General 10-20cm Blind Box BJD Discussion

Sep 27, 2023

    1. Here's where you can discuss the whole market/trend in general and from any (legit) maker you like. :3nodding: The criteria is: BJDs and JDs around the 10-20cm size, packaged blind-box style (you don't know which one from a series you're getting). IIf a maker has made non-blind box dolls in the same kind of style/from the same lines/similar to their blind box offerings, those are ok to discuss too, as well as if they make a series that clearly relates to a 10/19cm series they've made, but happens to be larger or smaller. Usually made from ABS/PVC.

DOA's Banned list still applies, so dolls from a certain banned company may not be discussed no matter what, since the company is embroiled in counterfeiting.

    2. Ooh, thank you! I'd never realised how many were out there.

The Bonnies are probably my favourites.

    3. They absolutely exploded this year after the popularity of the Dreamlike Tea Party series from Penny's Box I feel! We went from basically only Penny's Box, to a whole slew of makers, within 6-12 months. This list is by no means exhaustive either. I know of a few other lines coming out, I just don't know enough about the names and details to actually put them in the list yet.

I love Bonnie too, very much. I'm a bit sad that series 2 uses magnets for the ears - the jointed ears from series 1 adds so much personality!

    4. Ohh great! Thank you for starting the thread! I have a few Bonnies and am thinking of getting one from season 2... although I feel like I'd only be happy with the Taro bun.

      Here's my band:

    5. @nattherat It's genuinely amazing to think how quickly this, erm, genre of dolls grew! I need to agree with the comment about the ears - it doesn't help that the magnets feel quite weak? I understand it means you could display them without the ears far easier, but I liked the jointed, poseable ones.

@cobaltconduct Such a fun picture! I also have the little one in pink.

      • x 1
    6. Those bunnies are way too cute. I may yet need one of them to hang out with my Nagi Cub and Miss Blueberry. ^_^

    7. That's a shame that the magnets are weak! I already had trouble with a few jointed ears being too loose but that is unfortunately an easy fix. I bump into my desk (aka the bunny lair) a lot, I can very vividly imagine having to go looking for the magnetic ears all the time as they plop off *_*

    8. Kikagoods.com also sells all/most of these lines!

    9. Ah thanks for the reminder that a little note on dealers would be a good idea!

      EDIT: and done.

    10. I'm gonna add Mini World Pajama Party dolls as a candidate XD they're similar to the Adou and Nagi Cub series in that they're not strung. Super cute little guys tho! (afaik they're not banned, but apologies if I'm wrong)

      I don't have a pic tho because they're in storage ;o;

    11. Does anyone know how these look next to 1:12 blind box furniture? (Thinking of the Re-ment furniture in particular)

I own one of the Teenar Campus dolls and a Nendoroid doll as well as normal Nendoroids and figmas, and even though they're all described as 1:12 they look wildly different.

    12. UFdoll Meow Meow girls could also be added! I really like how long-legged they are.

    13. The reason why the dolls are all different proportions and may or may not look so off next to each other, when they are all labeled "1:12", "1:6", ect., is because they are not actually scaled miniatures. For things to be an actual in-scale doll (or other toy, collectible), they first have to be proportioned like a real-life object, then miniaturized that many times smaller than the real life one to be "in-scale." Otherwise, the term is used wrongly. That's why the mods renamed the sub-discussion forums to be "tiny," "mini," ect, many years ago because the term scale doesn't apply to most dolls discussed on topic on here (general forum). People who seem to collect mostly dolls in general, don't seem to care about it. Until they run into issues like "why is "X" doll not similar to "Y" doll, if they are both "xyz" scale. Then comes the turning point on why, it is important not to misuse terms, but then there's Asian companies that seem to love using the term wrongly, and we come to an endless road of misuse of the term "scale." DX

      I own very few Re-Ment sets, but most are still sealed in their bags, because I am a weirdo. Most are ancient, earlier releases, so I doubt they would be helpful in photos. I feel like as long as dolls are not actually scaled, or hyper stylized, most miniatures will work with them. Like for example, Blythe, Pullip, giant headed tinier dolls (Barbie, as well, some have giant noggings and are not 1:6, they are playscale because they are too deformed to be "real-life" object proportions), most props that are actual 1:6 and under will work, because their proportions fool the eye into thinking at least one part of the doll is proportionate to the object. Hope that helps, I am an actual figue collector above all else, and nothing irks me to no tommorow, than finding things wrongly labeled when shopping for scaled figure props, clothes and shoes! (;

    14. Yeah, what @Enzyme said! This particular hobby using "1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3", etc, is accidentally misleading. None of them are actually scaled, and they've been very loosely termed based purely on physical height and not actual scale. I've put 1/12 in the title because that's what the dealers and manufacturers will all call them, but it's not accurate to actual scale. (that said, I guess fantasy is fantasy, and who knows what a real centaur or mermaid would actually be like)

I find, with quite stylised little things like this, that it's often better to use something for a different scale. For example, my other interest; fashion dolls, often looks better with 1/4 items rather than 1/6 items, because their large stylised heads look more in proportion to 1/4 objects even if the rest of their bodies aren't. I suspect the same will be true of these dolls.

(also thanks for the suggestions, list updated!)

    15. Scale really is a pain, I mostly find fitting things on accident. Recently I've aquired some of those mini fashion brand capsules and those things aren't scaled properly either. But one of these capsules contained sunglasses that kinda work for these little guys.
Anyway. here are the first two blind box bjd that I got:
I have also promptly ordered more.
I'm also waiting on those Yun Lai ones, I'm getting two. Been looking at Aliexpress for opened ones as well, but I don't want to blow all my doll money on them...I think. They're really tempting though.

      • x 1
    16. New line! Non-rabbit Bonnies??

I haven't even been able to get a series 2 Bonnie yet, and we're seeing a series 3? :dance

      • x 3
    17. RE: Scale. Like others have been saying, these little blind box BJDs aren't exactly 1/12th scale. However, having looked some stuff around, I think that re-ment props might just work, since they seem to be an odd scale themselves. Also people seem to use them with Nendoroid dolls, and the BJDs seem to be sizes with them. Hopefully that helps @soulsoaker

(Though I am now wondering if doll house furniture would work with these little ones. Hm.)

@nattherat I saw that literally just five minutes ago! Given that the series 2 body was shown in series 1 with the secret, I wonder if the secret from series 2 - the fox - might be the theme of the animal in series 3?

    18. I don't see any animal ears on them at all, but they do still look to have animal faces and bodies - except perhaps the green one who looks to have fabric lamb or bunny ears? The yellow one might be a ram/sheep. Those might be little curly horns on their head?

I can't wait to see more. I love the hair colours, and I'm also glad they're making the faces quite significantly different per series. That was my one hang-up with Penny's Box, it sort of frustrates me that all the Antu dolls have identical faces - that's a me-problem though. :XD:

    19. Wow! They're really on fire with making more Bonnies (can't blame them). Seems like another really sweet and cutesy one, though - I really liked the premise of the first edition and was kind of hoping they'd continue on the streetstyle fashion.

    20. I agree - I do vastly prefer the newer faces and bodies, but I love the more urban direction of series 1. Since Come4free do a lot of urban-themed lines, hopefully they either take a future Bonnie series back to that, or make a different line of tinies.

    21. Has anyone seen anything about the Bug Cafe line of dolls? KikaGoods made a post on their Tumblr about them, and honestly? I ... find them pretty adorable.

      • x 2
    22. Good timing, just some minutes ago I actually added them to the first post! I don't know who the company is yet though.
I'd definitely like to get the moth girl, who isn't pictured on their tumblr but is on their instagram here.

    23. @nattherat Ha! I hadn't actually seen that, actually. But ooh, moth girl is very cute!

    24. The bug girls are by 天堂制造 (Made in Heaven) Studio. Here's their weibo.

    25. I really love their chubbier limbs, and the boy one (I am assuming, due to the tie, if I am able to get that one he'll be a boy for me). These are super cute I also find their eyes beautiful and I am not one to usually go for bug themed stuff, although these are not that "insect-like" anyway. However, I find these are adorable, and if I can get the one with the tie, I'll be happy! (:

    26. Aww, they are so cute! I like the one with the reddish, pinkish colored hair best. My luck is so poor though. :...(

      • x 1
    27. Many thanks, I'll get the post updated. While I'm there, I guess I'll link some weibos and taobaos too - the first post is starting to become a bit of a central info resource! :XD: So thanks for those links and always being on top of finding studios, feel free to keep posting 'em!

    28. No problem! Here are some more links I have.

    29. Have you guys seen these yet? They supposedly come out in November. They're Teennar second generation. So Simon Toys. I especially love the guitar and the news girl.

    30. Yesss, I think they're so cute! I've got them on the first post listed as "new series", only because I'm not sure if a name has been announced yet.

I won't be getting any myself - to keep collecting under control, I've made a rule of "must have inset eyes" for myself - but I know a friend will definitely pick these up and I look forward to seeing theirs!

      • x 1
    31. Same! I'm trying to limit myself from now on to 'must have inset eyes' too!

      • x 1
    32. Yeah, I understand! I'm personally limiting myself to one or two figures of a series and I'm avoiding anthros.

Didn't connect them with the first post, oops.

    33. I LOVE the little bug girls!!! I think they finally got me!! I might order the full set!

    34. I just got my Simon's Toys Liroroi girl, and while she's adorable as expected, she came missing her shoes and the four extra pairs of hands? I got one of their first Teenar Campus girls when those first came out, and she arrived with everything. So, I am a bit disappointed and surprised, as none of the other trading dolls I've purchased so far from Penny's Box and Simon's have come missing pieces. Has anyone else experienced anything like that specifically from Simon's, and received correct replacement parts from legit resellers/dealers? I'm just wondering if I should bother requesting some, or if I should just count my losses, as I don't mind the hands too much although the kitty paws are cute, but the shoes are kind of important to the rest of the outfit. I don't want to find shoes that fit, more than anything -- I know there are a lot of choices, but a lot of sellers don't list the materials for the fabric ones and that drives me nuts! DX

    35. @Enzyme Did you buy a specific girl? I had (currently have, really) an incident when buying an 'open to confirm' listing on Aliexpress. The doll was sent badly repackaged and missing one of her socks. My attempts at resolution...aren't going well and the seller isn't cooperating.
I don't know of any problems with sealed products.

    36. I'd contact the dealer - I know Kikagoods have been helpful with people missing parts from the centaur kits for instance but it depends where you bought yours from of course.

    37. @EagleVision1999, no I didn't purchase a pre-opened specific girl this time, I got mine from Penny's Box official dealer on Amzn. I've gotten all four of my centaurs and Simon's Teenar from them (and other trading toys), and never experienced this before. I'm kind of scared of getting toys from Ali, I don't mind getting synthetic hair for wigs, or notions for tiny sewing, but toys in general I like to avoid at all costs from there. I did get a specific centaur from the same Amzn seller and didn't have any issues either (I was dead set on getting the purple-bluish one, with the semi-transulcent hair, although the cost for her did leave me a bit frustrated with my willingness to spend money on unnecessary things. I am happy I was able to get her from a legit dealer!). Thanks for your input! (:

@cobaltconduct, I got her from Penny's Box offical dealer. I might try to see if they can help me. Worse case, they say no, and I'll have to get shoes and hands separately -- I know some of the Penny's Box hands can be purchased separately, but I don't believe Simon's does that, let alone for the shoes... T___T;; I don't want o purchase fabric shoes, and I don't feel any molded plastic ones will fit, but oh, well. I guess I had terrible luck this time. Thanks for your feedback, I am definitely at least trying to see what response I get. ^.^

    38. Sorry that's happened to you @Enzyme! :( Hmm, I don't know if it would help, you'd need to check your Penny's Box shoes on your Liroro, but personally I have zero interest in plastic shoes so I won't be using any of mine. I have Penny's Box and Bonnie. I could go put my spares up in the marketboard.

@EagleVision1999 That really sucks, I'm sorry! I've only had to do a serious dispute once (over a not-toys thing, I was buying a bulk pack of acrylic cases), and it was a miserable experience that saw me lose about £200 with no way of getting it back. To be fair, it wasn't actually Aliexpress or the seller who was at fault, it was the postal service in my country, but it's Aliexpress's responsibility to chase that up - Royal Mail wanted nothing to do with me, the recipient - and they refused to do it, and refused to refund me. I've been hesitant to buy anything from the platform since unless the transaction is cheap enough I don't mind eating the loss if something happens. I've since returned to shopping from taobao instead. Navigation is inconvenient, but the prices aren't and a great agent sorts out any problems.

    39. @nattherat, I am usually unlucky with trading figures, so I mostly get full-sets if I am aiming for a specific licensed character. I hadn't had any bad luck with these dolls however, so it is a bit of a pain in the gut, to have it happen now, after so many of these dolls I've purchased so far. Kind of makes me reconsider getting more (but I will probably still get more, because I am interested in a few more of these). I prefer molded shoes for tinier dolls, because of my clumsy shaky hands, fabric ones also might not be suitable for my strict lifestyle choices either, as most sellers don't list materials. It's kind of a pain in the-gut-hole to bother them about materials, all the time. Then, some sellers are not a hounded perecen honest, or just plain don't know what fabrics are used, so I rather just avoid fabric shoes nowadays. Unless I know for certain they are synthetic or natural fabrics from none-animal-derived sources. I used to prefer fabric shoes for all my dolls, but after asking so much, I just got tired of not getting responses half the time -- I know it's completely a "me" problem, but that's one of the bigger reasons I stopped shopping for BJD related items as well. (:

    40. @Enzyme No judgement here, I feel exactly the same! I'm very much against animal-based products, with the one sole exception being medication because unfortunately at the moment it's not possible to unlink medical science from animal trials, as much as I wish it was. Everything else though; nope. I'm doing enough damage being in love with plastic tat, I don't need to add direct animal suffering to that too! Plastic dolls looking nice is not that important that it's worth more than a life (or several, as is most likely).

There are definitely a lot of ob11 shoes made from real leather, which is both extremely unnecessary and actually just looks out of scale and bad anyway imho. The BJD hobby in general can be an ethical minefield, especially when to this day there's still a bit of a prevalent elitest attitude that the "best" BJD items require dead animals (not a quality BJD unless the wig is made out of raw pelt and the outfit and boots are made out of calf, apparently). This kind of means that sometimes even non-leather things are marked as leather, because that's more "appealing" to the hobby as a whole, making it even more frustrating to navigate.

But anyway, that's a tangent. It makes perfect sense to me to prefer plastic shoes as a result! A lot safer than the gamble of buying random fabric shoes online and hoping for the best.

    41. @nattherat, I know material sources doesn't bother most, and some indeed favor ones made from animals. So, now I just avoid stuff if materials are not listed, or it's not made out of obvious canvas, synthetic blends or plastics. I gotten into attempting to make my own tiny shoes now too, so at least there's that (not tiny enough for these dolls though, I would probably rip my hair out at that tiny of a size). (:

I wrote to the Amzn dealer, I hope I at least hear back from them, even if it's not good news! Thanks again to all who chimed in, to encourage me to ask. I feel it was the right decision, now just need to wait and see. n___n

    42. Poor labeling of materials is kind of frustrating for people on both sides of the fence. Pleather that peels as it ages gets me a little tilted and if I can't figure out how much peeling risk something has it's like whelp... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I do prefer the hard plastic shoes for these wee little ones though. Feels more in-character for a cutesy cartoony style to me.

I am digging the two boys in the Nagi Exchange Student Series. My blind box luck sucks though. Might just look for some confirmed box sellers later.

    43. @zekarmisama Yeah, it's a shame that you can never be sure of the quality of something - though I guess that extends to everything online. Personally I've had really good experiences with almost all synthetic leathers, especially things like treated spandex. That stuff is fantastic for dolls, and immensely durable - I don't think you ever have to worry about it flaking. But I've had one singular little accessory I bought with a pretty expensive outfit set from a Chinese maker that flaked into gross little pieces within a year. The accessory was a face mask too, I'm not sure what business it had even being made out of that material! :XD: Fortunately, the last thing I'm going to do is cover up an expensive BJD's face, but still.

I suspect some of it is a hold-over from the earlier days of the hobby, similar to the 1:6 action figure hobby; just 20 years ago, the figures in that hobby were absolutely unrecognisable to what they are now, but sometimes odd poor choices still come through because that's how it was done once upon a time.

Anyway, I am absolutely dying to order a whole pile of these cuties, but I feel like I have to have a certain amount before making an order with my Taobao agent is worth it. Plus I can't find some of them on Taobao just yet.

    44. I also prefer the plastic shoes for my little ones. I really like the Obitsu 11 tennis shoes, but darn, they are expensive! I’ve seen some priced at $50 usd! I found a legit seller for $12 plus shipping from Japan, but have been putting off getting them as they cost as much as a new blind box doll, lol. I like plastic shoes as they fit tight and you can wash them. The Adou series re did their shoes so they fit on the feet and are not peg style (which kept breaking ). So happy about that.

    45. Oh my god the new ufdoll bunnies (weibo link). The gloves! The socks! The boy in shorts! As far as understood they will be 1/6 so a fair bit bigger than the usual blind box dolls

      • x 1
    46. I got a response from the Amzn seller, they are going to check for me if Simons can send them replacement parts for me! Now more waiting. (:

Those bunnies are so beautiful! If I can get the "boy" one, I am definitely going to have to get some different shoes for him, as much as those are adorable, I like my male dolls to be as close to traditional-male as possible (otherwise I would just get a female doll -- my boring personal preference, but I am ancient and love "manly boy" and "manly men" dolls better than female ones, unless it's mass-produced fashion dolls. Then I prefer the females, as most of the males are boring to me).

    47. That's UFDoll's second 1/6 blind box line, right? Come4free have also made I think 3 or 4 20cm blindbox art doll lines. Luckydoll also has a 1/6 line coming up, though I don't think it's a blind box.

It's hard to pin down a criteria for this thread without it becoming out of control levels of broad. :sweat So I did the thing once again, because 20-30cm dolls have just enough now to actually warrant their own megathread too!

    48. @nattherat LuckyDoll just leaked the grey-scale molds of a new set of 1/12 blind boxes.

It's a cross over between LuckyDoll and Dunhuang (which is a blind box design line)

    49. I finally caved and ordered three of the Bonnie season 2 bunny girls. Here’s to hoping I get Taro or at least the one with the pink/orange hair. They are all cute anyway!

    50. Added to upcoming, thanks!

    51. I am obsessed with all the new blind boxes. So pretty and so cute and posable. I got a few from different series and want more.
As of missing hands and shoes, one of the blind figures I bought (also from amazon) had an extra doll stand inside the bag with the figure so I guess errors do happen there, too.
I do love plastic shoes with dolls this small for sure, they look so much more to scale.
Thank you for collecting all the links and names together!

    52. What do you do with the boxes? I've realised storing them will rack up and eat space pretty quickly and they're not *quite* as valuable as resin bjd boxes but... still.

    53. I haven't kept any of mine! They went straight into recycling. :sweat I tend to buy already opened ones to choose specific dolls though, which means sometimes the box I receive isn't fit to be kept anyway.

I think if you care about provenance, the little cards they come with is probably enough?

    54. I have kept all my boxes, since that's were my dolls will be staying for a while. I don't trust strung dolls without a stand, but I also don't trust not losing a sock or a shoe somewhere. I don't currently have the extra space for more Ikea detolfs in my room, so all the figures, dolls and other toys I want to display will stay in their boxes until I can get more of both (more space and more detolf).

I only have own centaur I purchased pre-opened, I don't really mind not getting specific ones with the others, unless there's definitely boys and girls in one series, or some with specific features I would prefer. I like to keep my packages in general, and open my boxes for trading figures from the bottom with an x-acto knife to avoid damage. Unfortunately, that is not what most sellers do, but at least some are mindful with original packaging. I tend to only collect one doll from some series, except for the Antu centaurs, so the boxes are not a problem for me yet. I will repurpose or recycle some once it does become an issue. (:

    55. Ahhh so very exciting! I'd like to get "Fast and Furious" (what a name), she's the one that has enticed me since the first renders.

    56. I got my Bonnie Tea Party girls today! I’m so happy as I got Taro Lily, Sea Salt Sisi, and Matcha Fufu, the three I wanted the most. They are so cute! I need to get all my rabbit girls together for a photo shoot.

    57. When it comes to the boxes, I really don't have the space to keep them. So what I do is cut off the front image of the box. Mostly because a lot of these boxes have some really nice art work on the front and I would like to keep that. It's like an extra piece of art card. Just one per series though, I would be over-run easily if I did otherwise.

@kurogane I am so happy to hear you got the Bonnies you liked the best!

I just wanted to jump in to share some excitement: I managed to get hold of one of the Spring Rain Bonnies! Kikagoods managed to get some in, and I was online at the right time and managed to grab one. She was dispatched today, and I'm looking forward to her arriving. I feel so amazed at the luck, and wish this luck for others going forward!

    58. Congratulations @werepuppy on getting one of the Spring Rain Bonnies! I saw a picture of her and she is adorable in her green rain boots.

I’m thinking of just trying for the one offs to keep my collection under control, but I’ve been seeing more one offs and special colabs lately, so that might be hard. I only really wanted one of the tea party girls (Taro) but got three to increase my odds, and they are all so incredibly cute I’m glad I did. Now I’m waiting for the insect series to be released. Too many!
