Thanks, Teddy! I'm not super happy with it, but I take comfort in the fact that just about anything looks good on this doll. Finishing the blouse got me moving and I have now made a matching skirt as well. It's drying after washing out the chalk marks right now, so picures later.
@Lillith I really love the look of that sweet little blouse…white collar and cuffs against a pretty pattern has always been a favorite look of mine. @SaltedPretzel Oh my, that’s really too bad…we’ve all been there with our sewing so at least you’re in good company. It happens, and then you just keep at it until you’ve produced something wonderful. We always learn so much from our mistakes when it comes to sewing. Speaking of the occasional sewing failure, I’ve come to the point in this month’s project where I try to redeem my dismal design failure from last month’s ill-conceived apron, to make one that will actually work for the small size I’m working with. Here I go again!
This is quite lovely and your trim pieces really set off this sweet, sweet print beautifully. Well done!
Thank you! I still hope to make a few more pieces for her, but I may not have the time. Halloween is coming up and I may have been just a little bit ambitious about my costume... Uhm, it was an accident, I swear. But I may still be able to make her her own petticoat or an apron or some other simple piece. And if not I am still pretty happy with this round. Both skirts and blouses are good basic garments that goes with many other things in her existing warderobe, even if they are not very exciting by themselves.
@WintyGummyBear , I love the color and pattern combination on the skirt - bold and interesting! And just the thing to wear to an autumn forest walk. @Lillith , both outfits look neat and very carefully made. Love the white trims. @SaltedPretzel , sorry about your first attempt at the dress, and good luck with your next project. Lighting is still not good, but still, here is Anwen wearing the dress (thin stretchy cotton): dark mori - dress by helgie, on Flickr I poked holes in the hem and rubbed it over large-grain sandpaper. Some black glass beads are weighting down the four "tails". The pattern of the dress is simple, I didn't even need to make a closure: MiniFee heads come off rather easily, so I just put it on with Anwen's head off. I've been working on the coat, it is the most complex part of the outfit so far: Spoiler: progress on coat I assembled the patchwork using a sewing machine, the front and back are made up of 0,7, 1 and 1,5 cm wide strips: dark mori - coat progress 1 by helgie, on Flickr Now I've moved to quilting by hand, in straight lines on both sides of each seam and in a diamond pattern on the top black part: dark mori - coat progress 2 by helgie, on Flickr It's taking a lot of time, but the results so far are good. The whole thing is a bit lopsided, hope it will get better when attached to the lining/reverse side and steamed into shape.
@helgie Wow! Anwens outfit is going to be stunning. I love all the different textures and layers you've got going. That coat is going to be amazing, well wroth the work you've put into it. The quilting is very impressive.
@helgie This is looking SO good so far! I can't wait to see the finished coat. Everyone is doing so great! I wanted to join this round, but ended up making a lot of jeans and tshirts instead... Go figure.
I still think it looks good without the matching skirt as well, but it's your project and if it disappoints, it disappoints. Good luck! An admirable amout of piecing and handwork on this one. It's going to look so good wityh the dress too. Still very productive so it's not lie it was wasted effort. I'd have loved to joi n this roud but I'm still bogged down in other sewing commitments, some of which have deadlines I need to meet. Teddy
Oh, I disagree! I find good basic pieces very exciting indeed! They’re such a handy and necessary foundation for any wardrobe, and I love seeing what people do with them. Yours for this month are fabulous! I am so excited about what you’re doing here! Each piece has been so much fun to see and I love, love, love the distressing you’ve done on the hems. It’s a wonderful look! This is already looking so good…and I can’t wait to see the coat finished. This is such a fascinating project!
And after working hard on my assembly-line project all weekend, I’ve finally completed my sewing goals for this round. Now when my new Dollzone YOSDs arrive, they’ll have a cute, cottagecore wardrobe befitting their Pokemon trainer status waiting for them (if the measurements are correct…and I believe they are!) Eventually, once I actually have the dolls in- hand, I’ll be adding cute accessories to match…like arm and leg warmers, and perhaps matching hats, bonnets, or headbands of some sort. I’m holding onto all my gingham leftovers so I can have matching fabrics to use.
Thank you! You did an awesome job as well! Really love those layers. Will you be doing photoshoot in the wood?
Thanks for your kind comments everyone! It’s much appreciated. And to answer Teddy’s question, the dolls these are for will come in early ‘23. One in January and one in about March, roughly speaking.
And you've already made clothes for them - Wow! I'd still be meaning to amke a start when the dolls had actually arrived.... Teddy
Some accessory pieces will need to wait until they’re actually in-hand of course, but I knew ahead of time from size discussions here on DoA that they fit Blythe tops…and a simple flared skirt was a no brainer. So with a bjd already in-hand who wears Blythe type clothing, I was confident I could pull it off. And I needed something to fit into this round topic-wise and these fit easily into the cottagecore realm. I haven’t added the fasteners yet, of course, awaiting a final fitting once the dolls are actually here. But with the bulk of the sewing done, that will be an easy fix…and it’s nice to have another big project done before the holiday mayhem hits. But truth be told, I’ve done these rounds religiously for so many, many years (including way before I hosted them myself) that all my 50-ish BJDs have wardrobes already. It’s a bit of an “embarrassment of riches” really, so now I have to actually look to find projects to do when I want to join in (which I usually do!)
I've got my doll, I've got my stuff, but I was sick from a vaccine reaction and I don't think I'll get it done this month. Should I wait for the next time mori comes around? Or just post it here as I do it?
Either. It's entirely up to you, and how soon you want the project finished (and there's also the option of working on it in the next "Unfinished Business" round). What a pain that you reacted to the vaccination. Things like that can really scupper plans. I lucked-out this time around and didn't have a reaction, but previous vaccinations have left me feeling like I had flu. Teddy
So sorry about your vaccine reaction. Like Teddy, I was lucky this time too, but I know it can happen. What Teddy says about completing your outfit is entirely true, but I’d like to add that next month’s theme is “Designer’s Choice” which means you can make absolutely anything your heart desires!
Last minute apron: Over all I'm pretty happy with this month. Five new garments and a few things learned about working with browns.
I finished Anwen's coat! At 3 minutes to midnight and the end of October Photos will probably have to wait till the weekend.
@Lillith that turned out so well…such a delightful outfit with wonderful pieces that expand her wardrobe in a myriad of ways. I love the way those fabric patterns work together. @helgie Oooooh…I’m really looking forward to seeing what you’ve done! Congratulations on getting it finished! @WintyGummyBear What a fabulous photo! Thanks for sharing it with us, and a belated Happy Halloween to you too. And our latest Sewing Round is now up! /threads/sewing-project-designer’s-choice-round-116.862836/
Ahh, late to post (my computer charger decided to get dangerous), but I swear I finished this one in time! It didn't turn out quite as expected, I was working on the skirt and was like "wait no actually I am not in the mood to deal with sewing this to the bodice" but hey, it's all hand-sewn and complete. Fiadh even has a face and wig now!
@JaxxCapta I love the subtlety of that plaid and how lovely it goes with your girl’s coloring. Great job with all that hand sewing!
Finally some photos of the finished dark mori outfit: dark mori - complete by helgie, on Flickr The coat came out more like a padded jacket. This week I also made Anwen a necklace and shoes to go with the outfit. All in all this project turned out well and close to the initial concept. I did start knitting a scarf, it is now 3 cm long and already a terrible mess, with holes from missed stitches and torn yarn . But that's actually all right - the messy look will go well with the unhemmed skirts, and in the meantime it is good training in case I want to make something neater in the future. Spoiler: More photos The jacket is double-sided, the patchwork side is more interesting, but the other one - made of gray cotton micro-velvet - is more neutral and can make part of outfits in various styles: dark mori - jacket reverse by helgie, on Flickr Dress and underskirt look unexpectedly good on their own: dark mori - dress+underskirt by helgie, on Flickr
@helgie I’m absolutely loving this time-worn look on your girl! It has so much character and detail. You’ve truly done a wonderful job. I adore each and every piece!
