Wearables Sewing Project: Designer’s Choice! [ Round 116 ]

Nov 1, 2022

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

It’s time to let your inner designer run free! This month our focus is on creating whatever our heart desires…no matter how lavish or how simple. The choice is entirely yours!

      Week1: 11/1-11/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 11/8 to 11/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 11/16 to the end of November
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 117 ] Seasonal
      [ Round 118 ] Fairytale
      [ Round 119 ] Leftovers and Recycling

    2. Would that I'd have the time - Once again, I will (probably) be too buy with other sewing commitments to do anything more than cheer everyone on from the sidelines.

    4. Oww so cool, a free idea month. ^^ I will try to sew a thing or two, I have a lovely girl coming to me and she will need something to wear. ^^

    5. Oh, I have so many planned projects that could be a good fit for this round. I have other things going on, but not so many sewing things.. uhm.. I think. So maybe I can fit it in without it getting in the way of anything else.
Photos are becoming a problem. This is the dark season so if I want natural light I only have a small window around noon and my artificial light sources are, let's call it improvised. But you guys are used to my crappy pictures by now, right? :sweat

      So I'm in!
Now I just have to decide on what project to make.

    6. We're not here to pass judgement on photo quality - we're here to enjoy what everyone's making.

Personally speaking - if there's natural light I switch the flash off (if I remember), and if there isn't natural light, I switch the flash on... and that's as sophisticated as my phtography gets.

    7. Unfortunately, the flash can trigger migrane for me, so I only use it as a last resort. Working for prolonged times in too strong light can also be a problem, so I tend to keep my photo sessions brief. Especcially if I need to edit the pictures right away since I need to save myself for the screen time. For general use I have the computer screeen on a very low light setting and that works fine most days, but for photo editing I need to have it on a more "normal" setting and that drains me fast.
It's still possible, I just need to be a little bit aware and economical about it.
For good daylight days I have a semi-permanent setup under a skylight where I can just place the doll and snap the picture and it almost always works, at least for dolls MSD-sized and smaller. It's a nice, low effort solution. For bigger dolls, larger setups and low light days I need to be a bit creative.

    8. Well poop, @Lillith that makes it all a bit more of a production number for you, doesn't it.

Best of luck with the light levels over the winter months

    9. @Teddy Thanks. I'm finding more and more workarounds as I gain experience and the dolls are the only thing ever that have actually motivated me to get better at photography at all. So that's a win, right?

I have decided to use my Maracreatures Ramunder for this round. He has been sitting in limbo for way too long. He is heavy, cumbersome and he does not stand on his own, but I still think he is the coolest doll ever. He is a challenge to photograph because of his size, though, some of my regular tricks doesn't work for full body photos. But I need to find better ways to do that anyway so I'll see it as an extra challenge.
I call him Aldhissla, after a troll character that the band Finntroll uses in some of their songs.

The plan is a basic tuinc to start with. I have a lovely, muted blue gray wool that I will be using. I think it will drape pretty well in this scale.

    10. Yay! He's SO cool!

      Teddy

    11. Blue gray sounds like it would go perfectly with this fellow's looks.

    12. Ramunder! Yay!! <3

    13. He is gorgeous. Im looking forward to seeing what you sew for him.

    14. I'm hoping to actually get some doll sewing done this month! Last month all of my creative efforts ended up getting pulled into AWA cosplay prep *_*

    15. I have been wanting to get involved with these fun projects for awhile now! This would be the perfect round to start with as - I have to admit - most of my dolls have no clothes. :nowords: I hope that I will have the space to do so, but we will see. Between health issues and needing to prioritize other sewing commitments, I might not be able to join in until next month. I will at least follow along and be inspired by everyone's projects! :3nodding:It's nice to actually feel some inspiration for my BJDs again!

    16. Hi everyone! I'll be joining this round too even though I'm in the middle of moving from country to another country :aeyepop: Not sure if I will be joining the next 2 rounds because my sewing machine will be in a storage while I'm finding a new place to live.

Anyway, I will be sewing for my new girl, DIM Flowne! I'm still finding the right name for her. I would love to sew her a yellow dress and a corset inspired by LittleBruke, my favorite model/artist. Wish me luck!

    17. I'm so excited to see him with a new outfit! Looking forward to that :love

    18. Best of luck

Sounds like a good reason to join in

Real Life does interfere sometimes - I'm not joining in this month due to (many) other sewing commitments. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to be able to get a start this month.

Yeek! Well, good luck with both the move and this rund then.

      Cool.

    19. Thanks! I think I might as well at least try and start a project. It's so hard for me to make a decision, lol. I'll just see how it goes! :)

I've decided - after much going back and forth - that I will work on an outfit for my newest addition, Soom Io. His tentative name is Leo and I'm going steampunk with him! I've wanted a steampunk doll forever and it's never worked with any of my dolls before. Here's my inspiration pic.

It should be pretty simple. I plan to make the long vest as close as possible though I might tweak the shirt a bit. The hat will have to wait until later but The rest of it I feel can be managed. :)

    20. Yay!

Good luck with your steampunk plan!

      Teddy

    21. Hello! I'm a bit late but would like to join this month too. I had a lot of mori/cottagecore ideas for the last round and will work on one of them: a tiered loose-fitting dress for Anwen (FairyLand MiniFee Chloe). This spring I made a dress like that for my LittleFee:
[IMG]Spring in the woods - climbing by helgie, on Flickr
even took her to the woods to take some pictures and made a gallery post. Now I'd like to try a similar design in MSD format, with some adjustments (detachable collar, different construction around the shoulders, more tiers) in thin black cotton with a pattern of white stripes and blue-green and red flowers. It should make for a nice everyday winter dress.

    22. So many cool projects this month!

    23. "I'll post in a sec," I kept saying, for nearly half the month. "I've got time."

Anywho, seeing as I still need to get my sewing machine fixed but last month was a bit of a confidence boost for hand-sewing, I decided I'd try to make a shirt and overalls for Nova. (Though they'll get shared, I'm sure. I nearly had Ara be my model instead of Nova.) I'll just have to figure out what the best way is to handle finishing the hems on the overalls. I did procrastinate posting here long enough that I got the shirt done!

Super excited to see how y'all's stuff turns out!

    24. Looks like you're off to a great start with that shirt.

    25. @JaxxCapta I like your choice of fabric, so colorful, and the shirt looks good on your girl.
Hope everyone's projects are going well despite the November gloom :3nodding:

      Dress started:
[IMG]Black tiered dress - progress 1 by helgie, on Flickr
The most structurally complex part around the collar and shoulders is done (except from closure on the back), the rest will just be a lot of gathered rectangles. The first one - the topmost out of 3 front tiers - is attached. I also cut out the top parts of puffed sleeves. I need to see how the sleeves interact with the front panel and then draw up the back and possibly additional side panels.

(And Anwen finally got a faceup! I'll post a thread about it)

    26. The dress is mostly assembled:
[IMG]Black tiered dress - progress 2 by helgie, on Flickr
After taking this picture I finished the second sleeve and am working on the closure on the back. To be done: attach the bottom tier to the back/sides, vertical seams, hem. Then I'll hopefully have time left to make the separate collar - in white cotton with some lace.

    27. Yay!

      Teddy

    28. It looks GREAT already, I can't wait to see it done!

    29. That’s looking so pretty! I love the fabric pattern…it’s so lovely and wonderfully in scale. And I think the tiered look is perfect for the style you’re going for. I’m really looking forward to the addition of a white collar with lace. I’m very fond of that collar contrast against a darker fabric…it always has a delightfully quaint and old-fashioned feel to me.:)

    30. I got it done guys! The skirt isn't as long as I wanted to but it's ok :celebrate Hope you enjoy!

    31. Yay! Nicely done and that yelow is gorgeous.

      Teddy

    32. Oooh wow, I love how it goes with that corset! She looks like a daffodil :)

    33. How pretty and cheerful she looks against the snow. I love how the yellow and her hair goes so beautifully with her eyes. It’s a sweet style that looks amazing on her. Well done.:thumbup

    34. @WintyGummyBear So pretty ! I really love the contrast with the snow ! I have a Flowne too (well, she really needs a body... hum...) and I love this sculpt. ^^

I really wanted to sew for my dolls but, again, illness is here. =_= Will see if I can finish one thing or two.

    35. Thank you so much! I thought it would make a good contrast with snow :)

It's always fun to make corsets! You're right. Made me think of daffodils too :love

Thank you! I had to try on so many eyes to find a perfect ones to go with the project :whee:

Such a sweet sculpt right? :aheartbea I really love her too! Can't wait to see yours when you have the body for her.

    36. Hi! I haven't been around lately but I'm going to get into gear and do some sewing to keep my sanity. I may not be able to start and finish something this month but next month sounds pretty good.
@pepperonipizza I'm looking forward to that outfit. I have a new member of my steampunk group and he needs clothes too.

    37. This is so cute and I LOVE the fabric choice! I am excited to see the white collar! :D

So pretty! The color of the dress goes perfectly with her beautiful hair. <3 The yellow is just perfect against the snow. :)

Sewing can indeed save the sanity! I hope you are able to find the space to do some. :) I need to post pics of what I got done 2 weekends ago. I just haven't been up to it nor working any more on his outfit. I am pleased though to have the shirt and pants done. I'll try to post very soon as I am basically out of time on this project to go much further.

    38. Thank you! It's my first time doing photoshoot in snow. I figured bright color should be good against it. Super cold though lol

    39. This months projects didn't take off at all for me. I've barely got started.
I have the over all design, the measurements and the materials, but I haven't actually done anything on the garment itself. I will have to save it for another round. "Fairytale" sounds promising, he is a troll, after all.

@helgie and @WintyGummyBear You both did great. Those dresses are both lovely!

    40. @helgie That dress is absolutely lovely! And what a fabulous idea to make the collar removable…I would never have thought of that, but it’s brilliant!:thumbup

    41. It's been lovely seeing what people came up with and made. I knew I was taking this month off because NaNoWriMo ate my soul and I cannot do that and sewing but hopefully next month I can do something.

    42. Looking great! Can't wait to see her with collars!

    43. @PoeticSoul , @WintyGummyBear , thank you. I ended up with only one collar, the fabric I had in mind for the second one turned out not to fit the dress as well as I hoped. The option is still there, though, and the one finished collar can be worn with outher outfits. And I did add stockings:
[IMG]Black tiered dress - finished + collar + stockings by helgie, on Flickr
And apparently I'm not finished with this outfit and want to add some outer layers to turn it into a proper winter ensemble. As it fits December Sewing Project's theme quiet nicely, I suppose I'll just go and sign up

    44. @helgie .
Love the outfit, particularly the sleeves! <3

    45. Great work! She is now remind me a little bit of Wednesday Addams from the new Netflix series. I love how the outfit came out :love

    46. Took a couple months off, rough time of year at work and in my personal life too by coincidence. Hoping to jump back in soon, but just wanted to say hi and I hope everyone's been well! Beautiful work this round all around as always <3
