General 10-20cm Blind Box BJD Discussion

Sep 27, 2023

    1. Ah, I missed seeing that!

    2. Thanks for all these updates @namika

I agree with @nattherat, I think open eyes design would mean inset eyes, but we might need to wait for prototypes to know for sure on that. Design work is really cute though, plus I do like the idea of a little pet.

    3. Ooh, that is cute!

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but Kikagoods have been sharing more promotional pictures of the Weird Nightmare series! I am really liking the look of each of these, and it is leading to a genuine wondering if this would be one I try to get the full box of... Really not sure...

      • x 2
    4. I’ve been having the exact same thought. Even my favorite blind box lines so far have had at least one or two dolls I genuinely don’t care for, and usually a couple I’m not extremely interested in. But I loved all the designs they showed before, and every picture of the actual dolls is even more charming. I really might need them all haha

    5. Waittt the outfits for your Bonnie’s are so cute! Where did you grab them?

    6. The maker is on taobao but sadly they have discontinued these! A few resellers around still have stock, but the uniforms aren't being made anymore. :...( Or at least that's the news 42agent gave me.

Unfortunately I no longer have a link either. I'd cancelled my order when 42agent gave me the news, because it meant they couldn't buy the uniforms I actually wanted. I can't even link you to resellers on Aliexpress, because at this point they've blocked almost all non-app traffic in the UK and I can't access anything on there anymore.

So sorry that's not a very useful reply. I think you can probably find some resellers, just search for "ob11 wizard clothes" or similar. In general if you want to find good clothes for these dolls, search for "ob11 clothes".

    7. Aaaa at least that makes so much sense on why I’ve been having trouble finding them. Thank you for the reply though, I’ll still try and keep my eye out, they’re just so ridiculously cute. Fingers crossed!

    8. So it turns out the whole 1/4 thing wasn't correct, they really are 1/12! I guess Hermeow mistyped or their tweet has been edited, I'm not sure.
Kikagoods opened a preorder for them here, and they're approx 7.1". They're more 1/10, stopping just 2cm short of 1/8, so they're a strange scale. We may have hit the point where there's enough 1/10ish ones for a thread. :XD:

I think I'll probably pass on these, as I don't think they'll fit in with my other dolls, but I love "Spirit", and she's the one I'd want if I were to get one!

      • x 2
    9. Ah, or I might have misunderstood Hermeow's tweet! Looks like the '1/4' might have meant one of four tweets about it... :sweat

      • x 2
    10. PSA on the 10,000 Escape Plans 1/12 doll series - people have started receiving them and posting images on Kikagood's Discord server, and... lots of QC issues. Bad joints, staining (if you order them, get the anti-staining outfits 100%), split heads, and poorly-fitting parts.
If you ordered them, check them carefully when you receive them.
If you decide to order a "confirmed" doll from AliExpress, you're probably going to end up with one of the returned badly-QC'd dolls.

      • x 4
    11. Oh no… mine is coming in the mail soon. That will be so heart breaking if it is, they were so cute

      • x 1
    12. Finally ordered one at random and... Of course it's the color combination I least wanted (yellow and orange), she's pretty and it's not her fault, it's actually a documented neurological thing. But I wanted her to see how her joints worked so she'll be staying.

      • x 1
    13. Oh no! Bummer to hear that about the 10,000 Escape Plan dolls. I ordered mine through Jane's Dolland, I wonder when they'll ship... I got the whole set. I suppose I don't mind if they stain in places I can't see, really. Looking forward to seeing 'em soon.

      • x 2
    14. I believe there's been a delay. The first shipment was for domestic orders. People who received them put up a huge outcry, so the manufacturer is apparently reworking them. There's hope! But also - a longer wait. Sorry. :sigh

    15. Do you have a link to their reviews? I’m so curious to see photos/ video from people that aren’t kikagoods (who is trying to sell them).

      • x 1
    16. Update, and it's not good. Other dealers were contacted, and they are saying that the manufacturer is not being responsive. If you don't like the dolls you receive, the dealers are recommending refusing and returning the dolls.
There's a discord MarleyGoods Official: post here showing screenshot convo with Superbuy agent.

Pictures of 10,000 Escape Plans defects on Kikagoods Discord server here, here, and here.

    17. @MaleficentMrsofEvil: Thanks for all the photos! That really is some horrible quality control (or rather complete lack of, it seems) ... Has the manufacturer ever responded or really just disappeared?

      • x 1
    18. From what I'm reading, the manufacturer is not responding to complaints. Dealers (including Kikagoods) are recommending that you either accept the dolls as is (no refunds; not even partial), or return them.
I haven't ordered any, so I can't speak from personal experience. When dressed, they look really cute. It's just when you undress them that problems start to emerge.

    19. Yessssss! I was hoping these were inset eyes dolls, I'm so glad they are!
All the mature sculpts being teased are great and all (genuinely), but aren't going to fit with my collection given that the Penny's Box Centaurs set the style trend for what I have. So it's great to see some lil ones again!

Pretty sure the green cat is gonna be my pick for this set. :D

    20. Picture tax of Lanlan! I love the Kukaka Insect Cafe series so much, I really hope a series 2 happens at some point.
      (As usual, from my insta)

Although the lace and ribbon don't really fit the aesthetic I am going for with my collection, I've ended up using them as bracelets because I damaged Lanlan! :sweat I left her without her hands attached for a good while, which meant I left the s-hooks hooked to the wrist. Turns out there was enough tension in the elastic that over time they left quite an obvious dent in the plastic, whoops! I could probably try to boil it out but... I think Lanlan is just going to accessorise with bracelets. :XD:

    21. That is a lot of issues. Thanks to @MaleficentMrsofEvil for sharing the images. I hope people are able to get a refund or new product!

      • x 2
    22. @nattherat Ah the photo looks amazing! I have to agree with really loving this series. I hope a new one happens as well.

      • x 1
    23. I posted these Penny's Box beast series prototypes in the 1/8 thread before reading more to find out they're about 15cm, so... regardless of what they are getting labelled as, they belong in this 10-15cm thread! :XD: They're just one of the very tall ones similar to the deer.

I am absolutely getting that hooved one, I think she's a sheep? My very first little blind box BJD was the first series Antu sheep, so you can bet that I'm going to get her new and improved sequel.

I've also been very excited for more beast dolls in general. There's not enough of them! A certain company that can't be named made a beast series, and it's been killing me that there wasn't a series like that from anyone else, with the exception of perhaps Bon Bon Galaxy, but those are resin and about 3-4x more expensive. So glad Penny's Box is making one!

(As an aside: I think splintering off into some 1/10 thread for the taller dolls coming out is probably a bad idea, the 1/8 thread is already a bit too splintered, so I'll change the title and stuff of this thread. I might change the 1/6 thread in the same way, does that sound like it makes sense/would be good?)

      • x 3
    24. I'm just grateful that you are (1) willing to keep track of all of these - PHEW! There's so many! Thank you so much! and (2) willing to organize these threads.
Consider me a passive enthusiast who is just delighted that you're managing these, and I'll be happy to post wherever you decide we should.

The Penny's Box mock-ups are darling. Seeing them in UV resin has me torn. I love the price of the plastic dolls. But mannnn, they would be adorable in resin (but also way more expensive).

      • x 1
    25. Ah thank you so much! That actually means a lot to hear, especially since... yes, sometimes it is actually "work" to keep on top of the threads and formatting! :XD: But knowing that it's helpful and enjoyed makes it worth it.

I've now updated this thread to be the 10-20cm Blind Box BJD thread, which I think will suit us all better now that the trends in blind box BJDs have changed as they have, and they're going towards a more mature/taller look. It'd be silly for the Penny's Box Antu Beast series, which is clearly a direct sequel to other Antus, to have been technically "off-topic" due to being 16cm instead of 15cm! And the mermaids were always here too, and I think they're something like 17cm from head to fin.
So time for the thread and criteria to adapt for the changing times! 10-15cm made more sense a year or so ago, when all the dolls were 14cm generally.

I just updated the 1/6 thread and changed it to 21-30cm too. 21-23cm is the sweet spot of 1/6 by Azone/Obitsu standards (even though hmm, lol), and there's more dolls coming out in that whole range in general, so it makes sense to broaden that topic rather than keep splintering things out.

    26. The Penny’s Box beast series look adorable. I’m also really glad that the Ninizee series have inset eyes. I love all the series that Simon Toys have put out thus far and the Ninizee are looking super cute.

I had some of the 10000 escape plans dolls on order but decided to cancel my order after seeing all the quality issues.

@nattherat I think it’s a good idea to expand the scope of the thread, thank you so much for managing it.

    27. My 10k escape plan blind box has already shipped and on its way, fingers crossed it’s not as bad as some the defect photos shown, but we shall see. If I remember I’ll try to post photos of whoever I get and if it has any problems.

      • x 1
    28. I am really liking the trend towards the taller bodies. I think they might pose a little easier? The new Penny's Box bodies do look amazing. Will be looking forward to seeing the finished product!

    29. More picture tax:
Lanlan is always excited to rush on ahead. I just love my whole little magic school crew!

I've had two more on order for what feels like ages now. It's not actually been that long, I'm just impatient. :XD: A UFDoll Doremi series and a Come4Free Mitian Forest series. I have yet to pick out which Penny's Box deer I want - they're all great!

    30. @nattherat Every time I see one of your photos, I smile. They look amazing!

    31. Thanks @werepuppy !

Here I am bringing another, because... the beginnings of my diorama now exists!
      (As ever, from insta)
They're in a fantasy magic school, so the time period is very loosey-goosey, but it's intended to be mostly Victorian-looking in terms of real-world aesthetics (there's no lore here, it's just a vibe). Long-term I want to make or buy them all sorts of accessories, have their desks covered in slates and/or tiny little desktop cauldrons. I'm also going to move them into a new piece of furniture I'll be assembling on likely Saturday or Sunday, where they'll have a lot more room and won't have to be quite so crushed together.

In the meantime though, the few that can sit at desks look so cute at them!! :D Going all in on them like this definitely stops them from being "cheap" anymore, but it's also way more satisfying and easier than trying to sort out props for any of my larger dolls. These are probably the most fun I've had with BJDs in years!

      • x 7
    32. @nattherat That is looking amazing! I meant to ask: where did you get the little uniforms for them all?

      • x 1
    33. @werepuppy Hehe thank you! I spoke about the uniforms on the previous page of this thread when someone else asked;

I also found resellers on Etsy, Yahoo Japan, and even Amazon Japan, but many do seem to be out of stock. I can only go off what 42agent told me at the time, and I really cannot find them on Taobao anymore unfortunately. At the time I bought these, I bought a big bulk parcel of them together because I knew I wanted a crew that was made up of multiple different classes of pupils. So I just bought a whole bunch, in multiple colours and configurations for future-proofing. I am starting to run out though... :aeyepop: At any rate, the magic words to search for are "ob11 wizard clothes".

If you do find and get these uniforms, do bear in mind that they're made for Obitsu 11cm, and they aren't actually intended to fit the 14cm+ dolls. Liroro for example can't wear the shorts version without permanently breaking her spine, and if she wears the skirt version, eeeeevvvverything is on show. :sweat The original Penny's Boxes and dolls that short like Bonnie do well in the clothes, but most things that came after, especially with them trending taller, fit badly or not at all. I forced Kukaka Insect Cafe into them, but emphasis in on forced, because I had to unstring the doll and then restring her inside her clothes. She's semi-permanently in them as a result.

That's just these uniforms though, there's actually a lot of different kinds available if you search for ob11 clothes! Lots of typical traditional Japanese school uniforms, but also a few traditional European ones, but even some more modern/contemporary global uniforms. Others might fit better or worse.

      • x 1
    34. @nattherat Thanks for the heads up! I am hoping to get a pattern book for OB11 size at some point, and I could use that to adjust for the slightly taller ones we're getting now... Hm, having thoughts.

      • x 1
    35. Apparently I managed to post this in the wrong thread and only realised days later, oops!

A new preview of the SIMONTOYS Ninizee Dream Town Series dolls!

I'm very excited for these, they look a lot like (though not exactly of course) the Teenar series in the face, which is great because I didn't get that series due to painted eyes. An inset eye version = yes please! I love their wibbly irises.

      • x 2
    36. I was surprised that kika decided to sell those for some reason I thought those dolls are M**e or something like that which is like banned recasts. They look exactly like those ones with blue hair. So I avoided buying 10000 escape plans. But kika lists JIDONGSHUNXI as brand. It just makes it more complicated to serf through Chinese bjd market lol.

    37. They wouldn't have been listed in this thread if that were the case, I never would have listed them. Notice that the post on the front page makes a vague reference to M*****e but doesn't name them and makes it clear they are banned. We're in Brigadoon, but rules are still rules (and for good reason)!

    38. Sorry edited my post. They just look so similar.

    39. @AbrakadbrA No worries at all :3nodding: I wasn't implying anything! Just saying that I never would have put 10k Escape Plans in the thread if there were any suspicions.

It seems like the designers/manufacturers of that line are having some troubles, but otherwise they are legit. I feel pretty bad for them tbh, I do feel like the popularity of the previews/preorder for them is what helped bring in the current era of more mature styles for blind box dolls of this size, so it's a shame that one of the first to do it is having so many problems.

Actually, you know who I'm worried about? AIYE. There's not been a peep out of them in so long, and their insta seems dead. :pout: Kikagoods did actually show a supposed preview of some new AIYE line on their Discord recently, but it was very quiet and to no fanfare. I adore the AIYE mermaids, I really want them to do a new doll line!

    40. So my most recent update on 10,000 Escape Plans is: someone posted unboxing pictures on Tumblr. They said that it appears the dolls were made in white plastic, strung, and then spray-painted the colors they are supposed to be. So peach dolls have white joint ends. Brown hair is white on the inside of the head. Might explain the white "paint spots" others have complained about. It's not white paint. It's paint scratches, with the white underneath showing.

I've agreed to accept one in exchange for 3D printing a request. I want one, but I don't want to pay actual dollars for it. But barter? I can do barter.

    41. Whaaaaatt?

I'm really not sure what to make of it all. Somebody else seems to confirm the spray paint too in this thread: thread detailing a lot of damages here. Apparently some dolls even arrived with... insect eggs in them??????! Geez. One of the machine-translated comments says this: "The kid who ran away 10,000 times has his hair made like a pirated product. This is the first time I see an official product being produced as a pirated product.", I think I'm inclined to agree.

Perhaps I should remove them from the front page after all, just because they don't seem like they should actually be sold in this state.
Edit: Put a warning for now.

OK, I'm gonna say for that reason alone, we should put them on the hard "Do Not Buy" list.

      • x 1
    43. Yeah I think I agree. I went and took a closer look. Only one person has reported the insect egg, which I may have chalked up to accidental in transit issues, but I noticed by following another link to this that one buyer also received chewed up/spat out betel nut in their package? The factory clearly has severe issues with quality control and potential dangerous hygiene. I'll update the front page.

      • x 2
    44. Half-relatedly, and also pre-emptively assuming the size, this new series by Taowu Studio looks like a very similar aesthetic (the body sculpt almost looks the same? The legs are really similar).

I'm not sure if it's just coincidentally extremely similar or if it's the same designer. It may be a viable safe alternative if you're okay with a more androgynous body...?

      • x 2
    45. Bonbon Galaxy also appears to be making something similar, judging by teaser posts from Kikagoods on Instagram, although they don't say what size it is.
kikagoods on Instagram: "Toy share by brand: Bonbon Galaxy Cute Girl Series Action Figure Blind Box 6 regular style spoilers have been released, and there are still no hidden style spoilers. KikaGoods will continue to update more progress. Follow us and get the newest toy share daily #kikagoods #actionfigure #blindbox #toys #kawaii #figurine #dollstyle #arttoys #dolls #bjddoll #bjd"

Speaking of Kikagoods - I'm disappointed in their response to 10,000 Escape Plans. They have their own dedicated Discord server. Their responses to concerned pre-order questions have been one nothingburger answer after another. I am re-evaluating them as a dealer.

      • x 1
    46. I can barely find any mention of anything at all on their discord, from them or their users. I'm searching for "escape plans" and "escape plan", and all I can really find is 1) people who are waiting on their tracking, 2) people linking the Chinese forums, and 3) people who have got theirs and have no problems (which, good for them!).

It's hard to tell what the proportion of defective units are as a result, which makes it really hard to make a judgement whether the factory messed up the entire line, or if it's a percentage of them. Even more complicated when all the Aliexpress sellers are still selling them, and generally they're so concerned with 5-star reviews that they aren't going to carry something with that many consistent issues.

I guess all we can do is wait and see for more of them to roll out. :/

      • x 2
    47. Heads up about Kikagoods but apparently some people noticed they added a blurb to some listings stating they need unboxing videos as proof of issues.

      • x 2
    48. Yikes. I got my Angel one from the series the other day. The doll itself is luckily fine, about the same quality from other company lines. Her outfit on the other hand was missing pieces. (Both sleeves and one leg warmer.) Also some of the hand parts have some black spots on the plastic. I could barely make sense of kika's answer to the missing parts email except it'll take a bit for them to get parts?

      • x 1
    49. I can't link it anymore. It was in their Q&A thread, but they delete the questions after so many days.

I am getting more and more, hmmm, perturbed by their responses. I mean, they are great - when there aren't problems. But they charge a dealer mark-up like any other dealer, and I willingly pay it because I want dealer customer service. If they aren't willing to provide said customer service, well... I'll find a dealer who will.

      • x 2
    50. I always film everything from kika when unboxing. Theirs customer support is not user friendly. Better be cautious & film everything

    51. Video of the prototype of one of the Inedible Doll bunnies. It's so much cuter than I'd imagined! Can't really tell if the eyes are painted or inset...

Here are some photos of one of the other bunnies. They are a little blurry but it looks like the eyes might be inset in the 3rd photo?

Next, here are some photos of the prototypes of three of the Ninizee dolls - One, Two & Three

      • x 3
    52. I'm pretty sure the Inedible Doll bunnies have painted eyes, there's a bunch of photos of them like this and this. Although they seem to be more handpainted rather than screened in those prototypes, it's definitely on a non-inset-eye face. They've just got particularly nice sculpting/paint application I think.

I'm so in love with how cute the Ninizee dolls are, I am really looking forward to them!
