Do you have any hobbies other than BJDs that can be considered "weird"? What are they? How'd you get into it?
I like vintage Fisher Price toys. My mother gave away my 1972 Little People house and it took me quite a while to assemble a complete set with the wooden figures. It's in my closet. If it wasn't in my closet I would be very upset. And I suppose being in my late 30s to early 40s and suddenly wanting fashion dolls. I went with Tonner. If my mother knew how much Tonners and BJDs cost, she would have a litter of kittens.
I don't really consider it a hobby, but ... I collect dictionaries? Any and all kinds of dictionaries. I don't even know why ._.
Possibly my particular version of anime figure collecting; I only collect from a single series (with a couple of minor exceptions), instead of collecting a broader range, and it does extend to other merchandise (artbooks, wallscrolls, pencil boards, etc). That one came from my deciding that I needed a good (if artificial) way to limit my spending at anime conventions, and choosing one specific series to collect (which, at the time, was an older series with less merchandise) was a good way to do it. It would have been more effective if it hadn't been relaunched with an updated anime a matter of months after I made that decision. Possibly also being an adult with a massive collection of Build a Bear plushes. The ladies who work at the local BAB recognize me. I'm not kidding. (They're sweet, and I'll probably take them holiday cookies again this year.) I don't collect everything they put out, just the ones I really like, but there's been a lot I really like since I got started down this dangerous path.
Most of my hobbies are pretty weird, outside of stuff like Art. Aikido, longbow archery, and medieval reenactment are not usual except maybe around here.
Integrity FR dolls, Tonner, Phicen females, Pullips, Silkstone Barbies.........sleep when I can get it or my meds kick in.
I collect anime production art (cels and sketches). Now that anime is more mainstream people tend to think it's cool to have art that was used to animate the show. What they would think weird is how much some pieces of plastic or paper cost. How I got into collecting them was the obvious route, I watched a lot of anime. Once I found out you could actually BUY production art I was hooked.
I'm a cosplayer, costumer, beledi (belly dance) performer/teacher, been in the SCA, am an anime otaku (or the female version thereof), LOVE SF & fantasy, am TOTALLY besotted w/KDramas & KHotties (OMG) to the point I'm learning Korean - and I'm a member of both Nova Roma & Nova Byzantium LOL Major geek here. I read a lot, & have written some short stories & a couple novels (that will get published via my blog most likely - I'm so not interested in diving into the mess that is publishing at this point). So yeah. I've lots of hobbies - or interests. A lot of them include the dolls!
Haha... I feel like I have really weird hobbies and don't tell people about them. Other than BJD, I also wear Lolita fashion and collect taxidermy. All the expensive hobbies...
I'm another anime cel collector, though I've had to back off quite a bit on it. Xtal do you have a cel gallery anywhere?
I collect antique keys, dragon statues... I also tend to collect journals. I buy them with the intent to write in them but generally just end up keeping them because they're pretty.
I have maaaany "weird" hobbies/collections. First there's my obvious book collection - which while not as weird as some of the other's still is rather costly and takes up A LOT of room. Then there's my Card Captor Sakura collection that i've just recently started. I'm mainly focused on the figures and mini-figures but I eventually want to get all the manga and some prints etc (I already have the dvd set of it all) Then there's my Doctor who collection. Which is currently only new who, and i'm missing a few of those boxsets and i'm missing a good few other things like sonic screwdrivers etc but I will get there! I also collect Disney DVDS (the only ones I don't want are the fantasia's because they creep me out) Also Ghibli DVDs, Sims games and Marvel dvd's. Then there's the ever weird and odd collection of playing cards... I just have so many... I never use them for anything, they're just THERE. It's just something that I feel a need to have... Then there's marvel and disney based funko's and small playset figures and my build a bear "collection" which at one point was a family of like 20 but I sold a bunch and now I have 4 (two I bought in the past month)
Well...maybe archery (olympic recurve). Although I am a bit knocked out at the moment due to elbow trouble (similar kind like you can get from too much tennis). And I like model railways and to look at models and make models myself in general.
I collect The Simpsons DVD Series and ghost story books, but at least those don't take up much space and are a lot cheaper than the dolls!
I collect mahou shoujo (magical girl) merchandise, HP Lovecraft books and Cthulhu items, and I'm a mermaid (I have two tails at the moment).
It's more a lifestyle than a hobby I guess, but being a furry is weird to a lot of people. Coming with fursuiting, drawing, collecting plushies and hanging with other furries.
I love succulents, collect rocks and fossils. Those aren't that weird. I also have a thing for hand-taming aggressive lizards, like wild monitors and tokay geckos-until they are comfortable with people and seem content to be touched or held. It makes me happy.
She does! Or did. I think it's hidden now, and I lost the link a few years ago. The dolls made me cut back a lot too. The last several years, I haven't bought much of anything not doll related. Here's my old and dusty gallery: Aernath's Heartthrobs Do you have one? I'd love a link! I'm getting back into stained glass. And occasional backyard stargazing with a small telescope.
I do indeed: Quinta Essentia Although I am a horrible bargain hunter. It had been hidden for a while, then I think I changed the name or something. It's back where it was. I haven't bought much either. Mostly it's that there isn't much I feel the burning need to have. There are a couple of cels I still want but if they exist people just aren't selling. I'm always interested in looking at cel galleries.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of visual novels, which are a niche hobby as is (and stereotyped in a certain way). On top of that, I'm a fan of english visual novels which are even more niche. Not particularly weird I guess, though I get some weird looks from people who are vaguely familiar with visual novels.
My strangest hobby outside of dolls would be vulture culture. I like to collect animal bones, pelts, wings/feathers, etc. Some I find naturally in the woods, others I have cultivated myself from found deceased animals, a few I have bought outright. Otherwise my hobbies are pretty standard (for non doll people and doll people). Art, Monster High dolls, baking, anime, various other kinds of cartoons and television shows, fashion, animals, etc.
I write fanfiction. Been writing it for ... 17 years now, I guess. I know a lot of people have their ideas and opinions about fanfiction, but I just love writing it. It's GREAT practice, I get to write my own ideas for shows and movies I really enjoy, and share them with fellow fans. And people seem to love the stories I write, so I guess I'm doing something right. I also write my own original stuff, but the fanfiction sucks me back in every time.
I have one Lady Douji's Cel home Although it's in desperate need of updating. I managed to get a bunch of cels a few years back I've never scanned and uploaded.
Mine are probably not weird. I collect rocks and gemstones, glitter, monster highs, letter sets, stickers, notebooks, art books and yaoi doujinshi (selected ships and artists). And of course I have lots of fiction books, mangas, comics and even some visual novels. I also get tempted by cute figures and plushies but I'm pretty selective about them. I used to collect adopts but I'm selling all of them now.
I make lipsticks at home (I've made way more colors than this, but I haven't taken a "group photo" yet) It's gotten to a point where I'd need to sell them on Etsy, but all the labelling and shopkeeping I'd have to do is scary.
Stuffed apes and monkeys (not real ones) including Beanies and larger plush. I just love monkeys and apes, especially gorillas. I have continued my mom's collection of powder compacts. I have ones from the 1930s through the 1970s. Some of them are very ornate. Dollhouse miniatures (but that's not really unusual) no dollhouse however.
I collect bones, fur, and taxidermy... Some people think it's weird, some don't. Greetings, fellow vulture! Do you have pictures of them?!?! I'm going to save up for my own from Merman Jesse!
Fountain pens! I got one for drawing originally, but I was amazed with how smooth and nice it felt to write with it that I wanted to see what other pens were like, and then I found all the beautiful colors of ink available, and tons of cute Japanese pens with adorable designs, and lovely journals with super nice paper (though I've always loved journals, fountain pens make them even more fun to write in). I started keeping a daily journal just to have an excuse to write with a different pen and colored ink every day. My favorite pen aesthetically is the Sailor Clear Candy, for writing it's a toss-up between the Lamy Nexx with the calligraphy nib and Pilot Plumix.
Oooh do you have the notebook problem? You know where you see a notebook. You want to buy the notebook. But you have like ten other notebooks. Most of which are still empty. You don't need the notebook. You're probably not going to use the notebook anyway. What's the point? Don't buy the notebook. You buy the notebook.
Yup, I've always had The Notebook Problem and it's almost worse now that I've gotten into fountain pens, because they work best on good quality paper that won't cause the ink to feather or bleed (as well as feeling like the smoothest, most pleasant stuff to write on ever ), so if I see a journal with good paper I just have to buy it. Even if I remind myself I've got a stack of them at home, plus two full reams of laser printer paper (works surprisingly well with pen ink), and at the moment no space to write until after we move, I still can't resist a good journal.
I used to go to the beach and dig up clams, but I don't live within two hours of an ocean anymore. I ate them (cause I hate wasting life and food...and it beat buying them at the grocery store. Free seafood ftw) but I mostly did it because I liked the digging. I kinda just like digging in general but I don't like the idea of digging a hole for no reason- filling it up isn't nearly as fun. Other than that, I write erotic literature. And I do mean literature; the one I'm writing now is 14 1/2 chapters at 67 pages in Microsoft Word, and in terms of dramatic structure its still in the exposition. Though the uh...*cough* action starts as early as chapter 2. It's written with that intent at the forefront, after all. Chapter 1 actually, if I don't count the prologue.
I collect tea cups! I'm crazy for vintage stuff, so I have a cupboard full of teas from all over the world and a small but very lovely tea cup collection ^-^ I also bake on my spare time, sew and do some random cosplays xD
I table top game. I really love paper and pen role playing, and we have so many board games that our selves are bowing. My favorite type of game is miniature war games, like Warhammer and 40k, Malifaux, and Infinity. My newest army is High Elves, here are my newly painted Reavers. gwreavers by lori jackson, on Flickr
Wow, those look amazing! My ex used to love warhammer and stuff like that. I'm blind in my left eye so I have a hard time working on projects, especially teeny resin models. Its amazing how you guys can get so much detail into such a small space! As for me, other than starting out in the BJD community I like to repair broken dolls (MH, EAH, Barbie, porcelian dolls, you name it.) I also collect books and Manga which is very space consuming, along with all of my repaired dolls. I also have a small army of random assorted toys (gumball machine toys, mcdonalds happy meal toys, some anime figures, ect)
I'm constantly resisting pretty notebooks and I don't even have a fountain pen collection as an excuse. Although sketchbooks and sakura micron pens are my weakness.
I guess my other weird hobby would be planning. I have a hoard of planners that I use for different purposes. It drives my boyfriend insane on holiday when I try to plan every second of our day even looking up places near to eat near the place we are going so everything is taken care of but I like being in control. Of course I completely lose it if something does not go according to plan which happens 70% of the time. Also have a planner just for my dolls that has a list of projects I want to do with them, wish list, and inventory listing each of them and what items they have and how much everything cost etc. It makes live a lot easier for me I think
My "main" hobby besides dolls is LARP, and not just the Fantasy variety. Right now my main focus is our Star Trek group, so I do a lot of prop-making and costuming (I'm pretty much the only one this picky, but I do want my uniform to look as screen-accurate as possible) and all that jazz. I also own more instruments than should be kept in an apartment the size of mine, and I'm currently doing lots of Medieval music (the real kind, not the "two big-arse drums and a bunch of bagpipes" variety), partly for Larp but for concerts as well. Not sure if it counts as a hobby because it's not a regular thing, but whenever I can get my hands on them I adopt and remodel old instruments ... and I still dream of building my own Viella (a late medieval ancestor of the Viola Da Gamba)
I have a couple of unusual pursuits that having children has got me into, such as mudlarking (scouring the banks of the Thames for historical debris). We have a medieval leather shoe sole, bits of Roman roof, an Elizabethan bear tooth from when there was a bear pit next to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and many, many clay pipes. Fossil-hunting will be our next jaunt. We live on a coast that is rich in chalk fossils. I am also an avid paranormal investigator. This is the more serious side of ghost hunting. I have seen and heard some extraordinary stuff and also spent many long, cold, dark nights sitting around in some crumbly old building with absolutely nothing happening. You have to be patient in this field and have a good set of long johns.
Well aside from dolls, i also like to paint my nails (i guess its not that weird except for the fact that i tend to grow my nails really long which can be a bit creepy), but due to that, I have to wear latex gloves whenever I handle my dollies, because nail polish can leave marks (but they are easy to remove with a bit of magic sponge) .
I'm a pet rat breeder... Trust me when you are both a BJD creator/owner AND a rat breeder, people always have something to say!
I'm super into fishkeeping and aquatic gardening. I literally can't keep a terrestrial plant alive, but I'm all over underwater plants and joined the Aquatic Gardeners Association. Still not at the level of skill I would like though, since the high level stuff is like... bonsai gardening underwater. I'm a giant bleeding heart for ornamental fish and want to punch someone whenever there's a goldfish in a bowl. >_> they need like a lot of space and are super poopy. I also took away my little cousin's betta fish because its water was in such bad condition that its fins rotted and grew back in sideways.
I collect aquatic themed stuffed animals. ^_^; I have many octopuses, sting rays, whales, sharks etc but the most interesting one is my Molamola plush from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
I was really bad about that for years, but after picking up a hobonichi planner for the first time last year, I've pretty much become notebook monogamous. Still have a pile of books just in case, but all of my day-to-day agenda, concepts, and notes go in the hobonichi.
let's see, I'm part of the SCA (a historical reenactment group) I also do the shadow cast every Halloween for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I'm pretty into my nails too! I don't cut them at all, just let them grow until they break and then file them. The longest they ever get is about 1/2 inch past the fingertip. I actually get a lot of compliments! And occasional people who think they're creepy, but they're rare. Not that weird, but I also run a pathfinder game (very similar to dungeons and dragons) and collect designer makeup and nail polish.
Hello fellow spinner! I only have one wheel right now, but multiple spindles. If/when I get a second wheel, it will be an Ashford Country Spinner. I also do other fiber crafts. It's nice because they are all connected.
I am also a spinner! I currently have three spindles and one wheel. Related to that, it appears that I collect yarn and fiber. I just bought two alpaca fleeces at Rhinebeck.
I like to design latex clothes and stuffed animals. I love lolita fashion. Super big into 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons. I've done lots of alternative performing usually contortion based I also collect antique medical equipment.
I do Circus ... Aerial Hoop, Static Trapeze, Aerial Silks and Contortion. Most people think that's pretty weird hah! I also used to be a pretty serious ballet dancer before picking up circus but that's pretty normal to most people I also play a lot of Tabletop RPGs such as New and Old World of Darkness and D&D (3rd or 3.5 and Pathfinder) or Shadowrun. I'm also a Cosplayer
I like paint resin garage kit. I've bought many of them, sailor moon is my favourite character at the moment
I used to be really into airsofting, but nowadays it's pretty much all dolls and occasional warhammer 40k painting. And drawing.
I used to be into cosplay, board games and (thanks to my husband) collectible card games too. My favourites are Magic: the Gathering, D&D, Vampires: the Eternal Masquerade and the Game of Thrones. However, right now I've set all hobbies aside and mostly devote my free time to taking care of my newborn baby-girl.
I love leopard geckos, and have two blazing blizzards that I plan to breed in the future. They are my babies and I love them dearly. Another hobby I have is collecting plush, and while that's not really that "weird", the most recent I've delved into are Build-A-Bears. It started with the Toothless plush to sit on my leopard geckos' shelf, but I couldn't just stop at one. I feel like it's really childish to collect Build-A-Bear, but dang Glisten the Star-Powered Reindeer is freaking adorable and I can't resist!
