SartoriaJ Mini Part II

Aug 19, 2023

    1. Same, Galdren's dragon face looks more appealing to me too - he turns into a really hot dragon! But his tiny chick.. i mean dragon feet look a bit funny:sweat imho, they should have gone all the way like loong soul and made feet more dragony or not at all, just kept human feet and slaped some shiny scales on them.

      • x 2
    2. I think Mive’s dragon face has a few differences but they’re so minuscule you need a microscope to see them. Her cheeks look thinner/sharper (you can see it on the 3/4 profile comparisons), her eyes are narrower and brow marginally lower and more pronounced. I could be totally wrong, I could have been looking so hard I convinced myself but to me she appears to be more defined and expressive. I find human Mive rather vapid and insipid.

I agree with everyone’s comments about how they could have added a tail and designed more reptilian feet. I’m guessing though that they’re so used to dealing with sculpting beautiful humans that they struggled coming up with a foot design that was stable and delicate. Probably for the tail too. It maybe just got too complicated so they cut their losses. I do love how they’ve given us a glimpse into the development too including some of the problems.

The reveal kind of gave me the same feeling that I got playing FFXIV (Final Fantasy XIV online) when the dragon race Au Ra were finally introduced. They had a teaser in the form of a character who had horns and a scaled tail but kept her face and limbs hidden under clothing. I imagined all sorts of exciting things regarding her appearance but was incredibly disappointed to find that essentially the Au Ra were very human looking. They had scaled patches on the face, arms and legs, a tail, horns and eyes with noticeable limbal rings and that was it.

The butt wings are also a very common thing in Asia, again as an avid gamer I see that style a lot both on characters and on costumes. It’s odd looking to us Western folk especially from the UK and Europe where our dragons of lore are usually big and bulky with massive wings.

I do love the colour combination they came up with, the purple on a warm brown base is incredibly beautiful.

      • x 5
    3. If Mive tries to fly with those wings, she would probably fall flat on her face ;)

But overall she still looks impressive, even if it is not very practical ^^

      • x 3
    4. They overdid the sparkles and blushing on Mive's faceup imo, and I honestly think she would benefit from a bolder colour palette streamlined to make her features actually pop instead. But alas, this all goes back to my general critique of SJ struggling to bring out the potential of darker resins like cocoa brown... makeup, styling, and ethnic-wise -- though I understand they are treating cocoa brown like a fantasy colour this time around.

I agree with everyone saying Galdren's dragon sculpt is far better than his human sculpt -- the sexy incubus vibe is strong on this lol -- and I think his styling works great for showcasing both the beauty of the David body and his dragon arms. Given his wings are on his upper back, he has a greater dragon-like presence than Mive. And of course, a dragon's tail would have been perfect. Now I just can't tell if I love or hate the poofy mullet.

      • x 3
    5. Something about Galdren's fluffy hair and all the glitter is giving me some Twilight Harpo vibes lol.
@sageyufi omg a more dark and bold makeup would be so perfect!

I kind of wish there was an option to get the dragon heads with human bodies, or to add human legs to the dragon sets. Honestly the price surprised me with how low it is with all the special dragon parts....but I think I'd rather get them faceups as incubi and succubi and skip the dragon feet all together, or at least have the option to switch them out.
I think perhaps I've bought enough new dolls this year anyway... Heres to hoping for an amazing gal next year so I can buy the athletic body!

    6. The sales is only going up to the middle of December. Something tells me there's still a Part 3 to come :chomp:

    7. …or she’d be bent double like a cat that trying to resist being picked up!
That mental image then became Heimlich the caterpillar from ‘A Bug’s Life’ when he emerges from his cocoon with teeny tiny wings and announces “I’m a beautiful butterfly!”.

Mive: *changes* ….. *looks at butt wings and squeals*…”I’m a delectable dragon!”
      Everybody: “Oooh”
Mive: *wiggles butt and flaps wings* “Watch me soar majestically”
      Everyone: *cheers*
Mive: “I am one with the sky!”…….*wings flap desperately as she takes off looking like a limp croissant*
      Everyone: :nowords:

    8. Mive's buttwings are giving me early 2000s Mary Sue tests.

    9. I don't think I posted a photo of my MSD Elf Leo here yet. I have to say the SD version and the MSD version are one of the most identical as I've seen SJ do. Great faceups on both sizes!:XD:

    10. Ooh he has such a lovely face, quite gentle but there’s a slight hint that he could be a bit of a rogue too!

Well I’ve at last become a SartoriaJ owner, I adopted @sakana_hime’s elf ‘Jade’.

    14. @Ashemanu - He looks great! Nick or Ian...whoever he may be. I think this is the first owner photo I've seen of a Matthew! He's lovely!<3

    16. @skyealloway Thank you! I could imagine that for him!
@luluna Thanks! Guess he wasn´t one of the popular boys ;) But I really like him, even if he was a buy mostly out of frustration at the time ^^
@morganatron Thanks!! He certainly has some bad boy vibes :D

      • x 3
    17. I say let him be a Nick, if he wants to be a Nick.
But, Now, I'm curious if it's the hair or something that's making him a Nick. (Hopefully it's not his face shape that's making him a Nick. Did you know that's a thing, in real life, about misremembering names?)

      • x 1
    18. @tinyflame No, it´s the overall look, the face, the black hair, the almost beard ... he reminds me of at least two detectives named Nick from crime novels I read, and of the main character of the show "Grimm" who also is named Nick. And I don´t even like the name ^^ Or the two detectives!
And no, I didn´t know about the correlation of face shape and misremembered names! Interesting to know

    24. Gorgeous! Dolls, outfits and setting!

    25. Thanks! I thought these two deserved a special portrait series taken with candles, and the Christmas tree in the background.

It's taken me a bit to get used to him, as he's so ultra realistic, yet looks different from every angle. He seemed a bit 'squat', maybe because he's on the David body. His neck also seemed short, so I ended up inserting some thick leather in his neck joint, and that helped.

I do like the David body. The arms hold a pose so much better than the ATH body. He doesn't even need wiring to hold Sarah in his arms.

    27. They do deserve portraits with te seasoal decorations! I like realistic dolls but I have several David bodies here and on order and I will remember your neck length solution!

    31. @Patrice S Love your Ayla! She looks so different from the promo pictures, to me at least. They make a beautiful pair :) And Happy New Year to all :)

    34. @luluna Thank you! She truly is :) I just wish there were more clothes for the SartoriaJ girls, big and small. I am in dire need of underwear atm, and all other things :...(

      • x 2
    35. She's gorgeous!!! I believe the underwear for Iplehouse FID fit the Sartoriaj MSD girls, as it's stretchy - I just checked the website and it looks like it's on sale too! Hope that helps!!!

      • x 2
    36. @morganatron Thanks for the tip! I just looked at it. Unfortunately shipping would be far too expensive for a set of underwear :sigh That´s almost always the problem with the big companies.

      • x 1
    37. Ah yes, that’s always a problem. Worth adding it if you’re buying a doll, not otherwise! I’m annoyed I missed out on a lot of their wigs for that reason - they seem to be phasing them out, unfortunately.

    38. I really love Bella's sculpt. Her rounder face shape is really charming among the crowd of narrow-faced sculpts. She seems very kind and motherly in the best way possible in my opinion.

    39. @Patrice S Thanks! Your girl is lovely too, that dress looks stunning on her. I like it better than on the promo pictures. The color really suits her!

    40. Bella reminds me of someone but I can't quite place who. She is like a quiet beauty. Congrats to you both!

      • x 2
    41. Thanks so much. I keep thinking she reminds me of someone too but it just eludes me. She was one of those that as soon as I saw her I had to order her and she did not disappoint.

      • x 1
    42. She reminds me of Bella Hadid, a little bit softer. That would also explain the name of the mold ;)

    43. Your Bella is beautiful. I had the same experience. I knew I hAD to have her the moment I saw her promo photos, and she definitely did not disappoint. For me what clinched it was that she reminded me so much of my beautiful SD Elfdoll Hazy, who just lingers in the display case, and hasn't been out in over a decade, since I find the SD size way too big to deal with. I'm so happy that SJ offers their gorgeous sculpts in the MSD size.

I need to make her a wig, but have been too busy since she arrived, so she's currently just wearing the best one of my 5/6 wigs that were available.

    44. Bella is just beautiful! I love the outfits on both.

    45. Thank you MB Lilac. Bella is really a gorgeous one. Yours is beautiful too and I can see the Hazy resemblance. The brown eyes look lovely in her and the costume you did for her is incredible. I tried those Galaxy Brown eyes in mine and she didn’t like them. Go figure.

Thanks Bobble. I’m really glad I ordered the costume with her.

    46. I'm drawn to these gorgeous dolls with their realism but SartoriaJ's sales model confuses me. Especially since I'm a newbie. I'm so disappointed that I missed out on The First Emperor, I would have loved to order Andre, maybe Eliott or Colette too. It was frustrating that I can't order anything at the moment, other than the SD Shakespeare dolls, which I won't because I'm sticking with the MSD size. Do I hold on and wait to see what is announced in future months? Are sculpts reused or does that tend to be for certain popular ones? I'll be sad if I've missed out on Andre for good.

    47. At present you can only purchase what it available each month. However, SJ often brings back sculpts in new designs and outfits. :)

Sometimes, you can find past offerings in the MP.

      • x 4
    48. Yes, their sales model is very frustrating. They used to offer a series of 'basic' dolls all the time, in both SD and MSD size, and then introduce new sculpts from time to time, which were sometimes added to their basic line, and sometimes just available for a limited sales period. Like, they might have a special sale where ALL their elves would be available. But their dolls are so beautiful, and became so popular that the wait times were becoming ridiculous, so they started retiring sculpts so there were less and less available all the time. Then - I think it was two years ago - they stopped offering a basic line altogether. Now they just offer a few dolls each month for a very limited time - usually in some kind of theme, and for less than two weeks. Sometimes the dolls are brand new sculpts, and other times they are older sculpts with new makeup and outfits. Usually the monthly dolls are available in both sizes, although the outfits are only available in the SD size. However these last two Shakespearean characters are only available in SD size.

Unfortunately there is no way to order older sculpts unless they rerelease them in a newly reworked version for one of their themes, and there's no way to know if a sculpt you really love will be released again, or when. So, the pressure is on to order a doll during the short sales period, or risk never be able to get it again. But who has the funds for that?

It's very frustrating, with such a limited offering, and not knowing who will be released next - or soon. Back when they offered Derek only in the SD size, I fell in love, and thought I'd definitely want to get him if they ever offered him in MSD size. Then last year when they offered their Napoleonic series, I fell for Elliot, and ordered him in MSD size. Then the very next month they offered Derek in MSD size. Just the guy I'd been waiting for! But with our low Canadian dollar there's no way I can afford two dolls so soon after each other. If I'd known Derek would be released the very next month, I'd have waited for him instead. Yes, extremely frustrating.

So yes, there is always a chance they might release Andre again in some form, but there's no way to know if or when. You could always ask them.

    49. @WAKelly honestly, I feel like SartoriaJ has new releases so often that I bet you won't have to wait long for the perfect doll. Since it was an SD this month, I feel like there is a high chance for MSD next month!

    50. Thanks! I'll hang in there and be patient, or at least try to be patient. Sometimes I'm not very good with that and I know I have to be withh bjd dolls. I ordered my first two from Raccoon Doll 2/13 and I'm excited to sew for them though it's going to be a while until I see them. I'll keep my eye out for any msd doll releases from SartoriaJ too. I think I have a little more room in my doll budget if I don't go crazy. While I wait I'll continue to enjoy all of your beautiful photos.

    51. It was 2022 when they had their big discontinuation event and stopped having dolls available all the time.

My Jude is from that event and his twin is from the elf event immediately afterward, which was I think the last time Elf Jude was ever offered.

    52. I didn't realize it was that long ago already. Time sure flies.

    53. I had to check, because it doesn't feel like it was that long ago, but it was. I still kind of regret not getting elf Juliet while she was available but I couldn't swing both of them and I wanted Jude more.

    54. I felt the same way about Derek so when the released a MSD version of him I grabbed him in spite of having ordered both Louis and Elliot. I don’t regret it even though it set me back a bit.

And sometimes they will bring a sculpt back pretty quickly like the Halloween Louis and Vanessa and the ATH Marina. So keep watching their monthly offerings and it doesn’t hurt to ask Jay about Andre. Here’s my Derek whom I don’t regret getting.

    55. He's so handsome, Patrice. I have been gushing over everyone's beautiful photos. Wow these are incredible dolls. I'm attempting to put the waiting time to good use. I've started to sell more of the non-bjd dolls I've lost interest in. I'm going to be strict with myself and unless it's a doll I adore, instead of a "nice to have" it's going up for sale for someone else to enjoy. That should help my doll budget quite a bit. So in the upcoming months perhaps there will be a couple of dolls that I will want to click that order button.
