Sideshow Collectibles: Court of the Dead BJDs

Jul 26, 2019

    1. I'm guessing they'll eventually be deemed on/off-topic, but Brigadoon feels like a safe place to put this for now.

Roughly 1/4 scale, resin, humanoid, strung with elastic, fully jointed, and heads that open up to allow for swappable eyes (not that the sales pictures of either the fullsets or the blank dolls make that in any way obvious... Sideshow, clearly much more used to catering to statue and action figure collectors than the BJD crowd lol)

I really kinda want to pick some of these up, but being bjds they're not cheap! I think I can probably spring for a layaway for one of these guys, but all three are so unique looking that deciding on a favourite sculpt will be difficult!

Court of the Dead Muse of Bone - Spector Blank Doll

Court of the Dead Muse of Spirit- Spector Blank Doll

Court of the Dead Muse of Flesh- Spector Blank Doll

The fullsets (below) are gorgeous - but the blank doll listings (above) show off the potential of the sculpts better I feel!

    2. I think they are beautiful! I follow them on instagram, but I honestly didn't know you could get them blank! I think the price is very reasonable. Muse of bone is certainly my favorite!

      • x 1
    3. I had been pondering ordering Bone for a while...so I just ordered her blank version.:XD: I was able to use some points that have been sitting in my account for a few years, so that small discount was a bonus. She will be fun to customize!

    4. Yay congrats @redmaiko ! Be sure to share pictures!

      • x 1
    5. they're really cool. I quite like spirit, her expression is really interesting. Part desperate, part serene.

But a bit out of my price range unfortunately.

    6. Ooh congrats on picking one of these guys up! I'm really looking forward to seeing what people make of these dolls when the pre-orders start being fulfilled.

For my part I'm trying to work out what sort of layaway I can afford (and if I could potentially budget for more than just the one doll since the whole limited run thing implies terrible things about their future availability). Alas I dropped all of my RPs on a certain extortionate Hot Toys Iron Man Endgame figure a couple of days ago - it meant I effectively got the Sideshow exclusive for the price of shipping lol, but oopf very bad timing!

If I only manage to budget in for the one of these dolls - the decision for me will be between Muse of Flesh and Muse of Bones... Though I adore the structure of Muse of Spirit's face too lmao! Muse of Bones is utterly gorgeous and very unique... But there's just something indefinable about the attitude of the Muse of Flesh headsculpt that's calling to me!

    7. Oh wow, congrats! I can't wait to see owner pics of these unique girls - I hope you'll post a few pre and post customization! :D

I really like all three of them, but I'd have a hard time choosing between bone and flesh. I'm curious as to how tall they actually are, though - the written description says 16", but the listed measurement says 18". :huh?: When you're talking about a doll that's in the 1/4 scale, two inches is quite a big difference.

    8. They are amazing. There's really no reason for them to be deemed off-topic so hopefully that decision will come in soon. I'm eyeballing Muse of Flesh myself.

    9. I saw someone online do a faceup of the Muse of Bone and she is beautiful. There's so much detail in the sculpting of these and they look heavenly.
I can't wait to see what people do with all of these, though. I bet it'll be amazing.

    10. We've concluded that these dolls are on topic for DOA, so I'll be moving this thread to the Mini-Size Discussion forum.

    11. With Halloween coming, I am getting excited for my Muse of Bone! I am sure I won't have her until after Halloween though. :P

    12. :D Yay!! Congrats to everyone who ordered one of these! I have been following them on Instagram and the custom versions are absolutely amazing!! I'm so happy to see more people excited about these and can't wait to see what everyone does with them!! (I ordered a Muse of Bone!) :aheartbea

    13. They had these girls on display at comic con. They are very nice in person. Bone's outfit its amazing.

    14. Awesome thank you for sharing!

    15. I desperately want bone full set! She’s stunning and her costume is amazing! I have too many dolls on order right now though.....argh!

    16. Argh I just pre-ordered! If anyone is interested in bone full set it’s on special offer at popcultcha until tomorrow it’s around 2/3 of the original price - so be quick!

    17. I think the price was only until midnight last night :/ but it’s still cheaper than buying from sideshow I think. Good Luck you know you need her ;P

    18. I got an email from Sideshow saying that production was delayed. That stinks, but it's nice to get an email saying so. December/January it is!

    19. I didn’t get any email but I ordered through popcultcha so maybe they were informed but didn’t let me know et?

    20. I just preordered a blank Muse of Bone, and it definitely seems like they'll be shipping around December or January.

I'm interested to see if the blank muses are that lovely semi-translucent resin the full set dolls are.

I feel like finding shoes for these girls is going to be hard though...

    21. I got another email delaying final payment recently, anyone else finding all the delays a little concerning?

    22. I've been following their Facebook and saw no mention of delays, which is extra-concerning. Normally, companies are more up-front about that. I've been waiting to see owner photos before I decide whether I'm keen or not, and started to wonder why I was only seeing their official collaboration/early releases to artists being shown on the page.

    23. It really is kind of concerning. I've been waffling for months over buying Muse of Flesh, and I kept expecting the dilemma to be solved with a 'sold out' notice on the website...but instead, they're still willing to take four part layaways starting now on dolls that were limited to 200. Maybe sales were not as good as expected, so they're stalling until more have been sold...? It's a pretty small niche; these dolls are definitely not going to appeal to the BJD collecting crowd that only gravitates toward "pretty," e.g., Fairlyand and such, and your average figurine collector is not going to understand the concept of spending $700 on a doll...especially since they're original sculpts rather than familiar, licensed material with a preexisting fan base.

    24. Uh I confess I've not yet ordered one of these (the cash that was going to be the first payment on one of the muses got spent rather impulsively on the epic Rocinante/Expanse kickstarter), but...

These sort of delays really aren't uncommon in collectible action figure /statue land. From other things I've bought from them Sideshow are a pretty decent retailer as far as that end of the collectibles hobby goes?

    25. Sideshow is a very well known and respected company. No reason to worry. They aren't going to run off with your money. Hopefully, there will be updates soon though.

    26. No worries here either. I have purchased from them before where there have been delays. I figure it's par for the course. lol

    27. Completely agree with the above 3 comments. I have something on pre-order from Sideshow (not a BJD) not due in until around April of next year, but I'm fully prepared for it to be delayed. Delays from companies that produce statues and 1/6 figures are normal.

    28. I got notice that my final payment would be processed and my Muse of Bone will be shipped next week!! Yay!!:dance:cheer:celebrate

    29. Congrats! I hope you will post her when she arrives - I'm really looking forward to seeing owner pics of these girls!

    30. Same!
I'm a little conflicted because it means my doll will be delivered to my office right in the middle of my medical leave (hand surgery is scheduled for the 4th) so while I won't be able to do anything with her anyway and I'll have to make someone come into the office with me to get her (which no one wants to do), I really should get her right away to make sure she wasn't damaged in transit, because the likelihood of getting replacement parts is better if I'm able to inform the company immediately. but it still means bullying someone into taking me to the office to get her :sigh

    31. I went to the page for the blank Muse of Bone and it looks like they added some photos. The box looks awesome, and they have a picture showing the eye putty included. So excited....I keep going back to look at her. I have been scouring Pinterest for ideas too much!
@Girrl I hope for a quick recovery from your surgery! Could you contact sideshow and have them change the shipping address to your home? Or is it that you don't have a way to accept packages at home?

    32. Oh wow these are incredibly cool. I personally love the Bone one

    33. Bingo. We live literally across the street from the ocean, which is usually great and all, but the super humid, super corrosive, salty and sandy conditions mean the call box for our building rarely works so deliveries either get left on the sidewalk outside (and stolen) or packages don't get delivered at all and the nearly constant wind tends to blow away the missed delivery tag. ^Sometimes^ delivery peeps get lucky and someone is coming/going, or they arrive when the mail carrier is around to let them in, but that's not really something I can count on.
The office, on the other hand, always has someone around to get the door and sign for stuff. And my office manager really brings the hammer down if any delivery peeps ever even think of trying any shenanigans ;)
(it's a law firm, if a package doesn't get delivered when it's supposed to it can be a HUGE problem)

    34. My Muse of Bone girl arrived!! :) The sculpting detail in her face is amazing, and she poses really well! She feels quite fragile though and her hand magnets are a bit hit and miss, but still beautiful :aheartbea

I've tried to attach a pic of her below but in case it hasn't worked, I've got some pics of her on my Instagram :)

    35. Does anyone know if the Muse feet are similar in heel shape to either Popovy Sisters dolls or PashaPasha minis? I want to get my girl some awesome heels, but am nervous they won't fit because there aren't really measurements for their feet. (My girl is still in transit)

    36. My Muse of Bone arrived on Friday! My excitement was immediately dashed because of a couple of issues, though. I could be wrong, but I thought the two axe-shaped things on her head would be sent not glued in place? Also, her hands won't go on! The magnets will just barely hold them in place if I have her hands up. :( I already contacted Sideshow, so I should hear back tomorrow.
I did a quick photo with my Dollshe Fashion Arsene for comparison, though. She is wearing the fullset Fairyland Chicline Ineffa dress, which is definitely still too big on top. lol And so far 10mm eyes have fit best.

    37. Congrats! Thou I'm sorry she has some issues.

Not helpful, but I always thought the head things were permanently attached :(

She looks real good with your arsene thou!

    38. Popcultcha got back to me to say they had contacted sideshow and the ETA had been moved back to March-April. I haven’t received any shipping notification or anything but I got a card through my door at the weekend to say I have a customs charge to pay and I suspect it may be my muse of bone! I will likely find out tomorrow morning when I go to collect the parcel from the post office.

    39. Sorry to hear about the issues, but I'm sure Sideshow will take care of them. What plans do you have for her? And do you think you will try and remove the bone fans?

    40. These are gorgeous! I would love to have a Spirit but I can't afford it right now. Bone is also very cool but I would want her to be able to wear a wig. I love their gaunt faces and it would be cool to have an MSD that's a bit taller than average. I'm one of those collectors that gravitates toward pretty dolls (my collection is all Fairyland and Lati) but I've always enjoyed spooky things too. ;)

      • x 1
    41. Meh...my parcel was something else entirely! Looks like I’m looking at March-April for delivery of my bone

    42. @skyealloway Thank you! We'll see what they say. :eusa_pray
@Greymews Thank you! If they won't replace it, then yeah I will probably try to. I plan to do a Yuki-Onna/Snow Queen. :) I have wanted to do a doll like that for years, and I am hoping it will work out!
@Cherryblue Darn! I hope the time wait goes fast for you!

    43. @redmaiko I'm really sorry to hear about the construction problems. I've seen several Bones so far (am I the only one who wanted a flesh, lol), and all of them came with the headpieces glued. Sideshow is new to the BJD game, so I guess they don't know that head accouterments should have magnets, so that they can either be removed entirely or make room for a wig underneath. The hands that won't stay attached are an upsetting trend that I've seen a few times, too - there is no way that they didn't realize this is an issue before they packed them up and shipped them! :huh?:

On the bright side - your girl is downright stunning. Construction issues aside, everything about her appears to be incredibly detailed and very delicate. (Although honestly, Arsene looks a little terrified. :XD:) I just love that gaunt face and ethereal body! I really hope that Sideshow helps you out with some of the important details...

    44. @celga Thank you! I received my replacement and now the hands actually stay on! I have yet to decide what to do about the bone fins though.

This is kind of a long shot, but does anyone know if Evangeline Ghastly is fairly similar in size? All I can tell from googling is that they are very similar in height.

eta: Finally found some measurements! Even Evangeline is bigger around than these sideshow gals!

    45. I don't usually post in progress photos, but I am very happy with the very beginnings of my yuki onna/snow witch! I usually use my airbrush just for sealing, so getting to use it for color is rare. I am quite pleased! This is just the start, so hoping the rest goes just as well!!

    47. I love your pics!

    48. I got my Bone today. The hand magnets are super weak, which is annoying, but I think if I stick some eye putty in there it will help.
I'm really excited to start painting her. She kind of looks like a mummy to me, so I think that's what I'm going to go with for now.

    49. That's awesome, I'm excited to see the progress

    50. I'm going to officially retract my earlier statement about the head things on bone - I just saw the official preview video for these dolls on youtube (which at the time were prototypes) and in the video the guy removes one of the head things and talks about future plans to release other head accessories. Soooo maybe they had trouble with getting them to stay and wound up gluing them....

      Anyone have luck removing them??

I'm finally in a better financial situation and coming back to look at Muse of bone again.:aeyepop:

    51. Ok I did it, I randomly looked and muse of bone was $65 off and free shipping, so I ordered!
Before I ordered, I called customer service and asked if I could pay for a spare head cap piece, and she said no. I asked if the issue with the hands had been resolved, because I had seen some online reviews that the hands were not fitting. At first she didn't understand, but then she put me on a long hold and when she got back on, she said the returns and exchanges team had checked their records and did not see that issues with the hands were a consistent issue. She said the team pulled a doll to check her, and she said the hands fit. She assured me that if I have problems I'd be able to call back.

So I feel pretty good. With the shape of her face kind of overlapping her head cap, I wonder if I could make a spare out of sculpy so she isn't stuck with just bone fine head.

      I'll let y'all know!

    52. I am super excited! My husband got a blank doll for me. The Sideshow box was just delivered and he whisked it away for Christmas but I’m pretty sure it’s Bone from the info printed on the cardboard shipper! Though, I’d be thrilled with any of them. I saw them at a previous comic con in San Diego when they debuted. Now I get to plan....oohh, waiting will be hard! :celebrate

    53. I had almost forgotten about these interesting girls, but now that I was reminded by a new post notification to this thread (my DoA notifications are pretty sporadic :sweat), I'm becoming enamored all over again. Although...while I love the Flesh fullset, I'm not crazy about her faceup. Wish I could get her blank with clothing.

I'm a little surprised, though - I thought they'd have been sold out long ago. I suppose that most Sideshow customers don't know what to do with the concept of a BJD, and most BJD collectors have never heard of them...so while it sounded like this was just the beginning of a new line for them, I'm guessing that it's actually the end.

    54. My doll arrived some time ago! she shipped and arrived super fast, leaving me with the impression there is a warehouse of them somewhere. I tried eyes and clothes on her, and shoes, pictures on my Instagram!

I think right now where I'm suck is I really need her to have shoes, and im really struggling to make them. At some point I'll need to get the courage to paint her too! I wonder if I should have just got the full set as well ....

If anyone wants to see, here are the pics I took so far Login • Instagram
I just realized I got so busy, I never posted a box opening of her!

    55. @skyealloway Ooo, she's quite lovely, and the posing is much better than I'd imagined! I expect you're right about the'warehouse'...Sideshow isn't generally a made-to-order sort of company, and it wouldn't surprise me if they had created hundreds of them right out of the gate - which would also explain the $65 off offer on the blank dolls if they're not selling well. (I wish they'd do the same for the fullsets! :XD:)

    56. @celga she is very elegant to pose! I haven't had a doll with this kind of hip joint before, but i like it! Knocking the hands off is an issue, so I put putty in her wrists to help the weak magnets. The head magnets thou are strong enough, no problems with her head cap coming off . And for those interested, I found she takes 10mm small iris eyes, there was some gapping at 8mm that could be resolved with oval eyes. They need to be flat back either way - the inside of her head is ridiculously tiny!
Here are some pics of her with a few different 8mm eyes I have, plus some inner head views.Login • Instagram

And she is strung so tight I can't get her head off. I plan to restring her because I worry about overly tight strings causing damage.
