Wearables Sewing Project: Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 115 ]

Oct 1, 2022

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

Let’s take a walk through the forest, or a perhaps a casual stroll through a meadow, or a lingering afternoon spent reading in the garden…an opportunity to commune with nature. Wouldn’t we all love to do something so peaceful in our busy, hectic lives? Well even if we can’t, our dolls can! This month’s sewing project focuses on those styles that harken back to quieter times, and fit well into more natural settings.

      Week1: 10/1-10/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 10/8 to 10/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 10/16 to the end of October
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 116 ] Designers Choice!
      [ Round 117 ] Seasonal

    2. This goes up right as I get back home from a walk, thinking about an outfit I want to sew! :3nodding:

I know my sewing machine's busted (and probably still will be for a hot sec - I need to go call the repair folks to see if they can take my machine and, if so, when that would happen) but I might be desperate enough to scratch the sewing itch that I do some hand sewing.

With that in mind, I'll try to keep it simple. One dress, that's my main goal. I was thinking something on the cutesy side of prairie-y, with some longer puff sleeves, a gathered skirt (look at me, willingly gathering things... truly I am losing my mind), and a square neckline.

My stretch goal (that's more likely to happen than the dress, let's be real) is some socks. It's getting cold where I am, you need some nice, warm socks.

My model is Fiadh, who just came in yesterday! She's a Black Cherry Dolls Agave. Since she just arrived, she needs, uh, everything. Face, wig, eyes, clothes, the whole lot. I wanna go more cozy with her clothes.

I picked my main fabric out of my stash, and I have a thin white I'll probably use for lining, accents, etc. Patterns, I'm currently debating how to approach getting the bodice and sleeves to work - I have an MSD sundress pattern around... somewhere... with the bodice I'm thinking of, but I got this dress pattern from DGRequiem that has some of the elements I want, like a puff sleeve, low and square neckline, and I want to try the chemisette. I just have to tweak the actual bodice and cut it shorter. It does all need to fit over Fiadh's serious hips, though.

      Pics!

(Also, if anyone knows some good coat patterns or something, I'm dying to use that orange/purple/black plaid in the background.)

    3. I'll join this one!
I don't know how much time I can really spend on it, but I have this large-ish project planned since a while back that will fit this round perfectly, so I will use this as an excuse to get started.

A while ago a friend of mine gave me a bunch of fabrics from her stash. Several of them are in shades of brown and grey and coordinates really well together. I don't usually work with this pallet and I only really have one doll that wears these colours, but the fabrics workes so well together, they are begging to become some mix-and-match kind of pieces. There isn't much of each fabric, so a little bit of creative cutting is probably going to be neccesary.

      So, here are the fabrics:
I don't have a solid plan, yet. I think the fabric wih the stripes is going to be some sort of an apron or pinafore, but the rest is uncertain. I think I'll just start and see where it goes.

My model will be Beatrice, my Dollmore Narsha. She is the only doll I have who will fit the theme, I think. She is also the kind of cute doll that just looks adorable regardless of what you put her in, so she is easy to dress. ;)

    4. I'm definitely going to join in this one! I got some super cute mori-esque fabrics while hunting for last month's project, so I'm hoping to make some comfy sweaters and long-sleeved T's for my crew since the weather is cooling down <3

    5. I don't know if I will join. My girls are not very in the theme. ^^' But well, who know ? ^^
Can't wait to see all the beautiful outfits !

    6. Hello! I'd like to join this round. I have a lot of ideas for both my girls, but will focus on Anwen (FairyLand MiniFee Chloe) as she still has very few clothes. The plan is to make her a warm outfit in dark mori style that will include:
      - underskirt + skirt
      - dress/tunic
      - vest
      - coat
      - hood/scarf
      - socks, arm- and leg-warmers, belt.
Colors will be black, grey and dark blue.
I'm not sure I will be able to finish everything, but hopefully Anwen will have at least something new to wear for Halloween and late autumn.

    7. I would love to join this round ((:

I am planning to make my doll Jaellis (Mystic Kids Caroline + Xagadoll body) an outfit. I made the first version of this outfit several years ago and I am no longer happy with it, so I am trying again with (hopefully) more skills haha
the outfit consists of a white square neck blouse with a brown panel, a brown skirt, and an apron. if I have time I may also remake her petticoat, but I don't know if that will be necessary for now.

here is my lady, please excuse the state of her wig lol:

and here is a drawing of what I am hoping to create:

I'm excited to see everyone's work! :celebrate

    8. Famous last words?
Your model is adorable, by the way.

      Ambitious, but it sonds lovely!

Your sketch looks very pretty! Best of luck in making something you are happier with. And if you get stuck on something, Im sure people here have some advice.

For my own project, I've cut the pieces for a long sleeve blouse out of the white fabric with the tiny brown flowers. It's fray checked and ready to be sewn. This is exactly the stage where most of my unfinished projects stall, so we'll see how I get on. The good news is that I think there may be just enough of the fabric left for a matching skirt. :)

    9. Well, I’m going to give working with tiny gingham checks another try. I was happy with the pattern for the basic top and skirt I made from last round, but I hated the apron…it was entirely too bulky and busy for that small size. So it’s back to the drawing board for me with yet another of my Pokemon trainers who has yet to arrive.:sweat However, I’m confident my pattern will work for this girl as well since she has the exact same body as last month’s expected arrival. This time I’m going to make the same top and skirt, but change how I do the apron…or it may become more of a pinafore style, I’m not sure yet. And there will still be a pokemon on it of course…only simplified this time. Hopefully I’ll be more pleased with what I produce this month.:)

The doll I’m making this for will be my Dollzone Happy (whenever she arrives, probably early next year.) But I have my trusty stand in model, my Realfee June.

And here are my fabrics. I’ll probably try making multiples of the basic top and skirt, and several aprons featuring different pokemon. I’ll most likely work in an assembly line style.

    10. I'm going to give this a shot! It sounds strange but I'm going to be spending part of this month recovering from eye surgery and I found that giving myself something delicate like sewing actually helps. :sweat

    11. Pretty colors! And hard to go wrong with gingham.

What ever works. I wish you a smooth recovery.

    12. Oh it looks like we're in for some lovely makes this round.

I'll join in if I have time, but I'm still enmeshed in making two rag doll commissions, along with a full sized Victorian outfit for a friend to wear at a reenactmane event in the run up to Christmas, so I'll probably be admiring from the sidelines again for this round.

    13. I still have to sort out my photo storing situation, but I'd like to join this round. My model will be Dove, my Musedoll Rhe Che/Soom Super Gem hybrid. I got her this summer and she had a summer dress, but she needs a Mori outfit for the winter. At least a dress, pinafore, petticoat, stockings...I have some thrift store pieces I may cannibalize for this.

    14. The blouse is finished!
Over all I'm happy with it, but it is a bit boring. Hopefully it will work better when combined with other garments.

    15. That was quick. Well done!

    16. Thanks! I already had the pattern (I think I made it for a previous round of the Sewing Project), so it went together pretty quickly. In my experience, what tends to take time is making decisions, figuring out how to do things and coming up with workarounds for things that isn't working out. Once everything is figured out, the work itself is rather small.
I think what drained me the most for this blouse was the fact that the fabric was badly off grain, both in printing and cutting so I had to do battle with it and fight it into shape before I could even get started. I fear some of the other fabrics will have the same problem as they seem to be from the same source. But at least now I am prepared for it.

      • x 1
    17. @Lillith That blouse looks so good on your girl. Both the color and print are perfect for her. I’m really looking forward to seeing what pieces you add to complete her look.:)

      • x 1
    18. Thank you!
      I've finished her skirt tonight.
For the picture she borowed a petticoat from her sister, so I think she will need her own. That may be next.

For fun I tried on an apron from her existing warderobe and it fits so well I have no trouble seeing the new pieces fitting right in. I am looking forward to make her more things of her own.
I put the picture under a spoiler since it's not a new garment for this round.

    19. @Lillith Those are so cute! I love how the patterns go together.

    20. Thanks! I am very happy with it so far. It turned out way better than I dared to hope when I had just the blouse done.

    21. It really as turned out well - and it's great sthat sh can wear it with elements from her existing wardrobe too.

    22. @Lillith That looks so perfect together and the outfit is truly stunning on your girl. I love the colors and patterns with her wig color. It truly goes together remarkably well.:)

    23. @Lillith oww ! Your girl is so cute with that outfit !! It fits so well on her ! Very good job ! :D

    24. She is sooooo cute! Love the color and pattern :love

    25. This is the perfect round for my little Piggy! She is a YoSD Leeke doll, but I dont know the sculpt..... I've always envisioned her as a kind of wild child, and I recently discovered Goblincore (which is kindy of like a muddier, froggier version of cottagecore) and so that's what I'll be making her! My goal is a poet shirt, cuffed overalls, and a little belt and satchel. I want to cover it with patches and embroidery to give it a "well played in" look that's full of love :3nodding: I'll try to post a picture of her.....

      • x 3

    26. Sounds like a good plan!

      Teddy

    27. Goblincore! Oh how I love discovering new fashion aesthetics! I just had to Google it. This one is fascinating! Thank you so much for introducing it to me!:)

    28. It's a long-neglected plan of mine to make my SD-sized twins, Elfie, and Braken, outfits inspired by Brian Froud's illustrations in the Goblins of the Labyrinth book. They have a set of ridiculously large pointed ears each and, since they characters change depending on which ears they are exhibiting, they really need something that reflects the mischievous nature of their characters when their biggest ears are manifest.

{SIGH!} But in the seventeen or so years since Elfie firt ame homme to me, I still haven't gotten around to making those outfits...

    31. @Lillith Lovely blouse and skirt, and finished so fast! Your girl looks wonderful in the new outfit, and the apron is indeed a nice addition.

I've been working on Anwen's dark mori outfit. Made the underskirt and socks and started on the skirt, and finally took some pictures:
Anwen wearing the underskirt made of some crushed silk/viscose (+shirt from the last round), with fabrics chosen for the rest of the outfit:
[IMG]Dark mori - underskirt and materials by helgie, on Flickr

Progress on the skirt (cotton, with patchwork hem) + rough sketch of the full outfit:
[IMG]Dark mori - skirt in progress by helgie, on Flickr
I decided to keep decorations and design simple and a bit rough, with patchwork elements and unhemmed skirts, something that can actually be worn to the woods without worry of tearing it on the first bush. I also want to experiment with distressing the hem of the dress/tunic.

      • x 8
    32. I had a teacher once who used to say that nobody can see how long something took to do once the project is finished. The only thing important is the end resault. :)

Oh, pretty! Looks like there is going to be a lot of interesting detail in that outfit.
Technically, an unhemmed skirt would be a bad choice for running around in the forest. Not only would the fabric unravel very easily if caught on something (and there might be threads hanging that could easily catch), but without the hem to protect the edge you couldn't even wash the garment safely when it got dirty. But of course, the visuals are nice and dolls don't usually do a lot of actual running around. ;)

      • x 3
    33. Works for me!

I can't do the unhemmed thing - my need to have it "properly finished" would kick in every time I looked at it. I've even tried buying things that were designed and made that way and ended up hemming them myself.

      Teddy

    34. @helgie I’m really loving your designs and fabric choices for this round. They look wonderful! And I personally adore the idea of a distressed hem look. I think it perfectly suits the casual, worn, darker nature of the aesthetic. In fact, I used a similar idea for my cottagecore offering this month as a way to keep the look casual and time-worn. I just let the edges fray, and I really like the look. I worked hard all weekend, assembly line style, to get all my outfits to this point. It was a pain on my hands, but I’m glad I stuck with it. Those little tops are blythe size…so yeah, ouch!:sweat

    35. Welp, flickr locked me out :| so I'm working on reclaiming my account, but I have some fabrics picked out- a few lovely cotton prints in green, blue, beige, and yellow, some brown crinkle something with gold pinstripes, and a sunny yellow denim with green pinstripes. I also have some faux shearling that I want to make a little jacket from! I may have to make more than I originally planned in order to use all these lovely fabrics :daisy

I love all the progress everyone is making! It's so nice to work alongside other crafters and other dollies!

      • x 2
    36. Considering moving on to a larger project just to keep from straining my eyes too much. I'm currently working on a dress for a tiny, and it might be a little too small for me right now!

    37. Oh, true :XD: I was in a forest just last weekend, gathering mushrooms, and the best skirt to wear is no skirt at all, but a pair of sturdy trousers. The unhemmed look is a kind of a compromise between practicality and the flowy lacy designs often found in mori outfits. I appreciate the aesthetic, but cringe at the thought of wearing them in a forest, even for a photoshoot. And I do hope to take Anwen outside for some pictures.

    38. I also have trouble with letting finishes be (or in this case, not be), so this is me working towards a more relaxed attitude :) It did save quiet some time and effort.

    39. Thank you!
And ooooh, so many lovely outfits! :thumbup

By the way, I discovered that tearing the fabric by hand instead of cutting it with scissors helps with shedding and adds to the general frayed look.
And by "distressed" I meant unhemmed, but also additionally frayed, maybe a bit torn and rubbed with sandpaper. I'll just have to see what works best with the fabric. Dark mori is restrained color-wise, so I'm working more with textures.

    40. A little late but I've also decided to join this round! My model will be Odette, my Resinsoul Xun.

My style will be more casual and earth tone. I want to make a cute long shirt and a skirt with many fabric sewn in together. Not sure if I can do it but I will try. Wish me luck! :XD:

    42. Thanks! Will do my best ^_^

    43. I've strated on a second blouse for Beatrice. This time a dark brown fabric with a white floral pattern. Same style as the last blouse, but with white collar and cuffs.

    44. Wow - you've got a lot done!

Good luck with whichever you go with

Well done! - I just can't do it.

Sounds cute. Good Luck! I'm sure you can do it.

Sounds good. Looking forward to seeing it.

    45. Thank you for being supportive as always! :whee:

    46. Tonight I put the second blouse together. It's finished except for buttons and button holes.
Right now I'm not impressed, it looks like a mens shirt from the 60's and not in a good way. But considering how much I liked the light blouse once I combined it with the rest of the outfit, there is still hope.

    47. That's a shame, but perhps it's one of theose garments that blossoms when you combine it with the right things... or perhaps adding some lace or trim would help...?

      Teddy

    48. @WintyGummyBear , good luck! Hope your project is going well, the subdued forest palette is a great choice for your girl.

Meanwhile, the skirt of Anwen's dark mori outfit is finished:
[IMG]dark mori - skirt finished by helgie, on Flickr
The dress is also finished, but the weather and lighting have been terrible recently, so no pictures yet.
I've moved to working on the coat. Like the skirt, it will have some patchwork elements.
Not sure if a vest is actually needed, will decide on it after finishing the coat.
I'm thinking if trying to knit or crochet the hood. Then it will be guaranteed to have a rough/lumpy look, as I haven't done either since some awkward attempts when I was a kid. The other option is finding the thin black fleece that I think I had somewhere in my fabric scrap stash.

    49. Pretty! Your outfit is coming together so well.

    50. Ooh I love her outfit! Also her blue toe socks! :love

    51. Thank you! Your outfit looks great!! I love it!
The weather has been terrible here too. The leaves are pretty but it's been raining non stop. Hope we will have some good day to do photoshoot :)

    52. Nice. And good luck with the other elements of the project.

    53. @helgie That looks so good! I really love the look of those hemlines…they truly add some lovely texture to your outfit and give it a wonderful character. I’m excited about your other plans too. This outfit is utterly fascinating to me.:)

    54. I got the outfit done! The top that I made to match with this skirt is not matching so... here is the skirt with a plain white shirt that looks much better :XD: When I have time, I will be posting the top that I made later.

    59. I technically "finished" my little dress but it's... really ugly and too small! :doh

I'm going to see if I can stitch together something quick to complete this round. I'd really like to get back into sewing!
