I really like Lai, but I'm going to have to pass. Thankfully, I have two of the artist earlier heads. Angel N. 02.

 

I was so excited when I saw this forum pop up. I’ve been eyeing the Lai head sculpt and I think I might dip and get it.

 

I adore joydolls angel 2.0 head and for it made exclusion from collection’s height rule. Right now I have “head in the bottle”, but couldn’t be happier that decided to jump into opportunity and grab big head.

 

I just bought Lai in Switch/SNG normal skintone, direct from Taobao.

I'd wanted a Joydoll since I first laid eyes on the four Angel sculpts late last year (when I just came back from a dolly hiatus)... I think Lai is Joy's best sculpting yet. I have a whole lot of new dolls coming home this year and honestly didn't want to add anymore to the crew, so maybe this wasn't the best decision... but there we go. Time will tell.

From the IG announcement (same info is on the Taobao page in Chinese) ...

• Recommended shoulder width for females is 13.5cm+, for males 14.5cm+.
• Recommended neck circumference is 11.5cm and smaller.
• Head circumference is approx 21cm.

From more recent IG posts modelled on different doll bodies, it looks like Lai can go on a 65cm body, maybe shorter, if you're okay with a bit of bigheadedness.

I'm planning to make Lai female, and put her on a girl body around 64-68cm height. I was also waffling between Volks normal and Switch normal, and decided to go Switch because at my planned height, I'm more likely to buy a body made in Korea or China, than Volks.

 

I was wondering if the switch milky tea resin color was easy to hybrid with? I really like the color but it seemed when I was doing research that it’s a hard resin color to color match with.

 

@Fuailei From what I can tell, Switch milktea rose doesn't really match any other companies' resins. Some companies can resin-match their bodies to it though - Vings offers it, and I believe the two companies Doll Family-A and -H can do it if requested.

 

I absolutely LOVE the new Lai sculpt, but unfortunately I'm at max capacity and should probably be selling dolls not ordering new ones I'm very excited to see what everyone does with their Lais, though! The faceup shown is gorgeous but very neutral and soft- I would love to see this sculpt with some fierce eyebrows to give a more intense expression...

My wife ordered Lai, so I get to paint her when she arrives! We’re going to have her share an SD16 body, which if she’s the same size as the Angels like I’m hoping I’m sure will be fine.

I also have Angel #2. I’m a huge fan of the photos Joydoll has taken of the whole series, so I was basically doomed when it was released. This is Daniel.



His head size fits in my current doll family pretty easily, but I have a lot of other Chinese doll heads on the same scale. He’s on an old Luts SDF65 body, for the record.

@deathdoll You want a small SD wig, 8 or 9 inches but not 9-10. They’re listed as “small 3 point” on Taobao.

20-21cm is about 8 inches so I would go with that.

 

I ordered Lai in milk tea rose last night. My plan is to get another HD64 labyrinth body when switch makes them available again or else resin match through DF-H. :3

 

Yeah… but I have early 2010s dolls with some big heads so I’m not super worried about them sticking out in the final analysis hehe

 

Having received my Labyrinth body I am definitely going to buy a second one for Lai if they rerelease it. It’s so good!!!!

 

First batch of Lai have been sent out. Mine should be home this week!
Plan is to put her on the new IMPL Model body. Shoulders are a bit bigger than I’d like(14.5cm), but it should work.

 

My Lai was also shipped! I ordered from Joydoll's Taobao store so it'll be shipped to my proxy's warehouse first. I'm waiting for a few more items to arrive at my proxy, then I hope to send everything including Lai home before the end of Sep. I can't wait to see my Lai, and everyone's owner photos.

 

Just going to say I'm lurking here in hopes of photos. Lai is a beautiful sculpt!

 

I'm hoping for a preorder of the 1/4 scale Jakki soon! In a comment on Instagram a few weeks ago, Joy said there would be one "next month" so... September? I believe it'll be only for the head but it seems from other comments that the colours will match with DF-H.

Just like to know if you settled on a body for your Lai?
I have an Angel No.2 that I'd preferably would like to put on a 60-65 cm body, and since these heads are pretty much the same size I wondered whether you had found anything suitable.

I am not that familiar with SD-sized dolls myself, but after some research I'm thinking of putting my boy on the Delf Muse v.2 body.
It's 64cm with 14cm shoulders and 9.2cm neck if that's of any help to your own search.

 

Lai is here. The sculpting is subtle and intricate - I really think this is Joy's best work yet.



Next to my Kanadoll Mars, who has a 8-9" head (21.8cm / 8.6inch, to be precise) and is on a 65cm boy body. I haven't measured Lai's head yet, but by eyeballing them, both heads are similar in size and proportion.

Lai was not planned, a bit of an impulse buy too, although I gave it serious thought before joining the preorder. I had buyer's remorse at first, then got over it, and now I'm really happy that I caved to FOMO and a bit of peer pressure this time! Lai is definitely joining my doll family, I plan to make her a girl and put her on a 68cm girl body. Not for a while though - the body I'm after is still in development, I think it'll be released before the end of the year. And I have other dolls to finish first!

Dang, mine was delivered and I have a body waiting for him as well, but I can’t open the package until I get back from college during my fall break.

 

I was lucky enough to receive my Lai this week and I second @aihre, the sculpting in Lai is beautiful. There’s just so much detail. My wife painted her for me this week (thank you @Amet ) and I am in love. As of right now I have her on a Volks SD16 body. The match is very good and like @idrisfynn noted, there is a slight gap under the chin that you only see if you’re looking up from underneath directly. The proportions are also very good. Not sure if this is her forever wig but the color is what I was hoping to have. I definitely think this sculpt is very versatile. It could work very well as either male or female. I am excited to do pictures of her next to @Amet’s Angel No. 2.

I’m tentatively calling her Seraphina. We’ll see if it sticks.

Lai today. I've been unable to find a body that I like for him. Would somebody know any companies, apart from Switch or DF-A, which offer colours that are close to Joydoll's SNG milk tea rose?

 

I got my shipping notice for my Lai today!! Staring at the Switch site waiting for them to open Labyrinth body sales again...

 

@deathdoll I ordered my Lai from Clover Singing- and I have not received a shipping notice yet... I'm getting a little worried now that I see so many people have already received their Lai heads...

I was able to buy a Lai head on Friday from Stacy’s Pink Ocean- I didn’t ask too many questions haha. Thought I’d post here in case anyone else is regretting missing the original pre-order like I was!

I also managed to get an in stock one. I regretted so much not getting it back when the preorder was on. I ended up getting it in soom tawny and I have no idea which bodies match with that tone (other than the companies that do matching service). I originally had planned to get it in milk tea but it seems there is none in that tone for in stock ones.

My Lai got here yesterday. Today I tried him on my Switch Labyrinth body just to see if I liked the proportions... they look SO good, even though there's a bit of a gap at the neck. So excited I decided to go with MTR for Lai!! And that Switch is rereleasing the Labyrinth body tomorrow!

My Lai has been stashed in her head box for the past 5 months... but I'm expecting her body (2DDoll's 68cm girl) to ship in around a month's time, so it seemed like the right time to paint her faceup. Update (21/03): What serendipitous timing... 2D has shipped her body.

She borrowed my 68boy's body for pics. Eyes are 14/6mm. She's wearing a too-dark temporary wig: I'm getting her a dark blonde wig and painted her faceup lighter to match that.

I have seen it! It's beautiful and I keep convincing myself I don't need another floating head. It looks so versatile and I can't wait to see photos of it with a faceup

 

Oshidori is completed, and I'm over the moon with her. Box opening for the 2D68 body - she looks amazing at 68cm.

 

I managed to snag a secondhand Lai head in milk tea after missing the preorder! I know it's a good match for Switch's milk tea, but would anyone happen to know any other companies that have a similar match? I want to start looking for a body for them.

 

Thanks for bringing up this topic again. I'm also still looking for a body in that colour for my Lai. I believe, Doll Family H and A do colour matching and make MTR.

 

Yeah they were the first companies I thought of but I wanted to see if there were other options out there and see which body I like best. I know Telesthesia should resin match it too but I'm not a big fan of the look of their joints.

 

Oshidori (Lai x 2D68girl)... I love this girl so, so much. I bought some new wigs for her and confirmed that she looks fantastic in grey hair... I will repaint her faceup in the proper colours.



Just wanna rave about how lucky I was to buy her. When Lai's preorder happened last year I fell hard for the promo pics, but I was already waiting for a lot of dolls and feeling overwhelmed by them (2 full dolls + 1 body + 1 head, which is a lot for me). I was really undecided, so I did my due diligence and made a pros/cons list -- and the pros column was stacked. Still, I would've sat out the preorder, but I talked to someone in the BJD Discord server who was dead set on buying Lai, and they convinced me to go for it. I was still undecided when I hit Buy, and I actually felt buyer's remorse immediately. But after a week the remorse went away and I ended up feeling glad that I bought it.

Now? I can't thank that person enough for gently peer pressuring me to join the preorder. I absolutely adore Joy's work and always wanted to own a doll made by her, so I think I would be kicking myself hard now if I'd missed Lai. It so happened that there was a girl body I really wanted to get (2D68girl), which worked perfectly since I wanted to make Lai female from the start. I'd also sold a girl BJD that I wasn't bonding with, but still wanted another girl in the crew. I'm not particularly drawn to female BJD sculpts, but Lai makes a captivating female face that I can look at and never get tired of. I'm amazed how much I love Oshidori. She's so wonderful and I feel really fortunate to have her home.

Has Joydoll ever brought back past sculpts? I'm at this point now of "kicking myself for missing Lai." I love the upcoming Jose and Jacob too, but Lai has really been on my mind so much!

 

EDIT - Sorry, I keep forgetting Joydoll has made non-1/3 dolls! Open-eyed Jakki (1/4) got 2 releases, and the J-Baby skeleton (1/6) got at least 2 releases, maybe 3. So I think Joydoll may do repeat preorders in the future if there's interest.

Joydoll has only brought back Angel no.2 for a second release, all the other sculpts have only had one release. At this stage, they don't seem inclined to re-release dolls, but perhaps this might change if there's enough interest.

 

How much did Lai cost by ordering directly from Joydoll? I want to know so I have an estimate of how much Jacob and Jose will cost hmm....

 

Hopefully someone can give you the exact price since I bought Lai through dealer myself. I considered buying directly when I got jakki but taobao always seems intimidating and the cost would have been higher for me.

I think Jakki in 1/4 has only had one preorder so far. It was released after Lai and it's the one I participated in. Before that, Jakki had been released in 1/6 time ago with its own body I think? I don't know if there has been more than one preorder for the 1/6 since I only started following Joydoll some time before the Lai release. But the J-Baby skeleton has had multiple releases for sure and a couple for Angel n.2 as you say.
