Contest Photography: Tableau Vivant! ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Jul 29, 2013

1. Photography: Tableau Vivant

Description:
Tableau Vivant means 'living picture'. In some instances people have taken the posed setting a step further, with stage actors posing out famous works of art. Armeleia thought it would be fantastic to see this concept applied to the world of ABJD's by the creative members of Den of Angels. And so, we've made it a photography contest!

Important Dates:

Deadline for entries: Sunday, August 18, 12:00am EDT (midnight) EXTENDED TO AUGUST 24TH, 12:00 AM, EDT

If you're unsure of your local time, please check with this handy dandy COUNTDOWN CLOCK.

Winners announced: Sunday, September 1st

Who May Enter?

This contest is open to all members of Den of Angels.

Rules:

1. You are re-creating a work of art using dolls, and therefore the dolls must be the focal point of the photograph.
2. You may submit one image, along with an image of or link to the artwork you are appropriating.
3. The photograph must have been taken for the purpose of this competition. Please no recycling of old images.
4. One entry per person.
5. Budget: Please do not spend more than $30.00 on this contest. We don't expect lavish costumes, but a nice background would be appropriate.
6. Minimal photo editing allowed. You may do basics like color correction and removing visible doll stands or wires, but everything else should be captured in camera.

Specifications:

You may submit your entry here in this thread, along with a brief description which would include a reference to the artwork that has inspired you. Points for creativity!

Voting:

A team of Moderation staff will vote, and the results will be posted here in this thread on 31st August 2013.

Prizes:

First prize: A Mini Machina Delta, whiteskin, blank generously donated by Batchix!! :D

The winner of a Batchix Mini-Machina is: ara* with The Death of Marat
[IMG]

Tied for second place were Katyok and Magic Elf.
Tied for third place were MacaronTea and anthrogirl.

This was an incredibly difficult vote!

2. To what extent can photo editing programs be used?

3. Heavy use of Photoshop is not allowed, but you may do the usual sort of clean-up and color/exposure correction. Because this is a photography contest, the focus should be on your photo skills not your editing skills. :)

4. Is there a limit on what piece of "art" we can use for inspiration? Does it have to be traditional art, or can it be digital art as well?

5. Does it have to be incredibly famous, like instantly recognizable? I have a favorite artist who has a relatively large following, but, of course, he's not like...Da'Vinci famous.

6. There's no limit to medium of art (it really should be a 2D artwork - sculpture might be difficult!), but it really should be a well known piece of art. It doesn't have to be as huge as Mona Lisa, but it certainly has to be easily recognisable by those viewing it.

If you're unsure if a particular work of art may fit the bill, please feel free to send us an example and ask over in Ask the Moderators. :)

7. Wow, that prize is pretty amazing actually and I doll I would really like to own. I am not sure if I am going to enter this it very much depends if I can think of a cool idea. :)

8. I think I know the answer to this, but can I use in-camera special effects? I'm thinking specifically of a multiple exposure. :)

9. Fantastic prize. I just love Batchix dolls.

This should be a fun contest. I posted one I did many years ago for a FDQ Magazine spread, over in the Just For Fun: Dressed to the Nines thread... That one had a couple of photoshopped elements, though (the clock and the candle and the books).

QUESTION: Spending $30 -- does that count everything in the photo? What if you already have items--dolls, clothes, props? Do we add up the cost and if it's under $30. it's OK or do we have to buy everything new?

QUESTION: Can we use photo backdrops?

10. That should be fine. I guess if multiple exposures are part of the artwork in question then it makes sense. :)

The $30.00 is in addition to anything you own. I guess a little description about what you've bought and how much you've spent vs. what you just had lying around would be beneficial.

Backdrops are fine. Well, so long as they are constructed with the above parameters kept in mind. :)

11. Cool, thanks! I did figure out a way to do it without the FX, just in case. :)

12. The dolls included in the photo have to be on-topic, correct?

13. Yep! And that's true of all of our contests. :)

14. Oh this should be fun! I've never entered a DoA anniversary contest before! and the Mini Machina Delta is such an awesome prize! (runs off to find silk scarfs for picture...)

L'Amour et Psyché, enfants (Cupid and Psyche as children) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau
[Also known erroneously as "First Kiss"]

Original:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/Bouguereau_first_kiss.jpg

Edit:
Eveything is home-made or I already owned. The brown wig I made myself out of a Diverse Disign sample custom for the shoot, the base is made out of an egg carton with cotton balls attached, and the background is a piece of painted computer paper attached to cardboard from a macaroni and cheese box. So, I deconstructed some household garbage to reconstruct into a piece of art! ^_^ the only thing I actually spent money on was a glue gun which cost a whopping $5 from target!

16. I'm just wondering if famous images of any kind would qualify here? Not just paintings? How about photo's for instance?

17. EDIT;
Nevermind, just got a FP with closed eyes from a friend, now I can start recreating my favourite :D

18. came into this thread to ask that exact same question. there are some photos that are as well known and iconic as certain paintings are.

19. Is there any chance that the deadline for this contest will be extended a little? I really would like to enter, but I'll only have one day to do it, since I get back from vacation on the 17th at night <.<

20. ^^ As Taralphiel helpfully stated before "There's no limit to medium of art (it really should be a 2D artwork - sculpture might be difficult!), but it really should be a well known piece of art. It doesn't have to be as huge as Mona Lisa, but it certainly has to be easily recognisable by those viewing it." Please pop by Ask the Mods if you want to double check with us.

^u^ Your wishes have been granted! The contest submission deadline has been moved to the 24th. Please see the first post for details.

21. Oh my gosh, yay!! This is wonderful news :D Thank you so much. Now I can really start thinking about this ^^

edit; I have a question ^^; Is it alright if the picture shows artistic nudity?

22. Alrighty then, since photo's are ok, here's Esme (MNF Ryeon) as Christine Keeler in possibly her most infamous pose.

This is the original, INFAMOUS shot of her Click for photo, taken by Lewis Morley in 1963. For the curious (and the non-Brits), here is Keeler's wiki: Clicky.

Total cost...ummm...zero? She's on a black skirt against a bit of foam board on a little plastic chair I use for my 1:6 version of Tony Stark. It's hot rod red ;)

23. Tasteful artistic nudity is fine, just like everywhere else on the forums. However, when you post your entry, please put a warning first for NSFW and then post it as a link :)

24. Sounds great! Thank you for letting me know~

25. Yay, extended time!

26. Oooh yay for extension, means I can actually enter!

If photo's of people are allowed and not just paintings, then I have a great one in mind and a doll that could pull it off!

27. I'm also pleased about the extended deadline, as this is the only contest I really wanted to do, and also the only one of the prize dolls that I would really love to own! I got the couple supplies I didn't have on hand already last night after work. Super excited! Now I just need to clear things off my table so I can get started. :)

28. ^U^ Glad to hear that the extension has helped so many :D Can't wait to see what comes out of the works, guys!

29. It has probably helped me as well to be fair since I have entered other contests! I am still really lost for an idea too so it gives me a little more time to think about it.

30. Here are my dolls Roxanna, Pearl and Delphine reenacting the famous painting called "The Nightmare" by John Henry Fuseli. The original picture can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:John_Henry_Fuseli_-_The_Nightmare.JPG

I always thought that this painting was a little strange and creepy, but wanted to make something a little more fun with Pearl and Delphine acting out the gremlin/horse parts.

Total cost was around $12-15? I purchased Styrofoam for the furniture pieces as well as paint and a tiny low heat glue gun.

31. Very nice! I have always found that painting, and several of the related ones, to be unusually fascinating.

32. Thanks EirChanHime! I know what you mean. Almost the same feeling I get with DC dolls. Just can't stop looking at them because they are so different and strange. XD

33. Alright, my entry is a take on Rene Magritte's 'L'Evidence Eternelle', or 'The Eternal Evidence'. It does feature artistic nudity.
Info on paintings: Click(NSFW)
Chosen reference image: Click(NSFW)
Submission: Click(NSFW)

I've always been a fan of Magritte's works, and when this contest came up it seemed like the perfect idea. :) This also took into mind this year's anniversary theme, deconstruction/reconstruction.

Total cost of supplies amounted to 50 cents for the white poster board; the frames were made of cardboard from a spare box, painted with acrylics already had on hand. ^_^ The only editing done was cropping the image down to size.

34. I've always loved Vermeer's 'the girl with the pearl earring' painting so I choose that painting to imitate. hope you like her :)

my entry:

Original artwork

edit: I didn't spend any money on the 'outfit' or earring, it's fabric scraps, a small scarf and my bathrobe's tie :) (the background is some black paper for my art class)

35. ^u^ Loving everything so far! Work hard!

A helpful countdown clock has been added to the first post!

36. Here is Pyskhe doing a famous pose by Brigitte Bardot.
When I saw this image of Brigette, I knew Psykhe needed to recreate it XD
Nothing was spent on this, the 'towel' is a flannel and she's on my Brother's black computer chair for a background.

37. Wow, beautiful entries, everyone! :D

38. [IMG]

I decided to do 4 of the 5 Marilyn portraits Andy Worhal painted in 1964 (3 of which were part of the "Shot Marilyn" set). - Red, orange, turquoise and blue.

I used this image as reference for colors, found on this website (about 3/4 of the way down) I couldn't find a better set of all 4 of them together.

All color were acheived by faceup using acrylic paint and pastels (nothing was done to achieve the colors besides the lighting! I was pleasantly surprised.. I thought I was going to have to repaint the wig each time a different yellow). The wig was a spare I had that I did paint with Yellow.

39. For my entry I used everything I already had at home: construction paper, crayons, colored pencils, tape, paper, cardboard and a leather glasses case. I started by printing out the background and a "body double" of my doll. You see the art work I chose had two similar looking cherubs, so I positioned my doll like the cherub on the left, photographed him then printed out the pictures as close to his actual size as possible. I then taped it to the background, positioned my doll like the second cherub and took a picture. This the result.
:)

The painting is part of this one here:Sistine Madonna
A lot of the time the original is cropped and you usually see this part . This has been on stamps, calendars etc...
Doll is a Lati Yellow Haru

40. What interesting entries already posted. Many different approaches. Cool stuff. I've decided what painting I am going to work on. I'm entering other contests so can't complete it early. What happens if someone were to choose the same image? I know there are millions of options, but could happen. Sorry for being a negative predictor type. Could we post what we are working on, so as not to have that little worry while gathering the goodies to make it happen?

41. I should imagine it would be the person who did the best execution of the picture. That is what I would have thought any way, also like you said there are many different approaches which will help make the entries different. I know it is unlikely however sometimes people have similar idea's.

I had to order some of my "props" so I have to wait for them to get here before I can start my entry, so I don't think I am going to be an early entry either. It is probably going to be later then the original deadline. So I am really happy it got extended.

42. Karla-chan is correct. On the offhand chance that there are multiple representations of the same famous artwork, execution will come into play. :) it would be rare indeed to have the same approach and final result!

43. [IMG]

For this contest I choose to recreate one of the paintings of the Polish painter, photographer and sculptor Zdzisław Beksiński. The painting is untitled, because the artist didn't name his works.
It was the nightmarish, surrealistic and dark atmosphere of his paintings that inspired me to choose this one.
Here you can see the original piece: http://beksinski.dmochowskigallery.net/galeria_karta.php?artist=52&picture=2442 or bigger version here: http://designsekcja.pl/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/beksiński_sztuka_designsekcja_7.jpg
I've tried to achieve the color palette and overall mood similar to Beksiński's painting through multiple exposure and white balance inbuilt options of my DSLR. And for this entry I only used things that I've already had at home, so the total cost is zero.

44. :'( harper, your entry link isn't working for me, please double check it ;u;!

45. The links worked for me but I still replaced the "click" with the addresses. Let me know if I need to poke at them some more.

46. I've finally gotten my painting options down to two haha. I found a whole series by one artist which I really loved, and it is so hard to choose! One is winning, so far, but we shall see! I'm going to have to wait til the weather gets a bit nicer though, they're both outdoorsy lol

47. ^u^ Thank you harper, your entry is working perfectly fine now :D

XD I hope the weather decides to cooperate! Can't wait to see what you come with >u< ~

48. Inspiration: the iconic National Geographic photograph of the Afghan girl by Steve McCurry.
Doll: Dollshe Van PaleTan
Money Spent: $0
Photoshop treatment: color correction to the cooler shade of red (the piece of fabric I had was a bit brighter tone).

49. Great minds think alike! I just did the Afghan girl too, but I also did five other shots of different works of art and I'm not completely happy with any of them. I probably won't make up my mind which to enter until the last minute.

50. I think even if you don't go with the Afghan girl it would be still awesome if you posted a link. I would like to see because we did have a discussion on how different people have different approaches! So I think it would be cool!

Good luck with picking your entry!

51. I would love to see your interpretation! I am sure it i excellent and creative.

52. I love it! I especially love the ripped shoulder detail with the green showing through, just like in the photo. Fantastic job, as always. :)

53. Thanks for answers about a duplicate subject choice. Just wanted to be sure you wouldn't have to drop out if your choice showed up before your own submission was public. [not that I plan to repeat anything already in the thread -- cool stuff by the way!]

54. A lot of great entries but I like anthrogirl's Vermeer's 'The girl with the pearl earring'.

Fantastic :):thumbup

55. Well I got the things I was waiting for today, but they are not as big as they said on the site... I will have to hope I can still get the idea across. I will be taking my photo's very soon.
