IMPL dolls Star, Model and Idol Discussion thread 14

Sep 24, 2019

    1. Ah, I see, OK , thanks again :) I gotta try this soon as those nails scream to be painted, LOL

Oh, and I found it, the perfect design for her, and yet it *might* be simple enough for me to do:

I just realized that one of the charms to these nails is the velvet texture. I wonder how that might look on a doll?

    2. As far as EMS goes, I had a doll sent to me from Russia a while back and he took forever to get to me. He was travelling within Russia for about 10 days and after he left the country, he was 53 days getting to me in Canada (he arrived July 19th). It was a looooong journey but that was also when flight restrictions were only starting to loosen for many countries and were still pretty tough to find/get flights for shipping purposes.

I've just purchased another doll & head (my addiction strikes again!), ironically from the same seller (I'm apparently buying her collection one doll at a time as they're #4 & #5) and they were posted yesterday so we'll see how long it takes. I know packages from Russia typically spend at least a week touring the country before leaving so we'll see how this goes.

    3. @IngieBee I've had a recent order from Dollmore, and it was sent via EMS. Although it took longer than usual, Korea to Philippines didn't take a month. The tracking took longest while waiting for a flight out of Seoul. Methinks the trend is for them to load up as much as they can with what limited flights that they have. With regards to your doll's nails, I think this thread may help you with attaining that non-glossy, velvety texture. The thread is for the lips, but could easily be adjusted for nails.

Guórén has his hair back, yay! It's a relief he finally has a wig that doesn't look oversized on his head (he's one of those notoriously petite Granado sculpts that are a pain to find wigs for).

    4. I don't remember how Luts sent a recent order (clothes, no doll), but I got the order within about 2-3 weeks of placing it. Some countries seem to process mail/shipping faster than other countries right now so it's a bit of a jump ball I think.

    5. I also just ordered a pair of jeans from Russia, and it only took 3 days to get to Chicago. Unfortunately Chicago in my opinion is the slowest to process things. Happily though, it got through in a day or so and it's on it's way to me. If he gets here by Wednesday it will have only taken a week!

@AntarelNefertili , thanks for the link, I'll go check it out :)

@Iron_Dog there are a LOT of Russian members (Ukrainian and Polish too) with incredible talent here! They knit, they sew, they sculpt and they paint, oh my! But you probably bought some that need face ups, as you have a unique crowd :thumbup. Congrats, maybe you can sneak photos of some of them in here with an Impl, or we can look through your flickr (you have a flickr, right?). Memory of a goldfish again :doh

    6. @IngieBee Yes, I have a Flickr. The newest additions to my crew are a Spirit Doll Dark that has been HEAVILY modded (his head only) to resemble something of a cyborg. The other head is a Miracle Doll Asael head that was face-uped as part of a competition. So, fortunately they both have face-ups (and are wildly unique). The Asael will need a body *sigh* but I'm not sure of when that'll happen. I'm hopeful for a fast delivery but not holding my breath on it.

    7. Oooh, they sound so cool! Congrats, and may your wait be surprisingly short!

    8. OK, I'm simply too jittery to draw inside the lines, LOL, BUT otherwise I think it worked!

BTW, her jointed hands are a smidge lighter than Impldoll pink.

This has totally inspired me, I know exactly how I want to dress her!

BTW, Resinsoul boy hands are exactly the same size as the Impl Star or Idol girl hands. They are very effeminate hands, though they don't have long nails. The wrist is still slightly bigger, but I think it looks great on.

    9. @IngieBee her fingernails are fantastic! The look is perfect!

    10. @IngieBee stop trying to sell me jointed hands, it won't work (it's working too well)

      • x 1
    11. @IngieBee that's an absolutely gorgeous paint job! And I'm going to have to second Tiefling here, because toure doing a fantastic job selling me on the hands. My girl does need to be able to carry a sword...

    12. Oh honestly, I can't remember buying these, it's so weird. I did buy a pair for my boy with short nails, I just don't remember buying these, but I must have bought them with this girl in mind. But this particular company is expensive, and like I said, the Resinsoul ones are less than 1/2 the price and beautiful, and work well, I need to take pictures of those on my girl next, but I'm painting them before I put them on, LOL. $38-$42 depending on color. They are exactly the size of Impl star/idol girl hands :)

    13. Oooh, my netting arrived at the local post office this evening, so I'm hoping I'll get it tomorrow! I can try out lace wig making then as I got my hooks and hair already. The question is, should I do it with an embroidery hoop or wrapped around a ball??!! Ugh! decisions decisions!

      • x 1
    14. I took some time to reply, whoops!

@IngieBee Those nails are to die for! I'd really want to jointed-hands-ify everyone in the crew eventually, but I may have to go with a company with color-matching service because Impl Real is really driving me crazy with its lack of matches. Re: your wigmaking, methinks there's nothing wrong with you trying out a small patch on an embroidery hoop first just so you get the hang of the method. (And also for you to understand how the hair falls depending on the direction of the ventilation.)

Dormant-Adhara in vahvahvoom mode again! Heh, to consider that her bust size is "only" Medium. If she went any larger, I'd hate to think of the back pain it entails.

    15. LOL, yah @AntarelNefertili , love the very few bodies out there that do small and natural breasts. But the cost isn't worth it for me as I always have clothes on them. And the better the sculpt, the more :chomp: and I think Impl does some great bodies as is :) I really want to try doing some lace wig making, but I'm afraid I can't get comfortable (speaking of back pain) and so I'm waiting for a little lap stand thingy to arrive so I can sit comfy in a chair and work with 2 hands. But I'm in no rush, I have so much going on anyway. My goal is to make everyone winter clothes, so I'm getting on that :D

    16. I've been watching this thread for the longest time and finally can contribute! In planning my first Impldoll I've wanted a girl in either tan or brown resin, but then noticed that Impldoll changed their resin tones sometime in the last 1-2 years so all the comparisons from 2018 and earlier were all but useless :XD:

So, while completing another order with Clover Singing, I asked Christina for some resin samples from Impldoll, and they arrived recently. See them under the cut, maybe they'll help someone too :) I also have a photo with an assortment of different lighter resins if anyone's interested :)

    17. I LOVE the brown resin, it's my favorite from Impl. BUT I must admit, after the orange shock wore off on my Dylan tan, there is something quite nice about it. I think I got caught between the two colors. Dylan's head is very orange and his body, bought seperately, is more in the brown hue which makes no sense, but yah, not as orange. Though I love the brown best of all, and Real Skin nearly as much, I think my future Garza will be tan, it just seems to fit the personality I have for him. He'll be Hero Protagonist from Snow Crash and I think, though she has elf ears, LOL, my Aurora will be his Juanita. She is in brown skin. Problem is getting a Raven, as he is supposed to be huge, and Impldolls are already huge! The only thing I can think of is getting a Granado giant boy, what are they called??? LOL

      • x 1
    18. That would be the Titan body. It's so big that they need to ship it in 2 separate boxes.

    19. OMGosh, really @Iron_Dog?!! Amazing, It'll probably be too big for me to handle!

    20. @AntarelNefertili Is it wrong to shamelessly drool at Adhara's bosoms? I'll blame it on my dolls.
      -
I guess because all eight kajillion of my crew are MSD and have mostly tiny breasts I forget how tough it is to dress a bigger doll with larger attributes. I'm not too fussed with a mature female character who has a mature looking bustline, but I'm not thrilled with the torso joint on my muscle girl. She wears the hell out of a dress but can't sit worth a damn!

@Dei You have helped me feel glad I didn't go with a different tan...though my Tony is super orange I can deal with it because it's not dayglo and will definitely mellow with age. Digging on the brown if I can find the beans to shell more characters.

      • x 2
    21. @A Wee Tiefling do you engage the thigh joint? They have that style where you lift the thigh and shove it back behind the butt/hip. You can see the carve out on the end of the ball joint (not talking about the mobility joint, the actual thigh joint) If you don't engage it, yah, they fall back :P This is for the Star and Idol bodies, the MGB hasn't got this. Honestly though, it makes them super stable sitters :)

    22. @IngieBee Yeah, apparently the Titan is 12lbs of resin. There is a video on YouTube with someone talking about doll stuff and she has her Titan boy beside her and wow, he's a giant piece of resin. If you wanted taller and muscular but not ginormous, maybe ISO's 80 Class body?

    23. The character is supposed to be huge, with almost no neck, and muscular, LOL. Titan is perfect honestly, but maybe they'll make him in vinyl some day and save my back!!! LOL @Iron_Dog

    24. @A Wee Tiefling LOL well, definitely you're not alone (pic below under a spoilers tag because it's a little too hot to handle). Seconding what @IngieBee has said about the butt "ledges" for some of the bodies tho. My Idolman FGB has those too. My change of stringing method had made sitting him a little bit of a balancing act, but the ledges are a great help. The MGB's thigh peanuts have a tendency to roll around (a problem occurring in another of my dolls with the same kind of thighs), but once you get them positioned properly, she could still sit fine. And the leg mobility, awyeah, I love it!

    26. @IngieBee I feel stoopit, I have no idea how to engage the butt ledge. I can get her knees and elbows to position, but the thigh ledge doesn't catch...unless it's because she's in very difficult clothing to manouever her in.

@AntarelNefertili (fans self) wooooof, that's sensual AF.
      ---

I just realized these are both relevant to this thread so here we go, Kitten and Dante went urban adventuring. Kitten looked fantastic and Dante got way too close to moving machinery. I'm really looking forward to getting jointed hands for these guys...I reallllllly dislike Kitten's "tortured plea" hands.

I love Dante with his natural hair! He's really rocking the secret ducktail...

    27. What an awesome window/background! it looks as sophisticated as Kitten! and Dante looks as though he's ready for some parkour. I was just fiddling with my girl, to see what can go wrong with the leg. If the leg is twisted, of course, it won't work, but you should see the knee going in the wrong direction then. It helps to push the leg back toward her back to engage it??? I hope you can find a way to make it work :thumbup

    28. I just ordered my first impldoll(s), since I took advantage of the event. I also ordered an extra hea and will probably get the body later, mostly to see how well I like the star muscle body.

    29. The extra heads are what keep getting me in trouble! LOL, my order from Alices will include an Leona head and a Susu head from Doll family A I think. Need to get him a body, and she'll have to share for a while with my Azalea. And Plaice was an event head I got, and am waiting for his body ATM :)

    30. Everybody is sale-ing at me right now and I'm pathetically weak against resin. The only saving grace is that I don't know the exact shade of the incoming head I have (8 year old MD) so can't purchase a body yet and the other companies I want to purchase bodies from don't have a sale going on right now.

      • x 2
    31. This is why I try to buy complete dolls where possible. I've got enough weird/unconventional hybrids to make me tired of measuring necks. I'm actually pleased with Dante's proportions, considering how lanky and yellow his Model body is (or is it Star?) and I'm not in a hurry to get him blushed to match or reshelled onto a more attractive body. II should, but that's a $$$ proposal.
      --
@IngieBee That's no window, that's the pedestrian overpass nearby (with a lovely view towards midtown in the far distance). Dante would so do parkour were he real. Not me, I was terrified a train would come barrelling along and he'd fall onto the concrete below.

      • x 1
    32. @A Wee Tiefling Yeah, I generally buy full dolls, too, whenever possible because I don't like playing the match game. However, for the heads I need to hybrid bodies on, there was no option to buy a body for them. Oleander (Angel Toast Crow) and Qayin (BiDoll CS) were both produced as heads only and limited in number. The incoming MD head was limited to 50 worldwide and released 8 years ago so... yeah, finding his original body for sale in the colour I have is needle in a stack of needles time.

      • x 2
    33. Oh yah, now I see, LOL, I thought it was some elaborate window, LOL, I need to fix my eyes!

      • x 1
    34. To be fair, you can have issues matching the same resin colors from the same company, since there is not only yellowing, ut a few companies change up their resin tones over the years.

      • x 1
    35. @Meowjima Yeah, Soom is bad about that in my experience. I have 3 different Soom grey dolls from 3 different years and they're all different shades of grey. Even given age, they shouldn't look that different in tone. But, I've also got 2 Soom ebony dolls from different years and they're both the same colour. A friend of mine has 2 Soom tans from different years and they look nothing alike to the point that you'd think they were different colours. I've also got tan AoD boys and one has a body made several years after the head (which was kept in a box the whole time before I got his body) and there is a very slight difference in colour that's not even worth blushing to match.

      • x 1
    36. Also, once you start putting a faceup on, it often changes the tone of the resin. I have a company head where the blushing was so intense, the head was a completely different color! Not in the back, but the face.

    37. OMG, yes. Belial (SD Vito Berial) had the default face-up and while the underlying face-up was beautifully done, he was over-blushed to the point that he looked like he had the worst sunburn in the history of forever and needed to soak for a week in a tub of aloe. On a real person, that level of red would involve 2nd degree burns. I ended up having to send him out to be wiped and repainted. His resin is grey but his face was literally red-orange from the blushing.

    38. LOL, yup, know the feeling :D My Lydia, who is my NightElf, also has different color grey resin from head vs body. But it doesn't bother me. Poor love is still without clothing :doh She needs her suit of armor but I'm stumped as to how to go about doing it. But somebody in another thread recently did some cool work, different but I got ideas from it and will have to try them out :D

      • x 1
    39. I've seen that a lot, especially on dolls that have skintones that are not in the realm of human flesh tones.

    40. @A Wee Tiefling I feel your concern every time I have to do a photoshoot of the dolls in a risky location! I am always on high alert if the crew would have to do a setup on the edge of our balcony, because we are nearly 20 floors up. :o

I decided to do a decent group photo of the "active" -- that is to say, "currently not naked, body-less, or faceup-less" -- members of the crew. I'm currently working to finish preexisting clothes projects because really, most of my other dolls are just borrowing clothes from my favorite two dolls, who are using Impldoll bodies. I still can hardly believe it: they are the most tanned of the bunch, and they're only RealSkin, not Tan or Brown.

    41. @IngieBee @Meowjima I've also noticed a difference between opaque and translucent resins too, especially when it comes to yellowing. My Delia/spiritdoll hybrid has a different grain to her resin head than body, so that up close it's very noticeable. Comparable to a human wearing a lot of makeup, or stage-quality makeup (subtle but there).

@AntarelNefertili I love your crew! They make a great group portrait! Heh, Dante had an accident that day and now I am the only one who notices there's a microscopic chip in his eyebrow. But I can't fix it until I get a respirator. Ugh. Silly clumsy Tiefling!
I've noticed that as my dolls yellow/oxidize, the ones who are tan and brown stand out more against their current backdrop. I like it because they're meant to be different races but it also kinda underlines the inhuman whiteness of "normal" resins.

    42. Re: the great photography on this thread, I must admit I used to think taking pictures has got to be easy, but since photographing dolls became a thing, I learned it's quite difficult and requires attention to detail, which I kinda lack.

      • x 1
    43. Emailed ACBJD about swapping out the freebie for a discount. Nope. I doubt that she emailed Impldoll, but I doubt that Impldoll would answer differently anyway.

Too bad. Maybe next year, there will actually be a sale. (Or maybe I'll have Marketplace access by then, and join a group order.)

    44. I didn't even think of checking the MP for a group order. I do kind of regret choosing my Freebie. It was supposed to be a sister for my Aurora but only after ordering did I realize she has a horn and ears.

    45. @Meowjima che k in with them, you may still be able to change it??

    46. @IngieBee I'm hoping to make it work, since I really do love the head sculpt. she'll just always have to have bangs/long hair.

    47. Ooops, I was thinking of another person's issues, LOL, I remember @Meowjima. I wrote something previously that made no sense. I hope you can fix her up so you can't tell there were horns :)

    48. I have a vague inclination to shell a character, but he's got a difficult body to shell. Has anyone had any luck with Impl blending bodies for them - male chest and arms on an otherwise female body? If I do decide to try to shell him, it'd be this boy here - he's absolutely adorable in Sim form, but not the sort of adorable doll companies seem interested in sculpting :sigh

    49. I admittedly haven't posted in here in a while (didn't have any updates to share really).

Well...my updated Bernice on the MGB body arrived maybe a month or so back, and I just got her faceupped a couple weeks ago. I'd attempted a few times to get her out for photo-ops, and only just yesterday managed to be successful with it.

Had to do some color corrections, as my camera has this tendency to add a bluish tint to all the photos I take. Also played around with more skin texture on this newer faceup version, which got a bit washed out originally. Silly camera:XD:

The MGB body, hmm—what is there to say? It posed really nice straight out of the box, although I'm still getting used to those thigh joints. One leg in particular has this habit of aiming the knee (and the rest of the leg) inward for a crossed knee look when sitting, or a very awkward looking pose when not doing so (and also while standing). I've had to play around with it quite a bit to minimize that particular issue. Otherwise I really like the extra poseability versus the original SGB (currrent curvy) Star body she was originally on.

      • x 5
    50. Oh gosh, @Girrl the males are just SO MUCH bigger than the females. I don't have a male model body to compare with, but that might work somehow, but I honestly don't know.

Wow, I really love your Bernice's faceup, @jade-eyed-cat . I never saw her with red lips, always natural, and frankly I think I like your girl's lips best! Now I'm tempted to get one.... again, No! No No No No NO! I must stop, seriously!

      but she's so darn cute!!!!!

I'm making a sloper pattern for my MGBs using my Lydia and she seems to seriously enjoy being naked. And as such, you can see the joints and pose them easily. I can imaging the more clothing the harder it gets. I think that happens to get worse the more joints you have to deal with. It seems there is ALWAYS a trade off. I'm going to have to remember that, when I get my next doll who is on layaway. I was disappointed to realize her thighs had no mobility joint. I should have known that but my memory sucks, LOL. Anyway, I'll bet this will make her easier to deal with in pants (a least I hope so)

      • x 1
    51. The mobility joint in the thigh is nice but I'm not feeling the love for the upper arm mobility joint in the model boy body. I just don't see the purpose of it and if the pieces aren't lined up perfectly, you get this weird "jog" in the resin. I'm contemplating gluing the damn thing together so I don't need to deal with that annoyance.

      • x 3
    52. I'm really really into getting Cherise but couldn't find any owner or blank photos, so I emailed Impldoll. Maybe someone will find it useful as well :)

    53. @Girrl maybe you'd have good luck with a muscle girl body and modding the chest? I don't know that the male and female chest are interchangeable in the larger sizes... Otherwise there are other OT companies that (clothed) share a very similar silhouette. I could get some pics of my model boy next to my muscle girl so you can see.

@jade-eyed-cat She reminds me of a fem!Mal Reynolds. I love her whole style, but her faceup is amazing.

    54. @IngieBee and @A Wee Tiefling - I was thinking along the lines of muscle star girl arms and legs, regular star girl belly piece, and model boy chest piece. Its all theoretical at this point though, who knows if it'll even work

    55. @Girrl Would modding off the boobs be a better option? Or are you after the breadth of shoulders from the boy chest? The muscle girl arms into the boy chest probably wouldn't be difficult. Maybe a little gaping in the shoulder socket? My concern would be the boy chest on the girl torso and the issues of getting the two parts to fit together. I'd assume the boy part would be a good bit larger/wider at the joint than the girl one and you'd have some noticeable gaping there, probably most visible at the sides.

I'm talking out of my ass on this though as I've no girls at all and am basing this solely on seeing friends female dolls next to male dolls.

    56. A little bit of apoxie can bridge the gap if it’s small! I’ll get a pic of my wacky hybrid (impl arms, iplehouse chest, Soom body) that I had to do that with. It doesn’t look too off either if it’s not a huge gap

    57. Apoxy/dremel can correct a world of things with dolls *nods*. I have zero experience with either from a personal perspective as far as doing it myself so I'm only making best guess remarks.

I do have modded dolls but I either sent them out to have the mods done or they came to me 2nd hand with the mods done by previous owners. I'm too chicken to do any of that stuff myself so leave it to the professionals. My in-coming boy (OT for this thread) has a LOT of mods done to his head. I'm pretty excited to get him home so I can see the mods in person as they looked really awesome in the sales pics. The creativity and skills of the people in this hobby never ceases to amaze me.

    58. I just got into modding this year, but I've found it's really fun (and remarkably easier than I thought). It's mind-blowing how intricate some of the things people do are (I'd need way better Dremel bits and steadier hands). There's a bunch of stuff I'd be way more inclined to commission though, so I'm not as much an expert as a lot of the modders I follow

    59. That's where mixing and matching different sizes comes into play: the waist circumference of the star female body is 19cm and the circumference of the model boy body is 18.5. Both bodies flare up from the waist to the chest joint, up to 30cm for the girl and 25cm for the guy - and I'm willing to bet the bulk of that 5cm difference is in the bust. As @Chameleon mentioned, a little apoxie can help smooth things out, but I suspect it will be a fairly decent fit overall
