Contest Surprise Cosplay Contest!

Aug 19, 2018

    1. Looking at the entries for this contest totally made my day! :D So inspiring and funny. The ideas members come up with for the contests keep surprising me every year!

    2. Seriously-- all the entrants could go to a con with those costumes and look fabulous! Just so WOW!!! --and the humorous ones were awesome! :abow:

    3. Ahhhh we’re down to the final hours before results are announced!! I’m so nervous and excited! With only 12 entries and two prizes, those are good odds for all of us!

    4. Now that the results are out I can say, mine was the last one and it was totally unfinished cause I overslept and couldnt make a halo and I was thinking about something else like maybe a mask or body details too. Still it was fun to join!

Thank you so SO much for everyone who voted for me! I have never come in first place in any of the DoA contests (and rarely rank top 10 even), so this is a huge accomplishment for me! I really appreciate everyone who made this happen, thank you to the mods for hosting events, the companies who donated prizes, the members who voted and everyone who participated. (And to my handsome human model/husband, he pulled off that angel costume way better than I could have! He deserves something special too, I think I'll make him cheeseburgers and peach cobbler tonight. :love)

Congrats to @DontShoottheDucks on second place, I really loved the creativity of making plate wings and a fork halo! The lights were a special touch, and I don't think you could have picked a better background for your photos.

And now, because I felt everyone came up with interesting ideas, especially in such a short time:

#3 - What a sweet little baby angel! I really like the stars on the halo and belt, and he looks especially angelic in that last photo with his cute little model pose.

#4 - Such a simple list of materials worked very well for the finished costume, and I like how you listed the instructions and explained how to do it. This could be very useful for future angel cosplayers and Christmas pageants!

#6 - Love the throwback idea, the 10th anniversary was my first year competing in any of the contests, and I was far too intimidated to enter the triathlon. Thanks for bringing back the memories, and I love how you basically just upsized your doll's costume into your own and included him in the photo!

#7 - Those wings!! Oh, man, those wings! The size, the color, the design--they're just so bright and impressive! I wouldn't have thought to make wings in that way, and the mask completes that ensemble.

#8 - The lighting is perfect in your photos, it really gives you the angelic glow, and it hides the wires of the halo so well, it looks like it's actually floating! The poses and the veil really give the classic angel vibe.

#9 - Super cute! You nailed the look of the popular cherubs! And I really like the black wings, they go well with your hair and tattoo.

#10 - That crown is so pretty, and I love the simple, innocent look. Sitting by the waterfall makes for a beautiful photo.

#11 - Cupid is adorable and that cosplay doesn't look at all like a last minute thing, it looks professional to me! It sounds like it was a family affair getting everyone involved, I love the support going on here.

#12 - I really like the music theme, and that's such a magnificent outfit! The setting was a good choice too, that place looks so peaceful and relaxing.

#13 - I like that you went with the fallen angel look, that makes it stand out. The sparkle of the wings is a nice contrast to the dark photo, and I feel like having her hair shield her face gives a sense of her hiding her shame of falling from grace...or maybe just playing the mysterious bad girl!

All in all, good job to everyone, I very much enjoyed looking at all of your photos, and thanks again! :aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea

    7. Congratulations are in order :D

This cosplay challenge was a very nice one to see!
I loved all the entries and it was very difficult to chose a few for voting!

    8. Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! I honestly was not expecting to win anything! Everyone was so creative. I'm pleased people enjoyed what i did! Second place is such an honor especially when @CloakedSchemer 's mailman angel was first place! That one was actually my favorite and got one of my votes haha.
      Thank you! Thank you!

    9. @InvisibleWings Thanks! It almost didn’t even happen! I am so obsessive about clutter, I didn’t think I had anything useful for this, until I started looking around and realized I did have an abundance of shipping supplies...and it just came to me, I had to do it!

      @DontShoottheDucks Thank you so much!

    10. First of all congratulations to both of you!
And cloakedschemer thank you for your kind words about my entry. (number 11)

I am the complete oposite i guess. My entire attic is my hobby room and stash place. During the year i randomly buy stuff that accumulates in my attic. ( i have ADD and stuff rarely get finished and some stuff doesn't even get used at all, but i can't throw away stuff)

So for my entry i used stuff i have (not) used for entries i have made in previous years challenges
Last years fabrics ( for the Athena entry i made in the triathlon) allthough i must admit i always have a bolt of white cotton for mock ups and for you never know........ and the trim i bought for the competition aswell but it was far to bulky to use on a doll dress.
The flowers where from a triathlon 2 years before that ( make a wig from anything but hair or other stuf you'd normally use for a wig) i bought the flowers but decided they were far to 'obvious' and made my wig with black bathroom caulk, that i piped into long ringlet curls. Hence thelefto er flowers
Two years ago i entered the fashion contest with a gown inspired on the bleeding heart bird and i had about 2 yards of the white feathers left ( and even more green )
The bow and arrows my son found on holiday while visiting a castle about 6 weeks ago, so i promissed i'd make the arrow bag for him, i had allready bought and pre prepared all the components when the contest came online, so it was pretty easy to put them together in a day. It's really sturdy and i was pretty chuffed with it when i finished it.

But the very best part was my son. He was such a great inspiration and model. He is 7 years old and a real boyish boy. I have 2 sons a i always tease them that at least one of them should have been a girl. He hates it when i do that, so asking him to do this was more or less a joke on my part. But to my great surprise he said yes! Iwasn't allowed to show these pictures anywhere else, but here (and to my mother in law, because he thought she would be the only one who would understand) He even helped me by making the heart on the tip of the arrow.

When we were preparing these pictures one of his best mates rang our door if he could play outside. So he hid and i had to rush my photoshoot. He gave me 2 minutes to finish dressing him and take the pictures and the wings weren't even on yet. Soinstead of glueingthewings on with make up glue i used double sided tape. Poor boy had really red shoulders upon removing the wings from his back. (Oops)
But in the end he was so proud of what he looked like in the pictures, that he dressed up again later that evening and yes he did shoot arrows a me and my partner and yes he made us kiss ( and then had the audacity to be 'grossed out' when we did kiss)
In the end we had so much fun and i was so proud of how he handled things and how pretty he looked for a boy. ( and as a bonus i now have photo's to blackmail him with....)

And now i have my next project waiting for me, for in return he wants me to make the monster book from Harry Potter (hurray for my stash, because i still have pelt, resin, a book with golden sides and lots of worbla, no i am not a professional but just a mommy that makes everything her kids want (now mommy now)

    11. OMG @CloakedSchemer I just saw you won.... needed a good laugh today and I'm still coffee snorting 10 minutes later!!

    12. Congrats to the winners and everyone did such a great job here, so many different ideas.

    13. @allanieew That is such a sweet story! For what it’s worth, I never thought your son looked too girly, he makes a very handsome boyish Cupid! He should be proud of how cool he looked and that he was quite the hero in helping you finish your idea! I hope he gets the most awesome monster book ever as a reward! :D

@whitewings So glad to give you a good laugh! If that made you laugh for ten minutes, I’m sure his antics while trying to take the pictures would have had you laughing for days! He’s quite the goofball.

    14. @CloakedSchemer - Congratulations! :D Your entry absolutely made my day! Let's be honest, in a hobby like this, the postal service really is a crucial part of our hobby. No doubt there are many confused posties out there who wonder just what exactly is in those huge, mysterious boxes... I love the fact your husband helped you out with these - he has a really great smile!

Thank you for your lovely compliments! The 10th anniversary was also my first year competing - I've used these contests every year as a way to earn new skills and hone old ones; this year for me it was less about trying to win, and more about trying to make something I'm really happy with and I think I've achieved that goal and had quite a bit of fun along the way. :) Haha, any time "angel" is mentioned, my immediate response is always Azrael. I couldn't leave him out of the photo (though he did decide to faceplant just before we started taking photos hence why he appears to be hugging my knees...)

@DontShoottheDucks - Congratulations! :D I absolutely loved the plate-wings and fork-halo. That just looked so cool!

    15. @Quiet and Insane thank you! I'm so glad that my wings went over well. They really took some finagling to get right and i didn't even know if they'd make it through the photos haha. They are, surprisingly, still intact. I think the fork halo is my favorite part, though

    16. Congrats to the winners and to the other participants. Your creativity with the cosplays were awesome :thumbup

    17. Thank you! My post office employee and mail carrier have become friends after all the ordering I’ve done! And they’ve both been great help in finding lost packages, getting things where they need to go and giving me shipping advice. They even get excited for me now, I’m trying to get my mail carrier into the hobby! So it just seemed like the perfect chance to sort of honor them in a way! (And husband was very helpful, and I personally think he has the charm of an angel.)

Hugging your knees is better than smashing his lovely face!! And I do think having fun is the most important part—it shows through in the entry when you’re having fun!

    18. Hehehe yes, an excellent idea! One of my regular customers at work recently expressed interest in getting a BJD after many long chats about the hobby and what it's all about. So fingers crossed both of us gain some new recruits. :evilplot: It's great if your postal people are friendly and helpful...mine are less so, which sucks.

He did end up chipping a lip...which makes me feel awful because the artist who painted him has since left the hobby, and despite doing 80% of my own face ups, I'm terrified about touching his. :...(

    19. Congratulations CloakedSchemer! You were my favorite entry and I laughed so much thinking about the postmans reaction to being asked for this photo until I read the description and it made more sense and less crazy XD Its such a good photo and made a lot of people happy, a deserved win :))))

I also really liked Quiet and Insane's interpretation they remind me of the angel statues in cemetaries, so very cool

I also really liked and voted entry 8 because it looked like a vintage polaroid photo from the 60s that was discovered in an attic

I wanted to enter but my model (coconut, my french bulldog) destroyed the wings. Normally he loves costumes and the attention but he really did not like the feathers or the baubles haha

    20. @GreenTeaSlug - Thank you! Well I do love exploring old cemeteries... ;)
      I totally agree about #8! It's fantastic.
Aww, pity your model got a little too enthusiastic. Coconut is an adorable name!

    21. Thanks!! I just had my husband pose for me, but my mail lady is awesome and I think if she had time and I asked, she probably would have said yes. XD

It’s a shame Coconut wasn’t up for modeling, that would have been so cute!! (Can we see a pic of him anyway?? <3 )

    22. The Mail Angel was literally my favorite thing out of all the contests this year, so congrats @CloakedSchemer for giving me a good laugh in the spirit of BJDs! XD

    23. Awww, thanks! I'm glad it made you smile! <3
