Sculpts you love (but will probably never get) - 2

Apr 23, 2017

    1. Dollfie Dream and other anime-looking dolls! I don't personally want to have one like that (I prefer a little more realism in my dolls) but they're gorgeous to look at! That, and DD is too big for my collection (I tend to stick with 1/4 size).

    2. Tamikan Space! I am in love with their Hybrid and Aua sculpts, they’re so unusual and beautiful and delicate. But they’re only 37-38cm and I really only enjoy dolls in the SD-70cm range, so $400-450 is a lot to gamble on a doll I may not like due to her size. I sure do enjoy photos of them, though! :love

    3. oh... so many SD sized dolls. Dlace especially. I love their dolls, especially Ex. Machina 2.0 and their male medusa head, but between the prohibitive cost and the fact that any dolls bigger than 1/4th scale inexplicably terrify me in person... I do not think any of their dolls will grace my collection. However, I absolutely drool over their promotional images often. Their dolls are incredibly lovely; just not for me. Rugged Realism too. love the dolls, not a fan of their size.

    4. Fantasy dolls are so cool but I doubt I'll ever own one. I've been really tempted by a select few but I could never bring myself to commit - I guess fantasy dolls aren't quite as versatile as regular human ones, and a lot of the time they would require custom clothes or accessories which all seems like a huge pain in the neck, so I'll stick to admiring photos of them online instead.

I also really like the idea of 1/8 and 1/12 scale dolls and love looking at other people's, but will probably never own any either. I'm kind of a bull in a china shop and I can't imagine how clumsy I would be trying to change out the eyes on a teeny tiny little head like that. For me I think 1/6 is as small as I'll go, lol.

    5. Dollshe - especially if bought straight from the company. Gorgeous dolls, terrible customer service and wait times.

Also any centaur dolls - just because of the sheer space they'd take to display in a way that shows the full doll.

    6. I like to look at so many companies - Iplehouse, Souldoll, Doll Valley, Doll Chateau. I like to look but I know I won't buy. I used to think I wouldn't buy any dolls from Luts or Volks or Fairyland...and here I am with a Luts head, 3 Volks dolls, and a Fairyland doll on the way. I think for me - it helps that MOST of my dolls have elf ears and the slightly unrealistic faces. I loved Iplehouse's Elf Ladies but they looked too realistic for me.

I also like looking at Dollfie Dream or Smart Dolls but they are too anime for me. Plus I know my dolls would stain because I don't let them lie around naked.

I do like looking at different fantasy dolls but I do worry about space/how easy is it to break that part. My poor Soom fairies never really wear their fairy wings or legs because I'm too scared my cats will mess them up. (One cat thinks their wigs are toys. Luckily he seems to have forgotten that lately.)

What I enjoy the most is seeing what people have here on this forum! Even if I would never own that doll, I like to look at how everyone styles them and it's inspiring!

    7. SDs for me too, but Switch in particular... I really, really love their head sculpts/style but they're just way too big for me, and I'm not a fan of the muscular male bodies that you tend to find once you're in the SD size range. There's also a ton of artist dolls that I can only describe as statuesque I love to looking at, and I really appreciate the effort it must have taken to sculpt, but I could never picture myself actually owning one.

Also those really art-piece head or toros only dolls, like Dollzone's 'The Moon' or Conarium's candlestick heads — I think they're really beautiful, but I'd personally miss having the ability to pose the doll or change things around too much!

    8. Soooo many. Mostly a lot of bigger dolls because I'm so much more comfortable owning smaller dolls.

I absolutely adore what Nihilum Dolls is doing but a) the smaller doll thing and b) once you include currency conversion it's just out of my price range for something that's not a fullset.

I'm also into the bigger Nothing Sapiens/Tamikan Space alien ladies as they are gorgeous but again, size is too much for me so I live vicariously through others.

Dollshe Orijean. Uugh, I love this dude but he's massive. I also don't think I'd ever buy direct from Dollshe so it means I'm pretty safe if Dollshe ever decides to shrink Orijean down like he's done for other dolls since I also have very specific ideas in mind that would probably be difficult to find second hand. Plus Dollshe discontinued two of the resin tones I was interested in, so again, safe!

Pretty much everything Iplehouse. I love their realism, but I don't think I could own one. I've seen a few of their SID and EIDs in person and they're absolutely gorgeous but between the size, heft and realism I don't think they'd have a place in my collection. They've also discontinued a few of my favourite smaller dolls and I've never seen them up for sale secondhand.

And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head! I'm just very quick to love almost any sculpt, so I tend to be picky when it comes to buying or else I'd have waaaay too many dolls, no space and no money.

    9. Mainly Dollfie Dreams. I adore looking at them and seeing all the amazing things people do with them but I could never own vinyl as I'm too afraid of the inevitable staining. Also any really realistic sculpts like Iplehouse. I owned a Raccoondoll briefly but realized that as gorgeous as they are, I like owning dolls with more stylized features.

    10. There are a lot that I love for their artistic concepts but could absolutely not own, like Doll Chateau for example. They have cool, sometimes a little weird, ideas...but I don't care for the faces or owning dolls that are too weird. I feel too restricted with them somehow? Often a case of "I would like to paint it/I just enjoy the full-set, but don't want it in my house for longer than one photoshoot". Also true for DLace and the like. There are so many dolls/companies I find very inspirational and admire for their ideas, but I prefer to look at their dolls only.
I love looking at anthros and pets as well, like Pipos or any small critters, but once again I just can't imagine myself owning one. The anthros are cool, but I got no use for them, and the pets often feel very limited for their high price. In the end they just stand around and look cute, and that's not enough to live here

I love Dollfie Dreams on photos, but owning one was a little disappointing. The staining issue alone was so incredibly stressful that I sold mine and gave up on it. Some of my favorite doll photographers are DD ones still though (like Azure_TB).

And gawd, I love centaurs, but again something I can never imagine to have in my household. They look and handle so nicely, but eh :sweat

    11. Granado for me. I really love the Mars sculpt that was released a couple years back. I mostly collect anthro bjds and one and in the future two 1/4 size boys. I wouldn't get into the bigger dolls. If they made a 1/4 size of Mars, I would be in heaven!

    12. Years ago when I was a teen It used to be Fairyland. Now that I have minifees I now look at artist dolls like Atelier Momoni and while I appreciate them I don't think I will ever own one. Not because of money but because I don't want to add too many variables in my collection.

      • x 1
    13. oh my! this is the first I've heard of this company but I'm thrilled to find that they're actually my favorite size to collect! I, too, adore their sculpts! (that heart-headed BJD is incredible!!!) Much like Dlace, their dolls are all kinds of creepy and lovely. I'm so happy to have seen your response and learned of these dolls!

      • x 3
    14. For me, it's doll chateau. Their sculpts are beautiful and unique, it's just not the "style" of dolls I feel the need to own. I LOVE looking at owner's photos, though :D

    15. There are plenty of dolls I think are cool, but know won't match the ones I have. Beautiful mature tinies like those by Agatti and Solar Wind. And cool fantasy dolls I'd rather look at than own, or at least, haven't made anything to change my mind yet, like Doll Chateau and Dream Valley. And the occasional one that is perfect, but not the right size or proportion.

And then there are the ones that are simply more expensive than how much I care to own them. I've budged on price when I realized I cared more than I thought, but for others dolls, I'm fine with looking.

      • x 3
    16. I love love looooove the look of fantasy and "strange" dolls (like Doll Chateau, Dream Valley, Soom monthlies), but I haven't seen one that's pushed me over the edge into purchasing. That may change in the future, but nothing yet. I think it's because part of my joy in the doll hobby is playing dressup with my dolls and changing their look, but fantasy is often more restricted in clothing choices due to specialized sculpting. I mean, why would you want to cover up your doll's intricate and cool spider parts?

I also think more realistic sculpts are super beautiful, but not to my personal tastes. Iplehouse comes to mind, as do several smaller artist sculptors. I'm just more into having dolls that have some artistic liberties taken instead of hyper-realism for my own collection.

Oh! And anthro dolls. Again, I like looking at other people's pictures, but they just don't turn my crank enough for me to bite the bullet and order one.

      • x 2
    17. hmm, I don't really know. Perhaps the Popovy Sisters work? Maybe also Soom Idealian, they're really cool and I love the fantasy parts when they have them but I don't really love any of them enough to buy one. For the most part though, if I love a doll, it'll go on my imaginary list of "if money was no object" want to buys.

      • x 3
    18. The dolls I look at the most are the beautiful male dolls. Soom Idealian, Impldoll, Iplehouse etc. But I have veered away from SDs because of limited space, and now only buy MSDs. My dream would be to have a whole room just for dolls, but right now I only have a small bookshelf.
I also admire the creative imagination of Doll Chateau, but they are a bit too freaky for me.

      • x 3
    19. I'm in that boat with a lot of independent artists' dolls... I love the creativity and the diversity of designs, but I know those sculpts wouldn't really fit in well with my own crew. So, I sort of cheer from the sidelines and encourage other people to go for them.

      • x 3
    20. Although I really want one, I just can't see myself springing for a minifee. I love their size and that currently the have the market on clothes and accessories (for when I can build room boxes) but that's not enough for me to buy them. Same for artist sculpts. I'd love to get one sculpt from all the indie sculptors...I really want a Silk from Nyx's Creations and a Boudi from Boudi doll and Nathan from Nihilum dolls and a Trompette from La Compagnie de Radis and and and....just have to save

    21. Adult female dolls. I LOVE looking at everyone's beautiful ladies! So many of my favorite Other People's Dolls are grown women. Heck, one of my favorite sculpts over all is Charm Doll's Trista! But for whatever reason, I'm super put off by the idea of owning one of my own. I think it might be because a primary reason I like dolls is the sewing for them and fashion aspects. And because I AM an adult woman, I have no desire to get an adult woman doll to play dress-up with. I sew most of my own clothes, so I can play dress-up with myself, lol. Meanwhile, little boys and girls and adult male dolls give me an opportunity to design/make outfits I wouldn't otherwise get to.

As for specific companies, a lot of people have listed companies like D.Lace, Doll Chateau, Dream Valley, etc...And I'm right there with them. I LOVE looking at owner pictures of horror themed dolls, but they don't quite fit in with my current collection. When I first started with BJDs, I didn't think it would matter to me whether or not my dolls "went together," but as I've gone on I've found that it actually does bother me if they don't all look right together. Alas, this also means that sculpts on both the too-realistic side (Dollshe/Granado/Iplehouse/etc) and the too-stylized side (DoD/Lilycat/etc) are forever out of bounds for me. I'm settled in quite firmly in the Volks/Luts/Soom sort of category.

And for Doll Chateau specifically, I think they're just too delicate for me. Those super thin limbs would make me very nervous...But goodness do I love looking at owner photos of them. I'm especially obsessed with their centaurs! (The ones with the human feet!)

    22. I would give my left arm for an Ery doll

      • x 1
    23. The Granado Evol body is, IMO, absolutely drool-worthy, but it does look like it would be very hard to dress. That and it seems to be absolutely massive and take too much space.

But you know the idiom "never say never". :)

      • x 1
    24. Hey if any of you haven’t hard of klarna I suggest you check it out :)

    25. Dollzone Sawarieda is absolutely stunning but I think it will probably be hard to find her and even if I could she would be out of my price range. Loong Soul Thunderbull Kui is also basically the same situation; an expensive discontinued doll. They are both also very large and I just don’t know if I would have the space for them.

    26. For me it has to be either popovy or minifee. The ting with popovy is the fact that the price is SOOOO high, and the amount of work and messaging, and discussing, and saving is too much of a hassle. Minifee on the other hand is the popularity and the pedestal that the company is placed upon. I prefer to support smaller companies and separate artists, that will also give me a quality item. The minifee sculpt is nice and pretty, but I can get a good similar product for less from companies like ResinSoul or WithDoll that is more affordable or comes with more things for a similar price.
I know that a lot of people will disagree with my but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    27. I actually agree, I used to be like I can't afford a minifee and I was scared that when I bought off the second hand market people would rip me off and give me a recast because so many of thier dolls have been recasted. After a while seeing how cute they were I figure saving the money is worth it because you only live once so why not get what you really want

    28. Soom Heliot and Granado Enoch.

They are too large for me and it is daunting. I have memories of holding a Sabik at a long ago doll meet (at a Borders oml...) and I remember thinking that it was too much doll for me. But I love looking at pictures of them.

I think once I landed on the 57-62cm size boys and girls I hit my sweet spot and I don't think I'll ever go larger even though there are fantastically beautiful dolls in that large size range.

      EDIT:

I have a running list, sadly:
      • Soom Heliot (65cm+ is too big for me, if he were 62cm...)
      • Granado Enoch (beautiful, expressive, way too big for me)
      • K-doll Kamyu (I already have sleeping dolls I love, also I had a Kayan and a Karon and they didn't stick)
      • Elfdoll Vivien (pop up rarely, super popular, no real plan if I did have one)
      • CP Shiwoo Elf (super limited, pop up rarely, very popular, would be expensive)
      • Volks Sophie (Pink House collab release in 2019 for LA Dolpa, very few of them, expensive)
      • Volks F75 (love him, but again no real plan and the eyes are a little too large for me these days)
      • Volks Okita Souji SD13 version (Don't see him pop up much, expensive, eyes too big)
      • Volks Maximillian (SD17 is too big for me)
      • Peakswoods Rosemii (love her, but she doesn't fit my current collection well)
      • Youpla Shuri (head/eye size is too small for my collection and wouldn't fit well)

    29. anything thats fantasy, cute and elegant and thats way out of my price range

    30. I have a Popovy, and when I first started in the hobby I would agree with you. It wasn't until I started buying larger and more expensive dolls that a Popovy's price suddenly didn't seem that bad lol!

Right now, sculpts that I love but would likely never get are DC Ona, DC Oswald, pretty much most of Loongsoul's fantasy 70cm BJDs, Little Rebel Andre, and Lillycat Ellana. The primary reason is lack of space and funds, and I feel that the amount of dolls I have is already quite a lot. Too many dolls is overwhelming for me. This is partially what inspired me to go for my Popovy - the dream of finally getting one of my dream dolls!

As for buying heads, I have found that hybriding is super stressful. I don't know how people do it - to buy and sell bodies so many times in the hope of finding one that fits their head. So this pretty much rules out a lot of Little Rebel and Switch sculpts for me too.

    31. The dragon tailed 1/6 doll Dragon Po&Chuan from dollzone. The doll is everything I want from a fantasy doll, yet it is a difficult doll in terms of customization. The tail is too big and complicated, painting it would be a nightmare. Also the lower horns place too many restrictions on wig style. I know it's beyond my ability to take good care of it so no, I am not even trying to get one.

    32. I love a lot of the Doll Chateau sculpts but I know I will never get them because there are too many I like and I just can't choose. Also from Luts, a lot of the Delf girls I like but the size and proportions wouldn't match my current slim MSD collection and that would drive me nuts.

    33. Minifee elves/fantasy sculpts just... dat price... would need a 12 month layaway x_x I haven't completely given up on having one some day but if I try to be realistic it's probably not gonna happen

    34. Lillycat Ninon and other similar art dolls. They simply don't fit my crew of bobble-headed, old-school dolls. Other dolls that would fit the aesthetic, like Dollzone Anson and Moment, I don't have the desire to own. I'm content with looking at pictures of them.

    35. Anything MSD sized.
I have SDs, YoSDs and tinies, but for some reason the MSD size just escapes me. The older kid-like sculpts are cute but not as cute as Yos, while the slim mature sculpts are pretty but not as pretty as SDs. Basically they are that in-between thing that doesnt fit with either of my tastes.

      • x 1
    36. Doll Chateau Luna. I absolutely love that doll, but after getting Julianne there is no way I will buy Luna now. I can just see that head with the ears being super heavy on that tiny body and not being able to get her to stand or pose how I want. That is a deal breaker for me. I love my DC Julianne but getting her into the position she is in was hard and I can't play around with her because she frustrates me. Beautiful dolls, but glad I figured it out with a less expensive one.

Also very large dolls. My first real BJD that wasn't like an Evangeline was a Iplehouse Dexter and he was so big and heavy I was afraid to stand him up or do anything with him. He almost slipped out of my hands a few times while I was holding him and it scared me so much I decided to let him go and I cannot see myself ever getting another one of that size again.

    37. Minifee Siean. I keep watching the prices of Siean heads go up and up and I want to kick myself for not buying one when I first discovered BJD's.

    38. Idealian dolls - I like them and enjoy look at photos of them, but they're just too big for me ....

    39. Ail Elijah, or just Alice in Labyrinth and Dollstown dolls in general. I really love them, but I only have my bedroom to keep my dolls in so I've made my decission when it comes to the dolls I own and what companies I buy from.

I have owned an Ail Elijah before and feel very nostalgic about him. But only time will show whether or not I cave in to my nostalgia.

    40. Most of the Doll Chateau catalogue. I think they look absolutely stunning, but i just can't quite picture myself owning one.

    41. I see a lot of 70cm dolls that are stunning, like Aiqing from Dika Doll. But I don't think I could handle dressing a huge doll like that especially masculine sculpts, not so great at dressing them XD

    42. DV Thorn and Vine. I bloody love their promo photos but every time I see owner photos of them I feel dissapointment. They just don't look the same.
Honestly I wish I could just get nice big photo prints of those promo photos more than anything:aeyepop:

    43. Helga by Natalia Loseva as I cannot afford her.

    44. a lot of the bigger soom boys are drop dead gorgeous to me but they are FAR too big so i will forever admire from afar. Also switch dolls are cute but for some reason i dont feel the want for them but they are pretty

    45. I recently discovered the amazing fantasy sculpts from Dream Valley, in particular the Rah Eagle version. I unfortunately missed his preoder period by almost a year since I only got properly into the BJD hobby a few weeks ago.

I absolutely love his talons! I've done some searching but most of the doll bird feet I've seen so far are very stocky, with small and short toes like those of a secretary bird. There is nothing wrong with that but it's not really my style.

His sculpt was the first one I saw with the bird of prey talons and long and slender claws. Combined with the slim digitigrade legs, it is everything I could wish for in a fantasy sculpt with bird legs. If I every could get my hands on one, I'd snap it up immediately, but seeing as it's been discontinued in January, that dream might be a little far fetched.

    46. Hello fellow "I missed Rah Eagle and I'm heartbroken" doll fan!! I missed his preorder period by about a month, and can tell you don't lose hope!!! His talons were also what broke me lol. I asked on the DV discussion threads about suggestions/hopes of getting him specifically and here's what I was told: DV does often bring back the limited sculpts, so it's entirely possible they'll bring him back for a limited event at some point (I'm hoping they do this for their Order/Chaos, who I'm still hoping to nab at some point).

ALSO. And this is how I got my Rah back in August. Oftentimes around the time that they're shipping out their orders, the dealers will have people who back out of preorders etc etc and they'll need to sell the dolls. The dolls will pop up in their in stock pages. I managed to nab an in stock Eagle Rah from BJDivas, but I'd also recommend checking Denver Dolls in stock as they get quite a few DV dolls there as well. Rahs have started shipping to their owners, so now is actually the perfect time to keep an eye out for him!

      Do not lose hope!!

    47. Wow!

First of all, congratulations for managing to get him! He's gorgeous! His pretty toes got you too, huh. I can't blame you; they're very well sculpted indeed.

But thanks so much for the info! It's great to know that I still have a chance of getting him! I'll definitely keep an eye on those websites but if I cannot get him through those sites, it is comforting to know that there is still a possibility of getting him if he gets rereleased.

Fingers crossed I can get him eventually!

    48. Thank you! I am still amazed he's mine, stabby toes of murder and all hehe. I actually had a few people from this forum trying to hunt me down when they saw one up in stock (they remembered I was asking about him), it was so sweet!!

Yeah, keep an eye on the sites and fingies crossed for a re-release. It is entirely possible you can get one of your own, you just gotta have patience. I'll keep my fingies crossed for you as well!

    49. I think it’s funny that the ones I put here awhile back I have now, I wonder if other collectors are the same.

    50. Elfdoll Rainydoll MIR head with molded Auburn Hair. I have Mir with the black molded hair and I have the head to add wigs.

    51. DLace's Machina dolls.

I love the concept, but they are very slow with orders and with that many fiddly parts, I'm sure I will lose or break something in no time! *_*

I said Doll Chateau in Part 1 and that is still holding true! I was very tempted by Noah and Ryan, but never bit the bullet.

I think perhaps that is me with centaurs in general. I love the idea, but it's very hard to engineer a centaur doll that stands well on account horses are an engineering disaster by all accounts lol

The smaller 1/6 scale centaurs stand okay, but I don't like 1/6 scale and the larger centaurs have much more weight/balance issues, especially if I want slender horse legs instead of chibi/chunky pony legs.

I have considered Luts' centaurs too, but I haven't bought one of those yet either. My love and the price don't really match up.

    52. I believe I saw the rag eagle on bjdivas.com instock. He is 2k if your still looking.

    53. Esthy Peroth. I really love him but hard to get one:(

    54. Hi, thanks for helping me!

I've looked and I sadly cannot find him on BJDivas. I think he's already been sold. The only other similar doll I could find was a Story of Seventh Day Horus.

But I appreciate it a lot that you attempted to help me out!

    55. Mine would be Alice in Labyrinth Elijah. His little teeth are so cute, but I can't justify getting another 1/3 resin boy. I already have 3+ and nowhere to put them. :frownyblush:

    56. Luts Grand Senior Delfs like Abadon and Neptune consistently blow me away in owner photos but they don't resemble any of the characters I'd like to have in doll form. I also have a soft spot for Dream Valley's fantasy/monster sculpts and DLace Raphael just because of the wings.

    57. Any dolls with mech or armour parts - like Souldoll's "Souloid" series, and Luts' "Untold Story" series. Fantasy parts (hooves, horns) really don't interest me but I absolutely adore mech and armour parts. But I like doing all kinds of photography with my dolls, and mech parts seem less versatile in terms of photoshoot ideas. So I think that a mech doll will either be displayed just as eye candy, or it'll end up wearing human parts a lot more. Also, mech dolls tend to be mini and smaller (I only have 1/3 sized dolls), and don't really fit in with the aesthetic and theme of the rest of my crew,. I once had a Batchix mini Machina and she was adorable, but I sold her because I couldn't see her fitting with my other crew.

I don't know, I might be persuaded - if the right 1/3 parts come out and aren't too intrusive (eg. masks, mech arm, etc), or I can make a space in my crew's imaginary world for a mech. But right now I'll just enjoy those parts in photos.

In other dolls... the Dollshe guys. Always had an eye for Bermann and Hound (back when they cost a fortune, especially Bermann), and now Arsene and Aramis. They're just so tall and I don't think they'll fit my crew either. But again, who knows... I might convince myself that 70cm isn't much of a jump from 60-65cm and dive in anyway.

    58. Unless Volks offers a re-release, I don't anticipate purchasing a Volks SwD Williams 2nd hand due to the exorbitant after market price. However, if he's offered again OR I magically were to win a One-Off... I will certainly still try to acquire him.

Other dolls that I really love, but will never get are the old discontinued CP Delfs. I've owned my fair share of them over the years and for some reason I never seem to 'click' with them. I love and admire them in other people's hands... but they never seem to stick around in my collection. So although sometimes they come up for sale 2nd hand, and I'm gravely tempted, I think I've accepted that they are "admire from afar" dolls.

    59. Doll chateau sculpts. Its beautiful to look at, but also somehow haunting as well. It also looks so fragile that I would be scared to touch it.

    60. For me, it would be Dollshe's Natalie Portman & Monica Bellucci. With all the issues with Dollshe has had in the recent years with many people waiting close to 5 years to get their dolls and the rumors circulating that Mr. Dollshe is considering closing down his doll studio to focus on other business endeavors. It's so sad, his sculpts are very pretty and Mr. Dollshe has killed any goodwill within the bjd community.
