Hello! I have been collecting BJDs for 10 years now, and some of my dolls need restringing badly - they can no longer pose and are like rag dolls! I am not at all skilled in this area and am hoping to hire someone to restring several of my dolls. In addition, many of them have yellowed and could do with some sanding to restore them to their original color. Does anyone know if there are restringing/de-yellowing services offered in Southern California? I am in Orange County but am willing to drive a few hours. Alternatively, I could mail my dolls to another region/state... I realize it would be super expensive but would really like to complete this project and think it would be worth it since these dolls mean so much to me. Any information would be much appreciated - many thanks! EDIT - thanks for the suggestions! On second thought, I will probably not have anyone sand away the yellowing due to all the time/energy/etc. But I would still like to send the dolls to someone else to restring. So suggestions for restringing services (ideally in SoCal) are still welcome. Thanks!
I know you're lookign to hire someone to do the work, but had you thought of trying a Polident (denture cleaner) bath to help lessen the yellowing, rather than the more intricate job of sanding? I had some success with doing this last year on a couple of old Luts Delf bodies. It didn't restore the original colour, of course, as part of the yelllowing uis due to the red tones having faded, but it toned down the yellowness considerably and might lower the cost of revamping your collection if you don't have to pay for sanding: Teddy
Sanding even one doll all over is a horrible task. It takes forever, is physically exhausting, and it is very likely there will be spots you won't be able to reach...which means you will have areas with darker spots. There's a reason it's not something people usually offer. I did it once on one of my dolls and never again. Some colors cannot be returned to with sanding as well. If pigment has broken down, it isn't there anymore to return to. Also, sanding does reduce details. Be aware that your doll will most likely lose some sculpting depth, especially when the head should be sanded too. The best you can probably do is properly clean them all first. Then, depending on their skintone, you can search for the right "freshening up" method. In some cases re-dyeing them helps more than sanding or chemical treatment could. Stringing is, unless you're physically impaired, not difficult. It appears a lot more scary than it truly is. Just give it a try, before you spend potentially hundreds on shipping out dolls for maintenance
If you haven’t already, get a stringing tool and maybe some forceps/hemostats. They make stringing exponentially easier especially if you get a stringing hook that either has a horizontal handle or a hole where you can insert a stick. I’m not particularly strong and have hand/wrist problems but I was able to string my 75 cm guy thanks to a hook
Here is the link to the polident soak others mentioned: /threads/safe-easy-resin-color-refresher.847116/ As far as stringing goes, if you can't find a hook from Volks USA or somewhere it will arrive to you in a timely manner you can also use a thin piece of ribbon. That way you can thread it through all the channels and just pull to the hooks or other type of foot/hand connectors your doll may have. There are a lot of video tutorials on YouTube with various methods. I was terrified the first time I did it and then was cross with myself for how anxious I'd gotten for no reason after it was done.
I was very intimidated by the idea of restringing prior to getting my first doll. And then he came, and to my horror I discovered that Impldoll had started shipping their bigger dolls with the bottom half of their legs separate to save on costs. They included instructions, a metal caribener, some plastic ones, and two lengths of plastic coated wire (the basics I would need to get those legs on myself). I was horrified to realize that my first interaction with a BJD was going to be getting him put together all by myself xD Much cursing and use of feet later (I needed an extra set of hands to get his second leg on, but was by myself lol) my boy was together. And I'm actually grateful to Impldoll, cause I'm confident that when I have to do restringing for real I know I can do it. It was like pulling a bandaid off lol. I would very much recommend not using the wire though. Some ribbons or one of the restringing tools would have made a world of difference. My hands were not happy with how hard I had to pull that wire with the tension required for a 73cm body. I do plan on getting one of those restringing tools with a wooden cross-handle next time I have to do something of the sort, those seem like the best option to me.
