IMPL dolls Star, Model and Idol Discussion thread part 13

Dec 18, 2018

    1. That is a shame, I stopped buying Charm Doll / Loongsoul because they switched to environmental resin only and I cant say Im interested in getting any Impldoll now that they are switching to that resin choice. I was really looking forward to the Devil man, the African male model, and the African female model.

I really dont like translucent resin in appearance and feel, the only exception being Iplehouse Glow resin (is it environmental?). I feel like it softens the features/detailing on the face.

I wish they would offer it as an option, even if it would cost premium.

    2. My problem is I don't even know what I got half the time :doh did they already send me environmental resin? What about my brown body? It's always nerve-wracking as it is! Ugh

    3. @IngieBee That's why I prefer to buy whole dolls!

      • x 1
    4. I have 2 dolls in environmental resin (BBD & JeiDoll) and they are lovely with that sort of dewy glow. However, if I wanted to get them jointed hands (I don't, but as an example...) matching the resin would take on an epic quest of Holy Grail with a side order of unobtanium while riding a rainbow unicorn.

I'm not a face-up artist but you could probably blush an enviro resin head to work with a normal resin body. Going the other way, however, wouldn't be a thing I don't think because of the glow-y sort of quality of the enviro resin I've seen/handled/own. The enviro resin would probably work for the doll I'll order soon but I agree that it would be nice if they offered it as a choice to customers. Most especially if they were buying a body to go with a previously purchased head from them.

    5. Yah, I think I better write to Alice's and make sure they use the old stuff.

In the meantime I received a beret and scarf from an Etsy dealer in Russia and it's so cute! I put it on Aurora but it's not really meant for her :)

    6. oh well, i see everyone is bussy with new dolls, skin colours, and e.t.c and me, im thinking to open etsy shop as i enjoyed to make t-shirts with prints for my big guys as they are similar to EID misuremens. hope so it will work and i will get them out to lovely dolls. but impldoll boys so big, its hard to make something for them not from strech fabric....
@IngieBee your girl with hat and scarf so lovely... Really autumn retro girl :-)

      • x 2
    7. I thought Impl already used environmental resin, at least for everything with a bit of color in it? Environmental resin is sandable and none of my impls have seam lines. Honestly, I love how environmental resin looks, and from what I've read, it's less toxic for the people working with it, so it's win-win in my book

      • x 1
    8. Thanks Anita, it doesn't quite work with a goddess gown, but she was the closest doll of the right size...LOL. Good luck with the shop, make sure you put the info in your profile :)

If that is true, i won't have to worry. I just want Plaice to have a matching body. After giving him a Faceup, I totally fell in love, he's so cute!!!

      • x 1
    9. Aaaaaannnnnndddd my eye molds arrived, and I learned that the resin I bought takes 24 hours to get hard and up to 76 hours to fully cure! LOL, I'm not a patient person!!!

Aaaaaaannnnnnddd I found my Mod Podge and finally started on my first wig! I must have bought that stuff a year ago, then misplaced it, Ugh! But anyway, it is Eclipse that gets the first try at a wig :D

      • x 2
    10. @IngieBee there are other types of things you can use for the eyes.

UV resin/nail gel is one that apparently takes only 5-7 minutes but you do need to use a UV nail lamp to cure it. Amazon has "kits" where you get a nail lamp, UV resin (clear), tints, glitter/gems/etc. for not a terribly large sum. I think some start as low as $40CAN. I can't comment on the quality of any of them but it is another option.

Additionally, I watched an eye making video on YouTube where the person used Mod Podge Melts to make the whites and finished the clear part of the eye with Dimensional Magic. It's basically like hot glue only Mod Podge. The eyes turn out slightly squishy like silicone eyes.

      • x 2
    11. I'm pretty committed to the resin and molds I bought due to the $$$ invested, however, I may be getting a uv resin for the cornia as it will mound up nicely and a lot of people use it for that. I can't wait to take these out of the molds! And I have a lot of ideas for experimentation :dance

      • x 1
    12. I'm not sure what material I'll be using when my moulds get here. I don't expect them for several weeks yet so I've got some lead time to figure myself out.

    13. Oh, you're also diving in on eye making (or maybe just a new way?). You really are a clever one @Iron_Dog ! I look forward to seeing what you make :D

I got an answer back from Alice's collections and they said Impldoll's environmental resin is the same as what they had for regular resin. Just like @Girrl said :). So fear not :D

      • x 2
    14. @IngieBee Yep. I have some specific eye designs I want/need and I can't find it so the logical thing to me is to try making my own. I've done similar things with making wigs for some of my guys. And of course the clothes most of my guys wear. I actually picked up a colourful selection of tiny embellishments and glitter at Dollarama yesterday to add to the stash I already have (because you can never have too much glitter, right?). I may also browse the nailpolish selection there as that's what I used for the eye blanks I had and it turned out swimmingly.

I'm pretty excited about the mould coming to me as it has multiple sizes and specifically has 6mm, which is one of the harder sizes to find in my experience. Wisp (Iple Creaa-J) takes 6mm and while the ones in his head right now are ok (I made them), they're not quite right. With any luck, I'll be able to make the eyes for Malachite (Ziv). I haven't ordered him yet but I'm planning on it soon.

Does anyone know what sort of production time Impl is working with right now? I figure my order might take a touch longer because I'm getting a custom colour (and face-up) but the colour is one that Impl produced for their Colourful Life Simon so maybe it's not going to be difficult for them to reproduce? Or at least a colour that's reasonably close to that original colour. I've already asked them about this and they said they could do it.

      • x 1
    15. Well I'm relieved to learn the resin change won't bollocks people's plans. And @Anita2006 I'd buy from your etsy shop, I'd enjoy buying street clothes for my big 'uns.

      @IngieBee She's a cutie!
      -
I must not be very picky because I don't care if things don't match. I'm willing to pay for body blushing if it's noticeable.

      • x 1
    16. Thank you @A Wee Tiefling. Yah, I'm with you, as long as I can fix it. I don't like blushing the body though because it tends to scratch up. I'd rather match the head. It's smaller and easier to care for. But a lot of people still blush their bodies to give them extra reality, or because the character needs it. I'm just too much of a klutz , LOL

      • x 1
    17. That's really good to know. Maybe they just mention it now because we are all concerned about the environment.

      • x 2
    18. I think they stopped offering the "imported" resin which I thought was the same as environmental xx which is why I kind of freaked out. BTW I think it is called environmental because it has uv protection in the mix??? I don't think it is less harmful to the environment??

      • x 1
    19. when i will create it i will let you know, @A Wee Tiefling :-) still have some custome orders for Xena costume and Sea Witch costume as well :-)
Its hard to find clothes for big guys, thats why im sewing myself, pants expessialy.
I love new girld from impldoll, hope so she is not limited and i could buy her one day :-)

      • x 1
    20. @Anita2006 , do you mean Leona? I have her head incoming :celebrate:cheer:dance
I got her as the event head with the Faceup in brown (how can you beat $38?). She's so pretty! I'll have to save up so she can have her own body though :doh

I'm just worried about the lower lashes which the artist paints as if the doll has a horrible eye infection :doh but at least she'll have a face when she gets here

      • x 2
    21. yes, Leona @IngieBee we will wait pictures of her when she arrives :-)

    22. May I have a moment of childish self pity?

(In a whining voice)Why does it always have to take so long? I want my dollies!!! :...(

      • x 2
    23. @IngieBee you are perfectly entitled to it haha. I have a layaway I'm paying off in October but I still feel all impatient.

      • x 1
    24. Month 15 for my Dollshe boy and no idea when I'll get him. Dream Valley is working a 6-month wait apparently so the body I ordered will likely be a January thing. And I'm going to place my Impl order soonish. My doll life is just one big waiting game right now.

      • x 1
    25. Ugh, Dolshe is for masochists, LOL. I think they are some of the prettiest dolls, but I simply do not have the stamina !

      • x 1
    26. if i want dollshe ussually looking second hand in market places, this is best for me, and always faster. one or two always show up in market time by time.

      • x 1
    27. Absolutely. However, I want a 55cm Saint in espresso ebony and the only way to get him at this point is direct from Dollshe because the 55cm is a brand new size (that hasn't even been completed apparently *sigh*) and I've never seen an espresso ebony sculpt period in the MP.

      • x 1
    28. It seems almost rude to interrupt everyone's laments about waiting times to gloat about an arrival, but my Aurora is here! :love
Sadly she has bit of a bone fracture (all four fingers from the right hand), but otherwise I am over the moon! Look at that gloriously sassy face (and please ignore the creepy blank beads I used for eyes, since I didn't order a proper pair yet. I'm not even sure it's better than staring into her head cavity):
[IMG]20190916_152532[1] by Jackie Hakala-Jackson, on Flickr

Regarding the broken fingers: do you guys think it's worth it to try and get a replacement? They're glued back on for the moment, and there will eventually be jointed hands to replace the original ones anyway, so if there's a chance that getting a replacement is going to cost me shipping etc. I'd just as soon not go through the hassle.

      • x 3
    29. She's lovely! I would contact them about the damage. If the replacement id free, take it. If it costs too much, you can decline. At least they might wrap the next dolls they ship a bit better!

      • x 3
    30. I agree with @nancy_schroeder_ca you should let Impl know that her fingers were damaged in transit (with possibly a photo to show the damage). That helps them on their end to make sure that the dolls are packed well for their trip to their owners. Impl seems pretty good with customer service and they'd likely appreciate knowing.

      • x 3
    31. @With-a-curl Aurora is such a beautiful sculpt. Her jawline is strong, and cheekbones give her a strong personality :love. Congratulations :D

So I'm trying to make my first wig, a hard cap, and I just realized how bulbous impl heads are! The cap can't come off the head because the edges are smaller and can't pass over the rest of the head :doh

    32. @nancy_schroeder_ca & @Iron_Dog
Thanks, I'll start emailing :) let's see where it gets me.

And yes, the head is quite big, no clue how I'm going to deal with it myself as I was also planning a hardcap. @IngieBee Would it help to incorporate some metal wire in the wig? As in, you'd make the wig large enough to come off, but put wire near the edges so you could bend it ever-so-slightly to lay it flush when it's on?

      • x 1
    33. You could make a cut up the back and a littld fine velco tab to close it once it's on.

      • x 1
    34. I was going to say, maybe I'll just cut it and tack it down when I put it on as I've found that hot glue is totally safe on resin, except:

Dang Nancy, that's a brilliant idea!!!

      • x 1
    35. I swear I leave this thread for five minutes and miss hours of conversation!
      -
@With-a-curl good luck getting replacement hands. Jointed hands always look cool when they're sized right and move right. Also YAY Aurora twins! Mine will arrive in November likely so we'll see how she survives her journey. Can't wait to see yours finished.
      -
@IngieBee I promised myself if I got a new (better paying) job for my birthday I'd be treating myself to my Tony to hell with the wait. I'm getting my wish, though the wait is def agonizing. I wasn't sure I would be able to jump on the event this year but lo! Fate wants me to make more money to buy more dolls.

      • x 1
    36. @A Wee Tiefling Hurray for having the funds to buy dolls! I recently got a parttime job in addition to studying fulltime, so that should carry me through the ordering of eyes and wigs and all that.

And good news, Impl will send me a new hand and even a forearm (since there is also minor chipping of the wrist socket)!

      • x 2
    37. Impl is great :)

Except that they don't do next day deliveries :shudder:abambi::whee:

    38. Hi folks, just wanted to chime in here with some info we've received from IMPL. They are still offering their old resins. I can't imagine it's dealer-only, but we'd phrased the question in such a way that it pertained to dealer orders and they told us that we'd have to tell them that we want the old resin for them to make it in it. They haven't given us any insight about what the new resins are.

      • x 2
    39. ACBJD said that the "environmental resin" is the same as their regular resin, of course we can never know for sure, but It seemed like they were clear with each other?

      "Thank you for your patience.
Impldoll said actually their original resin is also environmental resin :), their new resin's color and feeling won't be changed, they will be the same as original resin."

BTW, it's their patience with me that should be thanked, I've changed orders and asked questions out the wazoo! LOL

    40. I missed a HEAP! Crap!

Congrats on your new girl, @With-a-curl!! She looks so statuesque right now! Absolute Perfection!

    41. I'm slowly waking up from hobby hibernation, so please be patient with me, guys!

I did see all those broken fingers in your arrival gallery, @With-a-curl. Impl's really nice about replacement parts though, hopefully you'd be able to obtain what you need without any trouble. Hopefully that didn't dampen your doll experience too much; she's going to be lovely, I would think!

I haven't read far back yet, but re: environmental resin, I did notice that my Idolman FGB and Starwoman MGB have suspiciously translucent hands. This shows it pretty well. I have several non-glow Iplehouse resins and one Granado resin sample (plus one from an independent Russian artist), all of which look more opaque than Impl. It hasn't bugged me so far, though.

Oh, and my Starwoman MGB's secondary occupant/head is finally back from the faceup artist! Iplehouse PG is waaaaay off Impldoll RS, but the resin matching service was impeccable.

    42. Congrats on getting your head back, she really does look convincingly like the same person in another 'mode'.
And the parting on that wig is amazing in how natural it looks, it'd almost convince me to try my hand at ventilating (assuming that's how you made it?).

      • x 2
    43. I totally agree with @With-a-curl that wig is amazing! Also, just saying in case you want to try this too, or to let you know I'm going to try this soon, so you can look forward to a post by me, LOL, but see how the upper arm doesn't really fit into the secondary shoulder socket? It's not deep enough. I'm planning on dremeling out the socket so it sits deeper. I think it'll give the joint a smoother appearance and close up the distance of the shoulder width a fraction. The danger is if it was done on purpose because the socket wouldn't move otherwise, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, LOL

    44. I've been mostly lurking here as of late, as I haven't really done much with my Impls (or the rest of my resin crew, to be honest) to justify posting on here really. All the lovely incoming Impls have been a treat to see (apologies for not complimenting individually on each one, because that could take me all day).

I've especially have been admiring your girl @AntarelNefertili with her two lovely faceupped heads—and the MGB body she's on. With that event that's currently going on, it's making me want to take advantage of it to upgrade my OC (Bernice) onto the MGB. The body's posing would suite my girl perfectly.

I'm not really sure if my custom color dolls are in that newer environmental resin or not, but I have noticed more of a glossy sheen to their resin versus my normal real skin girl. To be honest, the difference doesn't really bother me. I'm content as long as the resin is sturdy and easy to work with, and isn't easily stained, yellowed or damaged.

I recently chose to redo my Azalea's faceup, as I wasn't really satisfied with her last one. I haven't had an opportunity to take photos yet, but I'll share them here once I do :thumbup

      • x 3
    45. @With-a-curl Thank you! Yep, it's a hand-ventilated wig. :D I did a project journal on it, and it took several tries and tons of wasted hairs before I managed to get that final result.

@IngieBee Do tell us if dremeling improves the over-all look and poseability! I agree about the gapping on the armpit section; it could get a bit annoying on certain angles (hence I'm spamming my girl with tops that serve to hide it). I'm not sure if you'd also have to take off a bit of the torso to account for the change. We owe you a lot if you get around to the challenge!

@jade-eyed-cat Awwww thank you! I recently fixed the tension on her strings too, because she came with the usual Hulk-did-the-work Impldoll stringing that caused her to snap at anything and everyone. (Injuring my finger in an attempt to change her heads was the last straw.)

All my Impls have that sheen to them, so I assume they're all environmental resin (without me even knowing). Not sure if it's also due to the slight translucency effect, but a local BJD friend (the one who now owns my rehomed Impldoll Azalea) had remarked that Impldolls seem to catch light differently from the more opaque resins. I've read in the older threads that environmental and French resins are difficult to hybrid with the normal ones, but I haven't had an issue there yet.

      • x 1
    46. @AntarelNefertili I found the project journal about five minutes after I made that post :doh Your dedication is jealousy-inducing, haha.

Btw, does the MGB shoulder joint stick out more on the right side than on the left, or is that a trick of the angle? I've found Impl's single joints have pretty obvious assymetry.

      • x 1
    47. Can anyone tell me if male EID clothing will fit the male Idol body?

    48. It's mostly just the angle, IMO, and the fact that my girl was wearing her off-shoulder dress a tad asymmetrically. XD But I do know that my Idolman FGB's knee peanuts don't look the same, for some reason.

And @Reslie yes, I've successfully given my Idolman EID clothes (pants + jacket). He's on the first-gen body though; not sure how good the fit will be for the newer versions.

      • x 1
    49. @AntarelNefertili Your girl's looking mighty fine, that faceup is so great! Her expression really amuses me. Also, that wig! I remember some of the process photos and dayum! I will not make wigs. I can't beat that.
Also I agree with the comment about resin translucency...My Delia (who desperately needs a faceup) aaaalmost matches her body...but the big uncanny valley bit is the sheen to her face BUT NOT HER NECK. It throws me in certain lights. Like she's got a heavy layer of makeup on.

I finally sucked it up and ordered my Tony. Eleventy million years to go.

      • x 2
    50. Layers of sealant (MSC especially) go a long way in concealing that sheen:thumbup

Also, I emailed BJDivas about setting up a layaway for the MGB body + head for the event. Just waiting to hear back from them to complete the order process.

      • x 3
    51. Yes, that is an amazing wig, @AntarelNefertili , and to put so much effort into testing before committing takes a huge amount of self control. I would have dove in and messed up then given up!

so this is my John, his face up is not perfect but i did it myself as modifications as well, and now when he got his permament wig - did myself from very soft mohair i can say he is perfect for me :-) meet Louis Conde

    54. @A Wee Tiefling Thank you! It's kinda ironic that she became all the more naughty-looking (sorry, Adhara) when she took her warpaint off. But maybe that's the point. :sneaky Ahaha, that kind of wigmaking is TEDIOUS. I doubt I could even take commissions for it because, man, 3-5 months for an SD-sized wig? That's the average BJD production time for most companies, lol. Congratulations on finally taking the dive, tho! Looking forward to seeing more Tony spam in the future, mehehe.

@IngieBee It's really a challenge of self-control to not poke at the glue before it's fully dry. :aeyepop: I guess the "You can't send her to the faceup artist until you finish the goddamn wig" is also a motivation. And aaaaah Rainman. I really adore that artist's recent work. I had to stop looking at that IG page when July was revealed, because it may cause my wallet to shrivel up and die!

@jade-eyed-cat That's so true; I would have gone for a full body blush to hide that sheen. Unfortunately, good luck protecting it from chipping. :sigh Fingers crossed for your upcoming purchase! :D

@Anita2006 Why hello, Louis Conde! I know how time-consuming it is to faceup beards, I salute you for your patience!

    55. @Anita2006 John looks swashbucklingly handsome! (Like the 3 musketeers)

@AntarelNefertili sorry for posting in the wrong spot! I'd say the wigs were well worth it!

    56. @AntarelNefertili i like how he looks, beard lips, his view. it was chalenge for me do make him look like human from vampire and do something that lips would not look like duck :-) i think i did good job with him.

@IngieBee oh yes, and i have hat for him as well, it was hard to look any wig to be more natural, more human looking so i did mohair wig myself, and his face up even not perfect but im happy how he looks :-) oh, by character he is French baron who knows hia rigth to crown is legit.
