That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. My two big ones are laughing dolls and unrealistically sized body parts (like huge boobs). I also don't like sad looking dolls, dolls with really round eyes, or sleeping dolls. I prefer my dolls to have a "fiercer" look than being generically pretty, but it's not a huge deal.

    2. Giraffe necks + when you can see the "dome" of the neck approaching even if the head is on it (I had this issue with my first doll Maya, DZ Shoyo - a pic of her with "neck-dome approaching")

Dolls with special facial expressions like extreme smile or extreme cry-face. I don't think they are ugly and some artists can turn them into beautiful dolls, but I don't want to own them beacuse of their lack of flexibility in moods. This means a character is "always cying" or "always smiling" what annoys me >.<

Big boobs and chewing gum Vamp* is already mentioned often enough ^-^

*when vampire teeth are looking like if the doll is having a chewing gum inside the open mouth

    3. For me, my biggest turn-off is bubble breasts, where they just look like two circles slapped on the doll's chest from the front.

      • x 2
    4. For me it’s large boobs too! Actualy, any too mature looking bust... I will only buy a doll if it has an almost non-existent bust... mature ones just not fit my characters or taste!

      • x 2
    5. The way a lot of tiny faces are very flat and wide, the features are very close to each other and feel very squashed together. I like them to have longer faces with space for more proportionate features.

Ugly joints for the sale of mobility, like the jointed neck on some Dollshe bodies, and how some bodies have part of the back of the knees carved out just so they can kneel.

Also anime style faces aren’t my thing, but that’s just my personal preference.

    6. the best part of pukis is that you can find tons of Kelly/Shelly/Tommy doll clothes- no need to sew that small!

      • x 2
    7. For the longest time one of my instant-rejection features was open mouths/exposed teeth. It's still a huge turn off, but there are a few exceptions. Another turn-off is excessively large/pointy noses, but at least that's an easy mod. I also won't buy closed/slit eyed dolls unless there is an open eyed version to go with it. I like the option to change between them but I just don't have a place in my dollverse for a permanently asleep doll.

      • x 2
    8. Sculpted expressions and young looking faces on beefy bodies! I also don’t like crazy beefy bodies- the Granado Titan makes my skin crawl lol

    9. For me, probably a weird lip sculpt!!! There's a certain type of lip sculpt that I HATE lol

      • x 1
    10. Giant, unrealistic and really round breasts. It just looks so weird to me!

    11. Turn offs would be dolls with too skinny bodies cuz they can't carry my fave style of clothing well, dolls with large features but small faces and heads too small on big bodies (I see a lot of SD17 dolls like this)

    12. I’m not a fan of the open mouthed sculpts or the ones with their tongues out. I just....I can’t get past it. The vampire fangs resting unnaturally on the lips is a no go for me as well. The over exaggerated pear shape of some dolls. And eyebrows.....I don’t know how to properly explain it, certain styles of eyebrows are just a massive turn off. This one, thankfully, can be amended with a new faceup.

    13. Very Childish faces in adult bodies , especially if the faceup is a little bland.

      • x 1
    14. I don't like duck lips and dolls with this certain dull Selfie-Girlie-Expression. Also too symmetric faces, they look so lifeless to me.

    15. Adult hands that are pudgy or not very detailed. Same with feet too. It seems kind of a shame to have such detailed faces and bodies, and then have the hands be so...blah.

    16. I have a lot of turn offs... for me would be the following
      - incredibly stick skinny body
      - child head with adult body
      - plain bodies/bodies lacking detail (looks cheap)
      - ant head on body
      - long or thick necks
      - odd shaped lips
      - white skin
      - nose that curves like a water slide/pointy nose
      - doll any bigger than 60cm (I love seeing them, but won't ever own them)

    17. Unrealistic hands-- and/or, hands without sculpted detail -- stiff, straight pointy fingers like the artist couldn't be bothered or was inept -- oh! and hands that are cut off mid-handpalm for a joint! Dreadful. To me the hands need to be just as expressive as the doll's face. Also because like the face, it will be the part of the doll that's visible always, and will be important in photos,

      • x 2
    18. Unproportionally large breasts, also grey resin; I've worked with sculpting materials that are grey, so grey dolls just make my brain think 'unfinished sculpture'

    19. I found I am not a big fan of teeth something about a doll with teeth just puts me off . And also dolls with too much expression I feel like I can’t just have them sitting around when they have a certain expression like they gotta be doing something idk tho lol

    20. For me, a turn off is a sad-looking doll, one with a down-turned mouth. Another is when the eyes are down-turned at the outer corners. I love sculpts that have almond-shaped or skinnier/Asian looking eyes.

Another turn off is when the hands are too long or big relative to the rest of the arm/body. I've seen ones with hands as big as their faces! That's way too big for me, especially if its all fingers.

    21. Don't care for busty girls. I prefer a neutral face and not fond of what I call the double jointed dolls (square knees and elbows).

    22. Regardless of how you're choosing to use it, "double jointed" is a proper term for a type of jointing using a separate "peanut" between the two limb pieces, rather than a cup on one and ball on the other (single jointed). It is not aesthetics based, and there is a wide variety of aesthetics in both single and double jointed dolls.

    23. I don't really have any doll turn-offs. The only thing I can say for sure that turns me off is BRIGHT ORANGE faceups. I will not pay a company to do a faceup if I see their sculpts have orange mouths. One time I liked the promo shots for an IpleHouse doll and bought him, and he came with orange lips and orange blush on his cheeks. PUMPKIN ORANGE. lol! It made me hate my doll until I got him wiped and got someone on DoA to give him a nice faceup.

    24. Oh man I don’t like puffy faces, full smiles with teeth showing, overly wide/close set eyes, or grey resin. There are expections to every rule but I know I’ll never buy a doll with those qualities.

Oh. And half closed eyes. I forgot all about that lol

    25. Really pointed chins/tear-drop faces. IMO they look very weird from certain angles for photos.

    26. I don’t like open mouthed dolls, or dolls with teeth (not including fangs) and dolls with really squished profiles. I just can’t bring myself to like it. Also the way too pronounced breasts.

      • x 1
    27. I also don't like open mouthed dolls that shows teeth!!! I don't know why but that just makes me cringe a little inside.

      • x 1
    28. I hate muscular sculps. Thin and chubby are fine, even the thin dolls with a 6 pack, but big bulky ones are a no go for me.

I also don't like dolls where the face is frozen into a weird expression. Normally I don't lik a doll with anything but a neautral face (with some exceptions) but it's ones with a very weird expressions that will always be a 100% no, like IOS Infernale or some of those yawning heads.

    29. Joints that are aesthetically clearly meant to not be moved and have an edge to sit straight. Like for exemple iplehouse's torso joint. Looks bloody awful when your doll is leaning!
also this new trend to have built-in siliconne discs or beads. If your doll requires them to hold a pose, that's bad design. I also really don't like how they feel when moving the joints, and I don't look forward to when they'll have dried up and I'll have to fill up all those holes with hot glue. Just no.
And joint locks. They also don't feel great when handling the doll, and are strangely limiting for something that is intended to help with posing.

I have a lot of feelings about doll engineering :XD:

    30. As others have said, I don’t like dolls with overly happy/sad faces. I don’t mind them, it’s just that I wouldn’t buy one for myself.

    31. Dolly elbows XD I just think they're so ugly, but I can live with it.

      The really chubby "baby hands" on dolls with big boobs. They just creep my out. >.>;

    32. oversized fakey breasts on dolls are a big turnoff. actually i dont like most sculpts' breast shape so i dont know that ill ever get a girl with any bust lol....

dolls with super baby-baby faces. the more it looks like an irl baby, the more i detest it. i just really dont like how babies look.

and lastly, teeth .... they creep me out, especially if theyre super distinct. open smiles i dont like for this reason either. ill lump ahegao type expressions into here too; even seeing clothing modeled on a doll with one of those faces turns me off to the product...

    33. * Like a whole lotta people here, I think zeppelin-sized boobs are pretty awful on a lot of otherwise lovely doll sculpts. It doesn't bother me on statues, maquettes, or action figures (usually), but it can be off-putting on a doll.
      * Ski-slope noses. It's surprisingly common, and I don't get the appeal.
      * Eyes spaced waaaaay too far apart. It's really cute on some anthropomorphic dolls, but it's just disturbing on pseudo-realistic human faces.

      • x 3
    34. * Too short arms
      * Ugly ankles
      * Anime sculpts (I like realistic)
      * Badly sculpted torsos (abs looking like squares, flat back...)
      * Too small, flat or otherwise ugly butts
      * Small, chubby hands on adult bodys or too small hands in general
      * Too big heads, bobbleheads

      • x 2
    35. Giant headlights and the appearance/flexibility of the knees.

I think it's extremely tacky when I see these dolls with very thin and frail bodies, but somehow have these MASSIVE things strapped to the front. For the knees; I want my doll to be as poseable as possible, so when the doll has knees like a barbie (can only bend it one way) and not the extra joint for the kneecap its a real turn off.

I'm also picky with the head sculpts. I am into the realistic dolls but they have to have a regal air for me to consider them. The cutesy one's are adorable, I just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a doll that I can't make beautiful. That's not to say I don't like them though. :)

    36. Open mouthed dolls - in general I don’t want to own one. They don’t bother me but thinking of cleaning out that mouth as often as I enjoy redoing face-ups makes me unwilling to own one.

Large eyes / odd jaw lines / lack of definition in the nose or especially ears - I’m really picky about faces and tend to lean more loosely US-comic than anime in what I look for. And ears make or break a sale for me. A flat disc isn’t going to cut it, I want details. Also if a company covers the ears in every shot I’m less likely to purchase. I do give the larger eyes a pass on my tinies.

Heavy face ups that don’t reflect elsewhere on the doll - this one is probably just me, but for example I always feel dissappointed when I see a doll with heavy freckling or the like and it ends at the face. Nothing on the arms, hands, or elsewhere to reflect the entire face being heavily customized.

    37. One big turn off for me is when the eyes are too big. I love anime sculpts, but when a company puts out a sculpt that isn't supposed to be anime, and the eyes literally engulf the face of the doll, it's a turn off. I also don't like it when a doll's body (specifically male) is too skinny and lanky, but he has a six pack in the middle of his stomach. Like, a really defined six pack. His arms are still skinny, but he has a six pack. My only doll, Elliot, is really pushing those boundaries, but I've seen worse. Another thing is dolls that have yaoi hands. If I can't fit a sweatshirt overall doll without having to remove their hands, it seems kinda irritating.

      • x 3
    38. I hope I can explain well but....I really don't like it when male bodies have the torso jointed right underneath the pecs. It makes the pecs looks weird and too pronounced in my opinion? I like when the joint is a little lower, like where the ribs would be, leaving room underneath the bottom of the pecs.

      • x 1
    39. I strongly dislike the curled full upper lip a lot of these male dolls have that I would otherwise like. It’s too reminiscent of the creepy scientist from A Nightmare before Christmas. Every time I see these beautiful boys with these ridiculously full waved curled lip I think of the scientist being agitated at Sally’s escape and his lip quivering. :ablah:

I also dislike a lot of the male bodies. They’re either string bean thin or obviously on roids. Where’s just your average dude bod. Hah, maybe people don’t want that?

For girls I’d say a lot of the faces are too “precious” or animated for me. Even the ones that attempt realism don’t mesh with my realistic male doll faces.

      • x 2
    40. I've realized there's a few things I don't like now and its made it really hard to find companies that make dolls that I like.

*I don't like dolls that aren't tan because I'm tan myself and I like to have a doll that looks similar to me that I can relate to.

*I don't like realistic faces, I prefer huge eyes.

*I don't like dolls that have a mouth that's sculpted to always smile because I like to make my dolls have a neutral or frowning mouth. (I like to give my dolls a worried expression because I think it looks really cute.)

*I don't like open mouths or teeth unless they're fangs.

*I don't like really skinny dolls, I prefer dolls that have thicker thighs, torso, chest, etc. (Exception to this is if the doll is meant to be really young.)

*I don't seem to like male dolls. I think because of my first point.

      • x 1
    41. There are three things in particular I can't stand:

1.) Dolls that have disproportionately wide hips, especially when the rest of the body is disproportionately narrow. For one thing, buying/making clothes to suit such a shape is next to impossible.

2.) Dolls with a young child's face on a mature adult body. I feel like there are pedophilic undertones to such a design, and am disturbed by that.

3.) I'm glad I'm not the only one who is sick of seeing the oversized, unnaturally shaped flotation devices a lot of dolls have that are apparently supposed to be breasts. I mean, I understand that a lot of dolls are made with the anime look in mind, and I also understand that anime isn't realism, but come onnnn.

      • x 5
    42. I really dislike dolls with a winking or really exaggerated facial expression... I guess it's kind of like uncanny valley but most of the dolls I've seen with those kinds of expressions *cough cough* fairyland *cough cough* are really ugly to me T_T

      • x 1
    43. I don't really like the enormous breasts either. I'll see a pretty female sculpt, and then be turned off entirely when I look at her body and the gigantic, balloon shaped breasts.

I also don't like how a lot of the male bodies have super exaggerated muscles on their torso. Studying the human body, you realize that the only way a dude can ever get that sort of super ripped muscles on their torso is if they're flexing said torso 24/7.

And gigantic yaoi hands. Dear god, those hands are a sin. I do not like those enormous baseball mits. Please. It's the main reason why I'm shopping around for a body just for my IOS Anarmonia. IOS tends to have those baseball mits. :'[

Random veins on the body as well. It's just...a huge turn off for me when I'm looking at bodies and it has weird veins on it. Why? The body would look good without them.

    44. Thin ankles and necks!! They just make the doll look like they are costantly teetering on the edge of faceplanting! Makes me very nervous so I’d have to say “no thanks”!

    45. Big breasts on anthros. Except of Dollchateau Madelyn.
Too muscly guys. It's ridiculous, sometimes. Why they don't make more smooth guys?

    46. I find that I don’t like mature dolls that have disproportionately huge heads, unless they’re stylized. I’ve also found that super skinny dolls, like the ones that look like a twig without a figure is another big turn off.

Yeah and I’m the same with the boobs. I don’t like it when the boobs make the doll topple over.

      • x 2
    47. One thing I noticed that will *allways* turn me off buying a doll (new or on the MP) is if it has one body and two heads. I really don't like having to chose, and it's sometimes very hard to find a second body, expecially if the doll is a fantasy colour.
I just don't like floating heads.

And I agree with the general sentiment about big balloon boobs. I also dislike huge hands. :-)

    48. Dolls that have open mouths or teeth showing. I have one that has a slightly open mouth, lord knows I love her, but goodness she’s my only exception and I’ll never buy another. I didn’t notice from the pictures her mouth was like that until I had already ordered her. *sigh* (but I still love her)

    49. THIS.

    50. I guess this is more of a whole type of doll, but I really dislike these kinds of very thing and all dolls that look super boney. Weirdly I see them mostly made by russian doll artist, on instagram specifically. And another thing ... really big and almost baby like faces/ squished cheeks/ luck lip like look. It's very specific but those kind of faces make me very uncomfortable for some reason.

      • x 3
    51. For me, I really don't like little cutesy "baby" sculpts. It makes me feel somewhat evil tbh, not liking "cute".

I also don't like open-mouth "submissive" dolls, for lack of a better term..? In other words, the lady sculpts that look like they were pulled straight out of hentai or look vulnerable.

      • x 1
    52. Dolls with faces that shows an expression that is too... for the lack of a better word, unusual. By which I mean, like IOS Infernale (that open mouth and tongue!) Or Ringdoll Mona (crying girl).
Although they are really interesting to look at, I think they are just not versatile enough for me, I guess, as they are not suitable for all kinds of photoshoot scenarios.
Also, I agree with many of you guys here - huge, unnatural looking boobs are always a turn-off, although I don't own any female dolls.

    53. My only turn off is when a nose is too unrealistically small

I know many people have small tiny noses, but there is still nostrils and it looks harmonious to their face and like they can breathe from it

Some dolls have a nose that looks like they used facetune to make it very tiny, even though everything else is in proportion

I accept it on Dollfie Dreams, but on realistic dolls I always think it looks like Lord Voldemort

      • x 1
    54. Extremely skinny or weirdly proportioned dolls. Also childlike/ "baby" dolls. (Think pukifees etc.)

    55. Iplehouse's dolls are too realistic for me, they really spook me out. I need my dolls to have large enough eyes and exaggerated features that they are clearly dolls.

Also, 1/3 or 1/2 dolls with childlike proportions are too much like actual children.

    56. hmmm for me, not that I dislike them, but I found that I like Anime sculpts less than a realistic one.

    57. Interesting tread. I don't like dolls too serious or depressed. It just make me nervous. Long second toe on the feet is a deal breaker, just like lazy sculptured hands, and feet. Single jointed elbows and knees are a big no for me. Ugly joints. When there is no thigh joints. Mobility is very important for me. I hate when I find a nice body, and the neck is veeery thick. Too ugly bust (like barbie has), or they are too small. I like big breasts, or nice middle, but I hardly find a girl body, I don't want to modify in some way... Oh I forget the legs, looks like an elephant's with wide ankle....:sigh Bubble head. Large feet for a normal SD girl. I think I am too picky...

    58. for me, it would be too muscular abs or weird hands. just generally I catch myself not liking most doll companies bodies and hands.:sweat

    59. I don't like the porn star look either and, even though I like vampire dolls with small fangs, I'd like them better if the fangs were bigger and more notticiable. Also, this isn't a total dealbreaker but, I hesitate to buy a doll that doesn't have a standard-sized body because I know I won't have as many bjd clothing options. There are a couple of non-standard-sized dolls I keep revisiting (mostly big babies) because I like the look of the bodies, but there's always a lot of standard-sized dolls that are pretty/cute too.

    60. it's been said before, but
      - Uneven eyes
      - Neck too long
      - large breasts
      - curved spine. it's weird!!! they can't sit well like that. Drives me insane on monster high dolls, too.
