Sewing Japanese doll books for minifee sewing?

Jan 2, 2022

    1. Hi guys, I'm just wondering if anyone has found that any of the Japanese doll craft books have patterns that are a good fit for minifee? I'd love to grab a few and check them out, however, they are too pricey to just do that. :P Stuff like Dolly Dolly, etc.
They also don't have to be just Japanese craft books/mooks, I'd welcome any, I just know there are lots of Japanese ones floating around.

    2. I think a lot of the Japanese books are either a) pretty old (so before MNF took off) or b) mostly for dolls that are popular among Japanese collectors (Volks, Rosenlied, Unoa etc.).
You might at most be lucky to find some that have dolls that are close enough in proportion :(

Maybe someone here tried out a couple patterns though that still work just fine :)

    3. I think Dollybird might have some minifee patterns. It's a magazine, but a popular one that's been in circulation for quite some time.

    4. Search for "Ellowyne Wilde" patterns. She is exactly Minifee size. Designs By Jude has a lot of them.

    5. I think Minifee is similar in size to Unoa. There is a book series called U-noa Freak with four books in total. There are sewing patterns and step by step tutorials on how to make the clothing. There's lots of great photography in the books, too. I bought my copies from Hobby Search, but you can find them on other sites too (and secondhand).

There are also Dollybird, Dolly Dolly, and Doll Coordinate Recipe, but I don't think I've seen Unoa patterns in any recent issues of those three.

    6. As others have said, unoas are around the same size as minifee, but I think most books are more geared toward chunky MSD.
There's an old blog that has an index of bjd patterns. I've actually been (super kindly) granted access to post there in order to update it but haven't gotten the chance yet, but I'm hoping to add more resources soon! :) The existing posts were SO helpful to me when I was deciding which magazine/books to order.

    7. The Doll Sewing Book by Hanon has clothes for Unoa. I really like it, the instructions are in english and japanese, and there's a nice variety of styles. (The book's photos of finished pieces tend to be more folksy/mori, but it's easy to change that with different fabric.) The finished pieces fit my slim MSD very well.

    8. I can second the Hanon book! The patterns are really nice and her instructions are pretty easy to follow. I have quite a few of the Dolly Dolly sewing books, and they are MOSTLY geared at smaller dolls. Treasured Doll Coordinate Recipe (CD Japan link) has a variety of sizes, though! If you like that sort of look, that's worth checking out. I actually found their instruction pictures easier to follow even than Hanon's, because they made the stitching easier to see haha. (Although Hanon also has a YouTube channel, so you can see how she makes a lot of stuff on there!)

    9. There are a lot of minifee patterns on etsy actually

    10. (I hope saying this is allowed?? I figure Archive is reputable so...)
Many issues of Dollybird and Doll Coordinate Recipe are on Archive dot org! I highly recommend browsing archive for doll sewing pattern books!
