mature/realistic adult-looking dolls
white skin without any blushing/almost transparent white skin

although recently I've seen some people's dolls that are beautiful despite these things I have listed

      EDIT:
feet that don't point (I realize that this is the large majority of BJDs out there since having feet that point nicely usually take away stability but I dance and recently injured my ankle and can no longer point it the way I used to so this has become really apparent and frustrating lately)
shiny resin, some dolls are an exception but for the most part I really can't stand it

    19. For some reason, some of these things bother me. To some, it's their cup of tea, but it's a bit weird for me.

*Lack of sculpting detail. I'm talking webbed/wedged together fingers and toes, or a crude "slit" for female genitalia. That being said...
*EXTREME detail, like sculpted pubic hair and veins around that general vicinity :shudder
*"Block" noses. The ones that look alright from profile view, but when you look at them straight on, you notice that they're in the shape of a rectangle, with the nostrils just carved underneath. Or really minimal noses on an otherwise beautifully sculpted face.
*Really pointy chins and wide eyes. I guess really anime-like aesthetics put me off, although I find Dollfie Dreams to be absolutely pretty.
*Afterthought boobs. Like, just slap on two spheres on a male body, shave off a bit of the waist to add as nipples, and call it female.

    20. For some reason I really hate bigger dolls (MSDs or SDs) with big chunky hands. It makes them look like toddlers or something and really bugs me :p

      • x 2
    21. Extra pointy take-your-eyes-out chins and overly defined nipples that are near impossible to disguise in any outfit without sanding them off.
Under defined fingers, fused fingers, feet without enough definition and extra unrealistically long shins are a few of my other turn offs.

    22. I will concur with ugly joints! That's enough to make me sell a doll, even if the doll is clothed all the time. They might not show, but I know they're there.

How ugly? Unidoll High School ugly...

      I hated those floating kneecaps!

Meldandy, I agree with you about expressions. I don't mind a sulky doll once in a while, but I don't want anyone who's downright miserable. Too depressing!!

LOL, tirsden! I don't know of any dolls that look like me, and I've never been vain, but if I see a head sculpt that reminds me of me, I like it! And I've always liked the Volks SD and SD13 girl bodies because they remind me of the figure I used to have. I think these dolls seem kind of familiar and comfortable to me, so that must be why I like them!

Two of my DollZone girls have figures that most people here seem to dislike (torpedo breasts with prominent nipples and narrow hips), and in general I don't like those features either, but they seem to suit these characters really well! And I love their long legs and tiny waists. They look great dressed, IMO, and they're not too objectionable even nude (mainly cos their joints aren't ugly).

And I know people don't like tiny hands on males, and I don't either... but the AoD 60cm male body that lived here briefly had hands that seemed too huge for it and I had to sell him! He had tiny feet too. :-p If it had been one or the other I could have handled it, but not both!!

Ooh, I understand that! I took my SD13 Volks oldskin School to a doll show once and the overhead fluorescent lighting made him look ill!! Sickly yellow. He hates going anyway, so I just won't take him any more. He still photographs beautifully at my house.

Sorry, that's way more than one thing!!

    23. I've just ordered the Fayette - Titania with that bodystyle, and I think there's a bit of logic behind it. I'm guessing (because she hasn't been delivered yet), that the plate is there to maintain the joint profile underneath clothes. It stops the double 90 degree angle that some double joints give you, by creating a three-point profile. Of course, she could arrive, and I discover it doesn't work as I anticipate.

A few things I can't stand though, off the top of my head.

Hand sculpts with that sticky-up little finger. Have you ever tried doing that with your own hands?

Bulbous joints, with a huge visible slot, at the top of the thigh.

Buttocks that look like a single block, with a line simply cut into it, like this body style: (http://www.eluts.com/shop/step1.php?number=290)

Stuck-on type, or overly large breasts.

    24. I've already seen people say some of these already but for me:

      Big, unrealistic eyes
Big, open mouth smiles (well, closed too unless it's *meant* to look creepy)
      Young faces on mature bodies
      Young faces with adult clothes

    25. Elbow joints. I don't like it when the elbows have an unrealistic look to them. I can deal with the knees most of the time but the elbow joints kill me because you can see them through the shirts and if they look off it just wigs me out.

    26. I really, really hate the way most companies make boy's legs. They look like sticks with some muscles just stuck to them. I studied anatomy as it pertains to art... even thin thighs have a graceful curve to them. I just can't stand to see them turned into matchsticks. Thank you, Souldoll, for your meaty thighs. I wish other people would catch on.

After that comes canlkes, and fat wrists. I know there's a ball joint there, but does it have to be so gosh darned big?

    27. I know this has been said but: I dislike babyish/young/child-like faces on adult/SD dolls. I also dislike unproportioned bodies (when the head is too big specifically) for any doll size, and big boobed girls! That one drives me crazy! :horror: I just dont know why it's neccessarry to have boobs that big on a doll. Looks...weird. No offense to anyone who likes everything I said about a doll~! :)

    28. Call me really picky but I have multiple things that really bug me. I don't like unrealistic bodies (i.e. giant boobs on female bodies and super muscular six packs on male bodies), wide-set eyes, noses and lips that are overly thin, and limbs that are basically cylinders with no contours. I know it doesn't really matter all that much when you put clothes on a doll, but they all factor in for me when I choose what to buy. :/

    29. I dont like thicker bodied dolls.

    30. Skinny dolls, with ribs carved, if the doll is not muscle-y.
I don't really like Spiritdoll SD13 girl and boy mold. Too skinny!

But the case is different for their Herculean body though hehe

    31. I can't stand insanely disproportionate faces! Like when the eyes are too far apart or the ears too large (not counting animal ears, love those), or too flat of noses, stuff like that. Doesn't matter how beautiful or artistic the doll may be, when I see those horribly disproportional faces, I just get grossed out.

    32. Ahh I wasn't going to comment on this but after reading through everyone else's comments I have to, haha.
      Also I have a list :I

-Wide lipped dolls. I dunno what it is about them but I just can't stand dolls that have really wide lips. They just make the doll look creepy to me.
-Awkward joints (like the ones above, floating kneecaps, bulky joints). I mean I get that they're dolls, but really that just looks creepy.
-Sleeping dolls. I think many sleeping molds are beautiful but I just can't get myself to buy one...
-Big headed dolls. I personally like more realistic sculpts so the bigger heads kind of weird me out.
-Tiny butts. I like big butts, no shame. :I
-Really skinny bodies. I like bodies that have a little bit of meat on them, the overly skinny bodies aren't bad, they just don't really fit what I like.

    33. -The flat flipper-feet on Iplehouse dolls really gross me out, as much as I like the rest of them I just can't get past those revolting feet.
-I love the old Souldoll double boy body... but those knees are just, yikes! (http://souldoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=983) Major deal breaker. That goes for any doll that has double joints that look like that. The floating kneecap and elbow I can handle (I have a Granado body) but when it wraps around to the sides it just looks weird.

    34. Huh, that's odd.
I really like the dolls with big breasts.

    35. I think my biggest turn off is mobility. I could fall head over heels for a doll but if I find out it is single jointed, I'm over it.

    36. Weird, anatomically incorrect bodies. No, not like that...I mean bodies that are just totally unrealistic. Not necessarily "stylized" unrealistic...but I keep thinking about some of the weird, gravity defying boobs I've seen. Not the kind that are sculpted to look corseted...those don't bother me. I'm thinking especially of the V1 1/3 girl body that Fantasydoll made - the breasts weren't particularly big, but they were kind of...wandering off in different directions. And the arms looked like toothpicks, too, so that didn't help. The rest of the body looked fine, though...

      • x 1
    37. Torso joints that do NOTHING. I'm looking at you, Fairyland and Volks. Why have a joint/break if it can't even move?! Drives me to insanity and back...
And, dolls that can't sit without actual modding. I should not have to sand parts off so my doll can sit, I'm sorry, I just shouldn't.

This pet peeve goes all the way back to my first doll ever: belly buttons. I hate it when it looks like they just stuck a toothpick in there and called it done. The worst part is, all the other dolls made by that company have great belly buttons, but the SD boys have a toothpick hole. :P

      • x 2
    38. I think the biggest turn-off I've experienced is greenish white skin dolls. I love many dolls which are in this skintone, but it is just not for me. I can't seem to get over it within my own collection. @.@

I shy from heads which are far too big for their bodies too. Many dolls have a cartoonish proportion which is fine, but some heads are just way overly huge for their bodies. XD; If I wanted disproportional heads, I'd collect Blythes or Pullips. Lol~

Bodies with rippling collarbones and neck muscles. XD They look so tense and painful. D:

Most double jointed knees and useless joints (they don't do what they were made to do).

I think might have a dislike for sexualized baby-faced dolls too. I know there are collectors out there with Adult minis and even Yos... I'm not talking about a mini with boobs, I'm talking about a very sexual presentation/sculptural quality of these dolls. I think my adversity just finds them a bit disturbing.

    39. Bobobie dolls themselves are just a turn off for me. The resin looks and feels... eh cheap? Maybe cheap isn't the right word, but in comparison to other company's sculpts, there is a definite difference. The resin almost looks like plastic.

    40. I'm not really a fan of unrealistic proportions, but it really just depends on the doll for me!

    41. Buggy eyes, or eyes that look wayyy too big to fit proportionally on a face.
Also, short legs, and skinny arms on a muscular body is a turn off too. :/

    42. -Small hands with fat fingers
-Large noses that take up most of the face

    43. Pale resin dolls. Bought one and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. He looked flat and featureless.

    44. Big noses. This is my greatest problem with Bobobie--not the loose stringing, but the ginormous conks.

    45. Short stumpy limbs.

    46. My biggest turn off is really big breasts on dolls. Especially the ones on Iplehouse EID and SID. I'm sorry if this is hurtful to anyone, but to me they look disgusting. Really thin upper bodies in combination with "silicone breasts" turns me off the most! It just looks so fake.

Round faces with chubby cheeks i also dislike, even though I got a doll that looks like that, so guess there are exceptions!

    47. Too much space between nose and mouth

Noses that don't fit with sculpts (in my opinion)

    48. this is probably gonna annoy some people but... i really hate tinies. i just cant stand them. they all have weird expressions like that one ive seen a lot of with the huge open-mouthed smile. theyre way too small to dress to and that bugs me coz i love making outfits. i also dislike extremely realistic models. oh and most fur wigs ive seen around. i have yet to see one that doesnt just look like a puff ball on top of the head

      • x 1
    49. Round facial features. I like my doll's faces to be sharp and striking. I have a huge thing for pointy chins and facial contour, I'm not really sure why. It applies to the human world too.

I don't really like the idea of me owning a 60cm doll, but that's more because if I'm going to go big I want to go to the extreme side of the spectrum (70cms). Otherwise I'm content with my MSDs.

    50. I can think of a few.. HUGE BREASTS.. I have large breasts, they aren't fun. My back hurts because of them. There's a point where it's just TOO BIG.
There's a doll out there.. dunno the model.. but the tongue sticks out and licks the top lip... I.. no.
Chubby child hands on mature faced/bodied dolls.

    51. -Unnatural breasts. They aren't an oval cut in half and lopped on your chest. Honestly, I love the Doll Chateau body for that. When the body is that thin, that's what the breasts look like, a lot of the time.

-Huge eyes. I'm not talking big eyes, but those things that make the doll look like a Sugar Glider.

-Unnatural expressions. They can be really cute for pictures, but I feel bad the doll is holding a huge pout or winking all the time. Must get tiring.

-Snappy arms. Two of my tinies have snappy arms and legs and they drive me up the wall. They're either flared out or snapped in an L.

Ah, I know I could go on and on.

On the subject of child faces with 6 packs: My little brother and I did gymnastics when we were little, like, 5 and 7 years old little, and obviously we had little kid bodies but both of us had 6 packs. My older brother thought it looked ridiculous, but it's not as strange as you'd think.
That being said, the mini fee body is a bit intense.

    52. Certain male legs. *cough* Granado *cough* There lower legs look so thick and disproportionate. The rest of the sculpt is great...
And as much as I love jointed hands they just seem odd looking to me.

      • x 1
    53. I can't put my finger on why I'm turned off of most of the sculpts that I don't like. I probably scroll past too fast to really think about it. Except for a couple deal breakers.

I've learned looking through many pictures of different dolls that I really prefer light or white resin colors. I usually skip right over tan dolls when browsing dolls in the online shops.
Also, I've seen a few dolls with eyes that are too far apart. Some really attractive sculpts too, except I couldn't get past those dang eyes.

Aside from that, it's a mixed bag that I can't figure out. Makes it hard to narrow down the ones I DO like & what types I should look for actually. I just "know" when I like one.

Oh, and a huge chest isn't my cuppa tea... I would much prefer a doll with small breasts over one with very big ones.
Most dolls are right in the middle though, and that's okay.
      That's about it!

    54. Dolls that have a big smile and show their teeth.
Its not only a turn off, I just cant look at them and sometimes even think they're reeeally scary >_>
      New Supia Head for example...

    55. For some reason, I actually like the long legs xD One of my big turn offs, though, (Mind you, I'm still a newbie who's searching for info about these dolls, but I've already come to hate some aspects of dolls by looking at their pictures) One of my big turn-offs from dolls are the "squished boob-a-palooza" looking dolls. I know that dolls will be in clothes, but it just bothers me knowing that under her shirt she has these HUGE boobs that are squished together.

    56. Big noses, especially in profile view. I am a nose freak and have had cosmetic work done on mine, and I could never have a doll that didn't have that perfect ski slope nose, it would bother me to no end..

    57. I can't stand body-sculpts that are too thin. Especially female body-sculpts that are too thin. Really slender legs (with a mile of daylight between the thighs) and torsos sculpted with ribs showing just do not suite my tastes. I've seen a lot of love for Doll Chateau on forums, so I know many of you will disagree, but I just plain do not like their bodies. They look...starved to me. I don't like the aesthetic. This goes for any doll-body that's--in my eyes--too slender/thin. Doll Chateau was just the first example that came to mind for me.

    58. Overly defined ribs and muscles and/or breasts.
Generally anything which doesn't seem properly proportioned, such as massive noses or much too large eyes.
Also how the elbow and knee (and various other body joints) work, if they seem to bend the joints in a weird way so that it looks unnatural when your doll is sitting on the floor for example, or just that the joints themselves look odd.

    59. Hoo boy - like many others here, I really don't like oversized breasts; cartoony proportions are a definite turn-off. I don't like super stylized faces with severe angles - but at the same time I don't like faces on the roly-poly side of the spectrum either. Exaggerated anime-style eyes don't do it for me either (yeah, I know that just about all ABJDs have exaggerated eyes, but there's some like Dolfie Dreams and certain DC sculpts that turn me off). Super muscly male torsos are also very much not my thing. Total turn off.

Though I'm loosening up about it, I *really* prefer three-part torsos rather than two-part ones and even then there's a particular kind of three-party torso that I like. I've come across so many dolls that I'm like "Yes! YES!" but then discover that the torso is totally not what I want; that's enough to strike a doll from my list.

    60. My number one biggest pet peeve is when the eyes are to close together it Really bugs me I just can't get over that
And my number two is baby cheeks/chubby cheeks I'm not a fan of them at all but if I like the eye shape enough I might be able to get past it.
