Contest Photography: Tableau Vivant! ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Jul 29, 2013

1. So many beautiful, clever and creative pics and ideas on this thread! Of all the anniversary games and contests, this is the one I'd most like to participate in... Will doubtless be on the last minute (as in life, so on the forum!), but do have a painting in mind, if I can just figure out how to do a backdrop and get my hands on a prop or two!

2. This is such a great contest...all the entries are lovely! I'm hoping to get a chance now that the time is extended I have so many great ideas just trying to narrow it down.

3. I think I've finally decided which painting I want to use for my inspiration, so I'll be taking my photo tomorrow I hope! Perhaps thisafternoon...we shall see. I've had such a crazy busy week - GISHWHES ended over the weekend, we had my step-father-in-law staying for a couple of days, and I've got a big party/event coming up all weekend (which I'm making myself a new dress for), as well as practice for an upcoming performance - GAH! And then there are all the amazing DoA anniversary challenges, which I am kind of attempting to enter most of...because I'm clever like that...XD

At any rate, this has been such fun, and everyone has such amazing entries! I can't wait to get mine taken hehe

4. Well, I cannot possibly let this year's anniversary pass without participating in at least one challenge :). So I will be gladly joining you all soon.

5. It's been so fun watching everyone's entries come in. ^_^ So many beautiful pictures and ideas...

6. I'm so glad about the extended deadline and that I can repeat a photo already done in here! The idea I had just popped into my mind when I heard about this... then someone else used the same painting. But no worries! :)

7. *happy squees* I managed to make my entry work :D And here it is! This is the artwork I referenced: http://www.artrenewal.org/artwork/492/492/7956/cupids_folly-large.jpg

And this is my image:

I spent $1.60 on this challenge - well, I bought a metre of ribbon for $1.60, and used...about 8cm of it for the sash, so I spent... >.< I don't math well haha. Like 16c or just under that! Other than that, the fabric is a scrap from my stash with some elastic for shaping, the wigs were in my stash, and the wings and quiver were just paper and tape :)

This is a miracle of balance haha - Hope, my pukifee did NOT want to sit atop Erynn, and Erynn in turn has funny elbows which have a tendency to collapse whenever they feel like it XD

8. I'm so looking forward to this one. I've been working on my props, but I was super sick for a solid four days, including the weekend, so I'm waaaay behind. I hope to catch up tonight and then tomorrow. I feel so rushed all of a sudden!

9. My image stars Iplehouse Leona and is based on Dolce far Niente by the preraphaelite painter, John William Godward.

I spent about $3 on the orange scarf and $4 on the sheepskin rug. I already owned the backdrop.

10. I don't think I'll be able to enter this contest, unfortunately >w< Just can't seem to come up with anything I'd be happy with. But good luck to all the participants, it always blows my mind how many creative and talented people we have on DoA!

American Gothic
by Grant Wood

Original:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...od_-_American_Gothic_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

Construction:
On the lady: I sewed the white collar and the brown over dress with trim. (I already owned the black dress, trim and white fabric. Bought the brown fabric for roughly $1.50) I bought the cameo as part of a charm and took out the center (roughly a $1).
On the gentleman: I created the glasses from wire I had around the house. I sewed the shirt and drew the green lines on with pencils. I made the overalls from some old jeans and I already owned the jacket. I created the pitchfork with part of a wooden rod (bought for $0.99) and created the fork portion from yet more wire from around the house.
Background: I found a photo of the original house which was used in this painting and printed it out at the print shop as I needed it larger than my home printer could allow ($5).

I had a wonderful time both constructing and deconstructing for this project. ^_^

12. My image can be found in the first URL as my entry contains nudity. I always liked Degas' paintings and I thought I'd have some fun with this. He sure did like painting ballerinas and this girl must have been one too the way her body is positioned. :)

My version of Woman in the Bath by Degas

Wikipedia Image of the Original

All items in the shoot were items I already owned. I did edit the color slightly in the picture to have a touch of a less red hue.

13. [IMG]

This contest is wonderful, so thank you for allowing everyone to participate! :aheartbea

I've always loved gloomy looking things, like my Volks Mark, so I just fell in love with this painting when I saw it at the Guggenheim in New York.
"Fernande with a Black Mantilla" by Pablo Picasso.

I'm no artist, but I tried my best to paint the background and some of the mantilla. I had everything on hand, except for the black board and blue flowers which only came out to $5.

14. I have so many paintings I'd like to recreate and I just can't decide XD
But I will make mine today, maybe I will just take different photos and see which one I like best.

One question, how gruesome are the photos allowed to be?
Would something like this be too much already?

15. FINALLY came up with an idea.... now to pull it off :)

16. According to the countdown clock, I have till tomorrow night, and I think I will be working on it up till then! :) Fortunately I'm feeling better, now.

17. I think BJDs make the perfect stand ins for John the Baptist! ;) Who doesn't have a few floating heads?

18. That version of American Gothic is just priceless!!! :D

Everyone is doing such a lovely job! Not sure if I'll have time to do this, but I just LOVE seeing all the great entries!!!

19. Okay wow this was tougher than I expected LOL Probably cause my boy did NOT want to stand for me. Took some brainstorming but I got around it. Anywho, I was worried this might be too minimal but the statue of David is perhaps one of my all time FAVORITE master pieces. My submission doesn't nearly reflect the male beauty and perfection that is the statue of David but I am happy with my efforts none the less. To clarify, the statue is holding a sling, the one David used to strike down Goliath. I didn't have a sling so I used something else that resembled a sling. I used photoshop to edit out my hand and to play around with the colors and erase blemishes. Anywho, good luck to everyone :)

20. lol...I was soo just looking at this painting thinking how I could do it...what a wonderful job, I'm narrowing down my options that will take little construction as I don't have the time at the moment. Loving all the entries coming in!

21. Oh I'm in awe of all your entries!! I am dying to try this, I have two in mind and I need to see if I have time (in between two wedding showers this weekend *blegh* - and they're both for the same person lol) to throw one together!!

22. Nude Kitty Descending a Staircase, No. 1 ---------------------------- Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 by Marcel Duchamp
[IMG] [IMG]

This painting truly represents the concept of "deconstruction, reconstruction" as Duchamp deconstructs the body into separate shapes, then reconstructs the shapes into the body in movement.
My nude is represented by Elfdoll white Catsys. I didn't have to purchase anything for this photo.

23. This was a really fun contest idea. I had a great time putting this together!!! Everyone has been so creative and I have been wowed by all the entries :aheartbea

The Last Supper has been one of the most talked about and speculated paintings (I'd say next to the Mona Lisa) out there. There have been several recreations of the painting as well; from Legos, Simpsons, to Star Wars. I though it would provide a great opportunity to use my Tokyo Assault boys and go with a mafia themed recreation.

MAFIA RECREATION:

ORIGINAL LAST SUPPER:

I only had to buy a can of spray paint for $3.79, everything else I had or borrowed (that included some of the dolls). I already had a huge piece of cardboard and just sprayed and painted the background.

24. Jesus Christ.
It took me a WHOLE day to take my photo.
It first started with a list of art pieces I'd like to recreate...and it was a long list.
So I first skipped all the ones that were already made by others, then the ones that would be just way too hard without heavy use of Photoshop (Guernica *shakes fist*) or would cost way more than 30$.
I then had a short list of art pieces that seemed possible, only that the first two didn't want AT ALL (including the Caravaggio painting of John the Baptist :() and I was left with something that seemed easy, but turned out to be way harder than expected.

So, here's my entry.
Death of Marat (La Mort de Marat or Marat Assassiné) by Jacques-Louis David, 1793
Original: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/aa/Death_of_Marat_by_David.jpg

Stuff I used for this photo:
- a flower pot table
- a green scarf
- bed sheet
- Nine9Style scarf (for turban)
- brown fur wig
- feathers
- paper (white and black)
- several boxes
- print of the original background
- acrylic paint
- 5 lamps + reflector
I made all the props myself according to the original painting, except for the ink glass...that's the cap of a bottle of liquid mint XD
Except for the print of the background I had everything at home already, which made the whole photo rather cheap.
I had tried to emulate the background by myself, but that was pretty much impossible. So I just printed it out in a copy shop and splashed a bit more color on it...since the piece was actually too small cropped before printing I had to cut the most important part out and glue it onto black paper.
in the end it was barely visible on the photo and I had to edit that one a bit to make it visible again. I hope that's okay :C

Taken with Canon 5D II and 100mm 2.8 L lens, Editing was mostly done in Lightroom 5.

I'm a bit sad that the draping of the fabric didn't work out at all, and that the "blood" (red paper) is barely visible at the back side. Not to mention the really bad print of the background, but I tried my best OTL
This definitely showed me how much I need Photoshop, with it I would have finished this waaaaay quicker, now I had to "finish" everything already before actually taking the picture.

25. Gustav Klimt has always been my all time favorite artist, all the colors mixed in his art was always inspiring to me when I was in design school for fashion. I original thought about doing The Kiss, but since someone else already did it..I choose my other favorite "The Virgin"

Original Art:

My interpretation:

I didn't really spend any money I just grabbed a bunch of different shirts/scarves I had that had floral and other designs on. Pulled out some flowers from my stash, and of course 6 of my resin girls to do some posing. Very basic cropping to try and get the image the size of the original. I love this so much I want to keep my dollies in this pile..lol.

26. Wow! Such fantastic entries!!! So much fun to see! :thumbup

27. I am humbled and amazed by the quality of entries in this thread! Bravo, everybody!

Here is my own entry, inspired by Ghost Girl by sculptor Kevin Francis Gray.

_MG_8522 by funnylori, on Flickr

I had considered a few different ideas, but this statue has resonated with me since the first time I saw photos of it on Tumblr. Something about the vulnerability of the girl with her veiled skull face and prominent scars spoke to me. Whether the veil represents tears or a shield, how the girl seems to be purposefully hiding her scars while seeming to step forward articulated to me an allegory of Us, as a community. We as BJD collectors share sensitive parts of ourselves while simultaneously shielding and hiding others. It can sometimes feel hard to come away unscathed.

I recreated the statue by placing my JungaToy D.Skull on my WS Volks body, dressing it in items I already had that looked similar (Dollheart Evo Fer, Dale Rae shoes, Volks Emma coat), and I styled a Luts wig into the ponytail shape of the sculpture. The beaded veil in my case wasn't actually beaded since I am on both a time constraint and budget. Instead I used left over fishing line from a previous year's contest. I hot glued the fishing line to a strip of white ribbon, and poured boiling water over the line to straighten it. (Did you know some fishing line has lead in it? I hope I washed enough and didn't breathe too much steam when I tried to straighten it!) The ribbon was tied around the head and supported to the wig using bobby pins, which I then covered with a wide scrap of white fabric to create the headband. The pedestal is an upturned Ikea storage container borrowed from the kitchen and a doll stand borrowed from my Moment. Photographed in my bedroom mirror, the backgrounds are picture matte boards that I'm working on painting for somebody else (aka, borrowed). I did not spend any new money to create this photo. It was actually rather difficult to photograph the entire doll to give a sense of the sculpture while showing the completeness.

28. Leda and the swan after Peter Paul Rubens

Leda and the swan by Hasel-Anne, on Flickr

Original: http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Mythology/RM/LedaSwanRubens.jpg

I have always loved depictions of Leda and Zeus in swan form, the story is exiting and thrilling and weird and disturbing at the same time. When I saw Rubens Leda for the first time last year I was impressed by how gentle and loving it looked.

Leda is an or-doll Heye head on a Volks sd 10 body with 1 Peapod ballet foot. Aesthetics are all by me. No PS was used, aged effect is created by holding a veil over my lens.

29. Wow, the entries are really stunning guys! I hope more people enter so I can see the awesome things they have done! Sadly I couldn't get my idea to work so I will just have to what and see what other people have done. Which is still pretty fun!

30. My submission is Venus by Velazquez :)

Cost: 0$, as I had all these scraps of clothing laying around. Photoediting was basically changing color/saturation to let the colors appear more... well, artificial and painterly.

31. okay it's another Klimt but I couldn't resist entering
costs $0 I had everything but the background which I made with stuff I had at home
(outfit etc was made by me on an earlier occasion)
doll: volks sd16 cristal

original:

my version:

materials: paper, paint for the background (lol)
dress: metal plate, gold colored rings and chains, nailpolish (which gives the enamel effect) silk.
and underneath is (barely visible) a leather bodystocking covered in metalfoil (gold colored but not real gold leaf, since my wallet didn't like the real thing)

32. This is my rendition of Whistler's Mother by James McNeill Whistler.
I cost me nothing as I already had the things I needed.
Chair and footstool are made from lego, the backdrop is foam board material with printed pictures stuck on with bluetac lol. I already had the dress and I used fur for the flooring.
I used a high iso setting to give it a lot of noise so it would look more like the painting.

33. I liked the surreal work of Agnes Boulloche: http://intpicture.com/xudozhnica-agnes-boulloche/?qcAC=1&pid=7068&pin=1&gin=1&page-album=1#gpin1
For inspiration, I used this picture here is:

To create acomposition: I sewed two cap and draw drawing figure with colored pencils.Finding a suitable book (I rummage the entire family library). I do not drink alcohol, but I collect beautiful bottles and have old wineglasses))). I bought a tube of suitable (~ $ 1) wrapped it with foil and drawing label. As well draw the label on the bottle and inscriptions in Notepad. "Wine" in wineglass made of rag burgundy organza and foil:).

34. I chose Biblis by William Adolphe Bouguereau.

The original: http://www.bouguereau.org/Biblis.html

My photo: [IMG]

I used a Nikon D80 camera with a Holga low-fidelity lens and an antique Cokin sepia filter.
It cost $0 to make, as most of it involved nature, and she already had a suitable wig. (Though the darn thing kept falling into the pond!!)

I really like this painting, I actually have a large print of it on order for my bathroom, haha.
I like how it has a 'back to nature with just the basics' feel to it. :)

35. Fantastic work, everyone! These all just make me smile!!! So creative and fun! :thumbup

36. Fabulous pictures all!
My chosen painting is by Hieronymus Bosch - Tondal's Vision - starring a multitude of tinies!

The original can be seen here: http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/painting_68272/Hieronymous-Bosch/Tondal's-Vision

And this is my recreation - it does feature some doll nudity, but of the tiny people (nothing much to see!) kind, so I have included my photo. But I've added the link below in case anyone finds it offensive, for ease of editing the post:

link here: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7389/9586155298_4b1e8ed35a_c.jpg

In terms of cost of making it - I had much of the craft stuff (materials etc) already, and there's a fair bit of recycling (cat food boxes, postage wrapping), though I did have to buy the big bit of background card, and some black and white card, and some double sided tape. For the props - these are almost all from my dollhouses, but I did have to buy the ping pong ball, one of the mini owls, and the ewok at the back! So total cost about £12.

In terms of shooting - this took a long time to stage and showed me how much I love Photoshop! The only editing is a bit of cropping. The colour comes from a sunset filter over the camera lens. This was great fun to do, but I will be reverting to Photoshop asap! :)

37. Ok here's my attempt.

I used a favorite of mine that may not be so famous...but it's in my local museum and I have a print hanging in my apt. I also have a Jungatoy Skull lol so I had to give this a try. Here is my Switch Taeho as St. Francis in St. Francis Contemplating a Skull.

I spent $5 on material for the robe, which I tea-dyed....everything else I had (including a doll that has facial hair meh heh heh).

Link to original

38. i soooo loooove the last supper picture AmoraSeth... so much so that I absolutely must beg you to send me a high res jpeg of it!! I want to hang it in my studio... what a brilliant conversation piece!!!!

39. Here's my entry!

I've always been a huge fan of Alphonse Mucha and his gorgeous and elaborate paintings. I think the general feel and aesthetic of a lot of my dolls come from my love of his romantic style, so I could not pass up the opportunity to repilcate one of his pieces.

My entry:

I chose one half of his double-panelled pieces called simply "Feather" (the other half is 'Primrose') because I loved it's soft colors, feeling of peaceful calm and because I liked the profile-view of the portrait. I tend not to take a lot of profile-views of my dolls, and thought this particular piece a challenge to my skills.

I spent no money on this project - I already had the dress (I made it months ago for that particular doll!), I made the jewellery and adornments from beads, chain and findings I already had, I re-styled a wig I had that had been sitting around unused (but now I think it'll be getting a lot of use!), the feather is just a craft feather and the leaves are off a branch from my backyard. However, what I'm most proud of (although the camera didn't pick up all the details) is the hand-drawn and painted background I made specifically for this shoot. I drew 'Feather's' background out by hand on a large sheet of watercolor paper in pencil, and spent the better part of 5 hours painting it with watercolors. I wanted to use watercolors for the softly textured, romantic and antique-like feel they give, as I felt it would better suit the mood and look of the piece.

The photo was taken in my husbands 'man cave' (his woodworking studio) because it has amazing light with a simple point-and-shoot on a tripod. :)

This was an awesome contest, and I'm so glad I was able to enter! Everyone has such great submissions!

40. Elzaim; I'm a fan of his too, I can't believe I didn't think of this. xD

Your picture turned out beautiful by the way!
I might kidnap this idea. Lol

41. I am blown away by everyone's amazing work.

42. ok here goes......

I am a HUGE fan of sculpture (go figure...) When my husband and I traveled Europe I always found myself moved to tears at the sight of these massive stone statues and the infinite detail that was a life's work for the artist.... The Venus De Milo is one of my sincerest favorites and thus I used my CH Choa to replicate her as best I could :) Getting the fabric to fall was almost impossible and I gave up and walked way yesterday. The wig gave me extreme curry untill I went out and bought some fringe pins for $3. My kids loved watching me take the photos, despite being so young when we were traveling they remember mummy crying at every statue in the Louvre, and St Pauls Cathedral... etc etc... I guess you could say I "deconstructed" Choa LOL removing her arms and hands for the first time since she was blushed a few years ago ;)

Editing done was to remove a couple of pins used to hold the fabric in place, a safety pin in the empty bicept socket and to the alter the warmth of the colours. I must say congratulations to everyone who has submitted I am so very impressed with the caliber of talent we are surrounded by on DoA.

43. <3 I am just in love with this contest. Everyone's entries are stunning. I keep going back to look through them all (and see the latest entries!) and each time it makes me smile. :)

44. Finally finished! Ten minutes to spare. :)
I have always loved the painting "The Accolade" by Edmund Blair Leighton. It represents purity, beauty, service, love, and the ideals we aspire to reach. It has hung in my home (reproduction) for the last ten years. Here is the original.
And here is my loving recreation.

Total cost was about $10. Spray paint and trim. Everything else I made from things lying around the house. A true labor of love. I've always wanted my own Accolade dress, so this will have to do, for now...

45. Amazing entries, everyone! The moderators will vote this week and we'll announce the winner on August 31st!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :D

47. Oh.
My.
God.

I just stayed awake because I was SO curious to find out who has won and nearly screamed awake the whole house (it's nearly 3am here in my timezone) when I checked the thread and saw my photo.

I'm so honored that my picture is on first place ;_;
Thank you very much for this (and Batchix for donating this price), I will quickly write into the subforum.
