Show us your OT dolls and figures

Aug 11, 2015

    1. @angelangel, thank you very much! He is a rather beautiful head sculpt (IMHO), most 1:6 male heads are a bit too "real-world-male" for me, so I usually go for the Japanese (or other Asian) video/computer game based character ones. They tend to be a bit more in my alley of "pretty-male" head sculpts, but there are not that many around. (:

The body I got him on is the World Box AT011, which is considered a "slim" body in the 1:6 action figure world. Similar in size to the Hot Toys "narrow-shoulders" body, but a lot more sturdier -- the HT ones seem like they are made out of paper, kind of like the RAH ones... DX I don't believe most of the 1:6 bodies available now will match Medicom's RAH Ginko, however, most are very dark tanned. Congrats on owning him btw, I was very sad and happy when I learned there was a figure of him, because it was too late when I learned of his existence, but I love Mushishi (I still hate myself for learning too late about RAH Darker Than Black Hei). There are some variations in color for the female bodies, but the males are mostly just variations of tanned, and very few based on real-life-athletes, are available in much darker tones, but not many (if any) pale ones I'm afraid. If you look at Toy Anxiety, or Monkey Depot, you might be able to find parted ones by Asmus, from the Lord Of The Rings figures. Some of those are a bit paler, but I've never seen them IRL to tell if any would be a good match. I do own a few RAH myself, but I have heard that most break if you look at them funny, so I've kept all of mine sealed in box -- they do appear a lot more pale than most 1:6 male bodies however, and from what I have seen on photos Ginko is paper white (as he is in the anime). The other issue you might encounter is most of the "slim/narrow-shoulder" bodies are pretty "broad," compared to RAH figures, so they might not work even if you find a pale male body. I think Asmus made a "teen" body as well, which seems pale in photos, but I think it is also much shorter than most 28-30cm male figures. I have seen one post on the Sideshow Collectors forum, of someone replacing their Light Yagami's body with an Obitsu slim (which is pretty thin compared to most 1:6 action figure bodies), so that might be an option for you if you don't mind the super narrow-neck, and probably won't find one white enough for Ginko, because their white is not as white as Volks Dollfie white, and even theirs I think is not white-white to match Ginko. Although, they might actually work since I am going by photos, and maybe Ginko is not that white IRL. I have seen replacement RAH bodies on eBay, but again, they'll probably won't match Ginko, because they are the standard "normal" colored plastic, and not the paper white Ginko appears to be in photos. Hope that helps, and I'm not confusing you more. (:

Edit: Just found some comparison photos of a "regular" RAH body compared to a Hot Toys narrow shoulders body, and a repair of Ginko broken body using a RAH spare one. By the looks of it, the HT narrow shoulder is a bit taller, and a tiny bit broader than the RAH one. Ginko's body however, appears to be much more muscular than the regular "slim" RAH body, so the HT narrow shoulders might be just the same size as Ginko if not slightly smaller. It's definitely not going to be pale enough, but if you don't mind having to paint the body, you can easily get authentic HT parted bodies form the shops I linked for you above. They part HT figures regularly; I'm not a fan of HT figures in general (with the exception of Japanese licensed game ones), so I don't know if they've released any new ones with paler bodies recently, but you can always check on there using their search features. Good luck!

    2. I've recently ordered a 3D printed ball-jointed kitten from Walloya Morring. She has a custom head and body blushing based on my original character, and she turned out really adorable! [IMG]

    3. @Enzyme OMG, thank you SO so so so much for such a detailed answer!!! Yeah, I remember when I first learned about the Ginko figure like years ago but couldn't afford him until earlier this year... I found him for sale on yja, I think it was, and I ended up buying him for myself as an early birthday present. He's actually the winter outfit set, which was apparently a special release, so I feel very special to have him. :3nodding:

He is really really pale in real life-- his skin tone is actually a little bit weird because it's kind of greyish, almost? So I think the color will be nearly impossible to match unless somebody parted out another Ginko (which would be... I don't know why somebody would do that). Thank you for all the links and resources-- the repair thread will be really useful if I'm not able to figure out an entire replacement body for him, so at least I know that I could frankenstein him if necessary. It would probably be easier than the one in the thread, too, since this person seems to have the set where he's wearing his white shirt, and my Ginko is wearing a turtleneck and long coat, so there's a lot less concern about making the parts match underneath all of the clothes. I'll poke around the part sites you recommended as well, since that seems like a really nice option. Obitsu bodies are sort of similar to Dollfies, right? Do you think it would be feasible at all to look around at vinyl doll bodies for him, or would his head & hands not work with those? What about a World Box body, like what you have? If I wanted his skin to match, I would probably have to paint his body no matter which one I were to end up going with, so I might as well keep my options open. What types of paints are good for these types of figures? I assume it would get rubbed off by the joints a bit, right?

Do you know much about whether the heads for figures like these would need any modifications to fit on a different body? I have taken Ginko's head off before (I undressed him to look at his joints and stuff when he first arrived, he's so well-articulated), and it seems pretty standard, but I'm assuming there are differences from company to company when it comes to head and neck fits. Thank you so much again for all the help! :D

@ViktoriaDaniels, your kitten is SO precious oh my goodness!!! I love the colors, and it looks super poseable. The size is way too cute, as well... I love small dolls! The eyes you have on it are super super unique, as well! What is it printed/made out of?

    4. @angelangel, I'll send you a PM. (:

@ViktoriaDaniels, she is super adorable, thanks for sharing such lovely photos her with all of us! I love her eyes! n___n

    6. She is beautiful stellarphenomena, I love the owl sculpture behind her. They are so cute together. (:

None of my boxes from Japan are getting shipped as of yet, but I did get two Bandai Anime Heroes Itachi Uchiha figures and a Funko Sasuke vinyl one from Amazon. I know some people can find these Bandai Anime Heroes at Target and Walmart, but I never find anything in my nearest stores, so I preordered Itachi fearing his boxes would be damaged (they always are). I would rather get them at the stores for many reasons, but I am never able to find them. I never got the Tamashii Itachi one, so I at least got this one (not even close, but oh well, it's what I get for waiting too long to find him). Also got one of the Tokidoki Supermarket Besties trading figures; I don't collect them normally, but I thought this tiny ramen container was super cute. I already collect a ton of s-stuff, so I try to limit my trading figure purchases to full boxes of Japanese licenses I love (or single figures of the characters I love) -- I've been tempted by the Tokidoki ones before, and a few Chinese designer ones as well, but I think these figures with fun containers will be my doom.DX

    7. Yeah, still waiting for my pre orders from Japan to ship. Someday, lol.

@Enzyme nice to see Amazon has figures. I’ve looked at some of the designer figures. Just so expensive, and I also have more than enough stuff, still...so cute and tempting.

I went and bought a traditional Japanese dollhouse kit, direct from Japan. It comes in parts so you can build just what you want. I got the Hiroen entrance (entrance to the back viewing garden),traditional Tea room, and Tokonoma alcove (for seasonal decoration). It’s 1/12th scale and made of Cypress. I want to eventually get all the parts to make an entire house. When I can afford them, lol (there are 6 more parts). I knew about this kit 10 years ago, but it was very difficult to buy. Not anymore! Where am I going to put it all....I don’t know....

    8. @kurogane that is exciting! Congrats! Please post it so we can see!

    9. @kurogane - Can you post the link to this kit?

    10. @Mahgiep and @xyuemoto absolutely!

Here is a link to the Etsy shop I bought the Hiroen Entrance, Tokonoma Alcove, and Tea Room. You can buy all three together, or separately.

Traditional Japanese Dollhouses by JapanDollhouse on Etsy

This shop only has the three parts, but the rest can be found on ebay (also from Japan, but cost a bit more). I went with this shop on Etsy as the price was a little less for all three with shipping (and sales tax, sigh). Looks like I will need to buy the rest on ebay. Starting with the back garden, then the kitchen, etc.

    11. @kurogane - Thanks a lot. Do you know what the brand name to use for ebay search?

    12. @xyuemoto I used ‘Japanese dollhouse’ as my search on eBay, and the seller is irodori_mart

I also decided to check out a buying service, and From Japan looks great. They have these dollhouse kits in a store they use, and for considerably less. I think I will try using them for buying these kits in the future. Why aren’t money trees real?!

    13. @kurogane, Amazon has a lot of stuff you need and some you shouldn't ever even be allowed to see. Lol! The only downside is they also have a lot of fakes. And yes, those designer figures tend to be a tiny bit pricey for their size. I guess the quality makes up for the price for most of them, but their tiny sizes are a bit underwhelming. I wouldn't want them to be Barbie size either, but most tend to be just a few inches tall (I got the Bao one, and he's barely two inches tall). Congrats on getting new doll houses to build! Those Japanese style ones have always tempted me, but 1:12 is too small for me, although if it was 1:6 it would be way too big and probably a fortune to get a few pieces in. I'm also looking forward to seeing your work, you always do such beautiful job building your tiny miniatures! Thanks for posting the links to where to get them, I don't think I'll get one myself, because I know I wouldn't finish one but they certainly are tempting and fun to look at. (:

    14. @xyuemoto your welcome! Finding authentic Japanese dollhouses is difficult.

@Enzyme thank you so much for the compliment! I’m kind of excited and nervous as I don’t want to mess it up. Thankfully, the instructions are in English, so it should be straight forward. I will need to write down what I use for the wood, so when I get other sections (which may take a very long time) I can keep them all looking like they go together. This will be my epic long term project, and my last (unless I get more display space.
And here I’ve been ignoring Amazon for anything hobby related and just shopping for necessities. :doh

    15. Double post...:eusa_naug

My Japanese dollhouse has been shipped, and expected to arrive end of this month (around my birthday). So excited!

Also I was able to get one of my Nendoroid pre orders, so Tanjiro will be arriving soon. I still have one stuck in Japan as I refuse to pay double shipping. I’m wondering if I won’t see him till next year? I kind of wish I could cancel, but I’ve already paid for him. Best to just forget.

    16. I just got notice that my Rimuru is delayed :( by a month. That puts it the same month as my big $ Fujiwara No Sai, and I wonder if he will be delayed. Oh well I'll just save my $ until I know for sure.

    17. @SteamWitch yeah, I feel for you. I don’t mind delays, but when they all end up needing payment at the same time is rough. I hope your delay isn’t too long!

I have one Nendoroid and four Nendoroid doll bodies on pre order, now all estimated to arrive all at the same time. My poor wallet!

    18. My Japanese dollhouse kits arrived today! Oh, wow, they are sooooo nice! Only one page of instructions per kit. Nice, but...kind of scary, lol. I’ll have to study them carefully (they are in English). Definitely going to get the remaining six kits, someday. I am going to be taking pictures as I work on them and will share. (What have I started? I have no place to display this epic house)

    20. They sent me the shipping fee for my preowned Wall-E (Wow, yikes and %^$#) and I asked if I could add a few more preowned items to my shipment to make the fee seem more reasonable, ha, of course they said yes. So I will have a few more tiny figures to go into the pub. :frownyblush:

      • x 1
    21. @SteamWitch yikes! I’m afraid to even think of what the cost is. Well, yay, for more figures? :sweat

I went to AmiAmi to see what my shipping options were for my Nendoroid outfit I paid for in May. Well, not good, sigh. Only ‘cheap’ option is ‘ground service ‘ and that is by boat. I didn’t even ask about a private carrier as I can imagine it being more than the outfit. Well, maybe I will get it next year.

    22. I got Wall-E and a few other preowned items shipped for about the same price as just Wall-E. More little guys to swap out in the Pub.

    24. @toufufu, congratulations she's gorgeous! I just recently learned about TInyFox, and I'm already a huge fan of DollZone, so it's kind of hard not getting tempted by their lovely sculpts. I guess it's a good thing (for me) they don't seem to have an international dealer yet, otherwise I would be in huge trouble.

@kurogane, congrats! I hope to see your builds once you're ready to show them or when you have time to build them! Lol! (:

@SteamWitch, those are so adorable! I've been tempted to ask AA to send some of my orders via DHL, but it bugs me to have only some of them shipped that way, and I can't justify to have all shipped via such a costly method. *sigh* I just hope it doesn't take until 2021 for them to be able to ship at least some of my packages. DX

    25. Thank you! I'm an international buyer and bought through Superbuy agent! It was a really smooth transaction and no problem for me ^^
I'm really impressed by the quality of this doll overall ^^

    26. @toufufu, I'm a bit of a paranoid old-fart. I prefer buying without any hassles. I always find super cool looking things on Taobao, but never order anything because I don't want to go through the hassle of purchasing via an agent. It's cool to know you were able to purchase that way though, I'm sure it will be helpful for others who know about Tinyfox and want to purchase themselves. (:

    27. I totally understand that! Hope there'll be a dealer that will cater to your liking someday ^^
It seems like some sets are selling out as well so take note of that!

    28. @toufufu oh, she is so cute! Vinyl and tiny! Thank you for sharing Tinyfox!

@Enzyme I have started working on the Tokonoma kit and have had a few issues. Not the kit, me!
I was going to do the kit just as it came, but then the old dollhouse maker inside me took over and this kit is going all custom. I’m staining all the wood a light walnut, re papering the walls a light off white and had to change the flooring in the Tokonoma as the piece is made out of plywood, the cheap hobby kind, and I’m going to use basswood to get a nice smooth surface (this is just a personal nit picky, drives me crazy kind of thing). I just want everything to match and be harmonious (like a real Japanese house, lol).

I did decide to order three more kits from the buying service From Japan. I ordered the Zen garden, the kitchen, and the Irori (hearth). It was easy, too easy, and I still need three more to complete the house, but I’m going to wait till the shipping goes down, if it ever will. The shipping cost me as much as one of the bigger kits ($72.00) ouch (but that was for three kits, via FedEx express as DHL cost more). But I can rest easy knowing I own all the ‘important ‘ kits. All that is left is a hallway, a back garden (place to do the laundry), and the front entrance. Thankfully, not much furniture in a Japanese house. I’m good at making the houses, but when it comes to decorating, not so much. Sorry for the epic monologue.

    29. I'd like to introduce everyone to my darling Tomo-Chan, my very first AZONE PureNeemo! I got her secondhand from someone off of Ebay a couple of years ago and have adored her since the day she arrived home. She's what got me re-interested in the dolly-hobby scene. Her personality is fun-loving and a tad bit ditzy. At first I styled her in more Lolita-styled outfits (which I tend to default to when I haven't decided on any styles or personality) but now her looks are totally retro-centric! I could go on forever about this girl but I'll leave it at that! :)

    30. She is WAY too adorable, oh my goodness!!!! Is the quality good? How's her poseability? She's precious.

@plasticcollective, WOW, what an adorable Azone!!! I love her outfit!!!

    31. @toufufu, yes, I had seen a lot of their stuff sold out on theri TaoBao a few weeks ago when I first learned about them. Their sculps and bodies are super cute, so I wouldn't be surpriced that they sell out. I never purchased through a dealer before, so I kind of don't want to try that now with all the stuff going on right now. I am not interested in a full-set, so hopefully, when/if they do get a dealer, I'll still be able to get the head and body I am interested in. Thanks again for the info and heads up! n__n

@kurogane, wow, you are so thougrough with your tiny builds. I guess that's why I rather not try myself. I don't think I would be okay with things not looking right straight from the kit, and then I would never finish anything because I'm indicisive to boot! DX I can't wait to see them, once you complete all your kits, and I love hearing/reading about your progress; it's fascinating. (:

@plasticcollective, she's super adorable. I own a few Pure Neemo dolls myself, some boxed up, some customized blanks. I never do anything with mine, so it's really inspiring to see what people actually do with theirs. Thanks for sharing. ^-^

    32. Thank you! The quality is SUPERB. This is my first vinyl doll so I cannot compare it with the other brands but the body texture is soft and smooth, really nice to touch. The body also weights just like a normal resin yosd. The joints are sturdy and locks in place when you set a pose, and is poseable enough! I do definitely recommend it! ^^

    33. Celluloid Dream

[IMG]Eleven years later... by Nadine, on Flickr

The Japanese man who makes these six-inch dolls uses 50-year-old metal molds; the dolls remind me of something you might have won at a carnival, years ago.

They are light plastic but he paints them beautifully and each differently, and sells an amazing number of very detailed clothes to go with them including some elaborate kimonos.

The only problem is that he only sells in Japan. I had my son-in-law use his Japanese credit card and have the first doll shipped to his parents in Tokyo. They brought it along when they came to the US. that was eleven years ago.

I finally broke down and used a Japanese shopping service to get the second one, plus some more outfits.

    34. @phanuel WOW, those are so cool!!! Do you know if he has a website? I'd love to see his other works (and maybe contact a shopping service about it)...

    35. Oh wow! Celluloid toys have such a cool look about them and It's particularly awesome to see someone in the modern day making them. I'm totally charmed by their classic look. Thank you so much for sharing these with us!
