Soom Super Gem Discussion (Basic, Limited & Special Order) - Part 11

May 16, 2017

    1. @Yangire811 - Like petiteballerine, I have no experience of my 8-10 year old Soom's changing color significantly. I have 6 white skin, 2 normal skin and a grey and the while white skin are a creamy white that might have yellow tones they've always been that color and there is certainly no green.

    2. Tans are more likely to green as the red is usually the first collor to fade. I haven't had a problem with my tawny and bronze dolls but they have been well cared for.

    3. I have two normal skin, one bronze skin, and many cream white from varying years. As far as I can tell (admittedly Aeona was dyed brilliant blue, she could be lime green under the dye and no one would know) none of them have greened with age.

    4. The Soul Mate Cuprit that I have is still Bronze she has zero green to her.

    5. @petiteballerine my moonwish breccia was supposed be a moonwish breccia "beauty white" so I guess cream white? but she is so green now and her resin is heavy but seem brittle especially around the neck :( I'm actually quite worried that her s-hook might get lodged on her neck so I rarely take her out but I love that sculpt so much and understand that she's quite old.

@akiko0021 @derilan85 @nancy_schroeder_ca @Layn guess I just happened to have bad luck getting the MD with a bad resin batch:...(. There is one other person on the soom feedback section with the same problem as me though :aeyepop:

thank you so much everyone! :)

    6. Oh, that is unlucky. I bought Breccia vampire/sweet witch during the FCE (or whatever it's called) a couple years ago. cream white which is very soft eggshell white. The new girl looks wonderful. I love her paws!

    7. @petiteballerine yes she's the reason I'm asking if they have changed their resin I'm planning to buy her since it's been a long time since she has been released as a fox :D

    8. Soom's list says Moon Wish was cream white. Someone may have confused the color name with another companies term. Luts had beauty white which sometimes arrived new with a green cast.

I think Soom has changed their resin since Moon Wish was offered. All the companies have learned more about UV protection.

    9. @nancy_schroeder_ca could be cream white I guess and that's great news I think that's enough for me to want to buy another one ^^ thank you!

    10. my first bjd was Cerberus Project elf Lishe in 2004 in beauty white with vamp & sleeping heads. although displayed near each other, the doll turned greenish years later while the extra heads are still a soft, aged white. not even yellow.
I did the denture fizzy soak & scrubbed my girl & she regained most of her white.

      • x 1
    11. @petiteballerine oh wow what brand of denture soak did you use? I would love to try that on my girl. I already tried the baking soda oxyclean route with her body but sadly it did not work.

    12. I don't remember the brand or how much I used. overnight soaking, maybe more. but, I think the denture cleaner was the gentler method. if oxyclean didn't work, I don't know what will. A group of us were talking about resin color changes several years ago. the brilliant 'de-zombification' serum was discovered, and the denture/baking soda cure.
try searching in the workshop threads. ?

you also might try sanding the doll. get advice from someone who knows more about it than I do. test a spot on the headcap. wear a mask. very fine grit sandpaper. garnet paper I guess. see if the green goes deep or is just on the surface.

    13. Only one of my Soom dolls has gone green at all... My (originally white) Emerald King Chalco has a definite greenish cast to his resin these days, and that started within a year or two of his manufacture. He's not neon green or anything, and he's not nearly as awful as my two "Beauty Green" CP Delfs, but the color change is absolutely noticeable.

None of my other Sooms have aged badly. My old first-release, monthly doll Heliots are a nice ivory color. The NS, Grey, Bronze and Tawny members of the gang that came along later don't seem to have changed much at all.

    14. Oh man, I'm dying with envy from all the green tinged doll stories, I want to make Afra Lyon from one of Anne Mccaffrey's series. Chances of getting a boy that is slim, tall and slightly green are almost non-existant. :sorry

    15. I do like how Breccia complements Chalco - the outfits are very cute! And those eyes are back! I might have to get them...debating that even now. :sweat

    16. @petiteballerine I think simple body means no extra joint in the thigh? I know adding the thigh joint makes it an extra type when I've ordered in the past.

    17. Simple body means no extra thigh joint.

    18. I didn't even know there was a choice. Iplehouse, yes but I only had Soom males untill Breccia. I never saw a joint choice. (my B is on an older bod if I remember right)
Is it visible? now I need to search to see girl bodies. :apirate:
I guess that means the calf parts are the same. So the paws might fit.
      thanks.

    19. Breccia is so beautiful!!! But I really want her in NS. Tried asking but they said no :(....maybe if enough people request they'll reconsider?

    20. @petiteballerine I don't think the doll in the promo pics have it but when you have the doll dressed, the joints aren't visible. It allows them to do pin up poses, like bring their knees/thighs close to their chest while still keeping the elastic covered with a resin joint. I think if you search Soom's gallery, they have pictures of the extra types for both male and female 2012 bodies.

    21. I love super gem doll CHALCO vey much and I already of 2 dolls of this sculptural. He's so beautiful!!

    22. by visible, I meant a separate joint in the thigh like Iplehouse mobility. not inside the hip.
none of my male sooms have it so I assume it's females only. not offered the choice with Breccia.
......found photos of female with the extra joint.

@sarahlasia - love Chalco too! I will have two - very different styles.

    23. It is not female only. It's only in the new male bodies, the originals didn't have it. All three of my male Soom dolls have it.

    24. mind spinning. Never saw pics of new body joint.
isn't new Chalco on new bod? there was no joint choice.
good thing I have you guys to keep me informed.

    25. Hi Nancy. I have 6 of the older males but never had a choice for the extra type.
I guess all my guys were simple.

    26. @petiteballerine thank you so much! I hope it could at least lessen her green skin but if it doesn't I'll love her anyway since she is still very much my grail :3

@Brightfires good to know that it seems like it's just that particular batch of resin that came out bad. It's quite reassuring to know that dolls produced later than 2010 are still in great condition. :3

    27. I think it's so exciting Soom has released fox-Breccia on the 'new' 2012 body! I think the new body is so elegant :) And the 'extra' joint option seems like it would open up a lot of posing options. My quandry is this, Breccia is definitely a grail for me, but, I'd need NS for my particular plans - I'm wondering what the odds are that she might show up in a future Free Choice?

At any rate I can't wait to see what everyone does with their new Breccias! ;)

    28. Soom's track record with rereleasing heads they already did before in FCEs is poor. I would recommend doing what I do, and buying the white skin one and getting it dyed. That way (Soom resin is reliably a different color each batch) you can just have it matched to a paint swatch, and have it turn out exactly the color you want.

    29. Thanks Layn! Dying is an intriguing idea that I'd never thought of myself, I may end up doing just that :)

    30. I really look forward to see the one with the new light purple skin color !

    31. Hi, everyone! Hope you donโ€™t mind if I ask Soom owners some newbie questions.

Iโ€™m thinking of ordering a supergem, but negative Soom reviews give me pause. Is it true that their resin is thinner, more prone to color changes, or less consistent in quality than it used to be? Have you had customer service issues? Or are they generally a reliable company with high quality dolls?

How well does their cream white resin age? Iโ€™d like avoid bright yellow, but a bit of golden โ€œmellowingโ€ doesnโ€™t bother me.

Any advice would be loved! :XD:

    32. I have many Soom dolls and I would say the quality is excellent and I feel it is getting better. I have many white skin dolls and none have turned yellow. I have never had a problem with thin resin and I haven't heard any complaints recently. I do get my dolls with faceups and it is possible that the faceup artists have noticed any problems with the head.

    33. Where are these negative Soom reviews, might I ask? I have Sooms from ten years ago and they're just fine. Thin resin sounds like a recast.
I had one doll take about 8 months to arrive about four years ago. Soom gave me so many points I used them for a first layaway payment on another doll the next year. In fact, I had mystery points this year which pushed me over the edge to buy Chalco in pale violet. I have been Soomed for a decade.

    34. I do remember some complaints a few years ago but Soom made some management and policy changes and I believe the manager of the Idealian group took over the Gem group also. I think the quality and packing has improved since then.

    35. That was the year my doll took so long. They lost their manager I think. But, they've come back strong. And it wasn't a quality thing I don't think.
      I highly recommend their dolls.

    36. Has anyone gotten am email from Soom lately? I'm not getting order Confirmations or shipping notices! If you are getting them what is the email address? I don't know if it is my email blocking them or something else.

    37. I got a shipping email notice from them yesterday (from the email [email protected])
Oddly enough this is the first time I've ever received an email from them. I've ordered a bunch of things over the last few years and I've never received an email from them (no order or payment confirmations and never a shipping notice). I always just assumed that there was a problem with my email account/blocking. So I was really surprised yesterday.

    38. Thank you! That is the same email they have used before. Yes, there are so many places they can be blocked!

    39. Just seen the rerelease of Beccia today :) she was one who got away first time as the extra large topheaviness put me off and was unsure how stable standing she would be with those tippy-toe fox paws.

To anyone who has a Beccia, how good can she stand on her fantasy fox paws?
      Thanks :)

    40. @operadoll All of my dolls (with the exception of one) are from Soom. I have only had one issue - my Albin's shoulder joint resin was thin enough to break and I had to repair it myself. Since the break happened after the first week of ownership, I couldn't get him replaced (I would have had to pay for a whole new doll according to their customer service). So that's the only issue I have had. All my other dolls have had thick enough resin and are still as white as when I ordered them. If you like the sculpt, I definitely recommend ordering from them! Just be sure to open your doll right away and check it - if there are any issues they will gladly help you but it must be within the first week. Their lay away plan is very nice and I like the quality of their costumes a whole lot. Their face ups are gorgeous too!

    41. Oh, pardon my poking my head out of the lurking shadows (and congrats to everyone ordering the recent Chalco and Breccia! I look forward to seeing what everyone does with them). I can't quite contain my excitement with 4 of my crew that should be arriving home tomorrow after a 4 month wait for face-ups. <3 I am so looking forward to showing them, several of which I don't think I've ever posted about on the forums.

    42. @jessholy - that's a very good point about checking your doll - from any company - and getting in touch with them for any issues right away.
A hassle with a company can put you off their dolls no matter how lovely they are. buying from a dealer helps, but with Soom you have to be your own quality control person. :apirate:

      • x 1
    43. @petiteballerine Exactly! I let him sit around for a few weeks I think before I even opened him and checked. It was a little upsetting but being able to fix it myself was a good lesson on how to do some of the crafting in this hobby. It doesn't put me off of buying from Soom but it certainly is a reminder to check my doll right away!

    44. A new discussion thread: Part 12
