Other "Weird" Hobbies?

Oct 14, 2015

    1. I used to collect anime figures but I got content with my collection.

The main thing I collect are doujin cds. I guess they could be considered as indie artists in a sense.
My taste varies from fantasy ambient music to orchestral hymnos symphonic rock. I love the talent and creativity.

    2. I started BJD collection as a hobby last year. Spent extravagantly on her clothes, eyes, and wig. Gotten myself quite into it now that I ordered my second doll from Supia a few days ago. BJD collection is pretty new to me and interesting.

Besides dedicating myself to this expensive hobby, i have another one that I have love hate relationship with. That's Muay Thai. I have been training for 4+ years and heading my way to my first fight in the ring by end of this year.

What a weird combination of hobbies i have. I know a BJD collector whose second hobby is all about japanese otaku stuff. What about you?

    3. I've been an admirer of the BJD hobby ever since I was a teenager. I couldn't buy a doll until just this month (well into my mid 20's). Aside from the BJD hobby, I draw (20+ years experience) and sew(8 years experience). I cosplayed a lot in high school, despite the fact I couldn't sew very well. I focused a lot in getting better at sewing, so now a days I sew my own clothes and costumes!

So since my sewing skills have really improved, I figured it was time to finally buy a doll. I want to sew clothes for my doll (since sewing a full human outfit can take SOME TIME).

    4. I've been into dolls in general my whole life (my "creepy" porcelain thrift store rescues and large American Girl collection can attest to that) but only got seriously into BJDs about 4 years ago, with the arrival of my first girl Mei around 3 years ago on my 16th birthday.
I've been sewing for nearly eight years now as a cosplayer, and I also do historical costumes as well. I'm actually part of the fife and drum corp for the Union army at the Gettysburg reenactment every year here in Pennsylvania. I keep joking that i'm going to make Eddie a confederate uniform and bring him along as my captured spy!
I'm studying to be a historian, and might be getting my thesis paper on Catherine the Great published, but I usually study polar explorers...

    5. Since young ive been interested in crafting, making things in general. Now i still enjoy making craft (mostly about dollhouses) but ive gotten lazy, so most of my projects are half done and left alone :doh hard to commit in long projects..
I also love miniatures and i have a really small collection of them.
Ever since i started my BJD hobby, i also started sewing 1 year ago, and it is pretty much one of my main hobby now.
I've also tried face ups and wig making too as an experience, not sure if i'll commit!

    6. It's kind of hard to really pin point a 'hobby' I'm as into as the BJDs
However, I do play pokemon GO EVERYDAY. For hours at a time. Lol So I'd definitely say it was a hobby of mine.
I also collect Square-Enix//Final Fantasy PVC figures as well as most Zelda memorabilia .

the BJD stuff is the icing on the cake, but those other things are definitely things I enjoy doing.

    7. My only other hobby before and since the BJD hobby has been photography. I love taking pictures, I even tried 3D photography with hubby but I wasn't getting it. So I stuck with just regular. Photography has been with me since I was a kid. Now I use it for not just my life, but my hobby as well. One day I hope to get really good.

    8. Oh man I think I've been collecting weird hobbies like flies to honey. Taking the dive into BJDs doesn't even seem that strange after some of the things I've had to bring up to new aquaintances (or volunteered after a drink)!

For starters I'm big into the furry fandom. It's been the one over-arching thing in my life since childhood, and now as an adult I've had three of my favorite furry OCs made as fursuits (one of them - Ripley - is in my icon)! It's been so much fun to cosplay as them and I love the atmosphere of furry conventions (lots of dnd and good food & drink, nightly dances, and new friends)! This hobby seems to raise the most eyebrows, but I've come to realize that anyone who shames me for it isn't worth my time (though it's 100% fine if it's not for you lol).

Before my current full time gig I was between jobs and picking up roadkill almost daily to clean via beetles in my garage! I sold skulls and bones, sometimes articulated, and made wet specimens when they were fresh enough. I love animals more than anything so some people found this "vulture culture" hobby really off-putting, but it aligned perfectly with my thoughts and beliefs. I felt it was honorable and actually gave me a lot of comfort regarding mortality. I still miss it but it's too time consuming and I need more space before I take it on again lol.

This is already so long! But I feel any additional "weird" hobbies come down to things other adults think I shouldn't be doing past childhood, like virtual pet sites. Or people just plain having negative opinions about things I love like reptiles and bugs, or interest in True Crime genre. Plus some people may think my spiritual beliefs are silly if they come up, lol. I've spent most my life worrying about what people think and I'm now on the road to not caring and finding communities like this one when I need em! ;D personally, I love weirdos.

    9. I, uh, like to collect dollhouse sized wheelbarrows and buckets. Well, someone has too! :sweat

    10. I have a pretty big collection of monster high dolls. Some are in great shape and I like to find the missing bits of their outfits on ebay until they have everything No Idea Why. Some are a mess and when I have time I like to get the glue out of their hair, shop for missing hands if I can find them, make them new clothes, etc.

Actually buying some of the 17" MH dolls were SUPPOSED to keep me happy about not having a BJD. But we all know how that works out. All of the MH dolls have been sadly neglected since I got interested in this.

I also play video games, read and collect books, have a bunch of dollhouse stuff and a giant dollhouse that I work on very sporadically. I never consider any of this wierd until I mention it to someone and they give me 'the look'. I like to read on line and on forums because then I realize that there are a lot of people that share my interests and it's fun to read what they have to say.

    11. It’s really fascinating reading everyone’s responses! Southern California has a lot of hobbyists in all sorts of fields, so you all seem like pretty normal but awesome, interesting people to me!

I guess this counts as being a bit unusual... despite not being my profession, violin is huge for me. I’ve been playing nearly all my life and so that has led to a gigantic collection of sheet music and recordings (CDs, DVDs, LPs). Baroque is specifically where my passion lies, particularly Bach, but I also enjoy some early classical as well as folk music. I’ve helped transcribe various Irish and Scottish fiddle melodies to paper (most traditional songs are passed down by ear so sheet music usually doesn’t exist) when I was part of an association that performed. These days I don’t perform, just practice at home where I set specific goals for songs I want to be able to play. Also, perhaps because of violin, I started accumulating wood. I collect petrified wood, wooden music boxes, unpainted but varnished wooden furniture, and basically any kind of household decorations where you can see the grain of the wood. I don’t carve or do marquetry myself but really love going to the county fair every year to see the huge displays of items from the local woodworker’s association! Eventually some day I’ll try it out myself. :)

    12. My other (and now main) hobbies include collecting older video games, gardening, enamel pins, miniatures, and crystals. Not sure if any of them are considered "weird" but yeah. I guess the crystals can be considered weird since some folks use them for healing and spiritual purposes. I don't but hey, no issues here for anyone that does. ^__^

We have a local show every year that tends to provide better deals than online, and getting to see the selection in person is excellent. I have a close friend that also collects and when she goes to her local show, we always end up getting each other something. It's fun to trade and see what random crystals arrive.

    13. Duno how weird it is for y'all, but I repaint monster high and ever after high dolls. It's alot of fun... even though I've overheard people say it's weird when my mom brags to people lol

    14. Witchcraft, stage makeup and post apocalyptic fashion lol.... there are a few others, but I guess most of my interests are kind of obscure!

    15. What parts of witchcraft are you into? Herbs? Crystals? Chakra?

    16. I like traditional stuff that’s kind of a mix of a lot ! I use some crystals and I do a lot with herbs, and I also have a big thing for the whole life/death concept, which is what my altar is based around!

    17. Aside from collecting BJDs and other related objects (anime figures, plushies, Disney Animator dolls) I am also obsessed with reptiles. I currently have 3 geckos that are treated like royalty and I buy things for them pretty much the same way I shop for BJD items. Recently I have been spending more time and money working on reptile enclosures than I have on buying and completing BJDs. I also really enjoy collecting and using products from LUSH cosmetics, and I follow their limited ranges and make a point of trying every exclusive bath bomb. I suppose that is a more normal hobby but who's to say?

    18. My main weird hobby would be making Lolita dresses. Not necessarily wearing them just making them.

      • x 3
    19. I collect rocks, crystals, stones, fossils and dead bugs. I also play D and D so I paint miniatures a lot. I collect antique books, particularly anything involving shakespeare.

      • x 1
    20. I don't think any of my hobbies or collections are weird, but maybe the degree to which I collect could seem weird to other people... Like there's this video game couple I love, so I bought a whole collection of art prints of them and framed them and pretty much wallpapered my bedroom with them. That may seem overkill even to people who like video games or "ship" characters together. XP

    21. I am a h u g e fan of animals. I currently have... 7 ?
Two dogs, two cats, two skinks, and a ferret.
This isn't too weird, except I also have a tub that holds a roach colony for my skinks. My boyfriend HATES this tub, and our landlord (my bf's parents) don't even know the tub exists lol. So I'm sure that's considered weird.. but hey.. gotta feed my skink babies :aheartbea:ablah:

    22. You can't say you have SKINKS and not give us pictures!! :love

    23. Oh.. say no more! I would be HONORED to share my snek boys with y'all!! (It's actually a male and female, but skinks are nearly impossible to sex so I'm hoping I have a breeding pair. No babies yet this season tho.)

I'm pretty sure all of the pictures are of my male, Herb. He has 3 and a half legs. My female, Scarlett, is a B* and incredibly hard to handle so she doesn't have too many pics. She's such a brat! But regardless, I love them both dearly. My little snek bois :love:XD:

Oop, lemme add: These are African Fire Skinks (Lepidothyris fernandi)

    25. My fiancé and I don't really live a mainstream lifestyle so many of the people I meet here in Arkansas think everything is kind of weird which is why I'm not over-fond of 'explaining' it. Neither of us are 'from here', which is something I hear often. We just quietly do our thing and it's kind of annoying when people feel the need to 'notice'.
Most visible other weird hobby would be wearing Lolita fashion, I'm one of the mods in our local fashion meet-up group, we get together with the Kansas City group and I have enough Lolita pieces for it to be considered a 'wardrobe'.

    26. I've started doing Tarot this week, and my mom thinks that's pretty weird. She let me do a reading for her tho, which was a lot of fun. I keep a journal of all my tarot readings.

    27. I gave up a lot of hobbies because of work and not having time. It made me so depressed, that last year I decided to go follow evening classes once a week. I randomly picked bycicle repair because I didn't know what else to do that was still available... and now I LOVE it!! Like! Holymoly! I like working on my bikes, even though I still got a ton to learn.

Not a weird hobby, considering lots of guys in my country also are in the bycicle hobby and work on their bikes.. but I'm a woman. And I'm also the only woman in my class. Which makes it a bit weird.

    28. I don't consider it weird but I am into crochet. Below are my sample works for my now 3-years old baby girl. She really grows fast, and she can't wear this anymore but I am keeping them anyway.

I am planning to create some dog shoes out of my yarns after finishing some pillowcases.
Also, I love watching horror movies and scared the hell out of me. There are times wherein my baby will watch it and just enjoy the film.

    30. I crossdress!
Well...not as much as I use to.
Now though, I just mix male and female clothing--making sure the combinations fit. If not...well, gotta love mixing sometimes. Kinda like what you see in Japanese kei fashion(s). :whee:

    31. I collect language books, as in books on how to learn whatever language. Not just mundane but I also have books on languages like elvish. I think different languages are beautiful and it’s boring just speaking English. Although due to work and being a mom I’m very out of practice. But hope to someday be fluent in at least 6 other languages other than English.

    32. I've been told my collecting teacup and saucer sets is weird. I love finding a poor, abandoned set at thrift stores and I never want two sets to match! My favorites are English teacups. I found a gorgeous Wedgwood at an antique store once, but it was way too expensive T^T
      I still think about it sometimes, though ^_^;

    33. I collect fairy figurines. <3 I have them on shelves everywhere and even hanging form the ceiling.

    34. I collect tarot decks, and am in the process of creating one (in collaboration with an artist). I have an instagram for my deck-in-progress and am happy to chat about tarot generally if anyone is interested :)

    35. I collect Pokemon cards, especially the old ones. I'd like to have a complete pokedex, meaning owning one card of each existing Pokemon. I also collect BNHA game cards (I guess I just love cards lol).
Then I just got a baby snake! It was one of my childhood dreams to get one, and I already love him so much!

    36. I collect folk music! Mainly older stuff, like the Child Ballads, and foreign folk. I'm especially fond of murder ballads and songs in Finnish. I have quite a few of them memorized and am working with my dad on my own recordings of them! I also really want to be able to sing some of the ones in other languages, but so far, I've only been able to learn the ones in Middle English and one in Gaelic.

I also used to attend a circus summer camp when I was younger! I don't really practice much anymore, mainly due to lack of proper equipment and space, but I can walk on stilts and balance on a rolla bolla, among other things.

    37. I'm not sure if this is considered "weird", but I grow orchids as a hobby...

    38. I'm getting into lolita fashion! I'm also into sustainability and less waste, which some people might not think is weird but in a family full of people who could care less about the environment, it's pretty weird. I used to collect those porcelain "small but knowing clowns", too, but they're all in storage.

    39. I collect medical antiques: anatomy models, dental tools, human bone specimens, old medical kits, dissection tools, I even have a couple of antique trephines (what they used to drill holes into heads)! I love morbid history: death cultures, medical science, executions, and true crime. I love books and museums all about these subjects. Less weird: I watch a lot of obscure horror films from the 70s/80s, and listen to/buy vinyl of some pretty niche music that I love (doom, drone, shoegaze, electronica, post punk, math rock etc).

    40. I started collecting "classic" cars, my current project is about the same age as I am. Lol rebuilt a 1987 series 4 RX7.
Looking for a new addition soon

    41. I don’t know if being a Renaissance Fair Addict is necessarily “weird” but it has made for some *interesting* situations when people only see the corsets and weapons and not my big poofy jester costume... :|

    42. I really really love 80s/90s boyband stuff... mainly Backstreet Boys,*NSYNC and NKOTB + a few others and I collect a lot of magazines from those eras. I like Lisa Frank stuff too. I love watching old TV like Dawson’s Creek and The OC.

Other dolls I love are Bratz and Barbie.

I also wear Lolita mainly old school stuff my favorite brands are Innocent World and Baby The Stars Shine Bright. I used to do cosplay but I wound that down when I got into the BJD hobby properly. Have been wearing Lolita for over a decade now. Also I love ridiculous platform shoes and handbags- anything that sparkles basically.

A few years back I used to collect a lot of old school hip-hop albums and Archie Comics.

    43. I collect dead things, whether it be bones, taxidermy, or wet preserves (all obtained ethically, obviously) as well as antique occult objects. I don't think it's that weird, but people are definitely put off by the idea of "cursed objects," of which I gravitate towards.

    44. I collect harry potter merchandise and I rebuy the book set whenever they release new cover art <3 I also collect "art dolls" and have obtained quite a few since quarantine c: maybe too many. I've stopped though for a bit so I dont go overboard with it. But here is an example of a couple of the ones I own <3

    45. There's so many amazing collections and neat hobbies in this thread! I don't collect much for the sake of collecting, so most of my collections have been rather small.

I've played TTRPGS for a long time, my local group in particular rotates GMs and games, so more often I read different systems (usually collecting a Core and a module if possible) rather than playing them. Some are bigger, some are more niche, some are weirder. I love reading systems and seeing how they support what they're going for.
I'm currently very happily reading Black Void and have the Conan 2d20 game on my stack next to read. Hoping to get my hands on a copy of 7th Sea in the future and to reread the copy of Troika! here.
If I'm running things or playing in things, it's mostly been Call of Cthulhu (7th or Pulp, depending on the mood) and my big soft spot for Starfinder, though I enjoy running Starfinder way more than playing in it. Recently a friend ran a small session of the Ghostbusters d6 game by voice and we had an absolute blast.

Anther hobby I have are my plastic model kits, mostly though I'm drawn to the mecha musume kits (Megami Device, etc), and only a little to Gundam/Gunpla. Those are getting me through the pandemic and I'm hoping when things reopen I can consider competing at the local hobby shop.

The usual biggest hobby that takes the slot of the kits is boardgaming, but with the pandemic it's not safe and our local shops have their game rooms closed for now. I'm sorely missing the regular weekly boardgaming as part of my scheduled fun time. I absolutely love going as it's one of the most diverse groups (in every category) of people to get to know. My husband also does written board game reviews on a fairly regular basis, so we're still playing online and some two player games with each other, just not at the rate we had been.

I used to do a lot of day hiking, but my connective tissue condition being diagnosed was enough that between that and my existing clumsiness, my doctors (and mom who did a lot of S&R) asked me to maybe stop going up the side of mountains where it's hard for EMTs to reach. I recently got my bike out of storage though and will hopefully start urban biking again.

Otherwise I still enjoy figure drawing, some other digital modeling, a bit of audio/video editing if I can, and some writing.

    46. I love TTRPGs and board games. I play them online now with friends instead of hanging out in person. My favorite board game has to be either Catan or Betrayal, and I have too many RPG favorites. :)

    47. Prior to dolls it was true crime and general morbid interest. Dolls became apart of that morbid interest but slowly broke off as I didn't find them nearly as 'creepy as the real life oddities that I knew of but still adored the art of them. Currently I'm really into resin art- in part because I was looking into resin printers to make my own doll and it grew into an interest worth pursuing as I've always wanted to make things to sell! Unfortunately resin art has made me put my dolls on the backburner for the time being as I raise money for molds!

    48. We've been doing a lot of Tabletop Simulator, Tabletopia, and BoardGameArena, but there's a cooouuple games that just don't behave well when everyone's talking over each other. XD I'm very much looking forward to getting to try out Sidereal Confluence which is all about a lot of trading going on at once.
Betrayal Legacy my local group was hoping to finish before one person moved, but we'll have to wait for them to come visit now. ;.; (Betrayal Legacy is fantastic, I liked it better than regular Betrayal, even though I'm always iffy on games where you mark the components).

    52. This is a fun thread :)

I collect general toys & stuffed animals, they bring me great joy. I like a lot of the really old stuffed animals, and make specific trips to toy stores that carry collector items of that nature when I take trips.

I also collect rocking horses - I have a few places in particular that I look for them and usually purchase ones that are about 10" tall. I make specific effort to at least get one each Christmas and have been doing that for about five years. My most prized one comes from a country that no longer exists any more! Digging up the history on that one in particular was great fun.

I also really like these figures called "Dunny" by a company called KidRobot who partners with artists and museums to create these rabbits printed with famous art. I really can't explain what it is about them as shapes, but I love them, and the fact that they have famous artwork on them is a big bonus.

Maybe not weird, but I also collect books. I have my set of "purchased new" of course... but I really enjoy in particular going to used bookstores and picking up science and math books that are old. I just LOVE how old books look on a shelf. My most prized used (vintage?) book is "Edison as I Know Him" by Henry Ford.

I feel like it's SO (pun intended) much more popular to sew these days, but back when I wanted to pick it up as a 10-ish year old, everyone told me that no one sews anymore, so I always thought it was a "weird" hobby as well.

    53. I used to be into collecting 80's My Little Pony-I actually found BJD through a thread on the off topic forum at the My Little Pony Trading Post. I reduced my collection down to just my favorites though since I ran out of space.

I got into making Gundam models(Gunpla) when I lived in Japan. I had to reduce the number of those down to just favorites when I moved back and just recently got back into making them.

    54. I used to cosplay a lot, and I very much enjoyed making and wearing costumes of various fandom character. In the last few years I ended up swapping cosplay for LARP(Live Action Role Play) instead (not that cosplay isn't great, just LARP is better for me) and so I've been running around in the woods in my OC costumes hitting people with foam bats and nerf guns. I'm actually pondering getting a few dolls for my LARP characters who either were retired or died. I'm still debating whether or not to find a doll who looks like me, or pursue sculpts that fit the mental image of the character more. If I can find a good body that is similar to mine, that might make the decision easier, lol.

Since I was little, I've collected a variety of toys and things as well. I have a very old collection of toy horses (including some MLP), and a more current collection of teddy bears from all across the globe. Those two collections are still in storage, sadly, but my smaller Maneki Neko (Beckoning/Waving Cat, also called Lucky Cats) collection surround my desk and fill my bookshelves.

I also collect precious stones, something I picked up from my dad who is a geology nerd, and have found new focus in this from my realization that I can use them as part of my pagan witchcraft. My partners have called this my "shiny rock" obsession, but hey, I tell them at least it's less expensive than cut jewelry!

    55. Well for one I'm massively into true crime. That can throw people off on occasion. My taste in music and video games is pretty unusual. Finding new music at this point is a whole hobby on its own. I'll listen to almost any genre of music, including out there ones like noise and any genre with a word in front of "pop" or "core" lol.

Living in a really small space means that collecting items isn't particularly easy, so I don't have any other collection hobbies. I'm completely obsessed with slime, like the stuff kids make with glue and all that? I buy from slime shops on the regular.

    56. I’m in my sixties and have always collected beautiful things and they do mount up! BJDs are my most recent enthusiasm.

I collect kaleidoscopes. Some are by artists and some are good quality children’s toys. Before I retired I used to keep a few inexpensive ones in work. I found that looking through them occasionally was a good mood elevator for both myself and some of my coworkers. :-)

I also collect solid glass globes of varying sizes. I found two large clear glass ones with bubble inclusions in an antique store years ago. They look great in the garden catching the light. :-)

I have a large library of about 3,000 books, a growing yarn stash for my knitting hobby and an expanding Lego collection! I also love original art work so I have quite a few paintings and prints. Sometimes I feel as if I am happily living in a museum!

    57. I have loved collecting things all my life. Nowadays I collect dead things (I prefer skulls & bones, and I prepare them myself), houseplants (bf asked if I could just stop bringing any more plants home), gemstones and rocks, knives and other sharp things, and even teabag wrappers. I also have many tarantulas but I don't label it as collecting because collecting animals sounds just wrong.

    58. I have a few small to medium sized collections of things that I like/plan to use in my hobbies: beads, many art supplies, teapots, books, graphic novels and comics, manga, yarn, fabric, a Singer 66 found at an estate sale, pretty dishes, and Gen 1 My Little Ponies.
      It's like I collect hobbies.
