IMPL dolls Star, Model and Idol Discussion thread Part 9

Jun 23, 2016

    1. I don't know how that first one could possibly be cast with those bars in the front, though. You'd have to apply them later. l kinda like judging-you guy, though. He reminds me of Morgan, the burned-out wizard cop who makes Harry Dresden's life miserable. Oh for the funds to have all of those characters.

    2. Possibly, the bars are part of a helmet/headgear sort of thingie? I do like the expression/vibe of judging-you guy (it would be hilarious if his sculpt was named Judge) but those lips lose me.

    3. I at least want the heads! I can get the bodies later or hybrid, but even at $80 a head, that comes to a good amount for 4!

    4. Those fantasy heads are astounding - I agree, @chalyss, $80 a head is completely reasonable!

    5. If they are in that price range, I'm definitely going to scrape together the nickles for one of them. The thing just becomes which one...

    6. Ok ok I finally looked up what everyone is talking about.,, and I agree these are amazing! I am intrigued by the one with the helmet thing the most, thou the horned one has possibility too!

    7. @Noelblue @chalyss @Iron_Dog
something tells me they will be more...like $125 or in that range given that's what Chad beast head cost? who knows though!

    8. I'd still buy one at that price *nods*. Not right now (or in the next few months) as I can't afford it but....

    9. So weird! The Chad beast head isn't the same cost? Gosh, I thought it was.... maybe the fantasy ones with the extra resin on the head caps are more. Still, heads now, bodies later! I like to hybrid anyway.

And you might have time @Iron_Dog; these are pics on FB but maybe not to be cast a while? Not sure, Sean's pretty fast.

    10. I've got a body ready to receive a noggin. Funny how my laziness in not putting that body up for sale months ago when I realized it wasn't going to work for the guy I'd bought it for is probably a good thing.

If CANPost is on point, my new guy will be delivered tomorrow *fingers crossed*. At the end of August (or there about) I will be ordering Eilam (SD Rail) and that'll drain my dolly funds for a while. So, for me, the longer the heads take, the better to build up funds again for me. But that's me being selfish.

      • x 1
    11. I hear ya! Same here! I need some time to get funds together too. Here's hoping it's a Fall release or something...

    12. wow I love the flowery girl head. Hope they release a same style woman body. Back in the days when I was new in the hobby I almost bought a dollzone Anson/Moment but I was broke and I didnยดt like the stylized face....

well Iยดm currently broke now too but in 2 months or so... But first of all my Azaelas body - named Amira - is short before shipment. The seller mentioned that Impldoll have sent the replacement hands and than I will get her. I hope the skintone match. The head is from their Azaela FB event the body from this spring... I should have waited to get her face upped cause I spend a lot on her fu and it looks amazing.

I also have no shoes for her. I have a pair of incoming boots but I want something lady like too.

    13. @MaryamDN, you are correct, the beast heads cost more! It was an extra $30, so $110? Still reasonable in this hobby! And special colors for a head are not extra, just the bodies.

I really hope Impl releases a leaner body for some of the fantasy heads. Not all of them should be on a the buff Idol. Like the horned one- he is awesome!

    14. I agree. $110 is reasonable for a head like that. I would certainly dish that out.

    15. Hey, @Iron_Dog I used to have a Miguel and the wigs stay on fine--he's pretty much an 8.5, I had him in one of those Monique Johnny wigs. Eyes are harder--the only thing that fits was an Eyeco 14 because his eyes are so long and the eyewell is really shallow. He looks good in fantasy colors. The sculpting on him is amazing--I sold mine because I was in the middle of moving and I couldn't afford to ship everyone across country, but I did enjoy him and I am sure you will too! He's a good poser!

    16. I have him in my possession now. Customs nailed me once again for fees *mutters*. I swear, I'm on a list with them *glares*.

I did try some wigs on him and yes, they do fit just fine. However, I did that the day I got him and I think the black paint on him was throwing me off just for figuring out what colour of hair he's going to go for. I was able to figure out that bangs are NOT a thing for him, so yea! for that. I didn't test eyes at the time (figuring the black would throw me off on that, too), but that's good to know about the eye size.

I've spent about... 3.5 hours working on taking the black paint off him and so far have his head cap completely cleaned and his head about... 95% cleaned (all the nooks and crannies are going to be a straight up PITA to clean). He's heavier than I expected him to be but also very gorgeous and I'm thrilled beyond words to finally have him. He's a little loose right now so I can't attest to how he stands/poses, but I'll also need to take him apart to de-paint him and then re-string him.

Clothing him is going to be... interesting. I certainly don't want to cover up all that lovely bone structure but he'll need to wear something just for modesty sake. I don't mind him letting it all hang out, but that could be awkward in public *snickers*. I might have to do some research into Roman/Greek armour styles since my vision of him is as a warrior-type god and use that as a starting point for my patterns. Yet another doll I own that requires custom patterns *sigh*.

    17. yeah something like that... it was many months ago and i didn't actually go back to check what i paid but i definitly did pay more that $80.
eeeee... x_x they've been harder with those Canadian customs lately eh? i keep getting hit for none doll stuff because people/ companies aren't willing to under declare but thank fully haven't been with any parcels i've had under declared (of course that minimal insurance)
i got a bit tired of waiting on armors and pieces in the right size and i've started making simple pieces from leather and vinyl (fake leather) it's actually been great fun if you're curious to experiment. i started with a pauldron and whatever those leather stripped skirt thingies are. i actually ended up making a life size one for myself for the Osgoode medieval fair :P it's not as terribly hard as it looks...super fun!i bet you could create a pretty cool simple outfit with a bit of vinyl and some cotton drapey fabrics...maybe a bit of fur even.

    18. Anyone got an Alma? I'd love to see some spam of her, she'll probably be one of my next dolls! Bonus points if you have the muscle body haha:dance

    19. @MaryamDN Osgoode as in Osgoode Hall (or the street) in Toronto? Are you part of the local GTA group? Or are you talking about the place in England?

I figured I'd need to make him whatever I want him to wear. That's fine as I make nearly everything for my guys anyway. The leather skirt thing is exactly what I was thinking of. I may also see about doing some chain or scale mail if I get really adventurous. I'd need to buy the rings scales and experiment a bit but it doesn't seem too hard once you get the hang of it.

    20. @Iron Dog: That guy sounds very interesting. I am curious what you will come up for him.

And yes, neither mail nor scalemail is too difficult, just very tedious.

    21. I'm moving along quite well in the paint removal process. I've got his head cap, entire right arm including the elbow peanut (the forearm/hand is an RD mecha arm), left elbow peanut and hip/butt pieces 100% de-paintified. His head is about... 97% clean, too, but all the little grooves are being very resistant to releasing the paint. I've spent 8 hours so far in removing the paint from him. I'm doing the "easy" pieces first and have more or less 3 more in the "easy" category. After that, it's all pieces with those horns and that's going to be a loooong process.

I'm perfectly willing to try my hand at making mail. He's not the only guy I have who'd wear it and once you figure out how to do it, moving up/down in scale size is not a big deal. I think it would be a fun project to try. For now though, the paint removal is my big project.

    22. So I've emailed Alice's about the wait times for impl, but I also emailed impl themselves. AC told me it would be about a three month turnaround time, but Impl told me 45 days ish? :?

What has been the more realistic wait times for all of you? Has it been at all faster to order through a dealer like AC? Those are some pretty dramatically different numbers.

    23. Maybe the longer time for AC is due to when they put in a group order to Impl? I've never ordered from them so have no idea if that is so but I think a lot of dealers wait until they have a certain number of orders or for a specific stated date before sending the order(s) off.

    24. Has anyone gotten a Feixu yet? Or seen a blank photo of her?

    25. no, Osegood as in the little town near Ottawa :P they have an annual fair where they bring world class full contact jousters and it's EPIC to watch....and very jarring...but sooo EPIC.
do you mean part of the LARP group or the BJD group? I'm part of neither. This was just my first public appearance for my life-size animal headdresses to test out in preparation for larger future events...toe dipping really.
i would loooove to learn how to do chain and scale mail. it does look super epic. i know Rangvar makes my absolute favorite armory in the hobby but she's usually very booked. her prices are very fair though. i had a custom elvish sword made by her and still love it. you can also find chainmail scraps online which should actually be a good size to get at least some bjd props out of. the hardest thing to find has bee scales in the right size with slight curves to them :/
skirt thingy is very easy though. i suggest thicker vinyl but that's really up to you. if you're in the GTA i know i got mine from Fabric land there and they're only about $11 per meter or something

    26. Good lord, we appropriate England place-names everywhere multiple times, don't we? I guess that's the price for being a Commonwealth nation *smiles*. Yes, I meant the BJD group not the LARP group. I'd love to see a for real jousting match. It does sound pretty epic.

There's someone in the GTA group who makes chain & scale mail. I could likely commission something for her, but if I can make it myself, why wouldn't I, right? When I was at AnimeNorth this year, some dude there made himself a gauntlet sort of thing just for funzies (he was at a booth that was selling mail) and said if somebody wanted one, it'd be like $200. If I can make stuff like that myself, either for me or my dolls, I don't mind spending the time to do so.

There's a place online called The Ring Lord (they're based out of Saskatoon) and they have a truly staggering array of rings, scales, findings, etc. at what seem to me to be very reasonable prices. They also have a bunch of free DL's on how to do mail and a YouTube channel.

I have some fake leather stuff that would probably be suitable as boiled/hardened leather as it's quite stiff. I've also got some pliver kicking around in my fabric bin. I try to stay out of Fabricland as the temptation to buy all the pretty things is rather strong.

    27. A friend of mine once made a scale mail Bikini out of boredoom. Although she does not fit into anymore it looks epic. I donยดt think ist to complicated but very time consuming... Maybe I give it a try. I have materials in doll size at home and want to rewatch game of thrones or vikings.

Good news: Amiras Body is on shipping! I expect her to be here next week. I have still no shoes or an Outfit. Maybe I can sew something simple at the Weekend. I have now again excess to my sewing stuff after our move

    28. @Uminari, yay!! Gratz! hope she comes home soon!

    29. I never got an exact answer so I'll ask again-- how long on average have your guys' wait times been? I just got paid and Alma is tugging at my wallet.

    30. @flannelpaws During the free head events, the wait was about 2 months. The two full dolls I ordered from Mint on Card, arrived to MoC five months after I placed my order. I had to wait another month then to finish my layaway. My next order will be with them this fall when I order my Bernice. I am guessing the wait time will be about 2-5 months. Sorry I can't be of more help since I haven't ordered a full doll through the company before. I'm guessing that if you order the doll with a face up, that will add more time onto it as well.

    31. It seems to order from them directly is a lot faster.
my first order while the release of Marcus and Gnaeus need 5 months and was through angelesque
my seccond order for a body was directly and needed 2 months
my third order was the second Marcus as I sold the first version of him and it was directly through them, needed 1 month incl. shipping (that order was super fast)
m fourth was the Jerry head directly from them and it was around 2 months
my fifth order was the Azaela event and I donยดt know how long it took because I was very ill and then at the hospital for nearly the half year

I have quite an addiction to them :sweat
(Even though I only kept Marcus and Azaela)

    32. 2 to 5 months is a good guess for waiting times. You may get only a month waiting time if you just order a head with no faceup. Impl was pretty fast to cast and ship my custom red Deborah (avatar pic) once I paid off the layaway.

    33. Thanks all for your responses! I think I've got an Alma coming my way in the next coming weeks~

    34. I asked impldoll if they had a blank photo of the Feilxu yet and they said they would take one soon.. lol.. I am looking at all the dolls and I want a couple of them. Bernice and Alma are beautiful dolls. I have the Gnaeus and Aurora and they make me want more.

    35. Looking at Impldolls always makes me want more. *LOL*

    36. I have 2 Impls. A green Simon Colourful Life and a grey Miguel the Demon Hunter.

I love the translucent resin of Malachite's (the Simon) hands and ears. He apparently has the default face-up which is really nice with just a hint of glitter that I've yet to be able to pick up on camera because it's that light. he's a rock solid stander and he holds poses really well. he's also adorable.

Mkhai (the Miguel)... well I can't really speak yet of how he does or doesn't pose/stand as pretty much the moment I got him home, I unstrung him to start cleaning him of the black paint. he's heavier than I expected him to be and his resin is nice and thick. The amount of detailing on him is fantastic. The horns sticking out of him have a ton of tiny little lines/grooves and where the horns come through his skin, there's like a depression around it so that it looks natural for lack of a better word. It's a pain to clean but it's beautifully detailed. I even discovered while cleaning one of his calves yesterday that there's a tiny area of fancy scrollwork along one area of horn near his knee. I highly doubt I'd have noticed that if I wasn't cleaning him like I am because it's that small.

I'm looking forward to the new heads they've been working on that they shared on FB. I can only get one of them and I think that's going to be a tough decision to make since the two I like are equally amazing.

    37. Yeeeesssss
Tracking says the body for my Azaela head is in the next bigger town from me. Maybe she will be finally whole today

    38. I've finished cleaning all the black spray paint off Mkhai and strung him back together. He's not complete as he now needs a face-up and a wig, but he's finally paint free! It took me 20 hours of scrubbing, 2/3's of a 975ml bottle of isopropyl alcohol and 1/2 of a 950ml bottle of W&N and there is still some paint in the grooves and nooks that I can't get out, but I'm okay with that. The camera actually didn't pick up on the remaining paint but it is noticeable in RL. It ends up looking like shadowing, which is kinda cool. Not sure if I'm going to metal leaf his horns or not. Depends on how lazy I am since it's a very time-consuming process. And I'd need to take him apart again *grumbles*. But I just wanted to share him now that he's back to his "natural" colour.

    39. Oh wow, this guy looks so freaking cool even without any paint!

    40. Thank you. He was my grail from the moment I saw him when he was released in 2010 and knew I couldn't afford to buy him then.

For my purposes, he is from my Divine Worship world and is Mkhai, God of Warfare & Weaponry, Supreme Commander of the the Immortal Army and, for all intents and purposes, a living weapon. He is also fraternal twin to Ra-Sui, God of Decay & Guardian of Souls. He's not wearing the right clothes at the moment but I haven't had a chance yet to make the patterns/clothes he will be wearing. I'm hoping to do something inspired by Roman armour so that it can show off all the detailing of his awesome sculpt.

    41. WOW!! He is just beautiful! He may not be in the right clothes, but as a leisure suit, that robe is perfect to complement his coloring! He is a shimmering beauty! Now I want one! *LOL* Dang, seriously, I love him- yes, even without paint he is breath taking!

    42. Thanks! He's got a strong enough sculpt that I think he could pull off not having a face-up. I was so utterly chuffed to be able to get him. The work removing all that paint was totally worth it. 7 years is a long time to keep looking for a doll (at least I think it's a long time). See now why I said one of the new heads that Impl is working on would be perfect as Mkhai's partner?

I've got one other item that he could possibly wear right now but it would be VERY short on him. Like just barely covering his junk short. He also stole that sword from Jaiseki (who's from a completely different world) and might further yet steal the other sword Jaiseki has. Fine, Jaiseki wasn't using them and doesn't really need them but still (that almost begs a photostory right there). I can completely see Mkhai appropriating all the weapons I have.

    43. @Uminari, did it happen? Is she whole??

@Iron_Dog, *LOL* That makes sense since he's all about weapons! He is just amazing... so happy for you that you found him after all this time! (Yes, 7 years is a LONG time!) YAY! I am also very interested in the new stuff coming from Impldoll... I will be in so much financial pain!

    44. @chalyss A long time but worth the wait. I honestly think I appreciate him a little bit more this way since it was such a long time to getting him as well as all the work I put into him to get him back to his grey resin. I'm not sure if I'm bringing him in to work tomorrow as he needs a wig and nothing I have here is suitable (i.e. that he doesn't hate, thus the hairless shot).

The new head sculpts are just... the timing of them as far as creating them is fantastic for me and Mkhai. My wallet is less than thrilled. I'm purchasing a full doll towards the end of August that is going to hit my doll funds hard (mostly because the CAN$ sucks big time and the exchange is painful to say the least). But, I've been waiting 5 years to bring home this doll and due to exchange, I want to take advantage of the summer discount being offered as every little bit helps to offset the suck-tacular CAN$.

    45. A new discussion thread: Part 10 !

      :)
